and this is a wednesday personal but the way the game is setting up stuff does make it feel like the remake was made with the ritual ending being canon in mind i do think like the "real" ending is like the Water but like the "true" ending is the ritual given like the intent and development and where they wanted to take the series that was ultimately halted by the need to make money and im pro that cause ive bleed and died on hills saying the ritual is like The Canon intention

Scarlet Hollow chapter 4 spoilers ahead!

Also, this picture is heavily referenced from a scene in Spirited Away (one of my favorite scenes)!

Initially did this as a banner for my blog, but I liked it enough that I figured I'd make it a post as well! The first time I got the golden ending for chapter 4 and saw that one of the options was to have your character put their hand on Reese's face, this scene popped into my head. Needless to say, I think about it often haha.

I like to imagine forehead touches are a common occurrence for these two! It's part of their love language.

On Doc Kelly and Reese's family dynamic (Scarlet Hollow spoilers)

I feel like Doc Kelly gets an unfair amount of heat for the decisions she makes. Do I think it's fair that Reese spent like 10 years locked up in his house? No. Do I think he deserved to know about what was really happening? Yes. Do I think that he would benefit from coping and anger strategies in the long term? Yes. But, realistically, what was Joan supposed to do?

The problem is that Reese transforms into whatever-the-fuck that was -- I think it was supposed to be some kind of Jersey devil-type creature? -- whenever he gets angry. And he is fully capable of hurting people when he's like that. We see that in Episode 4. Your options in that episode are (a) let him eat his mom, (b) kill him, or (c) maintain the status quo. Which are also Joan's options. You may get a fourth option under particular circumstances.

I've seen some people saying that she should have taught him skills to manage his anger and prevent himself from shifting and like, how? I get the feeling that the Doc doesn't actually have a lot of those skills herself, and like a lot of people from the rural south, she seems to distrust mental health professionals. Even if she did trust mental health professionals, how is she going to tell a therapist that her son transforms into a literal monster when he throws a temper tantrum? Not only is that not in any parenting book, she is all alone in her struggle. She's probably scared shitless to tell anyone in case they decide that Reese is too dangerous to live. Reese's father, who might know how to help Reese, is not only not around, she didn't even know he was real when he impregnated her. The one person that she does go to for help tells her to poison him. Also, some kids can be destructive when they throw tantrums -- Reese can be literally deadly, and there is not a lot of room to fuck it up if the coping skills don't work.

I do think there was a place where things could have gone differently. Like she said, Reese was never a bad kid. The first time he shifted, he could see that he scared his mom. And -- at least if you choose the "she's just doing this to protect herself, show her you aren't a monster" option -- I think this is at play during the climax of episode 4. When he really looks at his mom, he realizes she's afraid of him and I don't think he really wants that. Whatever fear and hurt and anger exists between them, there is also love. I think if she had leaned on that from the beginning, things would have gone differently. But there was a lot of fear and isolation.

Doc Kelly is doing the best she can with the information she has, and she acts from a place of both fear and love. For all that Reese is a prisoner, Joan is too. She doesn't just lock her son away from the world to protect him and the people he may hurt -- she willingly seals herself in with him. I think that earns her a little grace.

I got four tropes/prompts from a meme generator on Twitter and they immediately made me think of some what if’s with the Magnus/Valentine body swap storyline.

What if Alec didn’t save Magnus in time? What if Alec had to kill Valentine wearing Magnus’ face?? What if Alec never stopped grieving? What if Asmodeus was furious after learning his favorite son was executed because of Azazel’s games????

There was too much potential angst to ignore and not try to write it 😆

more remake bitching.

still can't really get past the voices. the game itself seems way too action oriented. I don't like how spacious everything is, it takes away from the more claustrophobic feel of the original.

not a fan of how the radio doesn't go off for every enemy. the whole point of the radio is to let you know when enemies are near. making it go off only here and there feels really silly.

despite bloober's best efforts to make stuff disgusting and dirty, it still feels way too clean. there's a certain grittiness that is not present and was such a big part of the SH aesthetic and it not being there really throws things off.

the lighting is not right and it can make certain things look artificial and plastic-y which again not a fan of. also in some areas, such as first PH encounter, have way too warm of a lighting. in the og it was more cool and neutral. also the overall scene is so mehh and it doesn't feel as impactful as the original.

the original just throws you this horrific image of PH doing violent and sexually suggestive things to this mannequin creatures (which I feel symbolic of james' sexual repression and issues and idc what ito worshippers say), and the remake just..gives you this lacklustre kinda anti-climatic scene and it just does not hit the same. I did not like hearing james' heavy breathing, I feel it took away from the scene and was too b horror movie. it just didn't fit.

everyone stands out way too much from the fog. the fog feels like a background prop and not like something that eclipses everything in the original. the characters blend in with it and are surrounded by it, but in the remake they stand out and it's all behind them, thus making them feel green screened in.

also not a fan of the constant talking. I know that's a thing in modern games for characters to talk out loud and have little conversations but I don't want that in a silent hill game. I play silent hill for the story as well as the ambience and a big part of the ambience is hearing creepy noises, hearing the music and other auditory details in the background. I do not want to hear people talking all the damn time.

so yeah, the whole game feels very mid to me and I'm frustrated because there is a part of me that wants to be as excited as everyone else but I am just not. the game feels way too action focused and it's been modernized in a way where it feels not like silent hill anymore, and there's some stuff I struggle to articulate because it's this vague feeling of being off.

A part of me is glad that the game that gets the remake is SH2, and not SH3.

Yes, I expect to see a butchered version of all the characters in SH2, but I'm... you know, kinda accustomed to it? Because reducing James' character to the "horny wife-murderer" is daily bread, to name one example.

SH3 and its characters aren't as widely discussed. And when I think about all the potential ways it could be butchered... About the discourse...

Stay away from Heather and gang, Kanami. :) You still think SH is just a RE rip-off. :)
