Parking management helps in overall utilization of available parking spaces, enhance traffic flow & reduce congestion.
Story Outline
Rising population & urbanization in United States have led to an increasing number of vehicles on road, resulting in higher demands for parking management services.
Smart parking management systems like San Francisco’s SFpark program & various tech start-ups have been successful in reducing congestion & improving parking experiences. These systems use sensors & AI-enabled platforms to use parking spaces.
Despite the overabundance of parking spots in the US, due to minimum parking requirements policies, the growing number of registered vehicles & revival of ride-sharing platforms like Uber, emphasize the need for developing parking solutions to meet the existing demands.
According to Ken Research, the US Parking Management market is expected to reach $9 billion in 2028, due to increasing population & different kinds of vehicles increasing in number, which demand different kinds of parking services for every parker.

Changes Proposed to Keep Cars King of Golden Gate Park
Cars - Golden Gate Park’s most cherished resource.
Anyone who goes into Golden Gate Park by foot or bike, immediately knows they don’t belong there. Last year a bicyclist even died in the park, and that’s why the SFMTA is ready to protect our most cherished San Franciscans - cars. So the mayor asked the SFMTA to devise a plan that does the bare minimum and keep cars driving and parking everywhere for free. The project’s goals can be found here.
SFMTA makes note of a person dying in Golden Gate Park as a reason why they’re willing to make tepid car-friendly changes to the park.
The SFMTA used index cards to collect all the potential ideas for Golden Gate Park. Ideas included:
Remove free on-street parking
Manage and charge for parking
Install bike lanes on all park streets
Divert all through traffic to the 2 ARTERIAL roads surrounding the park
Limit speed to 15 mph
Triple traffic fines within the park
Once all the ideas were collected, they were thrown into a dumpster and set on fire.
The SFMTA then came up with “solutions” that wouldn’t impact motorists in the slightest, honored suburban style street design, and treated bicyclists and pedestrians like second class citizens.
The SFMTA proposes adding a smattering of paint, some signs, and maybe even a few raised crosswalks and blinking lights in a grand show of safety theater. Fortunately none of the proposed changes will do anything to reduce the amount of people driving and parking for free in the park.
If you want to thank the SFMTA, Mayor Ed Lee and Ed Reiskin for all their hard work keeping cars everywhere in the park, you can thank them by filling out their survey here.
We heard you don’t want cars in the park, but we’re putting cars in the park, because of cars. - SFMTA

Muni is beefing up security at a time when crime is plummeting on the San Francisco transit system — a stark contrast to its regional neighbor, BART.
Crime on Muni has dropped from 2,236 reported incidents in 2014 to 1,145 in 2018 and trending down again with 461 incidents in the first half of 2019, through June.
Still under pressure to improve, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency tapped a veteran of the Baltimore Police Department to be the next chief security officer of the bus and train system.
At the same time, the Board of Directors is weighing a $60 million, three-year security contract that would increase the number of unarmed and armed guards patrolling bus yards, major platforms and ticket vending kiosks. The plan would increase Muni’s security spending by about 30%.
SFMTA gets a lot of flack for its failures – and the agency has no shortage of them – but it does have successes as well.
For years Muni has invested in alternatives to law enforcement, such as civilian security guards and surveillance cameras. Its subway stations have sturdy fare gates with tall rubber panels to deter cheats — a model that BART seeks to emulate when it replaces its fare gates.

“Beginning in mid-January, motorists who park in the city’s 30,200 metered spaces, or in its lots and garages, will be charged more during peak times and less when demand isn’t as high. Hourly rates will vary by time of day and block by block and be adjusted up or down four times a year, depending on actual use during the previous quarter.
The Municipal Transportation Agency board approved the plan Tuesday on a 5-0 vote.
Although several US cities have experimented with limited versions of demand-based pricing, San Francisco is the first one to apply the system across the city.
results from the sfpark pilot program.
“SFMTA planners say their goal is to increase the availability of coveted city parking spaces, particularly in areas where demand is high. Where demand-based rates are raised, drivers will be motivated to shorten their stays. Or they will park outside of high-demand blocks, where rates are lower, or even leave their cars at home.
Either way, the number of people cruising through neighborhoods during high-demand times will be reduced, and more spots will open up sooner, said Hank Willson, the MTA’s parking policy manager.
The intent, he said, is to make sure a space or two is available on each block.
“It is so exciting to see this go citywide,” board Chairwoman Cheryl Brinkman said after the vote. “It will be invisible to most people — but they will be able to find a parking place.””

YES.
transportation planning WIN.
good job san francisco for following data analysis and research rather than political whimsy and popular misconceptions.
street parking is a public resource being used by private property. it should have a cost to be used, as any other scarce economic good. pricing parking right increases access to it, while underpricing (or giving parking away for free) it makes people leave their cars out for hours, keeping other people from coming.

You go there for the Sacilian seafood dishes but if your lucky enough to meet Paul Capurro he might tell you a story or two.
