Shadow Hunter

Native to dark tunnels far beneath the earth, shadow hunters are huge serpents, “over 40 feet long” as adults with a massive diameter of five feet. That ratio is a little off on the face of it. For a little perspective, this size range is within the range of the largest snake known from the fossil record, Titanoboa, is around three feet, less than a 1:10 width:length ratio. Still, even a three foot wide snake is frightening, and the size is quite a bit longer than modern snakes, and the hatchlings are still Medium-size. Just to make things more interesting, shadow hunters have a shadowblend power that makes them harder to hit thanks to concealment and they gain a Stealth bonus in those conditions, too. These creatures are harder to hit in the dark, they live deep underground, and for bonus points, they like eating elves. You don’t find a lot of creatures out there with the guts to go, “You know what, we’re having drow for dinner”, but the shadow hunter makes that claim. With a Constitution-targeting poison, that’s something they can pull off, especially with their habit of flanking prey through side tunnels in groups. We’ve got a really big snake that likes to hunt drow in small groups on our hands. There is regrettably little on their social habits – with Int 5 and Cha 3, shadow hunters aren’t going to be elite socialites, but they’ve got enough smarts to communicate to a higher degree than mammalian predators like wolves or lion.

Having come far nearer to the surface than most, a shadow hunter has become the divine beast at the heart of their worship, a sign of favor from their bloody-handed god and the panoply of spirits who answer his call. These orcs favor stealth and ambush over sheer strength, lying in wait to drag prey down before landing savage, vicious blows with the kind of power few but orcs can muster. The greatest hunters of the tribe carry shadow hunter poison, gathered with heavily drugged ritual sacrifices who cause the serpent to become torpid, allowing the scarred witch doctor who tends it to gather the precious poison safely.

Among the drow of Vanrakken, hunting the shadow hunters that roam the tunnels beyond the city’s fungal caverns is a sport of the nobles. Demonstrating prowess at the hunt is a way to gain prestige but for outsiders, it’s a potentially dangerous way to advance themselves socially. Some of the matriarchs take offense – real or feigned – and will declare them to have violated the laws of the city. (These laws are so numerous and bloody-minded that a thriving industry of swashbuckling lawyers, skilled in letters, law, and swordplay, has sprung up to interpret them and advance cases, whether by argument or by duel.)

Though known for several centuries, the abandoned dwarf hold known as Khor Olghur has seen little in the way of looting. In addition to the cunning traps and handful of constructs left behind, a nest of shadow hunters have taken up residence in the tunnels and caverns that lead to the lost dwarven community. Though it’s not their intention, they have protected Khor Olghur from despoilers for decades, to the point that at least one dwarven priest has declared them sacred guardians of the great god Tormok.
