Mile High Grab Bag 42/64: Seventy Six #2 (2008)

The perennial lack of engagement on Tumblr makes it difficult to tell if you didn't miss these posts when I paused for a while, or just never noticed them in the first place. Of course, given that the nature of the grab bags means we don't see much of automatic reblog characters like Douglock or Cassandra Cain, a number of you might be following along without saying so.

Anyhow, we're in the Image Comics part of the bag.

This black and white miniseries has two stories set in the year 1976, and are heavily influenced by the action movies of that period.

"Jackie Karma" by B. Clay Moore and Ed Tadem, is set in New York City. Two kung fu heroes of the 1960s come out of retirement when an old foe resurfaces.

In a Chinese-styled meditation chamber, Master Holmes is interrupted by his servant Carlton. Carlton uses some elliptical language to reveal that Jackie Karma is back in town.

Jackie, legal name John Carmichael, tracks down his old partner Marcus King, who's become a community activist. Jackie's day job is attorney, by the way. He explains that Gil Gunn is apparently out of prison and not in the "got rehabilitated and won parole" way.

Over at a mob meeting, a man named Gino reports to his boss that tainted heroin is hitting the streets, along with some new pills that cause derangement, which is cutting into the mob's usual rackets.

After the meeting, Gino is waylaid by Gil Gunn, who is the one behind the tainted drugs. Gil wants Gino to be his partner in this, and isn't taking no for an answer.

Karma and King visit a Chinese coffee shop to further discuss the situation. This allows a young woman to eavesdrop.

Gino, full name Gino Valentino, calls a man named Sam Jones. Jones is irritated as he was in the middle of coitus, but Gino's willing to pay extra for protection. "I can lose the money, Sam. My life I'd like to keep a little longer."

Karma and King are accosted on the street by Master Holmes and "the Sabaki Boys." Looks like a fight is about to start!

"Cool" by Seth Peck and Tigh Walker is set in Los Angeles. Two low-rent bounty hunters, who met as soldiers in the Vietnam War, are assigned to track down a stripper named Cherry Baum.

As this chapter opens, the white one wonders if he's ever seen Cherry dance before, as he frequents the club she works at. They decide to split up to cover more ground.

Cherry's at a friend's pad, snorting cocaine. Turns out the reason she's being hunted is that she has a suitcase full of money she inherited from her recently murdered boyfriend, who stole it from someone named Mr. Navarro. She's going to ditch Mark's car and then needs a ride back to her apartment. (She hasn't realized yet that the crook she ran over knows her name.)

Jimmy Length is a porn actor turned hitman; we first see him looking and sounding like he's having sex, but he's actually working out in the nude. He takes a call from Mr. Navarro, presumably for murder work. Then we find out there's a woman tied up in his apartment and things are not looking good for her.

The white bounty hunter goes to Mark's apartment, which is being searched by a skinny dude who is vocally worried about Mark. He spills about there being money involved before realizing that the bounty hunter isn't from the mob.

The black bounty hunter canvasses some neighborhood kids near Cherry's apartment. They haven't seen anything unusual, but are aware of what she does for a living. Cherry's apartment has already been tossed, but while the bounty hunter is looking it over, he's accosted by Jimmy Length.

There's an interview feature about Cool, which reveals that the bounty hunters are named Pete Walker and Leon Campbell. Not sure which is which. Also, soundtracks for both Cool and Jackie Karma.

Both of these stories are like watching random fifteen minute sequences of Seventies action flicks. Mostly exposition heavy and setting up combat sequences in the next chapter. I was also strongly reminded of British comics of the early 1980s due to the format and art. Cool is sleazier than Karma.

Mildly enjoyable, don't know if it's ever been collected.

i have a cake with too many candles, n i have a pie with too many sides. i have a thought with too many angles- that quivers and trembles and much more besides.

i have a think with too many people and pour petrol over too many hands raised in Promethean heat and worship a combustion of treetops and kestrel cans

i was in an eyelid and batting at a blue moon, who told me to run to the vanilla tree (with a whisper that tastes of sweet pea, and a tinge, the bumble of bumble bee, a heathen repression of black charity- yes,this is what the moon said to me) and as my legs took me to where I was going they buckled and chuckled at all I could be.

they led through a haze of thick mayonnaise, and laughed as i faffed through the hands all ablaze, who hold all my spine, all my legs all my bones, my extremities burned and I heard the tree’s moans-

The tree was mangled, tired and depressed, it fatigued in it’s need for some sleep, some rest, It became a candle and melted in the sun- and let out a smell that was felt in all lungs (and the ethereal was less scream and more hum, and they stirred the smell in their ever-deep well, it was smelt by the trees, the clementine, the plum, and mixed to a spirit of plasma and rum.)

Astrofissures of spritz in the stars, The spray of the mongoose(!), the chariot of Mars, the fear of the ray gun, the call and respond- that screams to Pluto, who screams a Second, of

Pink sticky foam, bubbled, brown, black, a cholesterol dream, an arrest cardiac- u pick up from the ground, it is something you lack, and u eat all the foam, in its pink/in its black, a bleak pleasuredome, u Defend u Attack, as ur spine’s colonised by a fructose Carrack, it clings to your ribcage, ur outrage ur back, and ur mind is ur brain and ur blood is ur smack.

And u ingest the Vanilla sad story of yore, and ur blessed as u bask in the star’s blissful score, as it plays the rumba! of the black tar hands That burn deep to your stomach, that understand,

and ur pink sticky foam leaves u tired and alone, deconstructs ur constructs and hollows ur bones, and u dream in the haze, the bumble of the mumble, the opiate ballet, the death-marke & rumble. Syrup curdles, crystallised and created, forms in the morn, fucked up, masturbated, now u are a cake with too many candles, a happyday thought that was too much to handle.

(I'll post the nsfw one in a lil bit when I'm feeling more- yeah.) I started a list of things we can do while you're here this time! Depending on the car situation, anyway. So: -actually visit a museum because the natural science one is fantastic -aquarium maybe? it's near the museum district so it wouldn't be a hassle -galveston p2 because it was gross out last time and we didn't get to walk on the beach or check out moody gardens -go on a legit date (movie maybe? though we definitely wouldn't even end up watching the movie would we oops) -perhaps another out of town trip: san antonio? that may be too far, i've only been there like twice so i don't exactly remember -watch scrubs & twhl & hamilton & whatever else (cough there were several episodes of parks and rec that i wanted to watch with you :( cough) -rings !!! aaaaa !!!
