Poetry in motion. Dance of the nets. "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." It was soothing just watching the man wade out to try, again and again, in the evening light, as dusk came upon the shores. #fishing #fishinglife #net #PasirRi #PasirRisPark #chilling #chillin #life #PassionMadePossible #Singapore #sgmemory #SingaporeInsiders #wonderlustsingapore #Sgig #whatissingapore #ExploreSG #ExploreSingapore #instasg #igsg #sgconservation #lovinsingapore #instagramsg #VisitSingapore #ExploringSingapore #instagramsg (at Pasir Ris Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR-oXQ6HRxU/?utm_medium=tumblr

I must say one thing about the British - they really knew how to picked picturesque locations for the buildings and homes they built in Singapore from the time they arrived till the time they withdrew. This was the former View Road Hospital - you can peek right across the Causeway where the Japanese invaded Singapore from. Thanks to @nhb_sg for the peek at the recent Battle for Singapore tour which commemorates the Fall of Singapore to the Japanese during World War II @singaporelandauthority "The State property at 10 View Road once served as accommodation for the Naval Base Police Force from the 1950s to the early 1970. It was also known for its time as View Road Hospital, a branch of Woodbridge Hospital (now the Institute of Mental Health) until the early 2000s. Starting out as an unfinished building before the war and a completed one by 1945, recent research has uncovered that the history of the building dates back much further than what is popularly known. This tour of Former View Road Hospital will unveil what is thought of the building’s past dating to WWII and the Japanese defence of Singapore during the Japanese Occupation." #BSG2020 #BattleForSingapore #SLASecretSpaces #SLAStateProperty #WW2 #viewroadhospital #nationalheritageboard #sghistory #sgheritage #PassionMadePossible #Singapore #sgmemory #SingaporeInsiders #wonderlustsingapore #Sgig #whatissingapore #ExploreSG #ExploreSingapore #instasg #igsg #sgconservation #lovinsingapore #instagramsg #VisitSingapore #ExploringSingapore #instagramsg #igsingaporefood (at Former View Road Hospital) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9gs5n7narZ/?igshid=wvka5y3cmik0

It's like time stood still here and we'll be transported back to the 1930s Singapore. . Singapore still has these hidden gems - beautiful old houses built pre-war by Europeans or British architects. The layouts inside reminds me of descriptions of English houses from Enid Blyton books with their pantry, little room under the stairs, narrow passageways that leads to all the rooms but, with a tropical twist. This house on Watten Estate,126, is a far more unusual and beautiful design than most of these pre-war colonial houses. It has these unusual gables. What is also common are the large tracts of land and greenery that surrounds these colonial houses. I guess again, it's a throwback to Manor houses in UK with forests or farmland part of the grounds. . . What I love most about these old colonial houses is the land that surrounds them. Large tracts of verdant greenery as far as the eyes can see. You feel like you're not in Singapore. I love imagining what it was like to look out the windows and doors and see this lovely scene. "The architect behind the designs for the houses, I was pleasantly surprised to learn, was the preeminent Major Percy Hubert Keys. Major P. H. Keys is best known for efforts that were quite significantly larger in scale and included the likes of the Fullerton Building, the Bowyer Block of Singapore General Hospital and the (King Edward VII) College of Medicine, all of which stand today as National Monuments." - The Long and Winding Road blog Discovering Singapore’s Best Kept Secrets - Discovering Keys’ Dutch-gabled houses Thank you to The Long and Winding Road @jeronimoloco and #SLASecretSpaces #SLAStateProperty @Singaporelandauthority for the visit . #gable #colonialhouse #sghistory #sgheritage #sgarchitecture #houses #archilovers #architecture #PassionMadePossible #Singapore #sgmemory #Alistsg #SingaporeInsiders #wonderlustsingapore #Sgig #whatissingapore #ExploreSG #ExploreSingapore #instasg #igsg #sgconservation #lovinsingapore #instagramsg #VisitSingapore #ExploringSingapore #instagramsg #igsingapore https://www.instagram.com/p/BnOaL97n9Zj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xuqm1rs38ukz

"With what could be described as Dutch gables prominently displayed, the pair of houses right at end of Watten Estate Road gives the area a distinct feel. The houses are what remain of a cluster of six. Erected from the late 1920s (when four were constructed) and into the mid-1930s (when another two were added), the houses occupied a plot of land that had once been part of the vast Chasseriau Estate. All similar in design, the houses were each given a uniquely shaped gable Dutch gable. Perched on a small hill and with its verdant surroundings, the setting for the cluster of houses could quite easily have resembled a Dutch or Flemish country village." - The Long and Winding Road blog. . .
