melvika but mel deciding she needs to utilize sevika's strength and/or connections in some way, so she immediately looks to figure out sevika's angle, how to approach her enticingly enough, make it worth her while... and thus becomes one of the first people to figure out that sevika's more than just some scary hired thug. that moment she first encounters the woman she's been told is/was silco's hired muscle and immediately sees how calculated sevika's entire hedonistic intimidation act is, but at the same time not even mel can see exactly what's behind the act. maybe cause for a long time, not even sevika knows. maybe cause to be a zaunite and survive is to become what sevika is presenting - she's just better at keeping it put together than most.

Things from the League of Legends game I wish were in Arcane
"Arcane is based on League of Legends, of course it was gonna be bad🤪" then how come Season 1 managed to be good? How come some of the game dialogue and lore are even better than Season 2? Season 2 took all the shit from the game that doesn't work for a high stakes adult show (shitty Marvel humour, unserious tone, characters' allegiances flip-flopping every 5 seconds, multiverse), but none of the good shit that actually would have worked.
Here are some things from the game I wish the show had used:
- Jinx talking to her guns, especially Fishbones. In the game, she imagines it speaking in a calm, pragmatic, wise voice to temper her chaoticness. Fishbones is a shark-shaped weapon. Tell me, who in Season 1 has an underwater lair, was "reborn" underwater, has a line mentioning how beautiful aquatic monsters are, and is a pragmatic presence in Jinx's life who tries to impart wisdom to her? Who in Season 1 did she make Fishbones for in the first place? She says "Just you and me, Fishbones!" in the game. Who in Season 1 tells her "it's only us"? It's insane that they didn't have her hallucinate Silco's voice from Fishbones when all the pieces were right there. The game plays it off in a lighthearted jokey way, but Season 1 already changed the tone of Jinx's character so much to make her darker and more serious than her game counterpart. They could easily have done the same with Talking Fishbones. It would been exactly the kind of dark, bizarre thing Jinx would do too. She literally made dolls of Mylo and Claggor and spoke to them. She made a doll for Vi in the AU. But no doll for Silco? Fishbones could have been that "doll".
- Jinx's pink bullet tattoos. In Season 1 she only got her blue cloud tattoos from the game leading us to believe she'd get her pink bullets in Season 2. A cool interpretation is that the blue clouds symbolize her accidentally killing her first adopted family (the monkey bomb explosion) and the pink bullets would symbolize her accidentally killing her second adopted family (Silco). Instead she never gets her full set of tattoos from the game.
- Ekko's lines in the game. Game Ekko calls Vi out for being a class traitor, abandoning Zaun, and joining the enforcers. He even tells her "one day, you'll come back to Zaun." The game literally handed the show writers the barebones of an arc on a silver platter. And they did nothing with it. Vi never mentions nor interacts with Ekko until the final episode. They could have had a falling out over her decision to join the enforcers, which would have made perfect sense and been faithful to the game. In Season 2, Ekko isn't even involved in the Piltover vs Zaun plotline which is fucking insulting. Dude shows up in the end just to convince Jinx to HELP PILTOVER of all things. Why didn't the Ekko and Jinx reconciliation happen over fighting for Zaun against Piltover, instead of for Piltover against Noxus? If the show wanted to do the "a greater common enemy bringing former enemies together" trope, and wanted Ekko and Jinx to become allies, then Piltover should have been that common enemy. Sevika even has a line saying that topside is the real enemy and all the different Zaunite factions should come together and fight Piltover, but they abandoned that plotline for Noxus + Viktor's robot army. Also, Ekko's melancholic game lines to Jinx could have done more for main universe Timebomb than a million shitty AU fanfictions could - "Man, I miss you so much" and "I had a crush, until you started talking to the gun".
- Warwick's lines in the game. And his lines to Vi. I talk about it more here and here, but to summarize, his character in the game is an intriguing look into how Piltover's oppression of Zaun breeds hatred and violence in its people (the monster you created). Warwick could have been a reflection of Vander's dark past that Season 2 pretended doesn't exist, and of Vi's potential future if she continues down her path. He should have played a major role in Vi's arc considering his game self calls her out for becoming an enforcer and abandoning Zaun. Bonus points if Vi is the one to kill him. Jinx killed Silco but Vi doesn't get to kill Warwick, symbolically killing her rage and inner demons and setting her father free from his torment? Even Jinx has to do that for her? Bruh, they didn't bother to give Vi ANYTHING substantial to do.
- Game Viktor. Just Game Viktor. With his focus on machinery and steel and function over form instead of magic. Why the fuck did they make him a godlike mage in the show. In the original lore, the Church of the Glorious Evolved are not affiliated with Viktor, instead worshipping him from afar. Game Viktor doesn't pay attention to them. In the show, Viktor founds and leads the cult himself. Then chills with them the entire time while Piltover cracks down on Zaun, abuses citizens, and arrests people with no proper cause. Why doesn't Viktor have anything to say about all this? He opposed Piltover's aggression towards Zaun in Season 1, and in Season 2 when it's multiplied by a 100, he just kicks back and relaxes with his worshippers?

I won't lie I think one of the only parts that frustrates me about where the show went is that we never got a Sevika character arc. Outside of me thinking she's hot, she's just such an intriguing character to me and I wish we would have gotten to learn more about her, especially since the only real info about her past that we have is that she didn't get along with her dad all that well, and that's only because she said it herself in season one.
EDIT: I think I'm also pissed off because the official Arcane twitter page put up her poster with the caption "Sevika's story continues in act three" and I got all excited just for her not to speak, like dont do that to me, the fuck?

arcane s2 spoilers. another caitlyn critical rant because i have Thoughts and i'm Annoyed
can i just say i'm soooo annoyed at how the narrative treats ambessa as the worst most irredeemable person and the one true villain of the series while caitlyn who spent half of s2 as a tyrant in both piltover and zaun is just let off the hook despite them working together for most of that time.
"she didnt MEAN it" but she did do it. she terrorized the people of zaun, she was complicit. yes ambessa was using her but that's because she was so easy to use! ambessa barely had to do much manipulation, barely had to lift a finger for caitlyn to give the green light on all the tactics the militant regime used.
now, see, it's not like i'm AGAINST caitlyn redeeming herself. i'm not. i was ready for her to go down a dark path and for vi to pull her out of it. my gripe is with how it was executed. caitlyn did not deserve it, she didn't DO anything to actually work towards redemption and getting vi's forgiveness.
also caitlyn fans being so ready to just push all the blame onto ambessa is so frustrating because you know what. ambessa is an interesting character. and caitlyn's relationship with ambessa was also super interesting because it paralleled the mother-daughter relationships of caitlyn & counselor kiramman, and mel & ambessa. ambessa elevated caitlyn's character from something akin to stale bread dressed in a girlboss copaganda fit, to something actually intriguing to watch.
but of course all that is thrown away because the show apparently didn't have time to do a full caitlyn redemption arc, which would've further developed the character, while simultaneously unpacking the damage she did to zaun and to vi&jinx's relationship. but nope we didn't get that! instead she betrays ambessa off-screen for the sake of a stupid plot twist and because "she was loyal to vi all along!!!! that's the power of love!!!!" and like i love a good sappy wholesome "power of love" moment, but this wasn't it, man. this came out of nowhere and it just felt so jarring, automatically undoing all of caitlyn's development thus far (a negative arc is still character development). and not only does it somehow just undo all the damage she's done, but also just... brushes past it??? like that girl was wearing a whole ass villain cape and everything and we're just... gonna brush past that? okay.
and look. the thing is, i wouldn't be AS salty about this if the ENDING, at least, was different. like maybe if sevika got a word in during any part of act 3. or if the people of zaun were given more agency in rising up against her regime. OR MAYBE if jinx didn't have to DIE in order for CAITLYN to get her happy ending with vi. and yes, maybe jinx didn't actually die and she did manage to survive, but the people who love and care about her (sevika and ekko) are still left behind, unhappy, while she (presumably) left aboard the airship to who-knows-where. and as a side note i would also like to add that ekko is the fucking boy saviour, the MVP of the entire show who saved EVERYONE from viktor, yet he didn't get a happy ending but was left sitting there all alone, not even with his band of firelights! like come on!
but getting back on subject. the story didn't even show vi properly mourning or acknowledging the loss of her sister in the epilogue. instead more focus is given to caitlyn. no mention of jinx in that last caitvi scene. instead it focuses on caitvi's relationship ("are you still in this fight, violet? / "i'm the dirt under your nails, cupcake. nothing is gonna clean me out." even the episode title is taken from that line). season 2 featured caitlyn as a more major protagonist than vi, with the opening episode and even the closing scenes centering on her. and that, ultimately, is where so much of my frustration towards her character is coming from. it feels like the story of two sisters, vi & jinx, was superceded by caitlyn, and what was initially assumed to be paranoia-induced jealousy from jinx towards caitlyn in season 1 suddenly makes sense. caitlyn entered the picture and immediately jinx is forced out of it, in so many ways.

some thoughts on act 1 so far. huge long ramble. spoilers obv. do share your own, would love to hear other perspectives or additions!
didn't really come in with much expectations, was just gonna receive openly whatever the writers had planned, so that's why i don't have much strong opinions for the most part 😭but on a story perspective, i do have some thoughts.
story-wise
considering act 1 was obviously going to be a huge shift from a first season and something that's meant to set up 6 other episodes, i'm still definitely feeling that the pacing could've been better, slower. the show's always had such tight pacing which has served it for the most part but it can also cut off moments where perhaps the moment could've been served better had it been a bit more drawn out.
s2's act 1 feels much faster-paced but my hope for the season overall isn't entirely tanked. could go several ways. on it's own, it feels a bit jarring, lots of information is being given in such short time. but also we don't know how that will stand once act 2 and act 3 are out. the latter acts could be more drawn out, justifying act 1's pacing, it could be even more squished, which would suck.
love how the characters given have only grown more important, the spotlight on them becoming more emphasised, even side-characters like salo seeming to have more presence this time around. also really like how already present characters were utilised to aid more prominent characters (elora, amara, huck, smeech). so i'm on the fence about officer nolen. it could've been an opportunity to develop a character that was already present in s1, so it's not all these new things compiling (which can further that sense of things going to fast) but more so building on what was already there.
there's also smth about how the dialogues were written that... idk, something about it isn't quite hitting. especially with jinx's. can't quite point out what. also "affection" holding jayce and viktor in the past???? kill me, my heart gave up after that point. the writers can definitely hurt you if they want 😭
animation, it's amazing, show-stopping, bound to be. never doubted fortiche. i always expect them to deliver, and they always delivers. quintuplets this time even. i particularly love smeech's design, how he moves, makes my skin crawl and i love watching it.
characters
the character arcs... also on the fence about that. same thought about it as the act's pacing. it's certainly quite quick, i wonder how it would've gone had they slowed it down. but i'd want to see act 2 and 3 in order to shape a better opinion on that, since act 1 obv stands to serve the latter acts, as well as carrying the story over from s1. that's a lot of weight, so that's my benefit of the doubt.
looking forward to how ambessa will affect the story. she's already such an intriguing character to begin with, and a good call too to introduce her in s1, so the audience gets that time to acclimate (what they should've done to other characters that may be of greater impact on s2, whoever those will be, but that's neither here nor there).
with caitlyn, i was never as invested in her story on s1, but act 1's changing my mind on that. it lowkey feels like a madness arc but in a... facism direction, as opposed to jinx's psychological madness. does make them interesting oppositions. curious to see how the writers will handle that, if they handle it at all.
jinx's change feels a little bit out of nowhere, i wish the writers would have explored the in between stage of this s2 jinx and s1's ep9 jinx. it was foreshadowed briefly in that apathetic look she had after silco died and the scenes after that, but how it was reintroduced in s2's act 1 feels like it developed further but we weren't shown. she's far softer in this s2 too, as far as act 1 shows, still deranged but far less, and it would've been nice if that progression was shown more rather than just the skip.
kinda liking how jinx and sevika buddied up, though also a bit rushed. they were so antagonistic towards each other in s1 that i feel they deserved something a bit more than what was given in this act. i can understand it from sev's pov, her loyalties lie with zaun - anything that fucks that up will be on her hitlist, and we know jinx can definitely fuck things up, and if jinx stops doing that, i can see sev acquiescing and being more open to allieship. but from jinx's side, she kind of just relented? the whole "something i could fix" thing has an interesting idea, maybe she just wants to stop fucking things up and sevika is a start? but it wasn't exactly explored all that much either. no idea. would love to hear other perspectives on this
as for the little girl, it’s definitely setting up that found family trope. i do worry that they’ll just jump to, like, ‘and now they have a deep bond and care a lot about each other because they spent time together!’ but then not show us. if they do, and it’s done well, that would be an interesting analysis. but more often than not it doesn’t go that well. another worry is that she'll be treated like sky - introduced just to die shortly after. however it is appearing like the kid will have more importance while she's alive, so that's great, but also,, don't tell me you envision her making it out alive 😭 i just hope it won't be rushed
jayce, my guy was struggling fr. he's remained consistent with his late s1 self which feels like a nice anchor, familiar, and i think they handled him better. though i suspect that that may be because he may not have as much of a larger arc ahead of him, he's got the divorce lined up for him, fighting for piltover, qualms with the arcane, not much else. it would be fun to see if they do add something else. looove how it really built upon who he was in s1 while introducing hints of who he might become later on, really love. one thing jayce does well and ik u can count in him for is his huge heart, so im glad that has maintained. i'm interested in how the writer's will go about crafting his conflict against the arcane or hexthing, whatever vik's wielding, since during act 1 he's still very much up for it.
viktor's change feels a bit more sudden, slightly jarring for me, but i'm not entirely opposed and i do kinda like it. to be fair it's untreaded ground he's headed towards, and we're not entirely sure what exactly the fuck the hexcore/arcane is affecting him. currently it feels a bit too quick, that jesus arc came outta nowhere (which isn't to say i don't like it, i absolutely love vik's jesus arc, but that's not as unbiased, i'm up for anything with this man), but it could be explained in the latter acts which will put his act 1 arc into better perspective. i'm hoping for that. love this seemingly overpowered man arc he's on, and i wonder how that'll be tackled later on, and jayce's reaction to it.
definitely feel like the arcane is manipulating him through guilt and grief, that’s how i’m perceiving sky’s part in his jesus arc anyway. vik’s whole aim for the most part of s1 was to help people, and so the guilt he would feel if he opposed those aims would be great. enough to be manipulated by it? we’ll see in the coming weeks.
the whole thing with the arcane being defiant because they keep testing/prodding it, i’m not entirely sure about. i don’t recall any seeds of that idea planted in s1 (though correct me if im wrong) so it feels like it sprung out of nothing, but we’ll see how that holds up after the next acts come out. i do like how the arcane's being treated like a character, that's interesting. even in s1 there were hints of that, and it seems like they're only building up on that, especially so if in fact vik's being controlled by the arcane in some manner.
mmmm that's all for my thoughts on, will definitely revisited after act 2 and 3 are out. no thoughts yet on mel, her real arc seems to only have started, but i'm intrigueeed. if it's anything arcane/magic related at all, im all up for it.
also i fucking screamed when silco sank 😭 look me in the eye and tell me they didn't show us that exact framing in s1 😭 THEY WERE TELLING US HOW HE'D BE BURIED SHUT UP

okay some thoughts after 2 rewatches:
i LOVE that there's a ton to analyse. the play with symbolism, colours, metaphors, i am HERE for that shit!!! really enjoying reading all these theories
the plots are intriguing and there's not one that i'm not particularly interested in. especially ambessa proved herself to be a strong character apart from just being the muscle mommy that happened to be related to one of the councillors. this woman properly terrifies me now.
caitlyn is making really questionable decisions and i understand why the writers said that many won't be happy about what's to come. being willing to shoot at a kid and hurting vi seemed... very extreme and i'm not sure if i can "excuse" this with her poor grieving process clouding her judgement. i hope she gets a well-made redemption arc because it's going to be tough with the path she's currently taking. not everything can be rekindled and forgiven.
also, with how all over the place she was acting, the kiss felt off for me? at its core it was VERY welcome, don't get me wrong, but it felt strangely misplaced — i don't know, i have to think about this more.
the pacing is WAY faster than in season 1 and i must say i'm not a fan of this because
the passing of time wasn't clear at all
characterization fell short and was quite unbalanced. sevika showed more characteristic progress than vi?? hm
it was impossible to catch everything on the first watch because it was just SO much information and plot thrown at you, plus sometimes i just want to LOOK at things. The Grey for example really flew over my head initially. somehow didn't understand caitlyn and her crew tinkered with the ventilation system because i was focused on both the gorgeous art style and the song lyrics of the sequence
i also felt like we were switching scenes a lot, as in, lotsa jumps between the different plot lines. which, i get it, can be a stylistic choice to induce the feeling of an approaching climax or mimic the stress the characters are feeling, but here it was rather just chaotic and threw my attention from one side to the other. not sure if that was only my perception, though.
i also have no idea how they intend to wrap up all these individual stories in just 6 more episodes. i HOPE it doesn't stay as crammed and ends with a ton of loose ends, but i wouldn't be surprised if it does.
in the end, i kinda want to wait until the entire season is out and i can put everything into perspective. call me a coward but i don't want to jump to conclusions or settle on an opinion after seeing just a third of the episodes. i also had three years to craft the perfect season 2 in my head, soooo
on a last note, visually we got served a 5-star meal. especially the 2D animations. the lil smoke that said "poow"? the glitching hextech gear? the effects of sevika's new arm? chef's kiss. also the micro expressions and fight choreographies are out of this world, fuck. i'm gonna have a bunch of new wallpapers from this arc alone
next week we'll see pit fighter vi and i am shaking in my seat as we're speaking. also, warwick. i'm reeeeeally hyped for warwick
just watched arcane season 2 and omg. i'm gonna fucking watch it again right now
