Innovadora, la Sinfónica de San Francisco
Por Lupita Franco Peimbert. San Francisco Symphony. Gala de Apertura de Temporada. Sept 22, 2023.

"Elain handled the darkness of the Cauldron therefore she can handle Azriel's darkness."
Elain handled the Cauldron because she's brave and has strength of character. Using that to try to prove that she'd be fine with Azriel's cruelty darkness is so far off the mark it's wild.
Feyre, married to the High Lord of the NC - a HL who who misted people at Amarantha’s behest, who stole from someone he would have liked to have as a friend, who shamed Feyre and called her human trash (all in order to protect her and Velaris), when she herself brought down an entire court filled with innocent people to take out her revenge on Tamlin, even struggled around Az at first.
Currently struggles with Az's actions:
The author herself said she'd be scared of Az:
She wrote Rhys saying Az's stare sometimes scares the shit out of him.
Azriel created a symphony of pain for his victims, he's not being forced into taking things to that sort of extreme. That's not someone just doing what they have to do, that's someone taking things well beyond necessity.
Yet somehow Elain, who in the authors own words has a different sort of strength than the sisters who belong in the NC, who is gentle and kind and is bothered by cruelty would be the one who would fully embrace Azriel's darkness?
Elain who begged Feyre not to hurt Graysen, tried to get her to swear to leave Graysen unharmed? That Elain would be fine seeing what Az does to unarmed prisoners?
This Elain?
This Elain?
There is a HUGE difference between bravery and saving someone from death versus someone who methodically carries out torture and defaults to it as their go to method of handling enemies.
Elain used TT to stop the King from harming her loved one. Az uses TT to carve people up and draw out their suffering. They are NOT the same.
In SF, the author drew attention to the fact that Nesta, not Feyre or Elain, was the Archeron to see Az:
I also saw this person claiming that if Elain can handle Lucien's "darkness", she can handle Az's, that Lucien is a loose canon compared to Az.
Lucien:
Az:
It's true, Az barely says much at all but it's not because he's more controlled than Lucien, it's because he's always on a razors edge of losing his temper and rarely opens up about himself to anyone which is proven in the text.
I've hit my limit in added images but there are multiple examples of Lucien reigning in his words and temper.
Does Lucien at times snark at others? Definitely and that's why he's the best. But to say he's the loose canon is a joke.
There's zero shame in loving Az, to get a thrill from his darkness and rage, but if someone truly thinks Lucien and Az are written similarly than I have to say they don't truly understand how Sarah has written these characters at all.
And to those who say if Elain can't handle Az's darkness than neither can Gwyn..... These are the same people who claim she's so forgettable they barely remembered her in SF yet now they're claiming they know what she can and can't handle. When you get down to it Gwyn is a new character and that means Sarah can further develop her personality any way she wants in the next books compared to the many books and interviews telling us who Elain is.
Considering Gwyn already said this, however:
“Did you know shields weighed so much? I certainly didn’t. No wonder the Valkyries learned to use them as weapons as deadly as their swords.” She sighed. “They’d have been quite a sight in battle: cracking open enemy skulls with blows from their shields, throwing them to knock an opponent onto their backs before skewering them …” She rubbed her shoulder again. “Their arm muscles must have been as hard as steel.”
I don't think she'll have any trouble with Az's brutality at all.

Dropping him here like an nuclear missile
MY HOME BOY ZEKE!
And oc-ified version of one of the background characters (who's real name is Flea but I reject canon). I made him into a little vigilante guy, ain't he spiffy
Longer description below:
Ezekiel “Zeke” Salazar- Part of Phil's nefarious bully group and surprisingly does the least amount of bullying, mostly parroting Phil's insults. Kinda quiet, people often assume he is stupid (or even mentally challenged) cuz of it, but he's a bright and friendly fellow. Doesn't talk much, to the point of being selectively mute. Although, if you're close to him, he can be quite the chatterbox. Sticks around Phil for his own protection, cuz he used to get bullied cuz of his appearance. He's very nice and caring, but has to play up a tough act when with Phil and Janette. Very helpful and kind of a sweetie. Has an affinity for the arts, specifically of the graffiti variety. Actually kind of shy about his art and will freak out if you look at his sketchbook (ehem Sam). He likes to paint, specifically make graffities in cool abandoned places. He also has niche hobbies like yo-yos and close up magic. Part of the art club at Symphony High (with a cult like following in the art department). Not very popular at school, tho not disliked either.
Admires Shred Force and thinks they're really cool. His favorite is Sam, cuz he finds her dynamic moves fun to draw. Draws self insert fanart of SF for Phil. Actually became a vigilante because of them, but only really started being good when he found a magical melodica (former property of The collector). The gas mask might make him look scary, but he's a sweetheart.

Finally got to see the campus tonight because we went out to see the university's symphony orchestra. Ah, nostalgia! The conductor chose repertoire that was kinda punching above these kids' weight class but they gave it a valiant effort. Incidentally, I found out they do invite members of the community to audition, but I'm not really jonesing for orchestral repertoire anymore and their violin sections are plenty full; that small stage was practically groaning under the weight of everyone on it.
I'm aware that my experience of high school orchestra may have been something of an... outlier... (living in SF where a ridiculous number of kids were either taking lessons from former/active members of the SFS or were students at the SFCM), but I didn't quite realize how incredibly fucking spoiled I also was going to a university with such a huge and extremely hardcore music department. I'm glad I got to take advantage of it for music theory and history, and also that I got to attend so many fucking awesome concerts, but I'm sad that I was so burnt out on... life... by that point that I didn't have the energy to commit to the performance side of a music minor. What might have been, had I taken a different path...
One fun thing about watching this orchestra is that I think I spotted some violinists who come from a bluegrass or trad Irish background instead of classical. The way they hold the violin is more forward-facing like a Baroque violin, even though they're on modern instruments. Whereas the classically-trained kids all hold their violins with a very uniform modern left-shoulder grip. If I'm right, I wanna know where I can hear them do some fiddling too.

The reptilian entities writhe and contort, their scaly forms merging with glitched realities. They slither through the distorted corridors of existence, their presence a grotesque reflection of the underlying chaos that permeates the universe. The reptilian becomes a symbol of primordial disruption, a reminder of the ancient forces that linger beneath the surface of our perceived reality. Their presence defies conventional understanding, defragments the boundaries of perception, and evokes a disconcerting blend of fascination and repulsion. The reptilian's form shapeshifts and distorts, a manifestation of glitched evolution and primal instinct. Its eyes, akin to glitched portals, gaze into the depths of the human psyche, exposing the primal fears and desires that lie dormant within. With each slithering movement, it leaves behind a trail of dissonant vibrations, unsettling the very fabric of our collective consciousness. The reptilian becomes a metaphor for the hidden truths that elude our grasp, the shadowy forces that influence our thoughts and actions. It is an invitation to confront the discomforting aspects of our existence, to embrace the disarrayed nature of our reality, and to question the narratives that bind us. The language of neoscatology morphs and mutates, mirroring the reptilian's elusive nature. Words blend and distort, creating a dissonant symphony of fragmented thoughts and shattered syntax. It is through this linguistic disarray that the essence of the reptilian is captured, its elusive presence defying traditional categorization and provoking a visceral response. The reptilian serves as a conduit for disarrayed introspection, a catalyst for exploring the depths of our fears and desires.

Listen i know everyone is like 'oh the chicago symphony recording is the best' for saint-saens symphony 3 but it is not. It's not! It's very good but it doesn't live in your bones the way it should. Seeing the sf symphony play it was fucking awesome. Brass in your veins, string in your nerves, and bass in your fucking bones as it should be.
This. That start of the fourth movement is a beautiful plunge into a crisp ocean of sound. I gotta find this cd somewhere.

E/riels: "How dare Elucien's support Jurian considering the vile things he said about the Illyrians harming Elain while pretending to be the bad guy knowing full well that nothing would actually happen to Elain and even though Sarah has since cleared his name by having Feyre and Rhys look into his mind proving his innocence.
Also E/riels: Oh my god, I can't wait for Az and Elain to end up together!"
Somehow Jurian saying something vile about the Illyrians while undercover, something he didn't mean, is unforgivable and a reason Elain can never be friends with him yet Az, just being himself but still not believing an entire people is worth saving makes him a great love interest for Elain. Simply because she wasn't included in his statement and that somehow proves Az's character is soooooo much better than Jurian’s. 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
It's interesting that the author never brought up Jurian’s comments after his truth was revealed yet she reminded us of Azriel's hatred of the Illyrians as recently as SF.
It's interesting that she never brought up Jurian’s comments after his truth was revealed but reminded us that cruelty bothers Elain and Az conducts torture in a symphony of pain as recently as SF.
But yeah, keep telling yourself that Jurian’s comments from multiple books back are going to be the reason Sarah doesn't write them as friends. 😂
#elain archeron#lucien vanserra#elucien#anti e/riel#jurian acotar#azriel shadowsinger#Jurian is literally no worse than any other main side character in this series#I didn't realize Elucien hate could cause this level of ridiculousness but here we are

Mahler’s 2nd with MTT, LSO and LSC, Alice Coote and Siobhan Stagg (20.10.24)
As MTT stepped out onto the stage and the audience erupted into applause, I could already feel emotional. Earlier this year, I made an off the cuff decision to purchase tickets to see Sunday’s performance without thinking about logistics. 2024 would usher in MTT turning 80 (in 2021, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma). I spent the late 90s-early 2010s seeing him conduct with the SFS and collecting his recordings with my late mother. There was a lot of nostalgia and memory attached to the event and it was building up to the moment he walked up to his stand, turning to us, the audience with a smile and saluting with his baton.
Mahler and MTT have become synonymous over the last three decades and I’ve only become semi-familiar with Mahler through the Keeping Score documentaries. MTT has been devoted to delivering Mahler’s ingenious craft through his entire career and so I knew we would be part of something special. Jonathan and I have listened to the “Resurrection” symphony on our own, read the pamphlet’s take—though nothing could prepare us for how immense, how powerful, how intense this piece of work is.
Mahler’s 2nd features an over-100 symphony (we’re talking every section was doubled: two timpani’s and eight double basses! not to mention, off-stage percussion and trumpets) and an over-100 LSO chorus so if you can picture it, the stage was completely filled out. It consists of 5 movements with the final divided into 3 subsections—it has 26 parts, took Mahler 6 years to compose and has a duration of 90 minutes. A wonderful quote from Mahler himself that there is no necessitation in explaining the “meaning of his Second symphony”; that he “was in no way concerned with the detailed setting…but rather of a feeling.”
A feeling?! More like a vast, dizzying array of all the feelings that human beings are capable of experiencing yet can’t quite make out. Mahler’s music is abstract, hard to describe, occasionally baffling so personally by movement:
I. With serious and solemn expression throughout: my favourite. I love the introduction of the nervous string tremolo with the double basses and cellos bringing forth the grim motif. Mahler has a thing for funeral marches but this is no funeral march you or I are familiar with. It’s dark, relentless and what a way to throw an audience into what feels like water rapids in the deep unknown.
II. Very moderate, never rushing: it’s a waltz! Kind of. If you watched TSoM, it would remind you of the Ländler (that pinnacle of romance!) and it’s a bit of light and hope contrasted against that fore-bearing introduction.
III. Calmly flowing: this bit is sarcastically jolly; brightness with an edge. It ends abruptly and jarringly.
IV: Very solemn but simple, like a chorale: mezzo-soprano Alice Coote is a powerhouse! she’s got such timbre and projection. She blew soprano Siobhan Stagg out the water later on.
V. Scherzo tempo: in a wild outburst: the finale has three sections bookmarked by moments of absolute stillness. You could hear a pin drop in the hall, that was how quiet those pauses were. Here were the off-stage horn and percussion calls and each time, the orchestra would swell a bit more than the previous until the chorus joins in, then the soprano and mezzo-soprano. As the entirety builds up to its final climax like Hansel’s Messiah complete with the sound of chimes as church bells, you could see the audience perching on the edge of their seats. The end is coming and you’re just waiting for that ultimate culmination of triumph—gates of heaven opening, there’s the resurrection.
The moment that last note was breathed, played, let loose into the atmosphere of the hall, the audience erupted into a 10 minute standing ovation. I felt like crying again because it was just pure respect and adoration pouring out into that hall. It felt like the world showed up for MTT; in that diverse audience of young and old, locals and internationals, no one wanted it to end (an encore after Mahler wouldn’t be right). MTT had a chair but he never really sat in it. The fervour of his conducting has toned down a bit but it didn’t lack the vibrancy to carry this enormous, massive work through to its end. He would do this again on Wednesday night, as I overheard another audience member preen about the fact he was coming to the Barbican again.
I don’t know if I’ll see MTT conduct again, which made Sunday night feel once in a lifetime to me and that I had the opportunity to share my love for classical music, a piece of my old home, San Francisco via MTT with my other half—it does bring a lot of emotions to the forefront. Life has been gruelling—Jonathan and I work in difficult settings. But as artist and writer Charlie Mackesy once said, “These notes can thread together to heal a broken heart.”
