Fourth Wing is almost unreasonably compelling as a story (SPOILERS)

While the plot twist is something you can absolutely predict, there is a kind of joy in knowing that it will happen because you’re so caught up in the lead up and the ultimate fall out.

I’ve always thought that tropes and cliches, while treated like a bad thing, when done properly, make for excellent storytelling.

Was it immediately obvious that Xaden, not Dain, was the main love interest and she would eventually fizzle out of her childhood crush on him? Duh.

Did I get extremely suspicious each time Dain touched her face after I realised their friendship was going the wayside?? Uh absolutely. I clocked that bitch a mile away.

With all his hesitation and emphasis on secret keeping, was I surprised that Xaden turned out to be working with the gryphon fliers?? Nah.

Was it unexpected that venin and wyvern were real?? No the amount of emphasis on that damn book being just a silly little book of folktales made me realise quite quickly.

Brennan at the end was a bit of a surprise, but after never ever seeing or hearing about his dragon, despite knowing about Mira’s and knowing Tairn was the bonded dragon of Brennan’s “friend”, it made sense.

The moment I heard about big scary black dragon not having a rider, I was like yeah that’s gonna be Violet’s. then golden feather tail came along and I was like but wait why the emphasis on new dragon if big dragon??? Then she got two so that was a fun switch up.

But did any of these change my enjoyment of the story??? No. My expectations were met in the best way and I was compelled to see them through the whole way. The satisfaction of knowing what will happen and having accurately anticipated it is where half the fun is. I don’t need nonsensical plot twists for no other purpose than shock value. It’s a well written story and a tight narrative.

What I for sure wasn’t expecting was not one but TWO and I guess technically a half sex scenes. I was fully expecting a cut to the next morning or the next hour or something. But nope. Just like any raunchy fanfic I was reading words like clit and cock and immediately had to remove myself from the living room to my bed room because my mother was next to me and I can’t be reading these things in her presence. Even if I am 25 years old.

So yeah. As expected. I will be waiting for Iron Flame. My first booktok rec turned out pretty well.

Upon closer inspection, the figure is in the likeness of 7-A. Booping its nose turns on and off small lights in its eyes and cheek modules, simulating the glow of the real one. The included accessory is a junk radio, identical to one 7-A made herself. It magnetically attaches to her hoof, and glows in tandem with her other features.

Sour Sweet: I SHIP YOU TWO REAL HARD! @rawrienstein

What is your opinion on the Shadowbolt 5 (Sour Sweet, Sugarcoat, Sunny Flare, Zemon Zest and Indigo Zap) as characters? Do you have any ships for them?

I love the Shadowbolt 5! I really, REALLY wish we’d had more specials starring them and had actually been used to their full potential.

Dance Magic was an excellent reintroduction to the characters and their dynamics to be rivals to the Main 6, but with the potential to be friendly rivals. If the show had been a TV series with actual 22 minute episodes I could EASILY have seen entire episodes revolving around one of the girls going up against their Shadowbolt counterparts or the girls developing a friendly rivalry with the group!

Like, it’s a LOT more fun when you have someone to compete against than just competing against something for the sake of it. So giving the girls rivals for their futures would’ve been amazing!

Like, Sports competitions where Dash has to go up against Zap, or some kind of Gardening/Botany competition of Fluttershy vs Sour Sweet, a scholastics competition of Sugarcoat vs SciTwi, or a fashion competition between Sunny and Rarity.

Like honestly the girls had endless potential, and given that they ended Dance Magic on good terms there was EASILY room for all sorts of relationship dynamics to play out between them and the CHS girls! Especially given the dynamic of Crystal Prep having always beaten CHS in the past and the school giving the girls issues for befriending the Crystal Prep girls!

GAH! The lost potential! They only ever showed up for two specials and sporadically as BG characters but there was SO MUCH you could’ve done with them! And they all had fun quirky personalities to boot!

I don’t really have any ships for them though, at least not at the moment. Due to their nature of only having appeared a limited number of times there wasn’t a whole lot of dynamics to test their personalities against. And of course different writers interpret them differently, so you get very different dynamics from writer to writer.

Either way, girls are woefully underrepresented and if there is any kind of EQG reboot I hope they’ll come back and get the proper respect they deserve!

The Search for Ciralin: An Empty Cavern

Days had passed since she arrived in Telogrus Rift after her encounter with the company. It was the only place she knew they couldn't find her, but boredom was creeping on her. She missed seeing real trees, and a real sky. While the Rift had a certain beauty of its own, the constant darkness was beginning to take a toll on the Ren'dorei, and she began to make preparations to leave.

A tear in the space before her opened as she finished muttering a spell, through the crack of reality she could see the rubble of a palace in Azsuna. The perfect place to hide. As she began to step forward a hand had clasped around her shoulder and she looked up to see a cloaked figure.

"Emotions unchecked will lead to your ruin..." The voice warned. It was gruff, deep, and vaguely familiar but she couldn't place where she knew it from. Ciralin shook the hand off her as a shiver rolled down her back, and stepped away from the man. Her lips pursed as she resisted making a snide remark and retreated to the other side of the rift. As the portal behind her closed she let out a sigh of relief and continued to march forward through the land, following the road to a set of elvish ruins.

More days had come and gone, and Ciralin created made herself a small camp within a nearby cave for herself. She had furnished it with various fundamentals from travelling merchants.. She was content with her small bedroll, a few old but sturdy crates as surfaces to hold some of her belongings, and a little fire pit with an empty spit above it. It wasn't home, but it was homely.

On her way home from the library within the Academy nearby, she began to sense something. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end, and the ambient noises of Azsuna seemed to dull as the sounds of yet another familiar voice echoed faintly around her. Instantly her mood darkened as she realized that the Company had begun to scry on her. 

"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Ciralin shouted at, seemingly, no one in particular. Void energies prickled against her and she lobbed a shadowbolt in the direction she felt the unwanted eyes, before briskly running to her ‘home’. Anger flooded through her as she returned to her encampment, she could feel herself becoming more and more worked up by the moment. Her hands slammed onto the crate tops, rattling a box of tinctures.

"How dare they?! How dare they put me in harm's way. They clearly just want me dead!"

Dead. Yes dead. No one wants you. No one needs you. You're a burden. The money on your head is enough to fund a new fleet of ships. Why would they keep you?

"No. Shut up! Stop it!" It had been a while since the whispers had gotten to be this loud, she had fooled herself into believing that they were under control again. Ciralin let out a shriek of pain and anger, and clutched onto her head with one hand and reached out for one of the vials with a shaking hand, quickly downing its contents.

“Sleep will silence you...and when I awake...we’ll move...again.” She tripped over her feet to her makeshift bed, as the elixir began to take effect within the Ren’dorei. Ciralin squeezed her eyes shut and curled herself into a ball, hugging her knees to her chest as the false, dreamless sleep washed over her.

Hmm how about Pinkie Pie?

best quality: Lives life by the beat of her own drum. She does everything her own silly and fun way. She’s always looking to make the world just a little more brighter and enjoyable for herself, and her favorite way to do it is making other people happy. Which is absolutely fantastic. I enjoy these kinds of people, well in moderate doses anyway.

worst quality: This mostly comes up with characters that aren’t very typical, but sometimes it feels like Pinkie is talking to a made up a version of the person she’s talking to rather than engaging and listening. Sometimes she’s very empathetic, but when it comes to more atypical people Pinkie gets really lost on how to engage with them. People like Gilda and Cranky Doodle are pretty notable, but Maud is probably the best.

In the episode, “The Maud Couple,” Pinkie is constantly failing to stop and listen to her own sister as Maud keeps trying to explain her feelings to Pinkie. Pinkie constantly fills in blanks of her knowledge with things she thinks most ponies would do, but Maud is not most ponies. And that’s where the conflict mostly comes from.

(Also Mudbriar is a terrible character and doesn’t deserve such a good horse, just let Maud be a lesbian, Hasbro...you cowards)

ship them with: I usually say she’s AroAce, but I also like her as Pan depending on the setting. Which doesn’t mean, she needs to be shipped, but if I did, I’d ship her with Sugarcoat (EqG). 

Pinkie could easily disarm Sugarcoat’s negative moments and defenses with her standard Pinkiness. And while normally I’d see Sugarcoat as being easily annoyed, I feel like she’d quickly grow to like the attention that Pinkie gives her and how genuine it is even if it’s rather over enthusiastic.

There might be the issue I listed earlier, as Sugarcoat and the Shadowbolts in general are a bit atypical. But I think this would be what makes the ship interesting and would help Pinkie grow as the rest of the girls help her figure it out.

I marathoned the last three seasons of MLP:FiM a couple of weeks ago and am having difficulty thinking about fannish things other than the cartoon ponies. Not that I have any complaints. It's a very earnest and reassuring show, and I've already started a rewatch. Poked around fimfiction, which is mostly but not completely dead for my ships, characters, and friendships of interest, so maybe I'll give in to the urge to fic for my time-wise longest fandom. Friendship Is Dragons I got the sudden motivation to finish the show because I caught up on this webcomic, where MLP is a 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons campaign being played out. Still love that it has the two-parter pilot be Twilight's player figuring out the Elements of Harmony way earlier than the DM expected, thus derailing their entire campaign. The variety of players match the variety of the mane six - Spike as a Wizard familiar and the DM mouthpiece makes way too much sense - and it has its own sweet moments despite the distance from the show's storyline. It's understandably not going episode-by-episode, given the volume at play here, so sometimes it does things like turn the S1 finale into a final battle against a Thieves' Guild. Think I prefer current Canterlot Wedding arc, though, where they're playing through the show's events with a different context for the players. Darths & Droids ...And I got reminded of the above because I decided to catch up on this Star Wars TTRPG comic. The character shifts across trilogies has been great to see, and the comic still manages to pull off unexpected twists. I like the passage of real-life time between campaigns and the players' progress. The comic is at the beginning of the sequels trilogy now. Intrigued by the character choices: Sally playing Kylo, Pete playing Rey, the married Annie/Jim playing Finn-Poe. Fanwork Recs Yeah, this is the MLP fic edition. Spellbound Fireflies (RD & Scootaloo, RD/Twilight) - There are a billion "Rainbow Dash teaches Scootaloo how to fly" fics, but this is a classic that remains my favorite. Written pre-S3 finale, great characterizations for everyone but especially the three mains. Zero-Sun Game - Rainbow Dash faces her final test to join the Shadowbolts, and fails with flying colors. A fantastic take on Rainbow Dash, in which her loyalty and self-interest means she fails every test but she wins the dream's war, in ways instinctive to her and baffling to her testers. The conclusion fits neatly with the show's ethos. (It's easy to buy that Luna wouldn't think of this solution to her test.) comments

Hi reader!  Kpopjunkie here! I'm creating a MLP: EQG audio drama that focuses on the five Crystal Prep Shadowbolts, Sour Sweet, Lemon Zest, Sugarcoat, Sunny Flare, and Indigo Zap ( Yaaaasss Zappy is going to be in this!!!). There's going to be all types of stuff going on. I already got the script for episode one planned out and is currently being revised. Trust me, this is going to be way more than some cheesy, generic high school drama. This drama will be full of happy moments, sad moments, shipping moments, and soul-tearing-heart-crushing moments. Smiles will be made, tears will be shed, love will fill the air, hearts will be broken, and wounds will bleed(mentally).   I'm currently looking for artists who'll be interested in joining me on this project (that's mainly why I posted this journal. Do you have any ships for the Shadow 5?

Sour Sweet - I don’t think I have a favorite ship for Sweetie per say, but I am somewhat interested in SourSet (Sour Sweet x Sunset Shimmer). They just seem aesthetically pleasing to me.

Sugar Coat - My OTP for Sugarcoat is SugarZap (Sugarcoat x Indigo Zap). I also headcanon her having a crush on Sci-Twi. It fades within time ever since the Friendship Games.

Sunny Flare - I used to try to get into Timber x Sunny (I saw it once), but it just didn’t click with me anymore. In fact, I don’t even think that I ship Sunny with males anymore, which is ironic since I saw her as straight at first. Now I’m starting to just see her as a Lesbian lol. I do think Sunny x Fluttershy is very cute though, since I’ve been seeing them talk the most out of all the the rainbooms/shadowbolt interactions.

Indigo Zap - Besides Indigo x Sugarcoat, I don’t think I have anymore Indigo Zap ships? I do like Indigo x Lemon as a BROTP.

Lemon Zest - Lemon x Vinyl is just prefect, hands down. You can pry this out of my cold dead fingers.

"Into the well! NOW!" The confidently barked orders of the tacitcal officer for Calculine's strike force rang clearly out of the din of the  battle, the hum of the ship's soul engine, and Kil'jaeden's bellowed incantations. They'd practiced this before, and Thal'kiel knew the attack all too well to boot - it was something he referred to as "the Darkness of a Thousand Souls". Whatever it was, the time that it had been used before any dimensional rifts emerged to absord the bolts, it left behind pain. Significant pain.

Not that the gravity well was any better, mind you, but it was preferable to death.

Activating her belt-mounted rocket boosters, Calculine soared across the deck of the ship, landing within the gravity well's confines moments before the numerous shadowy missiles emerged, only to be harmlessly absorbed by the gravity well. All the while, her entourage of imps drilled at Kil'jaeden, their multitudinous felbolts impacting with small green explosions.

As soon as it was safe, she stepped momentarily into the space between dimensions that her demonic gateway offered, and resumed her assault, a steady cadence in her head. As shadowbolts left her hands, soul shards coalesced into being above her, only to be immediately translated into more dreadstalkers and imps, each new member of her crew empowered as it arrived.

Shadowbolt. Shadowbolt. Dogs. Empower. Shadowbolt. Doom detonation. Hand of Gul'dan. Empower.

"He falters. HE FALTERS!" Thal'kiel shrieked over the din, flying in himself to unleash discordant shadow magic as well, almost seeking to land the killing blow. Meanwhile, Calculine called in yet another doomguard, and with a sizeable army behind her, she grinned. "Thal'kiel! NOW!" Together, they channeled the very life force of her demon army, and it took the form of a sizeable shadow missile, crashing into the slumping form of Kil'jaeden.

Shadowbolt. Hand of Gul'dan. Empower.

Kil'jaeden was obviously faltering, but so was the force of heroes laid before him. Two members had already fallen, and many others were near death. But worrying about that was something that Calculine didn't have time for. All she could do was her job.

Shadowbolt. Shadowbolt. Dogs. Empower.

"Now you DIE, betrayer! Now I have my revenge!" Thal'kiel flew yet again from Calculine's side to unleash his discordant yell. A new wave of imps began their rapid-fire felbolt assault. And towering above all, the group's death knight raised the Maw of the Damned high, an obvious epithet on her lips, bringing it down with authority.

The axe fed. Thal'kiel screamed in exultation. Kil'jaeden had fallen.

The rush of relief and the end of the adrenaline-driven hyperfocus drove Calculine to her knees. But there was no time for rest - the vessel began to shudder, listing through space in the direction of Argus.

"At least we died fighting," was all that Khadgar could utter. Meanwhile, Thal'kiel looked at the sight of his former home, the restored flesh twisted in what could only be described as bliss. Never in the months of their partnership could Calculine recall anywhere near this amount of reverent joy from the skull, even in the times that he expressed joy in having her as a student.

She was so exhausted that the actions of Illidan and Khadgar and Velen were merely background noise. As she crawled across the deck of the ship to sit next to Thal'kiel, his voice lost that discordant edge that it always had. "The skies of home... I did not believe I would see this world again..."

And then there was a flash.

As Khadgar's teleportation spell returned them to Azsuna and the ramifications of Illidan's machhinations were laid bare, all that Calculine could really process was the joy of Thal'kiel and the size of the task to come.

Argus. Crown jewel of the Legion. It was all coming down to this, in the end - with her and Thal'kiel now positioned as heirs apparent.
