The Vaselines Enter The Vaselines Number of LPs: 3 Label: Subpop Release Year on Jacket: 2009 Songs I Liked: A1 – Son Of A Gun A3 – You Think You’re A Man B2 – Molly’s Lips B3 – Teenage Superstars C1 – Sex Sux (Amen) C4 – Bitch C5 – No Hope D3 – Dum Dum D5 – Lovecraft F1 – Dying For It F5 – The Day I Was A Horse F8 – I Didn’t Know I Loved You (Til’ I Saw You Rock’N’Roll) Songs I Didn’t Like: Overall Rating: A Would You Recommend: Every write up I have read about The Vaselines says the same thing, and I won’t be any different. I found out about them through Nirvana. Two of my favorite songs on Insecticide were covers (Kurt also covered them on the Unplugged album). The Vaselines have a male and a female singer, at times it is very Sonic Youth because of it (they might have influenced Sonic Youth too IDK). That is a great thing. The music itself ranges from acoustic alternative to distortion filled punk. This album has three discs and a ton of music. It has 2 Eps, an album, demos, and 2 live concerts. I do like that it is paced out well, each EP has its own side. The album is a whole record of its own. They didn’t try to cram everything onto 2 LPs Subpop usually does a decent job, and I appreciate them for that. I figure it is easiest to look at each LP on its own. The first LP was the Son Of The Gun and the Dying For It Eps. I loved LP1 it is a great listen. LP2 is the Dum Dum album, it was a good listen but it was getting old by the end of it. LP3 is demos and live performances. Side E was the demos and Live in Bristol. It was ok, but at this point they already played several of the songs multiple times. I was over it. Side F was Live in London. This performance was better, it was faster, and it was a good mix of everything they had up to that point. This side was a good listen, the other wasn’t because it was too much of the same. Overall I think this is a great listen. It is a fantastic collection of music, and it is easy to see why they influenced Kurt Cobain. I just recommend picking and choosing the albums you listen to, because a marathon listen like this make you numb to it. If you have to listen to large chunks, stick with LP1 and LP2 and you will be happy. Spotify Link to Album: https://open.spotify.com/album/77fll3eaEH3Ktqk4mA3J7i?si=1tHaPu1yRUi94NEjQlAPyQ
