Sierra Negra
Good evening from a hammock on Isabela Island! We're really living the Jimmy Buffett dream... Except add some learning and nix the Tommy Bahamas attire, although I wish I had a floral shirt now.
We woke up early this morning to a beautiful breakfast at our new hostel. The streets on Isabela Island in the morning remind me of what the streets of Hawaii might have been prior to heavy tourism; music playing as a man across the street sets up his restaurant, people bike down the sandy pathways, and the sun is already unforgiving (we're pretty used to it at this point). The big breakfast was needed as we would be hiking Sierra Negra volcano which is a 16 kilometers round trip.
At the base of the hike, you could see the sprawl of Isabela from below and steep hills above us leading to our destination. Esteban, our tour guide, told us the reason for the name 'Sierra Negra' is that when the clouds are not covering, the volcano appears like Sierra mountains from mainland.
In the first hour (approx. 8:30 - 9:30 am) we saw Galapagos ferns, finches, yellow warblers, a native fringe orchid, and introduced hydrangea trees. Fun fact: Hydrangea gets its color from the soil, for example if the soil has a basic pH, then the flower is blue. But if it is pink, then the soil has an acidic pH. Within the first hour we began to feel the combination of the heat and uphill so much to the extent that I overheard an intense debate about San Francisco ice creams (although homesickness might have played a factor). By the first mile mark we reached a fork in the road which separated the private property from the national park. Another fun fact: Before 1969, people chose their property by choosing whatever was in front of them. If they continued to farm > 50%, it would not go back to the National park. Now if only SF real estate was the same...
By the second hour (9:30-10:30 am), we saw the second biggest caldera in the world. The bottom had a combination of black and light brown layering. The black layering was new from the most recent eruption from 2005, while the lighter side was from older lava flow. Esteban told us that when the latest eruption happened, there were no evacuations or panic because the wind blew South from those watching in the North. The lava was nearly 1100 degrees Celcius yet most were cold because it was during October, which is one of the coldest months of the year on the Galapagos. I imagined standing from where we were watching and seeing avenues of lava lights and streets of indescribable heat. It sounds equally beautiful and terrifying.
In the caldera, straight ahead in the distance, there were some faint green spots. The green spots were lava cactuses and only grow 1 cm per year (the slowness is due the dense humidity). On the walk to the other side of the caldera, we saw several male carpenter bees which we learned were yellow, while the females were black. During mating season, females will come up to the men, which seemed unique from other mating rituals in which most of the time females are being chased (looking at you, iguanas, turtles, and tortoises). By the third hour (10:30-11:30 AM), we stopped for our boxed lunch the tour group gave us. The spot was a shaded half circle with benches surrounded by Jaboncillo trees (little soap trees). It was a really early lunch but we needed the energy. The scenery was romantic and green, but nearly immediately down a pathway from our "lunch" spot, we were greeted by what looked like the surface of Mars. Pretty jarring. I expected to walk on charred black rocks, yet we were all taken aback by how pretty the rocks were. Some had different colors due to being a different mineral (yellow is sulfur, white is sulfate) while most of it was a maroon color.
Dippets and crumbled tunnels covered area before we reached the top of Volcan Chico. From the top we could see Fernandina island (the newest) and the mileage of the eruption which occurred several decades prior. On the walk back we were greeted by a lot of rain and a lot of mud. Fortunately, we were prepared. While no field notes could be made at this time, maybe the most valiant effort was made by those wearing shoes with barely any traction. I'm proud to say on behalf of the whole group that no one slipped and we finished the hike just a little muddy.
We finished our day at Camp Duro, a type of 'glamping' experience that can only be summed up as lush because that's what it was aesthetically and how it made you feel walking around the grounds. To coax our wifi withdrawals, we reverted back to our inner child and played campfire games and told ghost stories. I'm absolutely serious. To top it off, we all crashed into a warm slumber underneath towering coconut trees.
So, maybe not entirely like Jimmy Buffett, but then again, the day was perhaps far more fulfilling. I think I can speak for everyone that we learned a lot about Isabela, Sierra Negra, and our tolerance for ghost stories today.

10 best under-the-radar NBA acquisitions
Sure, it’s fun to observe how superstar talent adjusts to a new habitat — Chris Paul finding his wings in Houston, Jimmy Butler howling at the moon in Minnesota, and Kyrie Irving projecting Force ghosts in Boston. But often times, the more rewarding exercise is pinpointing the summer acquisitions who have given their new teams the best bang for their buck in spite of little fanfare and infrequent appearances on World Wide Wob’s Twitter feed. Here are 10 players who have best exemplified that latter category so far this year.
*Stats courtesy of Basketball Reference and NBA.com*
Victor Oladipo, SG, Indiana Pacers
If you love somebody, set them free from Russell Westbrook. That’s exactly what Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti did this offseason in dealing Oladipo to the Indiana Pacers as part of the Paul George trade, and the fifth-year guard has been on a killing spree ever since. Oladipo’s 24-5-4 averages this season are close to Miami Heat-era Dwyane Wade-type production out of the 2 spot. His 42.5 percent shooting from deep is a wonder of the modern world. Oladipo has become Indiana’s starter, finisher, and Messiah all wrapped up in one. An All-Star nod this February is probably a realistic expectation, which is saying something considering how much Indiana was questioned when they made the trade.
Enes Kanter, C, New York Knicks
While we’re on the topic of Oklahoma City refugees, here is another one who is having himself a nice little season. In between becoming The Empire State’s most beloved enforcer, Kanter is producing career-highs in rebounds (10.1) and assists per game (1.7) while also bumping up his shooting efficiency to a DeAndre Jordan-esque 60.2 percent. His defense isn’t just Shaqtin’ A Fool fodder anymore either, as Kanter is finally in positive territory in defensive box score plus-minus for the first time in seven NBA seasons. A fitting blue-collar bopper alongside the unicorn superstardom of Kristaps Porzingis in the Knicks frontcourt, Kanter is the sidekick that America needs right now.
Kris Dunn, PG, Chicago Bulls
[barely audible whisper as eyes dart from left-to-right] “The Bulls have the longest active winning streak in the league.” Indeed, the Bulls are winners of five straight, and none of it would have been possible without Dunn going berserk for them lately. Since supplanting Jerian Grant in the starting lineup, Dunn is averaging a cool 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. He has become the lifeblood of Chicago’s offense, both as a scorer and as a distributor, and he’s playing with a tenacity and a confidence that is rare to see from a second-year point guard. Not too shabby for a guy who was originally seen as a throw-in to the trade that sent Jimmy Butler to Minnesota.
Taj Gibson, PF/C, Minnesota Timberwolves
Undersized big men who play below the rim and conduct the majority of their business from the midrange won’t exactly win the adoration of Twitter or have 12-year-olds buying their jerseys in bulk. But box-score junkies can certainly appreciate Gibson’s impact for the fourth-best-in-the-West Timberwolves. His willingness to do the dirty work — setting screens, catching bodies on the offensive glass, protecting the rim — has made him a better partner for Karl-Anthony Towns than Gorgui Dieng ever was. Gibson’s familiarity with coach Tom Thibodeau from their Chicago days helps too, as the veteran is making 11 and 8 a night with good percentages and stellar defense fashionable again.
Aron Baynes, C, Boston Celtics
How did the Celtics go from 27th in rebounding last season to a top-ten team on the boards this season? Look no further than Australia’s favorite man bun. The seven-foot Baynes has started 21 of 32 games for the Eastern Conference-leading C’s and has responded by posting 10.3 rebounds per 36 minutes as well as the best individual defensive rating of any rotation player on the team. He is a brawny body who deters opposing ball-handlers from venturing into the painted area, and he averages a tremendous 1.15 points per possession on rolls to the rim to boot. And if you still need some convincing as to how big Baynes has been for Boston since his arrival, just ask Tommy Heinsohn.
PJ Tucker, SG/SF, Houston Rockets
This spot could have easily gone to fellow shape-shifting 3-and-especially-D forward Luc Mbah a Moute. But Mbah a Moute is currently sidelined with a bum shoulder, leaving Tucker to hold down the fort for Houston’s supporting cast. He’s definitely game though — the Rockets often ask Tucker to toggle between defending quite literally all five positions, and his ability to do so successfully has unlocked some seriously destructive lineup combinations with length and shooting all over the floor. Tucker fills in all of the blanks for Houston (some cases in point being his 37.1 three-point percentage and his 5.9 rebounds per game as a reserve), and it’s hard to imagine them owning the NBA’s best record (a white-hot 24-4) without his all-purpose contributions.
Lou Williams, PG/SG, LA Clippers
Sweet Lou has been at his sweetest this season on a Clippers team in desperate need of a sugar kick. He may be the only surviving guard left on the roster, but the former Sixth Man of the Year is earning all his minutes on his new squad. Williams is about to scale the 20 PPG Mountain for the first time in his career and is also enjoying personal bests in three-point efficiency (39.1 percent) and assists (4.9 per game). Whether you need a 40-point eruption or a timely three-shot foul in crunchtime, Williams finna deliver as he helps the Clips move past the Lob City era of old and towards the Lou City era of new.
Tyreke Evans, SG/SF, Memphis Grizzlies
Tyreke is quickly skyrocketing past Mike and Chris in the Evans power rankings. A forgotten man who couldn’t get anything more than a one-year, $3.29 million deal this summer, the former Rookie of the Year has put his “damaged goods” reputation to rest for good in Memphis. 19/5/4 in barely 30 minutes a contest will do that for you, as Evans has been looking like the illegitimate love child of Damian Lillard and Lance Stephenson this season. No matter if he is electroshocking the Grizzlies’ second unit to life or running with the starters and dropping off picture-perfect dimes to Marc Gasol down low, ‘Reke is gonna wreck, and there’s nothing that you can do about it.
Zach Randolph, PF/C, Sacramento Kings
At 36 years old and in his 17th NBA season, Randolph should be looking like Old Man Winter right now, especially on a young rebuilding team like the Kings. Instead, he continues to punk fools on the block like it’s 2004. Z-Bo has been the one constant in a chaotic Kings frontcourt rotation this season, and you can pencil him in for 14 points and 7 rebounds a night and forget about it. Three-and-a-half-inch vertical leap aside, the veteran Randolph for $12 million a year is one of the best bargains you will find in the league today. The full-body bruises he continues to inflict on opponents are a testament to that.
Thabo Sefolosha, SF/PF, Utah Jazz
A role player on his third team in five seasons may not quite fit the mold of an instant difference-maker. But Sefolosha has been a quality piece on a Jazz side still struggling to make up for Gordon Hayward’s production on the wing. The Swissman owns sparkling 52/43/81 shooting splits and is asserting himself as arguably Utah’s best one-on-one stopper despite being a 33-year-old on an elite defensive team. Sure, 7.9 points per game (actually a career-high for him) in nightly 20-minute cameos won’t be much of a hit with the ladies. But Thabo has the plus-minus nerds on his side, and isn’t that all you really need?

Why do I like Science-Fiction?
Strangely, as far as I can think of, I always did. I do recall enjoying cartoons and movies on flying saucer of the early ’70s. But I think my fascination for science fiction in the early ’80s.
I remember that everything seemed to have hit me at once! On TV, cartoon show like Goldorak (UFO Robot Grendizer), Albator (Captain Harlock) and Capitaine Flam (Captain Future) were sweeping me off my feet. In theatre, movies like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica were taking my breath away. However, the real shock would come between 1982 and 1985.
At the time, I was reading mostly bandes-dessiné (graphic novels) and science fiction was just another genre part of the selection. Back then, I was not making the difference between adventure, thriller and sci-fi. Then came the school’s assignment: each one of us in the classroom, had to pick up a novel and read it. Then we’d have to make a 2–3 page résumé of what we have read.
Not knowing what to choose, I went to the library and picked up “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by Jules Verne. I kind of enjoyed it. Since it was my first novel, it made me curious and I started to read more. Of course, since I did not make the difference or favoured any particular genre, I read everything I could find; mostly “Bob Morane” by Henri Verne. This series of books contained many genres (adventure, spying, crime, etc.) but I did enjoy the science fiction better. Les tours de cristale (the crystal’s towers), La zone “Z” (The zone “Z”), Le chevalier noir (the black knight) were among my favourite stories.
It is at that point in my life that I got hit by two separated events. The first was my introduction to the Terran Trade Authority (TTA) books by Stewart Cowley; and the second was a gift I received: my first novels on Perry Rhodan—a French translated German science-fiction series.
Starting with Les Vaisseaux Spaciaux de 2000 à 2100 (Spacecraft 2000–2100 AD) and with the 3 other books (Great Space Battles, SpaceWreck: Ghost Ships and Derelicts of Space and Starliners: Commercial Travel in 2200 AD), then followed by the Galactic Encounters series; I was blown away! Those books described, via short stories, he challenges and tribulation of mankind as the journey on the galactic scene. Each story was enhanced by illustrations and painting from the best artist of the late 70’s and 80’s … mostly those from Peter Elson.
Even today, I can say with confidence that no other works fired my imagination the way the art of Peter Elson (1947–1998) did. His work is still unparalleled to me. In my opinion, he is an unavoidable contributor of the genre. (Check is official page: http://www.peterelson.co.uk/)
Perry Rhodan was something else. The brain child of two German writers: K. H. Scheer and Clark Darlton (a.k.a. Walter Ernsting) started in 1961 with the heroes first landing on the moon, and still going on today! This series is the epitome of the Space Opera genre. A mosaic that spanned time and space going from the beginning of time and going to the farthest galaxies at the end of the universe.
Those two series were what got me hooked. And from Perry Rhodan, I drifted over the Anticipation Collection (by les Éditions Fleuve Noire). At the time, up to the late ’90s at least, Anticipation was the main if not the only source of French Science-Fiction. Not just French translated books and stories but actual French-speaking writers.
From Anticipation, I discovered writers like P.-J. Hérault; G.-J. Arnaud; Pierre Barbet; Robert Clauzel; M.-A. Rayjean; Frank Dartal; Dan Dastier; Jan de Fast; J.-P. Garen; Laurent Genefort; Maurice Limat. All of them gave me some interesting perspective by their visions along with some other writers (like Jimmy Guieu) from other francophone publishing houses.
Of the “CLASSIC,” I read only a few. For some reasons, I was never attracted to the mainstream or currents. I did jump into the bandwagon more than a few times (like Battletech and Warhammer 40,000), but for the most part, I always enjoyed stories by writers that were mostly unknown or less known.
As of the main question of why I like Science-Fiction in general? Well, at first, it was a very cheap way of travelling. I spent my youth in a very small town on the edge of civilization, surrounded by an endless forest to the north and the sea to the south. To that, you include long winters and some very short summer, which lead to a life strongly influenced by the weather and season changes. Add to that a kid who’s very curious of what was “out there” beyond the horizon … and let’s not forget that, at the time, television had only 4 channels available to us (3 French and 1 English). Cable TV was a luxury and the technologies (I.E. the cable) would not be available in our area until the very late 80’s and early 90’s.
With this taken into considerations, Science-Fiction, was to me, a ticket first class for adventures and evasion … a means to travel far and away in order to discover some fantastic landscapes and new countryside.
That was then! Mind you, it is still the case in some ways, but now, I discovered that I like a style of science fiction that makes me “think.” The genre that will open my mind to possibilities or force me to reconsider my position, conception or values. That’s why I am quite enjoying stories about alien civilization, galactic empires and stories that can span decades, centuries or even millennia… Stories on how technologies will affect a culture or civilizations, who in turn will affect its surroundings and environment, which in turn will affect the use of it very technology, and so on…
Incidentally, I also recently discovered I liked a subgenre of science fiction: the SF cop’s stories—a combination of two of my favourite subjects: Crime solving stories with science fiction … a fascinating subject as both law enforcements and organized crimes are racing to discover new ways for applied technologies, to further up their own goals. A very interesting topic.
Now that I explained to you why I like Science-Fiction, let’s hope I’ll be able to impress you with some of my crazy ideas...
Enjoy!

Nowy artykuł na Dzika Banda :
Nowy artykuł na http://www.dzikabanda.pl/wieksze-kawalki/rankingi/swiat-krotkiego-metrazu-cz-8-najlepsze-shorty-cyberpunkowe
Świat krótkiego metrażu cz. 8 - najlepsze shorty cyberpunkowe
Do kin wchodzi „Ghost in the Shell” ze Scarlett Johansson w roli głównej, czyli wysokobudżetowa adaptacja jednego z najważniejszych filmów cyberpunkowych. Z tej okazji przyglądamy się cyberpunkowym krótkometrażówkom, które zrobiły na nas największe wrażenie.
Rise
Doskonała pod każdym względem krótkometrażówka z doborową obsadą (Anton Yelchin, Rufus Sewell) i intrygującym (choć doskonale znanym z SF) pomysłem. David Karlak ładnie gra na emocjach, odwracając role ofiary i ciemiężcy, a przy tym czerpie z wizualnego dorobku “Ghost in the Shell”czy “Dystryktu 9”. W marcu tego roku ogłoszono start produkcji pełnometrażowej adaptacji “Rise”.
Tears of steel
Ian Hubert wraz z ekipą otrzymał dofinansowanie z Holenderskiego Instytutu Filmowego i stworzył emocjonujący i wizualnie dopracowany film o naukowcach desperacko próbujących wyzwolić świat od maszyn. Świetne są efekty specjalne, design robotów i fabuła na poziomie konceptualnym. Warto obejrzeć.
Sight
Co by było gdyby Google Glass weszły do dystrybucji i stały się niezastąpioną częścią dnia codziennego? Eran May-Raz i Daniel Lazo w interesujący sposób pokazują możliwości (gamifikacja najprostszych czynności) i ryzyko (w finale) jakie niesie ze sobą rozszerzona rzeczywistość. SHort ładnie skręcony i dopracowany pod względem wizualnym.
Archetype
Świetnie zrealizowany film Aarona Simsa nawiązuje lekko do “Robocopa”. Choć to zupełnie inny setting, to jednak ma kilka wspólnych cech, m.in. pakowanie zwłok w blaszane puszki. Wrażenie robią efekty specjalne i design wielkiego mecha bojowego. Fox wykupił prawa do pełnometrażówki i jeśli faktycznie ona powstanie może to być ciekawy kawałek cyberpunku.
Ruin
Bardzo ładny wizualnie, animowany short Wesa balla zachwyca przede wszystkim scenami motocyklowego pościgu, rozgrywającymi się dystopijnych, postcyberpunkowych realiach. Prawa do pełnometrażowej adaptacji wykupiło studio Fox.
True Skin
Krótkometrażówka rozgrywająca się w futurystycznym Bangkoku, w świecie gdzie wszczepy, rozszerzona rzeczywistość i dyskryminacja ludzi nieposiadających implantów to codzienność. Film tajlandczyka, Stephana Zlotescu, to interesująca prezentacja niedalekiej i możliwej do ziszczenia wersji przyszłości. Prawa do pełnometrażowej ekranizacji wykupił w 2012 r. Warner Bros., ale od tego czasu nic nie dzieje się w tym temacie.
Memorize
Szwedzi, Eric Ramberg i Jimmy Eriksson, wykorzystali w efektowny sposób pomysł z “Dziwnych dni” Kathryn Bigelow i trzeciego odcinka “Czarnego lustra”, pt. “The Entire History of You” Charlie Brookera. To widowiskowa strzelanka z niezłym FX, policją w stylu “Dredda” i słodko-gorzkim przesłaniem nt. technologii.
Rosa
Całość zajęła mu rok pracy (to o dwa lata mniej niż “Katedra” Bagińskiemu) i czuć w niej ducha “Matrixa” i “Battle Angel Alita”. Ponoć 20th Century Fox zakupiło prawa do pełnometrażowej ekranizacji.
From the Future with Love
The Sentient
Gabriel Scott zaserwował mały miks “Pamięci absolutnej”, “Raportu Mniejszości” i “Ghost in the Shell” w interesującym futurystycznym settingu. Mnóstwo akcji, niezły montaż i twarda uciekinierka potrafiąca skopać tyłki twardym gliniarzom.
Azureus Rising
Mech: Human Trials
Reżyser Patrick Kalyn stworzył krótką wariację na “Tetsuo: The Iron Man”. W jego świecie przyszłości istnieje narkotyk przyspieszający regenerację, którego efektem ubocznym jest mechanizacja ciała. Prosta narracja i fabuła, ale całkiem przyjemne efekty specjalne.
The Gift
Ponoć Fox i Warner Bros. walczą o prawa do pełnometrażowej adaptacji.
GitS 2501
Project 2501 to filmowy hołd dla “Ghost in the Shell” Mamoru Oshiiego, który w wersji aktorskiej odtwarza początkową scenę z anime. W zespole twórców znalazł się Maciej Kuciara, który współtworzył również concept arty do filmowej adaptacji ze Scarlett Johansson, oraz polskie Studio Juice.
