Sha'ir (Updated)
Heres the sha'ir again! Its got some minor quality of life changes, mostly adjusting a couple of the abilities for the gens and their subtypes. Though also notably, retrieval is changed a bit: Retrieving cached spells is much faster (1d4 rounds compared to the older 1 minute) but! Preparing learnt spells costs gold now whenever you change what you've got prepared!
Yeah :]

fuck I just realized how dangerous it is for Serot to have counterspell cast on him. it'll literally cause his spell to explode in his face.
#OOC / HOLLY.#The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook is out of date but I refuse to let go of the side effects of ghul lords they're cool#actually based on what they say I have to assume that#their spells [drawn directly from the Plane of Death] will react explosively with spells from any other source#so not just the Weave but from other planes etc#regardless of what the book tries to specify#hence why ghul lords have been used for centuries to combat other casters#if one of their spells touches yours it explodes. further their magic is said to be unpredictable#still haven't decided how the Elemental Chaos affects this but#anyway his fav thing is to explode other people's spells with one of his own#it's less fun when the tables turn and someone does it back to him tho#esp counterspell . . . he's squishy his own spells exploding in his face is bad SLKDH

Today I kinda decided to start another BG3 playthrough, and do to a re-do with Aranea, and when the moment of creating the Dream Guardian (Halim, once again), I had to stop myself, because I actually realized that I never drew Halim properly, and I had to.
I had to draw the man for whom Aranea would sell her soul to avenge him, even centuries after his demise.
I had to draw the man that made her heart rush with blood and life, the man for whom she she would burn an entire city down.
He is such an important character in Aranea's life and story that I had to properly give him a face (while I adore the CC one from BG3, you know me. I need to put my own personal touch lolol).
So, I went into a deep dive today and just quickly design both him and Aranea (though here she is still Halim's Zil) during their Zakharan Nights. While for Aranea I went for a mix of Ancient Egyptian and Fantasy, for Halim I went straight to Old Babylonia and Assiria. I like to imagine that, while Zakhara is directly inspired by the Middle East, all the different regions within the Lands of Fate have specific regional garments that are inspired by our IRL counterpart of the Ancient Civilizations.
But, ohmy poor heart. It was like in a wrench while I drew Aranea so young and hopeful and innocent, devoid of any sufference, with her beloved husband still by her side...before everything went south.
I don't think she ever smiled so serenely and so happily after losing Halim. She had a good time in Cania with Mephistopheles, but her whole persona is always almost surrounded by melancholy.
And I have to say, I love Halim as I created him.
He is a kind man, level-headed, soft, kind but just. A man of exceptional intelligence and eloquence, with unweavering moral strength, a Sha'ir whose word would always be heeded, and the most loving of husbands to Aranea.
The satin shawls that Aranea is donning in this artwork is actually an enchanted artefact that Halim has imbued with powerful Nocturnal Magic that allows Aranea to walk outside during the scorching heat of the Zakharan sun (despite her having lived in Zakhara all her life up until that point, Aranea is still very much a Drow).
Also, do not let the differene of height in the artwork fool you. Aranea is still very much 183 cm tall here; It's just that Halim is 210 cm tall, since he has Desert Giant blood in his vein, and that render him much taller than a normal human. Let's just say he towers over everyone, whenever he walks around Huzuz.
Well, I hope you will like this!

Wizard types: Krynn (Dragonlance), Athas (Dark Sun), Mystara, and the Sha'ir of Zakhara (Al'Qadim), respectively.
There's an interview with I forget who about the design of the 3.0 Sorcerer being based off of the desire to have someone besides the Wizard use the same spells due to the amount of real estate (pages) those took up. (Mechanically, it was a variant Wizard: same HD, same base attack bonus progression, same saves, same skill points per level [and mostly the same class skills; they lost Knowledge {all}], same armor and shield proficiencies, same familiar, same spell list; more weapon proficiencies, more spell slots, fewer available spells, no bonus feats.)
And we still ended up with psionics, which ended up being "sorcerer with a mana system" instead of "sorcerer with spell slots." And then the Warlock came about with the same flavor as sorcery and roughly the same mechanics as psionics had in the Monster Manual (before the Psionics Handbook).
It's kinda like how there are fourteen varieties of "human but big that is stupid and eats people" in the Monster Manual and none of the names used match the monster they describe with their folkloric origins. (See Troll especially.)
People who treat D&D's classes as like being in any way representative of fiction outside of D&D are my nemesis, I just saw a post that was like "remember the difference between a Sorcerer a Warlock and a Wizard is this" and treating like those words as if their very D&D specific meanings were like universally accepted I'm going to start taking hostages

Hunter Black Page 270 - Sic 'Em!
What I Said Then: "Remember how I mentioned a D&D character of mine for whom Jasoom Badrali was named? He was a sha’ir, a class introduced in the al-Qadim campaign setting. Basically, they were spellcasters who acquired spells via minor djinn that went and found the spells for them. That same friend who still calls me Jasoom Badrali played the quintessential sha’ir in our campaign. His character was named Al’Dahan, a name I’ve already appropriated for the pointy-eared dudes we met in Iosephus’ store in back in Book One. His djinn was named…you guessed it: Cal-Tir. Cal-Tir was nothing like this little spider-monkey dude, physically speaking. Heck, I think Cal-Tir was FEMALE. Anyway, that’s where these names come from. So, if Lando Calrissian was a 2nd Edition sha'ir…he’d be Jasoom Badrali."
What I'm Saying Now: There are certain characters in D&D that stand out above all the rest. Al'Dahan was one of those. Jasoom Badrali was not...but he had a much cooler name.

My Characters 6: Kyki Starchaser
We’re back with another special on my various characters that I have played or desire to play!
Growing up in a desert land known for it’s ties to elementals and genies, Kyki had a typical childhood for a gnome growing up in a walled city. In particular, she was always fascinated by the wealth of wonders to be found at the bazaar, such a spices, beautiful works of art, and of course, magic. Her favorite, however, were items forged or empowered by the elements. Jewelry made from sand glass, perfectly polished river stones, and the like. She seemed to be able to read impressions from these objects as well, getting flashes of insight as to their history.
When she was old enough to travel, she hired herself out as an assistant to a merchant, hoping to see even more wonders, and it was on her travels that she realized her insight was more than just intuition, but the spark of occult understanding.
Fascinated, she did research into the nature of her gift, and in doing so, learned how to call forth her jin companions, Zepra, Kragg, and Smoldr, the three of which being usually small, but with an infusion of her power, can grow to great size and unnerving handsomeness.
With her own power established, Kyki quit her job in favor of the life of an adventurer, eagerly seeking new wonders with her elemental allies in tow.
Ever-curious and ever-fearless, Kyki has been described as naïve and reckless before, but to her it’s simply being eager to explore and accept what life has to offer as one would accept a gift. While she finds the idea of violence abhorrent, she is also aware of the harshness of life. She won’t start hostilities, but she will end them. She’d much rather make a new friend and share her interests with them. Few things excite her more than a brilliant mind willing to indulge her in debate and observation.
As a gnome, Kyki is a short, spritely thing with brown skin and bright blue hair that she wears in a messy ponytail. Her elemental allies joke that such is the missing “water” to their elemental trio.
Kyki favors the loose desert attire from her homeland, but always wears brightly-colored outfits regardless of weather, and she is never seen without her braided skirt of trinkets, each composed of a material weathered and changed by the elements, worn stones, fire-blackened wood, and so on.
For this build, Kyki is a gnome with the explorer alternate racial trait, and her class will be the sha’ir archetype for occultist, preferably taking an air jin as her first choice (Zepra) with the conjuration school, followed by Smoldr the fire jin with evocation and gem-studded Kragg the earth jin with the enchantment school. She would be built for damage-dealing, utility, and social encounters in terms of her skills, spells, and focus powers. As far as magic items go she would favor those made from natural materials or with a clear elemental connection.
That does it for today, but I hope you enjoyed it!

I'm 90% sure I've spoken on this topic before, but one of the most interesting classes to me from 3.5 was the Sha'ir, a caster wholly revolving around the use of their familiar to grant them spells.
While that may sound like the Witch, it's seriously not. A Witch's familiar acts as a liaison between the Witch and their patron, but a Sha'irs Gen familiar physically Plane Shifts across the multiverse to bargain for the Sha'irs spells. To cast any spell, the Sha'ir first had to tell their familiar which one they want, at which point the little bugger would shift away to Fantasy Walmart or wherever to find the arcane and elemental energy needed to cast the spell and bring it back to their master, at which point the spell could finally be cast. The Sha'ir draw their Spells Known from the Wizard/Sorcerer list, but they also have knowledge of certain types of divine magic, letting them learn spells from specific elemental Domains (Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and a few other related ones).
The true power of the Sha'ir, and why it's so fascinating to me, is that the caster could send their Gen familiar to grab spells that they didn't know. If a Sha'ir successfully used Spellcraft to identify a spell, they could send their familiar off to get it, and even modify it with Metamagic! They could essentially Mega Man their enemies, learning new spells on the fly without leveling up. They could even use spells not on the Sha'irs spell list, including many divine spells, with this ability! And this is on top of the fact that they had the Spells Known of a Wizard, but the Spells Per Day of a Sorcerer, giving them incredible flexibility and longevity!
But there is a pretty harsh downside, as you may have guessed. The second largest is that if the Sha'irs familiar dies, they can't cast any spells until they perform a ritual to get it back. The largest downside? It takes forever to actually get their spells. Remember, their Gen is actually getting other Outsiders to give a bit of their power to the Sha'ir, and negotiations take a while. How long? An Arcane spell the Sha'ir already knows takes 1d4+spell level in rounds to fetch. An Arcane spell they DON'T know takes 1d6+spell level minutes. And a Divine spell? 1d4+spell level HOURS, regardless of if they know the spell or not. While a Sha'ir can 'hold' a spell's energy for several hours instead of casting it right away, they're really not useful as a combat caster, unless they can hold off their foe with their cantrips until their Gen gets back. There's also no way to pull your Gen back early, so I hope that level 6 Divine spell is worth the wait...
But you want to know what makes it even worse? A Gen has to bargain with Outsiders for spells. As in, use Diplomacy. It uses YOUR Diplomacy modifier to do this, and the DC to retrieve a spell starts at 20, rising and falling depending on factors such as if it's a spell you know, what level it is, if it's using Metamagic, if it's Divine or Arcane, or if you've asked for it already that day. If your Gen fails it's Diplomacy, not only do you not get the spell, but all that time it spent away from you was wasted. if it fails hard enough, it's even held back an additional 1d4 minutes!!! It doesn't use up a spell slot to fail a check like that, but damn does it hurt anyway.
The Sha'ir is an absolutely enthralling, unique class too feared for its potential to break the game, resulting in it being throttled by constraining time-wasting and luck-reliant mechanics, which is a shame because I'd LOVE to use it one day. A blaster caster build is suicidal, but an item crafter build...
#Pathfinder#dungeons and dragons#I'm aware there's an Archetype called Sha'ir in PF#it doesn't count

Here she is! A new Variant Class, the sha'ir! The sha'ir is my second favourite class in older dnd (first place going to the binder) because of the interesting gameplay in its design.
In gameplay, it's a Variant wizard with vancian-esque casting with you calling upon individual spells throughout the day, while also being aided by your gen Familiar.
And in flavour, it's a fun mix of the elemental planes alongside some historical influences from Arabia
I'm a big fan of how it turned out. I think I got a good mix of taking what I liked from 3.5, while making it work in 5e, while adding a whole new layer of gameplay.
A fun developer note was turning the historically classic "tech" of the sha'ir shuffle into a true and proper game mechanic.
And yeah, the gens are a good bit stronger in this, turning the class into a companion/summoner archetype of sorts.
I hope you enjoy reading (and hopefully playing) this as much I did writing it (:

Here's a selection of spells from The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook that I think are just fucking cool
#OOC / HOLLY.#gonna give Serot every damn necromancy spell in here SDLKFH#ngl I like that they considered the consequences of ghul lords drawing straight from the Negative Energy Plane#they can't cast anything that would be in contradiction to that plane's nature#their very health becomes impacted#and they're totally locked into necromancy spells even if pulling from other sourcebooks#but god all of these subclasses are pretty cool#like jackals who literally steal spells from other wizards rather than learn them#'they have the ability to actually reach into another wizard's mind and take those spells they want'#or mageweavers who work magic by weaving it into textiles#the consequence is they can't cast spells above 6th level#however they can cast additional low level spells [ie for every 7th level they get an extra 1st or 2nd and so on]#OR DIGITALOGISTS? OR ASTROLOGERS?#astrologers are real neat I think#'by focusing on a particular group of stars and studying a spell the astrologer 'hangs' that spell upon the constellation'#I didn't expect much from this book ngl but it has delivered#that having been said I haven't read it all in detail mostly skimmed#the societies sorcerous section for example I haven't touched at all#reference

NOT GOING TO LIE TO Y'ALL.
This time around, the first encounter with the Dream Guardian has been quite an emotional one.
When the scene started, I knew that Aranea would feel a whole earthquake inside; I knew she would feel shaken to her very core.
After not seeing Halim's face and kind eyes for over 200 years, after not hearing his deep, warm, gentle voice telling her that he was there to save her from the impending ceremorphosis, calling her Zil once again - a name she had all but forgotten-...It was not hard for me to image the ravaging maelstrom that would reopen every single wound she had managed to patch up in those two centuries without her heart.
She just couldn't believe what her eyes were showing her, because how -HOW- could he be standing in front of her? Alive, breathing and beaming rightneousness from all his being, strong as he had always been, still radiating that warmth that she has not felt since his death?
Like, I don't see her questioning the fact that he saved her from the fall from the Nautiloid nor the fact that they were in the Astral Plane, because Halim was a Sha'ir when alive, so him being able to use that kind of magic to save her or transport her to another Plane of Existence was not something Aranea didn't see first hand.
But I do believe that she would feel so overwhelmed by just seeing him in front of her again that she would fail to see how the Dream Guardian's mannerism are slightly different from Halim's, and to be honest, I think my girl will be willingly living in denial and oversee those differences, despite her gut feeling that something *is* off with him.
Also, Aranea's denial is deeply connected to the fact that she hadn't given herself the time to mourn Halim. After exacting her revenge in Huzuz and literally going full on "Cersei blowing up the Sept of Baelor", she was so overwhelmed by her own grief and so panicked that killing the people that murdered Halim didn't bring her the relief she thought it would, that it was then that she asked Mephistopheles to freeze her heart and keep it away from her, taking away all her pain and feelings with it.
Except, that even like this, she didn't get rid of all her feelings, and those that remained behind did indeed fester.
So, in a way, Aranea is still living with echoes of her own grief and pain, because she never actually gave herself the time to mourn and heal (fml, Shar has lost a potential acolyte with her. She would have made for an excellent Sharran).
So yeah, here you have a part of what went through my brain while seeing the first encounter with the Dream Guardian! (I had to slightly modify the screenshots, because the expression of the Tav were not poignant enough. Too dead in the eyes. I NEED EMOTIONS FOR EMOTIONAL SCENES).
Also, becauseall of this was so sad, allow me to share a screenshot of Aranea with her new dress and hairstyle to cheer up the mood (I gave in to the mods, and found hair and dress that were just *perfect* for her eheheh)

Sha’ir (Occultist Archetype)
In the real world, a sha’ir is a descriptor used to refer to a pre-Islamic arab poet who was believed to have magical powers and to be able to commune with djinn and other spirits. The origin of the term is not known, but they were able to inspire their allies during wartime, and were considered a great boon as wise men.
Today’s archetype is actually not the first time that “sha’ir” has been used in tabletop roleplaying, with the Al Qadim campaign setting for The World’s Oldest Roleplaying Game using the term for one of the character classes unique to the setting.
However, today we’re looking at the pathfinder interpretation of the concept, which plays up the “communes with genies” side of things.
These occultists form a bond with a rare, insubstantial form of genie that are associated with each element, physically identical to weak elementals, but possessing occult knowledge in spades, granting their magic to the occultist, and the occultist granting some of their own power in kind in a mutually beneficial relationship.
Rather than learn how to channel implement schools normally through objects, they instead summon and make pacts with the so-called jin, bonding with a total of three during their careers. Individually, these beings are weaker even than small elementals. However, they grant not only the spells and focus powers of an implement school, but also the spells of one of the four western elementalist schools of magic for wizards, appropriate to their element. In other words, each jin grants twice as many spells as a single implement school choice, just drawn from two different lists, but requiring the jin to remain close and alive to be able to cast with no problems. Thankfully, they can be easy enough to replace with a ritual.
At first, these jin can’t do much on their own, but by expending energy stored in them, the sha’ir can briefly augment them. At first this just includes granting the basic abilities of an elemental of the jin’s type. However, later, they can increase their size and might to resemble larger elementals. As they grow in level, smaller elemental sizes become easier, and the maximum power grows higher, until finally they can even turn jin into powerful elder elementals for a few brief moments.
With mastery, they can also keep one of their jin constantly as a small elemental without expending power, and even shift which one is so manifested by focusing.
Additionally, rather than call upon other outsiders to gather information and perform minor tasks for them, these occultists instead command one of their jin to do the same. However, doing so means that obviously that jin will be far away and unavailable to grant its power to the occultist during that time.
This archetype is a fun take on the occultist, granting them tiny minions that can turn into big minions. However, their biggest weakness is the definitely the vulnerability of the little guys, so definitely invest in protections for them, lest one errant fireball rob you of most of your magical abilities. A good strategy might be to invest plenty of mental focus into one jin to buff up into a powerful tank, while keeping the others close to provide their spellcasting. Or, you might decide to spread it around more evenly, perhaps taking extra mental focus feats to dial up how much you have to work with. Also look at the spells on the elementalist spell lists, and how various combinations of school spells and elemental spells can be combined.
Fans of Golden Sun’s magic system of having pet elemental beings around providing spells may not get the elemental combined summons like that series, but they’ll definitely delight in deriving their magic from cute otherworldly beings.
Moving on from that, one can imagine that depending on their personal philosophy, these mystics may have different relationships with their jin partners, ranging from slave-driving masters to those that live in harmonious partnership with them.
He doesn’t know how, but Mashinn is sure he is being watched. However, neither he nor his jin partners can pinpoint the source of this surveillance, which takes the form of a nearly invisible slithering tracker, the puddle-like ooze having been sent by one of his rivals.
Eagerly seeking to defy the fate her heritage has meted out for her, Vilmei made a pact with the element of fire, seeking to find a way to turn away from the water, and her eventual transformation as a deep one hybrid. Until then, she pays her way with her mastery of magics of protection and as a seer.
On their quest to put an end to the Lord of Elements Bound, the party must first defeat his generals, including the one knowns as the Collector, a robed sha’ir who specializes in rare elementals, having an ice, magma, and aether elemental under his thumb.
