Backstory (before Hell)

Missy was born in 1895 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as (Marcel) Misty Landry to an alcoholic father and mother who would die shortly after childbirth. She grew up being raised by her father to be like him and work within the agricultural realm of work-- Much to her dismay.

From a young age and when radios were popularized, beginning to pop up in houses across the states, Missy was enthralled with the music and talking people from within the box. Music inspired her from a young age to go against the grain and figure out who she was- not who her father 'needed' her to be.

In high school, she began to understand that she was a woman. The revelation was jarring, and a secret she kept close. Many things were not accepted where she grew up, and being different wasn't one.

Her father, while unaware of her newfound identity, did anything but respect his child. Noticing whenever Missy had begun practicing singing and dance instead of her household chores, only to ridicule her for being a pansy and some much worse insults. When he drank, he'd somehow be nicer- and weaker. Something Missy would take advantage of when committing patricide for her first homicide after enduring his mistreatment her entire life up to said point. It wasn't done out of anger, or heat of the moment- no. It was planned, calculated, and thought over for weeks before she took the opportunity to escape from beneath his thumb. The taste of his blood was not one she'd ever forget. As bitter and horrid as it was, the satisfaction it brought her was more than enough.

Missy had been closeted the majority of her life until her father 'passed away' when she was 21. She inherited his debt and responsibilities as the "man of the house" and the last of her family line. Rather than pick up the mantle, live in the closet for the rest of her days, and die unhappy- She moved several towns over to New Orleans and began to present more femininely whenever she could, calling herself Misty when she did so that anytime she did have to present as her legal/birth identity there'd be little to no association. Essentially living a double life. As Marcel, she would work as a men's tailor, and as Misty, she'd sing from bar to bar. That is until she found one bar that regularly asked her to return.

It was at this particular speakeasy that Missy would first meet Mimzy, another performer at the bar. The two became quick friends, and truthfully Mimzy was Missy's first 'girl friend.' (non-romantic) Mimzy was the first person in life to learn of Missy's gender identity, and surprisingly the first person to accept her for who she was. Mimzy helped inspire Missy to go on as herself, giving her confidence and helping her find her own voice.

It was around this time that Missy would first hear Alastor's radio broadcasts. By total chance, flipping through stations as she sat in her kitchen preparing a pot of tea, his voice poured through the speakers and ignited her interest. She quickly began to tune into all of his broadcasts, even adjusting her schedule to ensure she didn't miss any time he was on air. To put it frankly, she became somewhat of a near-obsessive 'fangirl' if anything even without knowing the man behind the charismatic voice and fake mid-Atlantic accent.

What Missy was unaware of though, was that soon after she began listening to him- Alastor would soon see her sing at the bar after one of Mimzy's stellar performances. And while he was nowhere near as intrigued by her as she was by him, he did soon ask Mimzy about her little friend. Mimzy, being the great friend she was, was eager to introduce the two- seeing as she knew just how much Missy was obsessed with Al's radio show. Missy easily hid how she instantly recognized his voice, greeting him politely like he was any other customer. And yet, he asked her to dance in between her stage times.

After that night, Missy continued to make her efforts to listen to each of his broadcasts. And now knowing who he was behind the radio, she may have begun to take extra steps to see him more often. At the same time, Alastor seemingly dropped by the speakeasy Missy performed at more often. Several weeks of the two getting to know one another, and watching one another from afar in their own ways passed before Alastor asked Missy if she would be interested in officially starting a courtship. It was this conversation that led to Alastor learning of her gender identity, and much to her surprise, he didn't care.

The two would begin a relationship that to half of the public, looked like just two friends, but to the circle of folk who frequented the speakeasy- everyone knew the two as the happy couple they had become. Of course, there were still men who'd come and get belligerently drunk, throwing themselves at Missy or Mimzy- and most of them ended up Missy's victims.

It wasn't until Missy and Alastor moved in with one another that they learned of each other's homicidal tendencies as it grew more difficult to hide. Instead of rocking the boat, this revelation strengthened their bond because each of them had a similar yet odd moral code regarding their victims. Soon, emotionally tied the knot despite the laws surrounding marriage. Having a small, private ceremony over a victim with a ring exchange.

After many years in a near-perfect romantic partnership, in 1933, their lives were taken. Side by side while hiding a body and shot by a hunter in the distance while discarding of extra remains of a shared victim.

After Death (In Hell) (still b4 pilot)

(missy's backstory in hell is too difficult to pinpoint years and dates like a lot of my other ocs... so no timeline this time!)

Alastor and Missy appeared in Hell together, and nearly instantaneously her beloved made a deal of which the details could never be shared with her. The contract gave Alastor his eldrich powers and allowed him to quickly rise to the power level of an overlord. Missy, on the other hand, struggled with her new form and powers. Feeling her control and strength wane depending on the amount of love she felt and received- on top of growing stronger by taking down current overlords. It didn't worry her, though. Knowing and believing as long as she was side by side with Alastor, all would be fine.

Eventually, as Alastor grew into his true role as the Radio Demon, an overlord in his own right, Missy had become the overlord of Obsession- and love, by her own claims. The two had a strained, complicated, and sad relationship with Vox during this period, which would eventually end dramatically. The main true 'friend' the couple shared in Hell that shared in their desire for power and rank was Rosie, the Cannibalism Overlord. She understood Missy better than anyone else in Hell, besides her beloved.

After decades together in Hell, Missy awoke one day with no sign of her beloved. No note, nothing to give her a sign he'd gone or would return. And her powers seemed to wane from the realization alone. An overwhelming panic set into her, rushing out into the streets of Pentagram City in a desperate search for him. Her search ended with no clues, and she returned empty-handed- all alone for the first time in decades.

She managed as well as she could on her own, although the other Overlords began to notice the shift in power and Alastor's absence. Putting a target on her back, and sending her into hiding.

After a year into Alastor's disappearance, Vox found the sinner. Grinning madly, he offered an outstretched hand, and deal to assist her. For her soul, he'd grant her greater powers, a job as an actress or star of the stage to attain fans and achieve a dream she didn't realize she had. Of course, Missy was fully aware Vox was likely doing this for two main reasons and neither were to help her. The little rabbit demon knew Vox likely only wished to hold something over Alastor's head if he ever returned and to have another soul to own. She hesitated to accept, but he ensured her she'd have a place to live- safe from other overlords and even the exterminations. She'd have been dumb to refuse, after all, if Alastor had the right to make a deal with some unknown being, why couldn't she make one with Vox?

Subsequently, Missy moved into a room at the VoxTek Tower to get to and from the filming sets more easily. Quickly falling into her new role as a star actress in film and stage, as if she was always meant for this. Nearly every motion picture or musical featuring the Overlord of Obsession was a hit, resulting in her fame and fans growing. As this occurred, Vox's behavior towards her became more familiar. Even teaching her more about technology, since she'd avoided much new tech due to her husband's distaste for it all. Surprisingly, she was quite skilled with graphic design, learned how to code, and became Vox's main assistant in case things went awry with him.

Velvette and Valentino noticed the way Vox seemed to favor her and kept her close. Resulting in some teasing, but mostly leading Velvette and Missy to become friends. Velvette enjoyed teaching the older woman about modern slang, technology, and social media she didn't understand. Thinking it hilarious how she mispronounced what was common internet lingo for the social media overlord. Valentino on the other hand, tried to push Missy into trying out a different kind of acting- one she was not comfortable with in the slightest. The rabbit demon and moth had quite a frustrating dynamic, Missy making fun of him and shooting both him and his requests down, only for Valentino to complain to Vox that his 'pet' was being mean.

All in all, despite their vast differences, Missy ended up getting along quite well with the V's. Growing particularly close to Vox and Velvette, even if she felt in the back of her mind a gnawing concern for what Alastor would say if he saw her now.

Daisy Alice Jane Spencer-Churchill was born on July 4, 1885, as the only child of John Spencer-Churchill, a prominent importer of fine goods, and Margaret Spencer-Churchill, a renowned socialite. Growing up in an opulent household, Daisy enjoyed a privileged upbringing, never wanting for anything. Her father doted on her, while she inherited her mother's striking beauty, often drawing admiration from all who met her.

The Spencer-Churchill family was both affluent and well-connected, and Daisy’s early life was marked by luxury and tranquility. Her parents meticulously arranged her future, approving of her courtship with David Randolph, a man who matched their high social standing. The two married in an extravagant ceremony on May 3, 1905, a wedding that became the talk of the town.

Daisy’s life seemed picture-perfect, reflecting everything one could dream of in high society. Ten years into their marriage, Daisy and David welcomed their first child, Mary Francine Randolph, on December 10, 1915, followed by a son, Gregory David Randolph, on September 23, 1918. With her beautiful family and privileged status, Daisy's life seemed flawless.

However, as the 1920s began, the world around Daisy started to change in ways she could never have anticipated…

1920’s

Daisy had no idea that while she spent most of her time as a debutante in New York City, her husband, David, was struggling with serious financial troubles. He managed to keep up appearances, maintaining the facade of their wealth to outsiders, but Daisy soon noticed that something was amiss. Her jewelry, once proudly displayed in her dressing room, began to disappear. Initially, Daisy suspected the housekeepers and, in her frustration, dismissed them. However, when the thefts continued even after they were gone, her suspicion grew.

Determined to uncover the truth, Daisy devised a plan. On the eve of their wedding anniversary, she made a show of placing an expensive necklace she had bought herself in plain sight. Then, she hid in her closet, waiting. Hours passed before David entered the room, unaware of her presence. Daisy watched in shock as her husband carefully pocketed the necklace.

Confronting David later that night, Daisy demanded to know where her necklace was, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and betrayal. The confrontation escalated quickly, and for the first time in their marriage, David struck her. It wasn’t the last. Whenever Daisy questioned him or stepped "out of line" by his standards, she would find herself on the receiving end of his violent temper, enduring bruises on her arms and face. 1945

After her transformation, Daisy chose to reinvent herself entirely, adopting the name Vivienne Beaufort. On December 25, 1922, Daisy Randolph was officially reported missing, leaving behind her old life and the torment she had endured. Vivienne kept a close eye on the investigation as Lucinda guided her through the nuances of her new existence—teaching her to control her thirst and the art of hunting without being detected.

The police investigation led nowhere, much to Vivienne’s relief. Despite his cruelty, David appeared genuinely distressed by her disappearance, a reaction that surprised her. However, her only true regret was being unable to be near her children. From a distance, she watched them grow, cherishing their milestones and silently celebrating their successes. Over the next two decades, from her disappearance until 1945, Vivienne found solace in her blossoming love for Lucinda and began meticulously planning David's demise.

Vivienne decided that David's birthday would be the perfect time for her revenge—a poetic end for a man who had caused her so much pain. David had always made a spectacle of his birthday, reveling in the attention and making sure everyone knew it was his favorite day of the year. He had ruined her birthdays during the last years of their marriage, so it felt fitting to repay him on the day he cherished most.

She waited patiently, ensuring that David remained alone. He never remarried, a situation Vivienne carefully orchestrated. Whenever he showed interest in another woman, Vivienne would discreetly intervene, whispering warnings about his past: “His first wife disappeared without a trace. Isn’t that strange?” Her efforts ensured that no one got too close, and David lived in a lonely, self-imposed exile, especially as their children grew up and started families of their own.

Despite its charm, they found the town's strict rules on hunting humans too restrictive, so they treated Raven’s Peak as a vacation spot, returning now and then but never staying for long. Instead, they made their main residence in New York, allowing Vi to keep a close eye on her children from a distance.

As the years passed, Vi watched Mary and Gregory grow older, surrounded by their own children and grandchildren. Mary was now in her late fifties, and Gregory in his mid-fifties, both thriving in their respective lives. Though it saddened Vi that her children hadn’t truly known her before she disappeared, she found comfort in seeing them build happy families of their own.

Financially secure from clever investments made in the 1920s, Vi and Lucinda enjoyed a life of luxury, their wealth drawing the attention of various con artists over the years. One such con artist was Maia Kelly, who successfully deceived Vi with her elaborate schemes. Naive and trusting by nature, Vi believed every word Maia said until her team uncovered the truth to Vi. Feeling betrayed and furious that someone had dared to trick her, Vi wanted to teach Maia a lesson, despite Lucinda's advice to let it go.

Ignoring Lucinda’s warnings, Vi confronted Maia, determined to make her pay. In a fit of rage, she attacked Maia, intending to kill her. However, as Vi tried to finish the job, Maia's team intervened, going to claim self defense after getting Maia killed. They attempted to shoot Vi, not realizing she was a vampire. Forced to defend herself, Vi killed them all. Frustrated and disillusioned, she wondered if there was any loyalty left in the world.

What Vi didn’t realize, however, was that in her rage, she hadn’t actually killed Maia but had unintentionally created another vampire. It would take another fifteen years before Vi discovered the unintended consequences of her actions.

1982

Lucinda and Vi's luck eventually ran out in 1980. They were captured by a group of hunters who, rather than kill them outright, subjected them to two years of relentless torture. Vi endured the pain alongside Lucinda, desperately clinging to hope. But when the hunters finally decided to kill Lucinda, something inside Vi snapped. Fueled by a fierce rage and grief, she found the strength to fight back. The hunters, complacent in their belief that Vi was weak and broken, were unprepared for her sudden burst of strength. She swiftly overpowered them, killing each one with brutal efficiency.

With the hunters dead, Vi was left alone to mourn the loss of her mate. She gathered Lucinda's ashes, placing them in a jar to carry with her. Disoriented and weakened, Vi found herself stranded by the side of an unfamiliar road. She needed to find food and get far away from the scene, but she had no idea where she was.

Desperate and unsure of what else to do, Vi decided to hitchhike in the middle of the night, hoping to find someone willing to give her a ride. She stuck out her thumb as a van approached, and to her relief, it slowed to a stop. The driver, a young man with a friendly smile, introduced himself as Jason. Instantly, Vi felt a connection; Jason reminded her so much of her son Gregory.

Determined to control her bloodlust, especially after subsisting on nothing but rat blood during her captivity, Vi tried to focus on anything other than the rhythmic sound of the heartbeats around her. But hunger gnawed at her, and the temptation grew unbearable. Just as she was about to ask Jason to pull over so she could leave, her instincts took over. Before she could stop herself, Vi lunged at Jason, sinking her teeth into his neck.

The van swerved and crashed, but Vi couldn’t stop. Overwhelmed by hunger and the adrenaline coursing through her veins, she moved from one passenger to the next, draining them until she was sated. When the frenzy ended, and the reality of what she had done set in, Vi realized she made a mistake. Knowing she couldn’t explain the carnage she had caused, she fled the scene, leaving the wreckage and bodies behind.

Present Day

Vivienne eventually returned to New York, but the city felt empty without Lucinda by her side. Vi continued to watch her children age, knowing that soon, she would have to say goodbye to them forever. The thought of witnessing either of them pass away was more than she could bear. Although she hadn’t spoken a word to them since her disappearance in 1922, her love for them had never faded. In 1993, Vi decided it was time to leave New York behind and has never returned since.

Over the next few decades, she traveled from state to state, experiencing things she never could have imagined as a young socialite in the early 1900s. She learned about computers, developed an interest in aviation, and even tried her hand at rock climbing. Though she enjoyed her independence, she was careful not to get too close to anyone, wary of forming attachments that could lead to heartache. Despite not getting too close to anyone, Vivienne was never alone. She went to too many parties and met all sorts of people, but no one really knew who Vivienne Beaufort was and she liked it that way.

One night in 2012, while staying in Louisiana, Vi stumbled upon another vampire. That encounter would change her life in ways she hadn’t expected. She met Victor Morgraves, a vampire who was not only strikingly handsome and intelligent but also had the kindest eyes she had ever seen. Vivienne felt an instant connection with him, something she hadn’t felt in years. One thing led to another, and before she knew it, she found herself in Victor’s bed. Realizing how vulnerable she felt, Vi panicked and fled in the middle of the night, pushing thoughts of Victor and the emotions he stirred deep within her, somewhere she hoped they would stay buried.

Now, twelve years later, Vi has decided to settle in Raven’s Peak. Despite the town's strict rules on hunting humans, she believes it might be the best place for her to lay low for a while. With the memories of her past haunting her less and less, she is ready to find some semblance of peace, even if it means abiding by rules she doesn't fully agree with.

gwen, from the very beginning, has always been on the side of the order. she wasn’t told about the order explicitly while growing up but she learned more as she got older. by the time she got to hogwarts gwen was fully aware of what the order was and knew to keep it secret. her mother kept her safe from the wars as best as she could, but she joined the order the summer before her seventh year and dumbledore’s army immediately after it was formed. her stance has not changed and never will, no matter how much she’s been through.

where have they been living for the past year:

gwen still loves on the isle of skye, in the small druidic community her mother raised her in. the community has been so isolated from other parts of the magical community that it’s completely safe for her to live in.

marlene mckinnon spent most of her seventh year very secretly pregnant, only revealing it to a few friends while still in school. the moment she graduated she was able to admit why she was so weird the last few months of school. on july 21st she gave birth to gwen dearborn, her first and only child. she wasn’t in love with caradoc dearborn. in fact he was just a short fling. nevertheless he ended up being one of the most important people in her life. despite how young they both were, caradoc was thrilled to be a father. they moved in together, figuring it would be a lot easier to be parents under the same roof.

as time went on marlene formed a relationship with dorcas meadowes, one of her older sister’s best friends. caradoc had his own relationship and they decided it was better for him to move out and for dorcas to move in instead. the three of them coparented gwen together and she was happy. there was a war raging all around her, all three of her parents involved in it, but she didn’t know. they did their best to keep all of that secret from the young girl.

unfortunately war has a way of touching everyone. things happened slowly, then all at once. her father, caradoc, stopped coming around. she was too young to even ask where her father was, not even a year old when he disappeared. then came july 2003 and the mckinnon family dinner. dorcas couldn’t make it, having to work late on an order mission. gwen was down for a nap when all hell broke loose. she doesn’t remember any of it and mother rarely talks about it. she knows that everyone in her family was murdered that night, that her mother had to witness her own mother and her brothers and sisters all die. it was a miracle marlene got out in the first place.

her childhood was green. trees and bushes and flowers and vines grew all over the town she called home on the isle of skye. she lived in the forest with her mother, not too far from town. everyone called her mother moira and gwen just accepted that it must be some sort of nickname. by the time she was six or seven, old enough to be asking a lot of questions, marlene sat her down and explained things in the most basic way she could. they were hiding from very bad people and her mom had to use a fake name to keep them safe.

the only people she knew very well were the townsfolk and the weasleys. she became best friends with the twins from a young age, always happy to be pulling stupid pranks with them. she called molly and arthur her aunt and uncle. the weasleys became her family. they were the only people marlene trusted with her daughter.

by the time she got to school gwen knew virtually everything about how destructive the war was to her family. it stole her father, her stepmother, her uncle james, the entire mckinnon family. once in school she started to learn how it had destroyed vritually every other family she’d come into contact with. no one escaped the war her mother had protected her from.

gwen was sorted into gryffindor, something that only made her feel closer to the family that had been stolen from her. most of them had been in that house over hundreds of years. it was a little thing that made her feel like she belonged no matter what. and within gryffindor house she found more friends that became her own sort of family.

being at school was her favourite thing until her third year. harry potter showed up that year, a kid she knew but had never met. her mother told her about him, her cousin’s kid she could do nothing to help. instead of telling him who she was, gwen pulled away, not able to justify being close to him. it only made things harder when he became best friends with ron. he was always around after that and she couldnt avoid him the way she wanted to. with each new year came new things getting worse and worse. the chamber of secrets opened in her fourth year and the girl she saw as a little sister got manipulated by the dark lord. in her fifth year sirius black showed up and her favourite teacher was actually her mom’s ex, the one she always talked about. in sixth year came the triwizard tournament.

her seventh year, and the summer before, became the most eventful year of her life. marlene decided it was finally time to come out of hiding. so, with a few words to molly, she was invited to 12 grimmauld place for an order meeting. she reunited with her old friends and gwen had to have an awkward talk with her little cousin. once her seventh year officially started gwen knew she had to do something. being in the order now was great, but action had to be taken. once harry formed dumbledore’s army she joined immediately, happy to help in whatever way she could.

after graduating gwen took on an apprenticeship with a small herbology school in scotland, working to hone the skill she was best with. she began growing very dangerous plants for potions for the order, and given her unqiue abilities it came naturally to her. she dedicated herself to the order and to fighting. during the battle of hogwarts she was taken by surprise, resulting in her mother sacrificing herself life to save her. since then gwen has been busy doing everything possible to make her mother proud.

Pride Month — LGBTQ+ History: Argentina

Among some populations of pre-Columbian America same gender attraction and different expressions of gender were common and occurred without sanction, which horrified Spanish colonizers and called that a sin. Mapuche culture valued men and women equally. Assuming identities or having transsexual or intersex characteristics did not mean the loss of any privilege, power or status.The Mapuche did not have notions of gender and sex, at least not with the relevance of the conquerors. There was the concept of weye, which referred to people who were not considered neither men nor women, and moved in a complex way between different states that combined performative, sexual, age and time of day characteristics. There is also the role of machi, a position that meets the conditions of doctor, priest, counselor and protector of the people, which is why it is common to find transgender women performing as machis. The Guaraní culture also had a certain degree of acceptance towards people who had sexual relations with people of the same sex. Sexual relations between men among the Guaicurúes of the Gran Chaco were normal and the word "cudinho" exists to refer to a type of men who dressed like women, married men, urinated bending over and had menstrual symptoms. The Inca culture influenced the Argentine northwest and valued sexuality between men and the use of clothing corresponding to another gender as sacred and religious. Sex between women was common and valued, especially in the upper class. In the Yungas areas, there were several matriarchal societies, which also considered sexual relations between people of the same sex and the use of clothing corresponding to another gender to be sacred. All that was repressed with the arrival of the Europeans conquerors and in particular due to religion reasons. Gender non conforming people were persecuted and killed. Sex between people of the same gender was cataloged as evidence of how "savage" indigenous people were.

One of the few public lesbian figures in the 1900s was Pepita Avellaneda, who was also the first tango singer to dress as a man. Lesbian relationships were widespread among young pupils in educational boarding schools. There are records of trans women existing at the time, as well as other people who diverged from gender and sex expectations but they were persecuted, instigated to commit suicide, lynched and terrorized in different ways.

Although Stonewall had an impact, in 1997 the LGBT march was moved for November. Apart from the cold temperatures of July, the change of date commemorates the founding, on November 1, 1967, of the Nuestro Mundo collective: the first dissident organization in Argentina and in Latin America. In Argentina the group Nuestro Mundo emerged in 1967 and was recognized as the first group of sexual diversity in the country and in Latin America. Nuestro Mundo invited, from its newsletters and fanzines, to homosexual liberation. This group was transformed in the 70s into the Homosexual Liberation Front (FLH), which under its political manifesto "Sex and Revolution", had Néstor Perlongher and Manuel Puig, as two of its main references. The FLH brought together gay and lesbian groups and organizations of various ideological persuasions, whose goal was to incorporate sexualities into the political debate. They edited the Somos magazine for six years, which reached eight publications. The last of them, from the underground, months before the beginning of the last civic-military dictatorship. Graphic publications constituted an important space for militancy, resistance and visibility. During the dictatorship periods in Argentina we did not have social expressions in relation to the LGBT movement because it was persecuted, exiled or disappeared (1976-1983).

With the return to democracy, magazines such as Cuadernos de Existencia Lesbiana proliferated, which sold out its only 50 copies on its first day of sale: on March 8, 1988, when a group of lesbians stormed the Plaza de los Dos Congresos under the slogan "Passionately lesbian", or the magazine Sodoma, edited by Grupo de Acción Gay, which only published two issues between 1984 and 1985. In 2003, Buenos Aires became the first Latin American city to legally recognize civil unions between "two people regardless of their sex or sexual orientation", by enacting Law No. 1004. The law was promoted by LGBT organizations. Article 765 of the Code of Military Justice that established the crime of homosexuality for the military was repealed in 2009. The Law of Marriage between Persons of the Same Sex was sanctioned in 2010 (Law of Equal Marriage), also recognizing the right to adopt children from the LGBT people. In 2012, the Gender Identity Law was enacted, recognizing the right to change gender, from childhood and by the simple self-perception of the person, with recognition of the right to free necessary medical treatment. All these are the result of the fights for human rights by LGBTQIA+ groups.

How does SKAM build a LI?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and even gave speeches to my long suffering friends about the topic. Now that we know what happened to Josh to make him the way he is, I feel like I can finally post about the way SKAM built love interest characters.

When it’s good, SKAM is a very tightly written show because every clip, and every storyline, advances the themes that make the main character vulnerable. I would call this their “shame” but DRUCK fans don’t like that term because the show is called “pressure” and not “shame”. In the end, whether a character’s issues are internal (”shame”) or external (”pressure”) is irrelevant to what I want to talk about, so let’s just call those themes a character’s vulnerability, shall we?

How does SKAM make every storyline relate to the themes of the season and what makes a character vulnerable? Well, one way it does that is to make the love interest the personification of a character’s fears and issues.

To wit: In season 1, Eva is called out on having no opinions of their own. If you read @skamenglishsubs‘ culture and context posts, they have listed every instance in which this theme is portrayed by having Eva follow someone else’s opinion (I recommend you do this, because there are way more instances than I picked up on!). So, who is Jonas? Jonas is an extremely opinionated person who feels he’s not a follower at all.

In season 2, Noora is afraid of opening herself to a boyfriend, both emotionally and sexually, because when she was 13 she had sex with a guy she thought she was in love with, who then dumped her as that was all he was interested in. Who is William? William is the school’s fuckboy who dumps girls after having sex with them, and doesn’t seem to care about the girls’ feelings, but rather is just interested in them advertising his sexual prowess via hoodies.

In season 3, Isak’s strained relationship with his mom makes him believe that it’s impossible to have a functional relationship with a person who has a mental illness, because they’re not in touch with reality. Even has bipolar disorder.

And then, in possibly one of the most simplistic ways to perceive one’s own character, in season 4, Sana is a hijabi out to prove she can do everything a ~normal Norwegian party girl~ can do. Yousef is... not a Muslim, lol. (Note that the Yousef storyline was not originally planned by Julie Andem, and in fact came about because of feedback she received from Muslim fans that they wanted Sana to have a LI. Sana’s main storyline isn’t so much about her religion, but rather her furious desire to prove the haters wrong.)

In general, most of the SKAM remakes have not tried to reinvent the wheel, and have more or less stuck to these character profiles in order to build their own seasons. Most of the changes remake stans will point to when they talk about a remake season don’t really qualify as changes (under this definition) because they don’t change the conflict between the main and the LI.

I was pretty interested in whether the remakes had picked up on this way to build a LI, and most particularly, how the remakes that have done original seasons built their LIs. Thoughts on these after the read more.

Out of all the seasons that remade SKAM’s four seasons, I would say there are only four that didn’t stick to the character profiles as outlined above. In my opinion, it’s these seasons:

Eva’s season in SKAM España changes this because Jorge is never set up as an opinionated person. He’s a good guy, for sure, a good friend to his friends like most Jonases, but you will never catch Jorge acting like his opinions are better than Eva’s. He never calls Eva out on not having opinions of her own. Their break up scene doesn’t deal with this, and most importantly, Eva could never get the upper hand in that last conversation like the other Evas have, because Jorge is the only Jonas to kiss Eva first.

Matteo’s season in DRUCK changes this because while Matteo is afraid that his mom won’t react well if he comes out to her, we have no idea what he thinks about having relationships with people with a mental illness, as a general rule. We don’t know because David doesn’t have a MI (that we know of). He is trans, and DRUCK wisely avoided making David’s gender identity the personification of Matteo’s issues (gvgvvh imagine how shit that would’ve been!!). Matteo and David’s major conflict is that Matteo has abandonment issues and David a tendency to peace out when things get hot.

Cris’ season in SKAM España changes this because Cris’ mom doesn’t have a mental illness. In fact, Cris doesn’t know much about MI in general. While Cris does have some internalized ableism, it comes from ignorance and buying into societal prejudices against MI, rather than personal experience. Cris’ vulnerability isn’t her ideas about MI. Her issue is that she has bought into the idea that she’s an unintelligent party girl who can’t ever be responsible or dependable.

Nora’s season in SKAM España both keeps and changes the conflicts as presented in SKAM. Nora fails to trust Alejandro because he’s a fuckboy who would have sex with girls and then mock them for getting their hopes up. But, unlike Noora, Nora’s issue is that her lack of trust in Alejandro throws her into the arms of the seemingly ideal boyfriend despite the red flags, whereas Noora’s lack of trust in William made her withhold sex.

As you can see, all Sana seasons so far (Amira N.’s included) have kept the original conflict by having a non Muslim Yousef. Under this definition, Martino’s season in SKAM Italia isn’t a subversion, because while he does live with his mom, he doesn’t think he can have a functional relationship with her. Aside from Eva Vázquez, all of the Evas kissed their Jonas first. However, I should note that while SKAM Austin kept the Eva/Jonas conflict, they’re the only other SKAM that doesn’t open with Jonas’ essay. (Which I chalk up to facebook not wanting their show to open with a blatantly anti-capitalist speech lmao.)

Now, how did the remakes with original seasons build their LIs?

Arthur’s season in SKAM France is an interesting example, because Baguettes picked up on the LI personifying the main’s vulnerability. If Arthur is vulnerable about his (lack of) hearing, Noée embraces it, takes pride on it and bases her identify around it. So far, this is exactly how SKAM/Julie Andem built her LIs. However, Arthur rejects Noée and mocks her language. Noée disappears after s5. Alexia has no hearing issues, or any disability.

Lola’s season in SKAM France similarly picks up on the concept. Since Lola is an addict, Maya’s father was one as well. However, this conflict isn’t really explored amidst the thousand other ideas that were thrown at the wall during this season. It’s fair to say Lola and Maya’s clips don’t develop the theme of addiction throughout the season. Unless you want to count Maya telling Lola that Lola is Maya’s addiction, I suppose.

Kato’s season in wtFOCK (oh yes I’m going there) could be said to have picked up on the concept, although not in any real elegant way. Because of fan feedback for Moyo to get a season (which they declined to do for super valid reasons I’m sure), the team decided to have Moyo be the LI and worked backwards to build the main. It is similar to how SKAM approached Sana’s LI. Moyo is a black guy, so Kato would be a racist! Genius!

Given these precedents, I was really curious what Nora’s season in DRUCK would do with their first 100% original love interest (so, not counting David). If they decided to go with SKAM’s standard way of building a LI, there were several possibilities. Nora’s mom has addiction issues, and this is a vulnerability of Nora’s. Would that mean that Josh would have substance issues? Or maybe his dad? His mom? Nora has a mental illness. Would that mean Josh would have issues around mental illness or therapy? Would he maybe have a mental illness himself? Nora was set up from the start as a liar. Would Josh be honest to a fault? And so on.

In the end, it seems like DRUCK has taken the same approach they did with David. That is, Nora doesn’t have to accept something about Josh that she has preconceived ideas about (Noora, Isak, Sana), neither are Josh and Nora extremes in one character trait (Eva and Jonas). With this clip, it appears that their conflict is that Nora has a problem sharing her vulnerabilities (reminder: she didn’t come clean in English class out of a desire to be vulnerable, but to prove a point) and Josh has abandonment issues that make him prefer to try to change a person or even be hurt, rather than be left behind.

DRUCK’s approach to building a LI in s5 (and probably beyond) might end up making the season less cohesive than SKAM seasons were. On the other hand, you can argue that the way SKAM built LIs could end up being too predictable (Isak is afraid of MI so Even has a MI, Sana is a Muslim so Yousef isn’t, Noora is afraid of being used for sex so William uses girls for sex, etc) and perhaps lowkey reductionist. And that’s without getting into the issues of making a character’s mental illness, religion, gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity or race, etc... the source of another character’s vulnerability (or “shame” or “pressure” if you will). This is particularly clear in the hands of lesser writers, as seen on wtFOCK and SKAM France.

I will also get yelled at by @dusuessekartoffel if I fail to acknowledge that DRUCK is now doing original seasons and, though based on SKAM, should therefore become its own thing, develop LIs how they will, without taking SKAM as a model for anything. Iiiiii... think that DRUCK still owes a lot to SKAM even in this generation, and I kind of feel like the way SKAM built LIs is like the real time aspect of SKAM, something that is embedded into the very concept of the show and not something you can just discard when you buy the adaptation rights, but this is certainly up for debate.

He and father had never talk to each other again since that. Even she was angry, she sneaked into his room to talk to him sometimes. Surprisingly, Jacob talked to her. He also told her that he may disappear one day to seek for something and if he found it, it might make the situation better. Having thought about Jacob leaving, she cried and tried to beg him not to go. Jacob lied that he changed his mind and promised to stay. One morning when Danique went to his room to show her new achievement of wandless spell, he was not there.

tell us about their personality/the kind of character they are/what kind of goals etc they have: cocky, arrogant and full of himself: he’s a double of his father through and through. but the fact is, harry also has both of his parents sweet hearts and kind, thoughtful natures. harry is, in spite of some closed-off natures in the past, a very warm and kind hearted person. he is very positive about people changing for the better, and helping people along that journey. he is patient and encouraging, but he can still be judgemental at times too-- falling into some old habits. he holds people to their past mistakes and can be a harsh critic alongside his fiery temper. but this has gotten a lot better with age and he’s not the same person he was in his school years at all. his edges can be a lot softer, but it takes time for that to show with someone. harry however, also deals with a lot of negative emotions within himself. he has severe ptsd among other mental illnesses and while he’s working on it, he still struggles with life after a war-- after being raised in it and constantly in the limelight as the ‘saviour’ of the wizarding world. he’s become a lot more private and closed off, but it’s about to change when the world becomes aware of something he did almost three years ago now. harry’s goals remain fairly focused on helping to further shift the society he is a part of, to move it further than it’s archaic ways especially within government. but further than that, he wants to help not only educate young wizards, but those across the world that perhaps need it. harry longs to find a deeper purpose in life. it’s been almost seven years since the end of the wizarding war-- almost three years since he returned and settled down in albion, and yet, harry still feels as lost as he did the day the war ended and voldemort was defeated.

biography: harry spent his childhood in isolation. his only real reprieve from his abusive home would be the few times he managed to sneak out and run off to the woods and lose himself to his imagination. as a child, harry was extremely introverted and often lost inside his head. this changed greatly once he discovered the truth about himself, that he was a wizard, and started at hogwarts and made actual friends. harry always dreamed of a life of more, but due to the constant abuse from his ‘family’ telling him how worthless he was, harry never believed it were possible till he started at hogwarts. harry suffered emotional, mental and physical abuse as a child. he was purposely isolated and ‘hidden away’ and made to feel like a burden, like a shameful person. and the dursley’s were racist fucks among all their abusive shit. they were downright disgusting to harry and no, he never forgave them. when he first ever visited the burrow, harry found a genuine, real safe place and he always felt ten times lighter anytime he was there.

harry’s life changed seemingly every single year at hogwarts and there was a dramatic, horrible event around ever corner. most of the time, they were part of a grander plot: lord voldemort’s return and take over. eventually, in what was meant to be his seventh and final year of study, the war between voldemort’s forces and the order ended. after a year spent hunting horcruxes and facing impossible odds, harry defeated voldemort. a final, brutal battle at hogwarts saw many loses, but eventually, the cruel dark wizard’s defeat was won.

and from there, harry disappeared. by december of the year 114, harry had booked passage out of albion and was headed for ketterdam. harry spent the next few years of his life travelling from place to place, seeing more of the world, witnessing different cultures and learning of the world. he hates what he sees in ravka, absolutely loathes what he witnesses in fjerda and shu han. but still, harry gains a greater appreciation for the world and disappearing from his life certainly helped him to feel better ( read: avoid ) his own problems. however, he did keep in contact with his closest friends for the entire time and met up with them from time to time, but he never returned to albion properly, not until in the year 118, harry potter finally went home.

an important thing to note is that while harry’s travels had been… fun, interesting for the most part, it had also been about gaining more knowledge of his and other kinds of magic. it had been about understanding that which he possessed, that which he never told anyone, not even his closest friends, that he still had: the deathly hallows. harry never set the elder wand back in dumbledore’s grave. harry never dropped the resurrection stone. and of course, he kept the invisibility cloak. not that he needed the actual items. no, harry had already possessed each of them in the same instance and therefore, he became master of death. but he still kept them, feeling a call to the items and always fearing that setting them down would result in someone else hunting for them.

what harry found in these few years, was that there were stories across the world of the hallows. different names in places, different details to the story. but always, death was the focus. overcoming it the ultimate goal. inevitably, harry began testing and pushing the limits of his powers, powers that he found had only grown stronger with time and practice. it started with pushing his healing powers on both himself and others. it only grew from there and harry inevitably became wildly talented with wandless and non verbal magic-- a difficult feat for most weaver wizards. but when harry returned to albion, to the home his parents had died in, twenty two years old and a year older than they ever got the chance to be, something seemed to shift in harry. powered by his grief and fuelled by all he’d been learning, he tried something that was supposed to be impossible by normal standards. but then, when had harry ever gotten the chance to be normal? he raged, desperate to just bring his parents back, to grant them life that had been stolen from them-- to give them a chance, and to for once, stop having those he loved taken from him.

but the universe had other plans and instead, it backfired. harry gained extensive scarring along his forearms and outward from his heart. lightning scars more intense than that which graced his forehead. and still, no parents. but as he came back to himself there was someone there-- sirius black, his godfather.

it’s now been almost three years since that night, and harry has been living entirely at grimmauld place and has done his best to help his godfather readjust to this life and has developed a deeper bond with him. he’s incredibly grateful to have been given this chance, even if they both have their fears as to the price of it and how lasting it’ll be. but for now, things seem to have been going well. harry has also been working for two and a half years now within the auror department for the ministry and is… casually dedicated. mostly he’s just… following what he figures is expected and demanded of him. but after more recent events in ravka, harry has a great interest in switching to a more international reach within his job.

THE BACKSTORY .

saint’s story starts when his parents , moon ji - ho and park soo - ah went on their first date . in truth , it had been a rare instance of love at first sight when they bumped into each other at ji - ho’s office in seoul , and the date was only used to solidify their feelings . you see , ji - ho and soo - ah were fairly well known with ji - ho being the second heir to moon industries alongside his sister , moon eun - ha . moon industries was founded in the 1940s , and is known primarily for their real estate and construction business . the company was founded in seoul , and originally started out by purchasing and renovating beautiful homes and condominiums within the city . after thirty years in the business , ji - ho and eun - ha’s father was one of the first in south korea to reach the status of billionaire .

ji - ho and soo -ah were looking to forge their own path , though . although they were lucky enough to have wealthy parents , both of them have always liked the idea of working for themselves and getting their hands dirty . so , they refused ji - ho’s father’s investment and decided to start their own real estate firm . they went through the process of obtaining their real estate license in both south korea and the united states , specifically in florida . after studying hard , they were able to open moon real estate , and it was a hassle for them . they initially ‘ struggled ’ seeing as though they were their only employees , and soon , soo - ah discovered that she was pregnant with their son .

for four years , they worked hard with their bumbling baby boy , saint , crawling at their feet and curiously looking at home or building buyers . for a long time , they considered saint to be their closer as he was the selling point and allowed people to hold him while looking at the home . usually , soo - ah would use saint as a marketing ploy whenever they were trying to sell to young couples , and it always worked . the moons became known for saint syndrome , where those same young couples would typically call to say that they were expecting within a year of buying their home . it only took a few years , but the moons were soon raking in their own money without the help of ji - ho’s father .

when saint was six , his family relocated to key biscayne , florida . life was easy living on the water , and his parents continued to sell gorgeous homes both in seoul and in the wealthy neighborhoods of florida . with such a lifestyle , it wasn’t unheard of for saint to excel at his private school , where he was known for his academic prowess as well as his ability to play both the piano and the cello . saint was a fairly popular student while growing up , and it showed when the moons would host their annual christmas party .

he was fourteen when he finally started to understand the rivalry between thoroughbreds and gatsbys . originally , he put off like he didn’t care , but in reality he was trying to figure it out . the moons were a special case , considering that ji - ho was clearly an heir to a billion dollar fortune , but also had become wealthy in his own right thanks to his business with his wife . saint never understood that jabs and jeers that he would receive from thoroughbreds , because to him , they were all rich so what the hell did it matter ? he eventually began to side more with the gatsbys , never understanding why the thoroughbreds felt as though they needed to stick their noses up in the air at them .

within two years , though , saint seems to have changed for the worse . while his grades may be good , he begins to spend more time with new friends in miami . while there , he surrounds himself with fast cars and short nights , but he thinks it’s his parents’ fault for buying him a 488 spider for his sixteenth birthday . saint began to get into trouble , often pulled over for speeding and reckless driving to impress his friends . like always , a star is meant to fall , and it all came crashing down for saint when he thought that drag racing on u.s. route 1 was a good idea . he assumed that he could lose the cops , but he was stupid for ever thinking so -- he totaled the $1.3m dollar car , and after being treated for minor injuries , he was booked in the county jail .

having rich parents seems to be all fun and games considering they were barely able to get him out with a slap on the wrist , but that very same night they sent him away on a business plane to live with his no - nonsense grandparents . for the first year , saint pouted and argued , screamed and kicked over being trapped in seoul . he tried to escape the fortress of a house in pyeongchang , attempted to ditch his security guards when he went out in public , but he eventually realized that there was no getting out of this . so , he made the most out of it : he finished school , and during his senior year with the help of his grandparents , saint opened goodnight moon , a late night café that appealed to college students and late workers in need of a coffee and pastry pick me up . the café went viral , and so did the handsome owner .

he returned home when he was twenty , and discovered that key biscayne was filming . as the resident who suddenly disappeared , saint was sought after by the producers and was introduced mid - way through the second season .

THE SHOW .

saint and his family were not introduced on key biscayne until midway through season two . he was introduced as most table shakers would be , with a flurry of local headlines ranging from KEY BISCAYNE TEEN ARRESTED FOR DRAG RACING and HOW MONEY GETS YOU OUT OF A JAIL SENTENCE . his parents didn’t like the idea of being on a reality series , so they weren’t featured although there were a few scenes with them .

he was the reality show villain and you can’t tell me otherwise ! showed up with an air of what the fUCk ever and despite the air around him since he was arrested and shipped back to south korea , he never let that stop him ? like ofc he’s a rich boy who got away with something bc he’s rich , but it’s not that he doesn’t acknowledge it , he just chooses not to talk about it .

was definitely the subject of show cliffhangers , probably nearly got kicked off the show because of his short temperament and despite all that would still be invited to the reunions because he would always start some shit . he was very vocal about who he didn’t like on the show , and probably had good chemistry with a cast mate and fans of the show always pushed for them to become a thing ( a wc ... mayhaps 👀 ) but they were never anything more than friends .

by the end of the show , saint was that cast member that fans love to hate . he was employee of the month , and that’s on period ! gave what he was supposed to gave and was highkey problematic ( not in a bad way , but in a way where he was always the one in the middle of some shit ) and when people would question him about it ofc he didn’t care KFNDSJBFS .

THE PERSONALITY .

a little shit . that’s it . that’s all you need to know . although he’s standoffish , still has his insecurities because he’s not the ‘ perfect ’ son that his parents pushed for him to be . very much so the black sheep of the family , and is deemed as a lost cause by his thespian of a mother , so he figures that he might as well live up to that name . comes across as someone who genuinely doesn’t care , and he doesn’t KFDBJSFSD . sometimes only looks out for himself which adds more sand into the asshole bin , and he hates being asked ‘ dumb ’ questions . it’s a pet peeve that his mom thinks he picked up from his father .

THE HEADCANONS .

he does not want to be your friend KFNDSFUS . he can be very standoffish just to get that point across , and he doesn’t interact with people outside of a chosen few .

can be wildly off putting and while someone else may be afraid of confrontation , he isn’t ! might be the subject of bar brawls and minor scraps because he genuinely does not know how to shut the hell up .

hates walnuts ; idk why that’s important but it is . serve him something with walnuts in it and he’ll never talk to you again .

romantically and emotionally stunted , therefore he bides his time with casual sex and noncommittal acts of romance . can be found slipping out of beds in the middle of the night , never returns texts , and at times will pretend that he doesn’t know who the other person is ( ew ! ) .

a chaotic boy with a heart of gold , he just doesn’t show it and has mastered the art of being fake .

The Longbottom family is an ancient one with origins in China, their surname once Liang. However, a branch has been established in England for centuries, and they are a member of the Sacred Twenty-Eight with a complicated sense of pride about it. Their historical alignment has not been as consistent as some families; they didn’t always Sort to one House, they married into families on both sides of many divides, they were both agricultural and urban in turns.

One consistency was that for several consecutive generations, Longbottoms married other purebloods of East Asian descent. Alice, whose family is Jewish, was an obvious deviation from the pattern, but Frank had fallen for her so emphatically and they were such an ideal match that no one really stood in their way. And they were so happy together, for the time they had together as two independent people taking on the world as a pair.

A baby was born to Frank and Alice Longbottom on July 30, 1996, as the seventh month died. Brave Aurors who were focused on the war, Frank and Alice were nevertheless doting and attentive parents. While the family was supportive of Neville’s trans identity, they were less understanding about his struggles with magic. For a long time, it was thought that Neville was a Squib. His uncle Algernon “Algie” Longbottom threw him off of a pier in Blackpool in an effort to get him to manifest his magic. The impact ruptured his eardrums, and while there was an easy magical fix to the injury, Neville was too scared to tell anyone for a long time, and he experienced partial hearing loss. While Healed, Neville still likes to use signs and body language to communicate sometimes. He’s curious about the use of signing for spell-casting without vocalization or wands and has wondered before whether that would help him with some magic with which he still has difficulty.

During his time at Hogwarts, Neville’s physical transition followed a schedule similar to puberty with Poppy Pomfrey helping administer the Attisgali Corrective Draught in the appropriate doses. There were stretches during his seventh year when the supply chain for Potions ingredients was disrupted. Because of this, on top of everything else, that year was when he felt the worst dysphoria he has experienced before or since.

Because of the nature of his transition, it is not necessarily public knowledge that Neville is trans. It can be assumed that family members, close friends, and romantic connections are aware. Additionally, people who are old enough to remember him being born may be aware. As a result, while Neville was bullied throughout his school career for his awkwardness and ineptness, he did not face specifically transphobic harassment. The fear was always in the back of his mind, however, forming a complex interaction with his insecurities and trauma. He’s always been sure that he was male. He was just never sure whether he was man enough.

He helped defeat Voldemort by slicing the head off of Nagini and then killing him at last along with his friends and comrades of Dumbledore’s Army. Theirs was a bittersweet triumph, but at last, Neville knew in his heart that he was a man that would have made his parents proud. Nevertheless, he still struggles with self-worth, including body image issues on occasion. He’s trying to do the positive self-talk in the mirror thing, but sometimes he’d rather just exist.

The hope of green growing things means everything to Neville. Pomona Sprout was a mentor for him at Hogwarts, and he still conducts research with her. However, he has chosen to be based out of London instead. He opened his shop in Diagon Alley shortly after graduating from Hogwarts, and despite Augusta Longbottom’s disapproval of his relatively soft career compared to his parents’, he decided that he wanted to honor them by naming his shop Frank & Alice’s Fine Flora.

His shop is a small establishment with a magically Extended greenhouse-like backroom for growing both commercial plants and plants of other use, such as Dittany. At the front of the shop, he sells both domestic and exotic plants, magical and ordinary, including flowers, herbs, and vegetables, both magical and non-magical in nature. He also lives in a flat above his shop. On the side, he provides consultancy and input on everything from illegal seed possession on the Ministry’s behalf to ailing trees on the trees’ behalf. He sometimes journeys around London and the United Kingdom for field research on native plants and to collect seeds. He is also interested in venturing further afield, but recent events have made him stick more closely to London.

His parents also tie him down to London. He goes to St. Mungo’s and spends time with them as often as he can bear. They do know him and they do love him. He’s convinced of that. But he hasn’t given up hope, not entirely, that they might be healed one day, and he might know them as they were before their torture by Bellatrix Lestrange.

He is one-third leader of Dumbledore’s Army in its third reincarnation, and he takes his duties extremely seriously. Neville has more confidence in himself now, and he certainly believes in the power of their collective action against the forces of darkness rising again in their world. He does not, however, put a lot of faith in institutions, including but not limited to the Ministry of Magic and the Daily Prophet. This mistrust does also sometimes extend to people older or in greater positions of authority than himself.

In his mind, he and his peers have been let down and failed one too many times by them. Neville would rather they take matters into their own hands as they did before.

Neville remains in contact with many friends from Hogwarts and has made many new ones. He’s still a bit awkward and frequently forgetful, terminally clumsy, and not the world’s most skilled wizard apart from his reflexes when dueling and his exceptional aptitude for Herbology. While he hasn’t been able to bring himself to attend support group meetings, he’s always slowly processing and healing from everything that has happened and continues to happen. He’s more forgiving of past transgressions than others, and he feels that he can occasionally reach out across the aisle. He has no tolerance for bullies, however, and although he is gentle-natured, that is a vehement position for him. Largely a pacifist, he’s also not afraid to fight for what is right, yet again.

America, Nico, and/or Xavin for hcs?

America Chavez

Major coffee drinker. She pretends not to have a caffeine dependency, but she drinks as much coffee as Kate. The two of them hoarded coffee beans on Noh’s ship, and they had to form a coffee resource alliance against David and Billy.

Gets along better with Tommy than Billy, which isn’t really surprising– they more in common with each other than they do any of the other Young Avengers. They both have a habit of “stretching their legs” and ending up in different countries (or planets, in America’s case.) Sometimes when America takes a day trip to a foreign city, she’ll sit down at a park or cafe, tag her location, and wait for Tommy to show up.

Kate introduced her to Nico and Karolina when she moved to LA. America actually tried really hard to be friends with Karolina, which is unlike her, but it’s not every day you meet another refugee lesbian alien orphan in your age group. Unfortunately, their personalities really don’t mesh and America is a little shocked by how sheltered and privelaged Karolina can come off.

America saw through Kid Loki’s lies better than anyone, save Leah, and she could tell that part of him really was a scared and lonely child. She was secretly really sad about Loki’s transformation, and was the most upset that he disappeared without resolving any of their problems.

America’s powers are actually magic, even though most people don’t think of her as a magician. Fuertona and the Utopian Parallel are both rich in ambient magic and mystical traditions.

Billy has offered to help her learn more about her powers, when he realized they’re magical. He even asked Wanda for advice, since she knows way more about magic than he does. America politely turned them down– she’s determined not to view Billy as the Demiurge or allow his future to interfere with her present.

Billy still doesn’t know that the “demiurge moment” is going to be the creation of America’s homeworld- she’s kept it a secret from everybody except Loki.

Minoru Nico

Nico was apparently raised Christian, but this was probably a ruse on her parents’ part. At least one side of her family practices a form of hereditary magic that likely predates Japan’s introduction to Western culture… which makes it hard for me to believe that they’re actually Christian. Cultivating the image of a church-going family was just a tactic to hide their “dark magic” practices.

Outside of the Runaways, Nico’s closest friend is Billy Kaplan. Teen witches stick together! Billy is probably the only person Nico could talk to about magic for a number of years, and they used to email a lot- this was before the superhero forums and networks were well established, and Nico herself was never much for social media, especially when she was a renegade minor.

They fell out of touch for a while – Billy was in a pretty bad place after Children’s Crusade, and Nico was even worse off after Avengers Arena and A-Force. She has reached out again, now that her life is more stable.

Billy has definitely been Nico’s go-to when she needs to talk about her sexuality and her feelings for Karolina. He’s probably her closest, if not only, gay friend besides Karolina herself.

One of Nico and Karolina’s earliest dates was actually a night out with Billy and Kate! He came out to LA to visit his former teammates, and insisted on getting Nico out of the Hostel to live a little.

Although she is reluctant, and cautious, Nico is trying to figure out how to be a proper witch. The Staff trick is great, but it’s basically a magic cheat code, and now more than ever she has to be wary of relying on it.

Having said that, the Staff itself is a powerful conduit, and wands in general are useful tools. If Nico can master some basic elemental conjuring or energy calling, it would be a great weapon even without relying on the One.

Nico would probably eschew her parents’ style of of sorcery. The Minorus practiced blood magic, the kind that always costs a pound of flesh… yours, or someone else’s.

Sympathetic magic, on the other hand, operates on similar principles, but it requires a lot less sacrifice. Nico finds this style of spellcasting lends itself much better to protecting her home and loved ones… which is exactly what she needs.

Nico was invited to teach at the Strange Academy, but it’s more like a work-study program. Jericho, Wanda, and Ilyana will be able to mentor her while she leads the kids in training excersizes.

Xavin

There’s very little information about gender in Skrull society, but I think it’s safe to assume that Skrull military training discourages individuality, to make their soldiers into better spies and infiltrators. Kids like Xavin probably don’t have a clear gender identity.

Although Xavin appears to be very confident in their ideas about genderfluidity when they first come to Earth, they’ve probably never been in a situation where they get to determine their own gender presentation. Having a rudimentary grasp of human gender and sex might explain why they swing between two very polar ends of the spectrum.

Given the opportunity, Xavin might prefer taking a more neutral or androgynous form and focusing their energy on variable gender expressions, rather than shifting between variable bodies. It seems like it more grounding and maybe a gentler way for Xavin to build a sense of self.

Even though we don’t know much about Skrull gender, I do think it’s important to note that Xavin was pretty clearly assigned male at birth. Even thought I never see it framed this way, I think that Xavin’s exploration of gender on Earth does qualify as a trans feminine experience, and that informs a lot of the tension in their relationship with Karolina. There are a lot of unique complications to unpack when you’re a trans or nonbinary person dating a cisgender gay person, and I definitely see that reflected in the pressure that Karolina puts on Xavin to maintain an unambiguously female form.

I want to believe that Xavin was able to escape the Light Brigade without much trouble. It’s got to be hard keeping a Super Skrull locked down, even if you’re prepared for it, but the Light Brigade had no idea they were jetting off with a shapeshifter who can also turn invisible and generate forcefields. If they really wanted to, Xavin could probably fake their own death.

So, where would they go? They probably wouldn’t return to the Empire, and the only place they have to call home is planet Earth.

If they are on Earth, they clearly aren’t in Los Angeles. Xavin likely would have gotten back to Earth when the Runaways were at their lowest– Chase and Nico missing, Gert dead, Victor dead, Molly and Klara in foster care. Karolina is still alive and well… with Julie.

So Xavin gets out of California without making contact, and instead reaches out to the only other Skrull they know– Teddy Altman.

Teddy, at this point, is still working for AIM and living, most the time, on the island base, so he puts Xavin in contact with his other alien buddy Noh-Varr.

Noh-Varr and Xavin are roommates in Noh-Varr’s spaceship and now they’re both music nerds. #kreeskrullunity

Reflection “Essay” #2

Hey everyone! I just wanted to take some time this week and talk about something that I think is extremely important, so buckle up, because this piece is kind of long.

Activism is something we encounter in our everyday lives, whether it be in social media, the news, or something ordinary like laptop stickers. Most recently, Black Lives Matter was under the spotlight (as it should) in the wake of America’s track record of police brutality and George Floyd’s death. Unfortunately, the movement that was fueled by public outcry and outstanding shows of allyship in the early summer months has largely vanished.

The voices of many celebrities and influencers on platforms Instagram and Twitter have gone silent, moving on as the news turned away from BLM protests despite the thousands of people that continued to rally around the country and the world. As we wrap up election season and move into December, what the US is focused on now is the soon-to-be former POTUS and other political news. (My point is that the world of media has largely deemed BLM “no longer relevant” despite the ongoing struggle BIPOC folxs continue to face even after thousands of protests nation AND worldwide.)

To all the people who posted black squares with the hashtags #BlackoutTuesday and #BlackLivesMatter, where are you now? Where is the support, the public outcry that had been so loud in June? Why do civil rights only matter when they’re relevant in the media, when you can score easy clout from it?

I’m sure most of them had their hearts in the right place, but the fact remains true that they fell victim to ‘ally theater’, a term that Anderson and Accomando credit Princess Harmony Rodrigez for coining. The two authors go on to say, “The concern here is about activists who focus on performing an identity for an audience of disadvantaged folk rather than doing the hard and often unseen work of social change.” (P 713) and “To get out of the surface-level ally theater loop, white people need to challenge other whites about racism—even when no one else is watching.” (P 714) in their article The Pitfalls of Ally Performance.

That’s where many people fail the first step of being an ally; they mistakenly believe that for a month of sparse posts concerning awareness, they gain the privilege of being an ally. They forget that allyship is a title that needs to be earned. It’s not enough to play activist for a month and then move on with your life—to be an ally, you must continue to be an activist, even if that’s something as simple as shopping at BIPOC small-owned businesses instead of Amazon. (Here’s a little help for those of you who don’t know where to start: 42 Black-owned beauty brands to shop at instead of Sephora, and 108 Black-owned businesses you can check out.) You have to acknowledge the hard work of POC the exact same way you praise white celebrities and influencers for being ‘woke’. A fantastic example is Harry Styles.

For the 2019 Met Gala, Styles showed up to the red carpet in heels and a sheer black Gucci blouse. This made fans go nuts; they praised him for being a camp icon but glossed over equally stunning outfits like Billy Porter’s golden, winged ensemble (who was carried in on a litter!!! by SIX MEN!!!) or Lena Waithe’s suit. This year fans ran to social media again, this time to gush over the photo spread of him in a dress, thanking Styles for ending toxic masculinity (yes this was a Tweet I read with my own two eyes), congratulating him on defying gender norms, and completely forgetting about others who did it before him.

Male and AMAB (assigned male at birth) non-binary stars like Billy Porter, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller, and JVN are only a handful who’ve appeared in public in dresses and/or skirts before, making it unfair for people to heap gratuitous praise onto Styles’s photoshoot. I’m not trying to bash him or anything and I think that cover was gorgeous, but you can’t be an ally while you idolize Harry Styles for wearing a dress but ignore POC/queer folx who did too.

Now, the second topic I wanted to address: a second helping of fake allyship, this time in the corporate realm.

I love June, but it’s also a mentally exhausting month queer individuals who are sick and tired of fake allyship. Cisgenderists crawl out of the woodwork to whine about ‘straight pride’ as if they don’t have enough of it, influencers capitalize on Pride’s popularity to promote their brand, and large corporations break out the rainbow merch to make a pretty penny off the same people marginalize the other eleven months of the year.

June is for people like me to celebrate our identities together, whether it be at a public Pride event or in the privacy of our own homes. It is not for big businesses to slap rainbows on their merchandise and boast false claims of LGBTQ+ support when corporations like Walmart and Starbucks have done nothing at all to support the message or the mission of Pride.

Building an Abolitionist and Trans Queer Movement With Everything We’ve Got by Bassichis, Lee, and Spade writes “transgender and gender-non-conforming people are repeatedly abandoned and marginalized in the agendas and priorities of our “lead” organizations” (P743) and I couldn’t agree more. The fact of the matter is that under this capitalist regime, queer individuals are just another tool for the privledged elite to take advantage of.

Mega corporations claim to be on our side for a month, playing at queer allyship with rainbow beer cans and happy ads that feature more rainbows and scripted proclamations of LGBTQ+ support, but disappear just as quickly come July.

Certain celebrities tweet during Pride, garnering the applause of the public and cause people across social media to ‘stan’ celebrities that post “Happy Pride!” just for the shallow allyship it grants them. And it’s so normalized for public figures to post all month long about Pride, and suddenly stop in July that we don’t question it.

Donald Trump occasionally preaches about his support of the queer community (which we all know is a joke) and how he’s “the first president to openly support the LGBT community” despite the fact that he gutted LGBTQ+ legislation and his terrible track record concerning queer folx. If he really was a queer ally then why, as Bassichis, Lee, and Spade say, is there “ no inheritance, no health benefits from employers, no legal immigration status, and no state protection of our relationship to our children.”?

That’s why I want to put the spotlight on a game called The Last of Us: Part II. It’s a post-apocalyptic survival horror game so it’s the last place you’d expect to find LGBTQ+ representation, but the main character is a lesbian who has a (Jewish) girlfriend and has an Asian (not white!!) transman, along with another character I strongly believe is aromantic and/or asexual. Their character arcs tie into the story well despite many fans calling out the game developers for pandering to the queer community, and the exhilaration I felt when I saw myself (mostly) represented in a character (who was voiced by an Asian transman!) is unparalleled.

They didn’t have to include any LGBTQ+ content or accurate representation, could have left the main character’s sexuality presumably heterosexual, but they went where most bestselling games don’t, because they’re genuine allies. They brought in voice actors who were Black, Asian, and Latinx to voice characters who were Black, Asian, and Latinx.

That’s what we need more of, not trendsetting celebrities and people who say trans rights just to feel better about themselves.

red ridge, nv, 1989. camille is born on the day that marks the beginning of the rorschach killings. she is six hours old when her father, detective jeffrey thomas, is called on the scene where the first body was found: camille and the murderer later known as rorschach are, in a way, born at the same time.

deeth, nv, 1995. each body found takes a piece of jeffrey’s mind with them and he has begun to wash away. camille is young, and naive, but she can see it: fading out of the picture, he’s less her father every day, more a vague stain whose edges she can’t contain. july 22nd a new body is found, and in his rush to leave he forgets to lock the door to his study. she is a curious child, her thirst for knowledge, like his thirst for truth: uncontainable. she sees pictures, photographs, sketches. she senses evil in them, she should not be looking at them: still there’s a strange fascination in each array of pale bodies and blood, and she begins sketching these in the privacy of her bedroom, when mom and dad are asleep, or out there fighting the monsters.

ruby valley, nv, 1996. a christmas present to the good people of nevada: rorschach was found. it wasn’t her father who caught him, but his partner, detective frank d'angelo — on christmas night her father was muttering at the window that they’d gotten it wrong, they were going to see. but he’s been kicked out of the force months ago, and camille was happy, thought this would mean he would spend time at home and they’d finally go fishing like he’d promised. they never go fishing. her christmas present is a sweater her mother knit for her. she looks at her with teary eyes, and says i’m sorry: this won’t make up for the warmth we lack.

west wendover, nv, 1999. something’s wrong: someone else has died. she’s old enough now to understand how it works, how the nightmare should’ve ended when they caught the murderer daniel flores, also known as rorschach— but the killings continue and it’s clear there’s been a miscalculation. uncle frank comes home often now, and he and jeffrey spend hours in his study, trying to piece everything together. sometimes camille presses her ears to the door and steals bits of dialogue. “her blood”, “his skin”, “the motive”, “identity”. at night she draws stain-like sketches and gives them all a title: her blood, his skin, the motive, identity.

red ridge, nv, 2003. her birthday comes with a funeral. first it was FLORES, who hung himself in his cell with shoelaces he never should have had in the first place. then it was her father: shot himself in the head by the desert he promised he’d take her to teach her how to drive. she wasn’t surprised — she’d seen the color leak out of him bit by bit, and people need color to survive. they lower his casket in the ground on the day she’s supposed to turn into a teenager (but she’s older, much older now: she’s woman and mother and crone, and the weight of the world is taking residence on her shoulders, today). after the funeral, she stands by that same spot, staring back at the sand, imagining her father standing there. then a manemerges, like ink in the water, from the woods. he is sad, he is broken: she doesn’t know him, but knows the sorrow pouring from his eyes, so eager to drown anything around it. she asks who he is, why is he there, why does he look so sad? he just stares and says he’s sorry. then, like ink in the water, disappears.

red ridge, nv, 2006. over the summer, her house becomes claustrophobic. her mother’s sorrow is tangible, even if fading out from her own mind: it chokes her daughter. a summer job comes as a salvation — camille spends her days at the local police precinct, sketching the faces of petty criminals to be found so quickly she proves to be a vital resource for the force. he was right, wasn’t he? detective d'angelo, who recommended her: trying to make amends for her father, perhaps. her mother gets worse every day. she loses herself in mazes of her own memories, and one night she begins crying, pleading “algernon, algernon, algernon —”. camille struggles to fall back asleep, but when she does she sees a face she has seen three years before: she’d forgotten it but it’s clear now, etched into her memory. the face of sorrow, the face of fragmentation.

quantico, va, 2013. her intuition is a superpower: she knows characters, she recognizes their traits. when she joins the FBI she’s one of the most promising young profilers of her generation — her sketches gain quite the fame, but it is not the path she wants to pursue, or not entirely. her studies have focused on criminal psychology, and perhaps she is looking for something, for an answer. a key to uncover the enigma sitting at the back of her mouth. she devours criminology books to draw a deeper understanding of the evil of the world, but the enigma at the back of her mouth feeds off of them. it begins taking a shape, a shadow-self latched onto the unfinished question her father had posited, but could never answer. that night she digs up all her father’s materials, and stares at the blood sprays of the crime scenes, like rorschach stains on paper, and asks herself: what do you see?

red ridge, nv, 2020. special agent thomas’ birthday is a funeral. not yet: but the body before her is cold, devoid of life and color. michael kaspar has died, at the blood around him resembles wings, or a cape, or a crown. special agent thomas has seen this before: to anyone else that was an old case, buried and safely removed from the minds of those who covered it up, but she knows it so intimately she can’t turn away. it is the same old question, echoed by each victim until the latest one: what do you see?

Blue, the Warmest Color? Or the Most Profitable Color?

Blue Is the Warmest Color is a 2013 French movie directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, which won a lot of rewards including the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Prize. This is a three-hour film about the romance story of a 15-year-old high school girl, Adèle (starring Adèle Exarchopoulos) and a female artist Emma (starring Léa Seydoux). The entire story depicts carefully about Adèle’s growth from adolescence to middle age, accompanied by confusion and struggle for her sexual identity.

At the beginning of this story, Adèle was dating a boy, Thomas. Once they were dating, Adèle passed by a blue-haired girl when crossing the road. After this encounter, Adèle woke up in a dream about making love with this girl. She was confused and embarrassed by this fantasy. When her best friend Valentin, an openly gay man found her unhappy, he took her to a gay bar for fun. But later, Adèle came out and entered a lesbian bar by chance, where she met (again) and started getting to know the blue-haired girl, Emma. Adèle and Emma became friends and hung out with each other frequently. And their romance relationship confirmed by a shared kiss when picnic. A few years later, Adèle realized her dream to become a primary school teacher; Emma was preparing her art exhibition, and their relationship was not passionate like it used to be. Adèle had a sexual relationship with her male colleague Antoine because of Emma’s indifference. After this was known by Emma, she drove Adèle out of the home immediately and refused her apology. Although Adèle expressed her love for Emma again a few years later, could not recover the relationship. And Emma had formed a new family with her first love, Lise.

At the end of the film, when Adèle attended Emma’s art exhibition and saw many portraits of her own, she chose to leave quickly, which also marked the complete end of this relationship. In general, this film records the whole story of Adèle and Emma in a very delicate way, trying to present the audience with true lesbian life detail. And the goal of making the audience get involved in the real-life of the LGBTQIA community can contribute to the sympathy and understanding of them to a certain extent, which is conducive to the diversity of the media. But I critic that this film is still unable to break away from the use of lesbian love as the strategy “for creating ‘edgy’ programming and attracting a wide range of viewers” (Kohnen, 2015). And many descriptions in this film deepen the audience’s misunderstanding of the lesbian group.

Firstly, this film does a great job of recording Adèle’s life detail. For example, she always has a messy hair, she will open her mouth when sleeping, and she loves biting the bottom of the pen when she reads. When she gets lost or drunk, the film’s scene will shake and be a blur, just as seen from Adèle’s perspective. When she in the literature class, the shots keep switching to the teacher’s lecture and the students’ distraction because of the boring content. As a viewer, I can also feel that this content was very boring. The film recorded all these tiny details by using this first-person perspective technique to make Adèle just like a friend in our own life, or actually, she is ourselves. I believe to depict a character on a very personal level is a great strategy to promote the audience’s understanding. And this method also mentioned in the Goltz’s article for finding an effective term to refers to gay or lesbian in Kenyan language context, that one man focus on “there was more to him than his sexuality and that he was ‘beyond being homosexual or being a gay man’ ” and “ ‘to come out as me and not to highlight his sexuality, preferring to ‘talk about me, about my life, not about my queer life” (Goltz et al, 2016).

The tricky thing is that even though this film wants to show the real-life of lesbian, it almost becomes the most controversial lesbian movie because of the ten-minute (or even longer) lesbian sex scene. In fact, I was super embarrassed when I watch this scene because I invited all my roommates to watch this film together as a celebration of the weekend. I am not an extremely conservative person, I mean, the sex scene in this film is simply porn-level, so that we had to turn down the volume and made some jokes to cover up our embarrassment. Firstly, there was no background music in this scene, only big gasps instead and the sound of skin rubbing. Secondly, the scene boldly shows female whole body, without cover. In addition, the two actresses are very good in shape, without flaw or even pubic hair. This is the most confusing place for me. On the one hand, the director wants to present the most authentic lesbian life, which even refuses the background music at the sex scene; on the other hand, it idealizes the female body just as the male gaze, the flawless body, and the perfect shape.

Interestingly, the original author of this story, Julie Maroh expressed the same shock as me. She rated the most lacking in this film is lesbian, and aired her suspicion that there were no lesbians present onset (Romney, 2013). And “a brutal and surgical display, exuberant and cold, of so-called lesbian sex, which turned into porn” (Sciolino, 2013). Maroh replied in the interview, “everyone was giggling. Heterosexuals laugh at because they don’t understand it and find the scene ridiculous. The gay and queer people laughed because it’s not convincing, and find it ridiculous; and among the only people (who) we didn’t hear giggling were guys too busy feasting their eyes on an incarnation of their fantasies on screen” (Sciolino, 2013). When I learned that the director and both two actresses are straight, this makes more sense.

Director Kechiche labels himself as an unconditional devotee of realism. “I don’t want it to look like life,” he says of his cinema. “I want it to actually be life. Real moments of life, that's what I’m after” (Romney, 2013). But at the same time, he also admitted that his purpose is to idealize the female body (Sciolino, 2013). He explained, “Like paintings, or sculptures” (Romney, 2013). Ms. Seydoux counters the Kechiche’s use of the so-called real lesbian sex scene as an eyebrow-raising directly. When the reporter used “several unsimulated sex scenes” to ask Ms. Seydoux, she interrupted immediately, “Be careful, they are simulated. We were wearing prostheses” (Sciolino, 2013). Ms. Exarchopoulos used the word manipulation to describe the director's guidance for them. For both actresses, the filming process was horrible and indicated that they would no longer work with Kechiche (Stern, 2013).

It can be said that this film is successful in regards to cultural diversity as brand management. This movie has received a high honor, people should know it is the first film to have the Palme d'Or awarded to both the director and the (two) lead actresses (RFI, 2013). Not only that, but the film also performed not bad at the box office. It can be said that this is a work that has gained a good reputation and attracted the audience through brand management of cultural diversity. But as Kohnen mentioned, “the strategic use of LGBTQ content to signify edginess has not disappeared” (2015). Lesbian movies, especially those including so-called real lesbian sex scenes, are not only targeting the group that supports LGBTQIA and cultural diversity but also a straight (especially male) group who wants to satisfy their own sexual fantasies. Although shocked, it is important to know that Lesbian has been the most popular porn search term for porn sites (Lufkin, 2016).

So I have been thinking about whether lesbian movies are the most cost-effective thing. Due to the brand management of cultural diversity, LGBTQIA films can gain a good social reputation, because more or less they are showing/facilitating the spread of cultural diversity. On the other hand, this type of film caters to the Queer Market, as we mentioned the homonormativity, “depoliticized gay culture anchored in domesticity and consumption” (Duggan, 2002). In addition, a large number of heterosexual groups who want to satisfy their sexual fantasies/curiousness are attracted to the cinema.

The toughest point is that, as mentioned above, the director's purpose is to idealize the female body. And the two actresses clarified their heterosexual identity immediately after the processing of the film. Everyone has made a profit from this lesbian-themed film, but everyone is trying to getting rid of any suspicious of homosexuality identity after making a profit.

As an Asian (I used to believe myself as) straight woman, I have to admit that this film started to make me doubt my own sexual orientation. When I was watching this film, I would involuntarily introduce myself to Adèle’s role, and I found Emma to be a very charming woman. In the film, Emma's hair is blue in the first half and light brown in the second half of the film. The blue hair period is the sweetest time for her and Adèle. I think that Emma was really attractive at that time. And the second half with the light brown hair is the period that her relationship with Adèle is about to burst. I think this is why the film's name is Blue Is The Warmest Color. In fact, in the original comics, all the scenes are black and white, except that Emma's hair is blue, and the intuitive contrast that comic can present can more express this theme.

I have always lived in a heterosexual culture community. The heteronormative in Asian culture is more ingrained than Western culture, so I never thought about my sexual orientation. It’s like I also cannot figure out the sexual orientation of Adèle. She did not show any love for women other than Emma, and she had an affair with a man, not a woman. By watching this film, I am rethinking whether it is a wise choice to define sexual orientation based on gender. I love a person because of the gender of that person, or because that person is that person.

In general, I would think this film is a good movie, especially from the contribution that made me rethink my own identity. But when I know more about the story behind this film, the harder it is for me to evaluate it from the work itself. Everything became complicated when lesbian-themed movies/televisions connect with cultural diversity brand management, homonormativity, Queer Market, and even male sexual fantasy.
