Spoiler: Boosters Tower
Is the only place in MarioRPG with mass production model weaponry, *AND* machines as monsters, that isn't related to Smithy in anyway.
Or is it?
Preface this with the idea that I think Booster is Wario, but they couldn't give him that name in game for various reasons, which I'm about to extrapolate on.
Booster is the seventh of his line, all of which look like knock-off Marios, and Booster himself looks suspiciously like the game's Final Boss. The "Seventh" is an important number here, because the title of the original MarioRPG was "Legend of the seven Stars". The star road didn't break into 7 pieces until the smithy gang broke it. But they broke it to take the wishes for themselves. And possibly for his son; Booster. (Unless Booster is secretly also Smithy, which is possible because after his section of the game, he vanishes mysteriously. And you never see Smithy and Booster in the same room together...)
Now, let's take a look at Boosters minions; The Snifits, Chainchomps, including one that won't follow orders but will join your team because Bowser asked. A LOT of Bob-ombs, and his two lieutenants :Knifeguy and GrateGuy.
I wanna take a second to point at GrateGuy specifically here; as a child, in those low-res claymation Mario days, he either looked like a guy sitting on a ball, several children in a trench coat, or as if his moving parts *was* the ball. And the legs were added to make him seem more human.
Possibly by Booster, possibly by somebody else who tried to make a machine look more human. Knife guy, by the way, carries around a large stock pile of mushrooms (most of which are moldy or mildewy or just rotten mush) explicitly for a game that he plays with Mario.
He's a very well paid servant who carries around rotting food to hand out as prizes. Which means hes incredibly evil, or that he doesn't understand what mold, mildew, and rot means. Like a Machine.
He's also dressed inhumanly, like a machine-made in a suit. And unlike a lot of other characters in the game, Knife Guy openly carries weapons. Not magician knives, real sharp, dangerous weapons. As if he doesn't know the inherent dangers of playing with knives.
Lastly, I'd like to point to Booster's toy collection. The only other time we see dolls like that in the game, aside from when the party is turned into them as a status effect. Is when Gaz is playing with them in Rose Town.
And the one Character who doesn't have a real(MarioRPG)-life counterpart is the Geno doll. Who gets outfitted with a finger shot. And the only other time we see a finger shot used in the game, is by smithy, the Weapon Lord himself.
Geno was a doll possessed by a being from StarRoad, who, in the Paper Mario series is often represented as tiny floating sentient stars who follow Mario around. Star Spirits, who are directly connected to the Star Pieces themselves. And the Star Kids.
Geno, is a Star Child. BTW. If you didn't know.
Using the Star roads magic, a star kid pilots the Geno Doll like a mech suit.
But why isn't this "Geno" character seen anywhere else in the Game where the dolls made represent real people?
Who does Geno represent? Does he represent anyone at all? Is he just an early prototype? Is he a Dollex or Puppox? Or, is he an early representation of Smithy himself?

I come and provide to all a system of philosophy, magick, and mysticism, which if followed shall surely be of great benefit to all beings and humans alike
As many great mystics, magicians, prophets, and adepts of yore gave gifts to us, I too bring forth for all, a simple system and way of life; this yoga of the soul, a kabbalah of western life and tradition, is, among so many things, the stone of the Wise, and I carry these words for the benefit of all, from the very Heavens themselves. I warn you all, however, that each must find for themselves the path which works for them; all roads lead to Rome, and all paths lead to the Creator - some are just twister, some more beautiful, others more painful, but in the end, we all end up in the same place. From the waters, from the airs, and from the fires, one must practice consistently, and daily; be at peace with a still and clear mind, and inflame thyself with prayer, while maintaining a healthy body, diet, and environment.
To live with virtue means to embody the very spirits and essences of the virtues thenselves; to be godly and truly divine, one must act in such a manner. And what do our actions stem from, but a mixture of our very thoughts and our environments? Nature or nurture matters not, for they are both important; it is not in any one thing that Evil lies, but in the excess, or the lack of.
With seven medicines to maintain health of body and mind we may enjoy long life, love, and live with full acceptance and Empathy for all around us, and ourselves.
Papaver somniferum, to ease the aches and pains and suffering of Life when needed; it is not wrong to partake in pleasure, and it is not wrong to choose to avoid it, yet there always comes a time for all, when we must heal, rest, and sleep.
Piper nigrum, for when one needs some spice and variety in both food and life - too much is aa harmful as too much of anything, but in the right amounts, it is a panacea of health, and a great tool of the Wise.
Cannabis sativa which enlivens the spirit and stimulate the senses, is of great benefit to most. Let the Great Herb cool your passions and body when you are too warm, and let it ignore your spirit when you are too cold.
Boswellia sacra is of great benefit to the mind and the spirits, and well enjoyed by many beings. It is excellent, among many other uses, to offer to the spirits and our ancestors, ans to Angels and Demons alike.
Camilia sinensis, is a miraculous and delicious gift from the Lord and the Gods which may be enjoyed for any purpose, and serves as a general tonic for good health of body and mind as well.
Ketamine as a substance is particularly potent and ought to be used with great care, however, it too is a divine gift from God, and miraculous healing medicine of the Soul and Mind. Use it carefully, but let nobody dictate the terms of use for any other individual. Love is the Law; Love under Will. However, this Will cannot be allowed to infringe on the freedoms and well-being of others.
Amanita muscaria, as the seventh herb and medicine, is far less harmful to the body than Ethanol, when prepared correctly. It is a magical medicine, a gift from the Earth, which allows one to see clearly, relax and sleep peacefully, and enjoy the many benefits of Ethanol, without the harmful toxicity of it.
With these seven herbs, these seven medicines and gifts, anything can be achieved, and any illness of the mind, body, or soul overcome, when used correctly.
Many other substances, chemicals, and herbs too are useful, and there is nothing without virtue; however, these are the seven which I personally used to heal myself, and perform many great miracles and wonders, and which I have been informed to pass along to all others. Judge not your brothers and sisters, who may choose to partake in other activities, or substances, and avail yourself of this knowledge as you see fit.
With twelve tools I bound up all the many demons of the Earth, and flew to the Heavens, and found the Creator. My spirit remains in the Heavens, and the messengers of the Lord now speak through me. Stones and gems and metals of Earth, perfumes and good odors and spirits, and fluids and waters; salts, medicines, and various clothes and threads; a blade, a pen, and mystic ink, with which to inscribe and write; a deck of cards, parchment and paper, and a bowl.
With these three practices, seven medicines, and twelve tools, there is nothing which cannot be accomplished; all things are possible, with God, and God-willing. One must maintain a stone-hard faith in the face of fear, and uncertainty, and in the face of hate, and Wrath and death. Bind up these demons and the demons which plague you, vanquish them to the pits of the abyss, to the pits of Hell, and be courageous in the face of all odds; Angels come in terrifying forms, this is why they begin with "Be not afraid"; so long as you act with virtue, with Love and Mercy, and do not give into the temptations of excess and the material pleasures, one shall find peace and everlasting love and life.
Listen to these words, and follow then, my friends and followers. There is a lifetime of mystery and knowledge to be gleamed from this simple article, and I have hidden the very secrets of the Universe and All of Life within them; may the Lord guide you, and may the Love and Light of the Creator be forever with you all, my friends, followers, and family.
I shall do my best to write annotations, comments, and answer questions to any who ask, for so long as I am on this Earth, among you. Do not despair, for we still have time to repair ourselves, and heal our home, but it all begins with each and every one of us choosing to be better each day, than we were the last. This is why good health and physique even is as useless as anything else, without a healthy mind and spirit to go along with it, and why a health mind or healthy spirit needs the other two as well.
The Kingdom of God is all around us, my friends, and although there are many terrors and horrors and monsters in the World, we have the power to change the world by changing ourselves, and in doing so, we can all strive for a better future, and live harmoniously with one another. Amen. Let all who have ears hear, and let all who have eyes see, for a Prophet of the Lord, our Creator is among you, for the Creator hears your prayers and your suffering, and has sent me, to come heal and help. So let it be, and let their Will be done, forever and ever. Amen.

What the fuck are the Trials
Since the show is based on the books and not the games, and more people are more familiar with the games that the books, I thought it might be helpful to sort of officialize the posts I’ve done about specific topics in the books.
Here are the previous posts on Triss&Geralt as well as Coën
TLDR: So looking at this process, according to the books the way a Witcher becomes, well a Witcher looks like this:
There is the Choice which is the decision to become a Witcher made when you are a child
Eat a lot of magic mushrooms that give you the strength and ability Witchers are known for
Then the Trial of the Grasses which is a concoction of mutagenic elixirs injected into the bloodstream which mutates you into a Witcher
Then finally there are the Changes. This is a big step and one that requires a mage. This is when the hormones are changed and a Witcher becomes permanently sterile
then there is training until you earn your medallion and BOOM, out onto the path with you
Now, have a post about what the trials are as far as the books are concerned
It’s important to note that in the books, The Witcher are a dying breed so the Trials are really only mentioned in Blood of Elves when Ciri trains with the Witchers and the two prequels, Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish.
Let’s start out with the basics of the Trials, here is a passage from Blood of Elves where Triss is wondering why the Witchers at Kaer Morhen are being so secretive in regards to Ciri:
“It’s obvious. They want to mutate the child, subject her to the Trial of Grasses and Changes, but they don’t know how to do it. Vesemir was the only witcher left from the previous generation, and he was only a fencing instructor. The Laboratorium, hidden in the vaults of Kaer Morhen, with its dusty demi-johns of elixirs, the alembics, ovens and retorts…
None of the witchers knew how to use them. The mutagenic elixirs had been concocted by some renegade wizard in the distant past and then perfected over the years by the wizard’s successors, who had, over the years, magically controlled the process of Changes to which children were subjected. And at a vital moment the chain had snapped.
There was no more magical knowledge or power. The witchers had the herbs and Grasses, they had the Laboratorium. They knew the recipe. But they had no wizard.”
Later:
“And now they want to mutate the girl but can’t. And that might mean… They may ask me to help. And then I’ll see something no living wizard has seen, I’ll learn something no living wizard has learned. Their famous Grasses and herbs, the secret virus cultures, the renowned, mysterious recipes…”
Now, what Triss doesn’t realize is that Geralt and the others are not planning on subjecting Ciri to the trials at all but are instead trying to hide Ciri’s magical ability from Triss. They are worried she will report them to the Chapter.
Of course, until they tell Triss this, she is deeply suspicious and goes on to talk about the mushrooms Witchers have access to which are extremely unique.
“Of course, thought Triss. They’re feeding her those legendary cave saprophytes – a mountain plant unknown to science – giving her the famous infusions of their mysterious herbs to drink. The girl is developing quickly, is acquiring a witcher’s infernal fitness. Naturally, without the mutation, without the risk, without the hormonal upheaval. But the magician must not know this. It is to be kept a secret from the magician. They aren’t going to tell me anything; they aren’t going to show me anything.”
Later:
“I don’t give a fig for your trust, witchers. There’s cancer out there in the world, smallpox, tetanus and leukaemia, there are allergies, there’s cot death. And you’re keeping your “mushrooms”, which could perhaps be distilled and turned into life-saving medicines, hidden away from the world. You’re keeping them a secret even from me, and others to whom you declare your friendship, respect and trust. Even I’m forbidden to see not just the Laboratorium, but even the bloody mushrooms!”
Triss as a mage has extreme bias against the Trials and for good reason! Most of the populace doesn’t have access to any information on the Trials outside of vague ideas but Mages have access to first hand accounts such as this from Blood of Elves:
“On the third day all the children died save one, a male barely ten. Hitherto agitated by a sudden madness, he fell all at once into deep stupor. His eyes took on a glassy gaze; incessantly with his hands did he clutch at clothing, or brandish them in the air as if desirous of catching a quill. His breathing grew loud and hoarse; sweat cold, clammy and malodorous appeared on his skin. Then was he once more given elixir through the vein and the seizure it did return. This time a nose-bleed did ensue, coughing turned to vomiting, after which the male weakened entirely and became inert.
For two days more did symptoms not subside. The child’s skin, hitherto drenched in sweat, grew dry and hot, the pulse ceased to be full and firm – albeit remaining of average strength, slow rather than fast. No more did he wake, nor did he scream.
Finally, came the seventh day. The male awoke and opened his eyes, and his eyes were as those of a viper…”
~Carla Demetia Crest, The Trial of Grasses and other secret Witcher practices, seen with my own eyes, manuscript exclusively accessible to the Chapter of Wizards
When most people think of the Trials, they are thinking similarly to Queen Calanthe in Sword of Destiny.
Here is what Calanthe says to Geralt when talking about what he might do with his child surprise:
“You are astonished,’ she stated. ‘Well, I’ve studied a little. Since Pavetta’s child has the chance of becoming a witcher, I went to great pains. My sources, Geralt, reveal nothing, however, regarding how many children in ten withstand the Trial of the Grasses. Would you like to satisfy my curiosity in this regard?’
‘O Queen,’ Geralt said, clearing his throat. ‘You certainly went to sufficient pains in your studies to know that the code and my oath forbid me from even uttering that name, much less discussing it.’
Calanthe stopped the swing abruptly by jabbing a heel into the ground. ‘Three, at most four in ten,’ she said, nodding her head in feigned pensiveness.
‘A stringent selection, very stringent, I’d say, and at every stage. First the Choice and then the Trials. And then the Changes. How many youngsters ultimately receive medallions and silver swords? One in ten? One in twenty?”
Later Calanthe asks Geralt:
“Do you believe a Child of Destiny would pass through the Trials without danger?’
‘We believe such a child would not require the Trials.’
‘One question, Geralt. Quite a personal one. May I?’
He nodded.
‘There is no better way to pass on hereditary traits than the natural way, as we know. You went through the Trials and survived. So if you need a child with special qualities and endurance… Why don’t you find a woman who… I’m tactless, aren’t I? But I think I’ve guessed, haven’t I?’
‘As usual,’ he said, smiling sadly, ‘you are correct in your deductions, Calanthe. You guessed right, of course. What you’re suggesting is impossible for me.’
‘Forgive me,’ she said, and the smile vanished from her face. ‘Oh, well, it’s a human thing.’
‘It isn’t human.’
‘Ah… So, no witcher can—’
‘No, none. The Trial of the Grasses, Calanthe, is dreadful. And what is done to boys during the time of the Changes is even worse. And irreversible.”
Later:
“The risks are too great,’ Geralt said quickly. ‘As you said. At most, four out of ten survive.’
‘Dammit, is only the Trial of the Grasses hazardous? Do only potential witchers take risks? Life is full of hazards, selection also occurs in life, Geralt. Misfortune, sicknesses and wars also select. Defying destiny may be just as hazardous as succumbing to it. Geralt… I would give you the child. But… I’m afraid, too.’
Then in The Last Wish, Geralt describes his own experiences with The Trials:
“Kaer Morhen…That's where the likes of me were produced. It's not done anymore; no one lives in Kaer Morhen now. No one but Vesemir. Who's Vesemir? My father. Why are you so surprised? What's so strange about it? Everyone's got a father, and mine is Vesemir. And so what if he's not my real father? I didn't know him, or my mother. I don't even know if they're still alive, and I don't much care.
“Yes, Kaer Morhen. I underwent the usual mutation there, through the Trial of Grasses, and then hormones, herbs, viral infections. And then through them all again. And again, to the bitter end. Apparently, I took the changes unusually well; I was only ill briefly. I was considered to be an exceptionally resilient brat…and was chosen for more complicated experiments as a result. They were worse. Much worse. But, as you see, I survived. The only one to live out of all those chosen for further trials. My hair's been white ever since. Total loss of pigmentation. A side effect, as they say. A trifle.
“Then they taught me various things until the day when I left Kaer Morhen and took to the road. I’d earned my medallion, the Sign of the Wolf's School. I had two swords: silver and iron, and my conviction, enthusiasm, incentive and…faith. Faith that I was needed in a world full of monsters and beasts, to protect the innocent. As I left Kaer Morhen, I dreamed of meeting my first monster. I couldn't wait to stand eye to eye with him. And the moment arrived.”
So looking at this process, according to the books the way a Witcher becomes, well a Witcher looks like this:
There is the Choice which is the decision to become a Witcher made when you are a child
Eat a lot of magic mushrooms that give you the strength and ability Witchers are known for
Then the Trial of the Grasses which is a concoction of mutagenic elixirs injected into the bloodstream which mutates you into a Witcher
Then finally there are the Changes. This is a big step and one that requires a mage. This is when the hormones are changed and a Witcher becomes permanently sterile
then there is training until you earn your medallion and BOOM, out onto the path with you
This is why it’s such a big deal that Triss was brought to Kaer Morhen. Without a mage, someone cannot become a full Witcher and Triss believed that was why she was there. Of course, this wasn’t true but it’s a valid concern to have.
One thing I want to note, there is absolutely NOTHING in the text that says that being a Witcher is limited to any sort of gender boundary. The fact that Triss so readily jumped to Ciri becoming a Witcher and the fact that Geralt didn’t specify boys until he was talking about the sterilization process...well, there is a likelihood female Witchers actually existed.
Again, in the books Witchers are a dying breed and you can literally count on one hand the number of Witchers we meet. Of course, considering mages are the ones who made Witchers, it makes sense that female Witchers are either strongly discouraged, banned or simply not talked about.
One big point Triss has against Ciri’s training is that she won’t “develop” correctly like a woman “should” due to the mushrooms and harsh training and considering how so many northern mages place importance on beauty I could definitely see mages not wanting to have female Witchers, considering it a “perversion”.
Just a fun thought I often have about the books that I haven’t seen anyone point out.
So overall, here is what the books have to say about the Trials, it’s a touch different from the games but I find this very fascinating and interesting. Let me know if you want me to do a specific topic or relationship next, but for now, thanks for reading!

Wicked Witch Murder by Leslie Meier
With planning the town's annual Halloween Party, the drought wreaking havoc on her garden, and her brood of four children, Lucy Stone's got her hands full this fall. As the air turns crisp and the trees blaze red and gold in the tiny town of Tinker's Cove, Maine, a newcomer arrives who seems to suit the Halloween season. Diana Ravenscroft has just opened Solstice, a charming little shop featuring candles, crystals, jewelry, and psychic readings. But after an unnervingly accurate reading by Diana, Lucy starts to get more than a little spooked. Then there's the dead body Lucy finds, way up on one of the old logging roads behind her house. The deceased is identified as Malcolm Malebranche, a seemingly harmless magician who worked at children's birthday parties. When it turns out that Diana knew the murder victim, Ike Stoughton, a prominent local businessman, starts a campaign against Diana, blaming 'the witch' for everything from the unseasonal dry spell to his wife's illness and his pumpkins' lack of plumpness. But Lucy's not so sure that Ike himself is innocent. Still, as the town Halloween party approaches, Lucy's more concerned about the costume competition, pin-the-nose-on-the-pumpkin, and baking three dozen orange cupcakes and Beastly Bug cookies. But as the October moon rises, a killer plans a lethal celebration of his own and Lucy's the guest of honor.
This is the sixteenth volume in the “Lucy Stone” series.

The Pyramid of the Magician
I first visited the Maya ruins of Uxmal in March of 1995. It was an empowering, transformational journey of self-discovery -- the culmination of a lifelong dream. The archaeological site is located about 50 miles south of Merida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. Uxmal was the greatest metropolitan and ceremonial center in the Yucatan during the Late Classic Period, flourishing between the seventh and tenth centuries. It was a seat of power in the southern Puuc region, the low range of hills in the otherwise flat lowland forests of the Yucatan. The city is home to two large pyramids and various temples, plazas and a ball court. Ancient raised roads called sacbes connect the structures, and also were built to other cities in the area such as Chichen Itza. The majestic temples of Uxmal are unique in their type because they were built on various levels and their facades are notable for the intricate stone latticework. The city's limestone structures have ornate carvings, friezes and sculptures embedded in the architecture.
The Pyramid of the Magician is the first building a visitor encounters when entering the ceremonial area of Uxmal. The pyramid stands out from other Maya structures because of its rounded corners, considerable height (115 ft), steep slopes and unusual elliptical base. I walked to the base of the pyramid and made a tobacco offering to the temple guardians, seeking permission to enter the shrine. I climbed the steep steps of the east staircase to the temple at the summit, known as the House of the Soothsayer. The elongated temple has an entrance on each side of the wide stairway. Each door of the temple represents the mouth of a cave leading into the heart of the sacred creation mountain. Inside the sanctum of the cave sits the portal that leads to the spirit world.
I entered the carved stone temple to find three ornate vision chambers. I sat cross-legged on the floor of the central chamber to meditate. I closed my eyes and stilled my mind by focusing on my breath as I inhaled and exhaled. I invoked the Vision Serpent, the Maya deity who serves as a gateway to the spirit realm. I asked for insight into the origins of Uxmal. This is what happened:
In my mind's eye, I could see into the distant past. I saw Plumed Serpent (the Maya creator deity) and three lightning deities, known as Chaac, K'awiil and Yaluk, create the Earth out of the primordial sea and populate it with animals. They wanted to create human beings with hearts and minds who could keep the days of the calendar, but their first attempts failed. When these creator deities finally formed humans out of yellow and white corn who could talk, they were satisfied. They used lightning to open up the Maize Mountain, making the maize seeds available to mankind. The three lightning deities then instructed the first people in the ways of language, culture and the spiritual sciences.
The core beliefs and principles of all spiritual cultural traditions originate from the thunder, lightning and rain deities. They are the source of all religious transmission, both ancient and new. As with many Mesoamerican cultures that based their living on rain-dependent agriculture, the ancient Maya held a special devotion for the deities controlling rain. The lightning deities had a particularly strong relationship with shaman-kings because kings were considered to be rainmakers and were able to communicate with the gods of rain, lightning and storms. Kings were initiated by the rain deities, thus becoming their human counterpart.
I could clearly see that Uxmal had an ancient and ongoing use as a mystery school dedicated to preserving, protecting and perpetuating the original wisdom teachings transmitted by the lightning deities. The so-called Nunnery Quadrangle of four palatial structures to the west and behind the Pyramid of the Magician was actually used as a school for the training of shamans, priests, calendar daykeepers, astronomers and mathematicians. The Nunnery Quadrangle was a school where teachings were not only transmitted orally, but were transmitted through didactic architecture -- or architecture as a teaching tool. The Maya intentionally used geometric forms to encode their cosmology in the architecture to educate initiates about natural laws and principles. The Nunnery Quadrangle is an enduring example of the sacred science and the high wisdom of the ancient Maya.

So, this is where Henry Cavill lives. It’s a cute home, but never figured he’d be the one that would live here. I take a few deep breaths, but it doesn’t calm down my nerves. I look down at my white dress and wonder if it’s too much.
I think it’s too much.
I don’t know what I could wear to meet him. I was thinking about a short and a top, but felt that was a little bit too revealing, but come to think of it, this dress is pretty short.
I still don’t know, it looks almost wedding dressy. I shouldn’t have worn this. I stare at my Dr. Martens sandals, thanking the fashion angels that I didn’t wear the cute white heels that I initially had in mind. The only thing I would be missing, was a bouquet.
I grab my phone from my purse, to check what time it is. I was supposed to be at his place at eleven and 10:59.
I walk up to the door and press the doorbell. I hear a loud bark, causing me to jump. From behind the door, there are some stumbling noises and I can even hear his long and deep voice. The door opens with a crack and Henry greets me with a bright smile. ‘Hi Sandy.’
Holy shit, is this even legal? Why on earth is he wearing a tank top? Why would he do that to me? What is the point of doing such thing? Is he actively trying to kill me, because if so, it’s working. I can barely function anymore, since his arms are really distracting. I mean, I noticed it yesterday, I noticed it on the best video online, the PC building one, but now…
Holy shit, I can’t even seem to find the right way to greet him.
‘Are you okay, Sandy?’ he asks, when I haven’t said anything at all.
‘Yes, yes, I’m fine,’ I say, way too quickly. I clear my throat, not knowing what to say to him.
‘Please,’ he says, ‘come in.’ Henry takes a step to the side and I walk past him. He has a nicely decorated house, something that I hadn’t expected. It’s really neat too, didn’t expect that from him. ‘You want something to drink?’
‘Water would be nice.’ Kal has noticed me too, because he slowly struts towards me, his butt wiggling from side to side, while he wags his tail. ‘Hi, you big ball of floof. You are nice and clean again.’
‘It was pretty hard washing him in the tiny bath tub,’ Henry recounts and hands me a glass of cold water, with some ice cubes in it.
I clear my throat. ‘Right,’ I say. Standing in front of him shouldn’t make me feel this awkward, especially not after yesterday. I slowly managed to loosen up, but from the looks of it, we are back from square one. I feel my hands shake a bit from the nerves and my shoulders feel painfully tense.
It doesn’t help that Henry is this tall, this bulky, the complete opposite of me. I can’t seem to make eye contact with him and I curse myself for that. Why do I even feel tears out of pure frustration burning in my eyes?
‘You play video games, Sandy?’ Henry asks me. His voice is sweet and thick at the same time.
I scratch Kal behind his ear. ‘Just some Animal Crossing.’
‘Is it worth the hype?’
‘Mhm.’
‘Why do you play it?’
Though it almost feels like a third degree, I’m happy that he is asking me questions about simple things like Animal Crossing and not those deep questions about the existence of life. ‘It’s relaxing,’ I confess. ‘I need that from time to time.’ I look up again, when I know for a fact that my eyes aren’t glossy anymore.
‘So, you don’t play other games?’
I shake my head, not ready to confess that I sometimes grab my old Nintendo DS to play Style Boutique on it. I mean, I like Henry a lot, but sharing this, is one—or five—bridges too far.
‘I think you played this one,’ he says with a confident smile, while he walks to the television.
Is he wearing some perfume? I inhale again, only to be met with a mix of salty and sweet, the perfect combination for a male perfume. He didn’t wear that yesterday and I know that, because I was pretty damn close to him and you bet your ass I took a sniff.
Henry holds up two Mario Kart wheels and I see the remotes are already attached to it. ‘Look at that precious smile,’ he says and only then I realize that I’m indeed smiling. Did he just call my smile precious? ‘You want to play?’
‘Mhm.’ I walk up to the couch and place my glass on a coaster. He hands me a wheel with a remote and plops on the couch, as he starts up the Wii. There is only one more spot left for me to sit and that is right next to him.
As if Kal senses I’m hesitating, he pushes his nose against my leg and I sit down next to Henry. I feel his warmth radiating against my skin, causing me to nearly hyperventilate. His bulky arm accidentally touches me and I clear my throat, not knowing what I should do with myself. Sitting next to him on this couch, is less intimidating than standing in front of him, but it’s still pretty scary.
And I know that I shouldn’t be scared of him, but I can’t help but feel nervous. ‘Are you any good?’ I ask quietly.
‘I always kick Jackson’s ass.’ He looks to the side and our eyes meet. ‘But he is so so. Usually ends at sixth place.’
We pick out our characters (he is Donkey Kong, while I opt for baby Daisy) and once we have chosen our vehicles, Henry leaves it up to me to choose an entire cup for us to race. ‘Special Cup.’
‘You know Rainbow Road is on that cup?’ he mentions.
‘I’m aware, yes.’ I get ready for the first course: Dry Dry Ruins. ‘Good luck,’ I say to him.
‘You think I need it?’ His eyebrow is cocked and he has a smug grin on his face. Besides him getting more and more confident, he is also getting more handsome every passing minute. ‘I’m really good, Sandy.’
‘I figured. Just, don’t hold back for me, okay?’
‘Sure?’ he asks. ‘Because… I don’t want you to feel bad or anything afterwards.’ That’s adorable, oh my God.
‘I’m not a sore loser, so just race like you would usually do.’
The first race is about to start and we both watch the countdown. I push in the right button at the exact moment I know it’s going to give me a better start. Baby Daisy shoots from the 11th place to the sixth, while Henry stutters Donkey Kong to tenth place (from twelfth, if I may add so). While I soar over the roads, pushing myself to a first place, I manage to stay there for the rest of the race, making the gap between me and second place (and everyone else) bigger and bigger as the race continues. I race over the finish line, making a wheelie as I do so and I watch Henry trying to get himself from seventh to sixth place. He is muttering to himself, growing more and more annoyed.
He finally crosses the finish line. ‘I do need luck,’ he mutters. ‘Can’t believe you kicked my ass like that.’
Our second course is Moonview Highway and I snort every time Henry gets run over by a car or a truck and even drives himself off the road multiple times. He ends up in twelfth place and he is visibly frustrated now.
I shouldn’t be thinking like that, but he looks hot as hell when he’s angry like that. He could easily break the Mario kart wheel and the remote in half and knowing that he can do that, it’s something I’ll probably dream about tonight.
‘We can stop, you know,’ I say to him.
‘No, no, no,’ he says, ‘there is still a chance I can not make a total fool out of myself.’
The third course is Bowser’s Castle and this time, Henry is not a total disaster. He managed to earn himself a third place, while I’m still at number one. ‘I have come to realize and accept that I won’t be beating you, but I have to make sure I’m not losing from the computers.’
I can’t help but chuckle.
The final race is my favorite. I love Rainbow Road and know exactly how to maneuver over the roads. While I’ve crossed the finish line, Henry is still falling behind. I press the + button to pause the game. ‘Let me,’ I say and gently pull the steering wheel from his hands. I race Donkey Kong from eighth place to fourth (I’m good, but I’m not a magician. I can’t poof myself over the finish line) and when I cross the finish line, I hand him back the steering wheel. ‘Congratulations,’ I say, ‘you managed to become fifth.’
‘How on earth are you this good? This was unbelievable!’ Henry starts to laugh. ‘You were crossing the finish line twenty seconds before number two would finish, or worse, a whole minute.’
‘Back in college, we did this a lot. We even had a championship.’
‘Tell me you became first.’
I smile. ‘I did, was the best of entire UCLA, three times in a row.’
‘You never shared that on your vlogs.’
That’s cute. He really watches my videos intently, something that is insanely endearing. ‘I didn’t, no. Seemed a bit: oh look at me, you know?’
‘There is nothing wrong with flaunting,’ Henry says. ‘I mean, you do it with your dance videos right?’
I know that he has seen a lot of my videos, but thinking about him sitting on this couch, Kal pressed against his side and him watching those particular videos, makes me uncomfortable. ‘It’s barely flaunting.’
He tilts his head, I notice from the corners of my eyes. ‘You shouldn’t be this hard on yourself, Sandy,’ he says in a soft tone. ‘You are amazing, five million people and probably more watch your videos. There are a lot of people who are reading your books and…’ He doesnt finish his sentence, while he is looking for the right words to say.
‘You’ve read my books?’ I ask him.
Now he’s blushing a bit and he isn’t looking at me anymore. ‘I’ve read them,’ he admits.
I chuckle. ‘That’s sweet.’
‘But I’m not the only one who adores your videos and finish your books from cover to cover in one sitting. There are tons more and you being modest is absolutely admirable and it only makes you more likable, but there is nothing wrong with admitting that you are talented in many other ways. There is nothing wrong with saying that you are indeed amazing, because it’s true and it shows confidence.’
I bite my lip. ‘Well, fake it till you make it, isn’t that what they say?’
‘Eventually it’ll not be fake anymore.’
A deep sigh leaves my lips and I look at my hands, my thumbs fumbling together. ‘I’m sorry,’ I whisper.
‘Why are you apologizing, Sandy?’
‘That I’m like this again,’ I say. ‘I have a lot of trouble meeting new people and after yesterday…’ Why am I sharing this with him? He’ll probably think I’m the biggest whiny baby on the planet. ‘Never mind.’
‘No, no,’ Henry says, ‘tell me, please. I want to know.’
Kal sits in front of me and I place my hands on the sides of his face, scratching him. ‘I felt really good yesterday after we met, but now I feel like none of that is left. I feel like we’re starting over again. It’s just that I’m not sure what I can say to you now. And you do make it easier and I’m already less nervous and you being a total loser at Mario Kart obviously helps too… I think I don’t want you to think that I’m not having fun.’
‘Sandy,’ Henry says, ‘we’re not starting over. I’m happy that you told me this, though.’
I look up from Kal, to only notice he is already looking at me again.
‘You’re not mad?’
‘This is the last thing I should be mad about. I’m just grateful that you trust me enough to tell me this.’ He bumps his knee against mine and says: ‘I don’t think I can handle it again if I lose.’
‘Figured.’ I look around me, to find something to talk about. As if he is waiting for me to take the first step, he doesn’t say anything. ‘Do you have filming equipment?’
‘I have my phone.’
I scrunch up my nose. ‘But a camera is better. You can separate your files more easily, believe me, you’d want that.’
‘I’ll have to believe the expert on that one,’ Henry laughs.
‘Editing software?’
‘Well, I have a few computers around here, but I also have a MacBook, with iMovie on it. Heard that was pretty good. I bet you use something else.’
‘I used to use iMovie,’ I tell him, ‘but now I use Final Cut Pro. It’s around three hundred bucks, maybe a bit more.’
Henry nods. ‘So, I should buy a camera?’
‘Mhm and more.’
‘What?’
‘A hard disk, a tiny tripod, a big tripod. I was thinking you should buy like a microphone and better lightening, but that’s not really necessary. Yet.’
‘Right.’ Henry rubs his hands together and asks: ‘Want to go shopping with me?’
⟢⟡⟣
Henry spend around five hundred pounds on a camera. In a different store we bought a hard disk and indeed two tripods, though they were heavily overpriced, but Henry said that it was fine.
For the occasion, Henry put on a shirt, but this one still accentuates his arms. For a second my mind wanders to my lovely daydreams: thinking about how it would be if he’d wrap those arms around me, pulling me against his insanely strong body and kissing me on top of my head. But to not go into cardiac arrest right here and now, I decide I’ll just have to wait and dream about that when I go to sleep.
Henry is unpacking his camera and turns it on. ‘God, this is beautiful,’ he says, holding the camera up, to take a picture, while he is watching the screen. He packed everything in a blue backpack, that rests between his legs as we sit on a park bench in the shadow. He looks around him and his eyes fall on a field filled with flowers. ‘Let’s have a little photoshoot,’ he says when he turns around, to meet my eyes.
I frown. ‘What?’
‘I have to test out this camera and when I have you with me, you should be my model.’
I’m visibly confused. ‘You want to take pictures of me?’
‘Yes,’ he simply states. ‘Come on.’ He grabs his backpack and walks to the field. I follow him, but now I’m growing more nervous.
Henry Cavill wants to make pictures of me?
‘Go stand over there,’ he tells me and points to the sunflowers. I walk up to it, my legs nearly turning into jello as I stand next to the sunflower that is around my height.
He crouches down and I cock an eyebrow. ‘I’ve seen your editorials, Sandy, you’ll do amazing here. Besides, it’s just me.’
It’s never going to be just you, Henry, don’t you get that? I take a deep breath and start to pose for the pictures. He clicks his tongue, as he continues to snap pictures, telling me I’m looking beautiful, but finally the sun is frying my head. ‘Can we stop?’ I ask him. ‘I’m a sweaty mess.’
Henry starts to chuckle and looks at the screen. ‘Sure thing.’
I walk up to him, so I can look at the pictures as well and oh my God, these all look really good.
‘Wow,’ I mention. ‘Those are pretty decent.’
‘It helps when the model is easy to photograph.’
I clear my throat. What does one say to that? ‘Judging from these pictures, you’ll probably do great with filming,’ I say and together we walk back to the road again. ‘Oh look,’ I say, when Henry has put the camera in his backpack. ‘Cotton candy.’
‘Candy floss. You’re in the UK now, Sandy.’
I roll my eyes. ‘Fine, candy floss then.’
Henry tells me to wait, before he takes a few strides and he’s at the stand, buying one. I decide to watch from a far, especially when the man behind the stand wants a picture with him. I don’t want to intrude, so I wander a bit down the road, making sure that Henry can still see me.
Henry walks up to me, with a giant ball of cotton— candy floss on a stick. He plucks off some of the sweet stuff. ‘Open your mouth,’ he tells me.
If that isn’t something right out of my fantasies, then I don’t know anymore. ‘You’re going to feed me?’
‘Yeah, so your hands don’t get sticky.’ Henry has a lovely smile on his face and I wonder what is he going to be like as a boyfriend? As my boyfriend to be exact.
Would he be rough, dominant and strong, like the fanfics suggest (yes, I read those) or is he soft and cuddly? Now I do suspect a bit of both.
He could be pretty dominant. I mean, he told me to open my mouth and my first reflex was wanting to ask how far open he would’ve liked it. But on the other hand, he is also pretty soft, especially towards me. He wants me to be at ease with him, keeps giving me thoughtful compliments and he even said I was beautiful and that I’m easy to photograph.
I mean, who says that kind of stuff?
Boyfriends do right?
Rolling my eyes, I open my mouth and he feeds me some of the candy floss. He retract his hand, before my lips can reach his fingers. I shouldn’t be thinking like this. I can barely look at the man from time to time, let alone if I have these kind of impure thoughts.
‘Last time I had candy floss,’ he says, ‘was when I was sixteen. My friends laughed at me, because I wanted a pink one. I know they all taste the same, no matter what color, but pink is the color it’s supposed to be, right?’
I nod. ‘Agree,’ I say as the sugar dissolves on my tongue.
‘When was the last time you had it?’
‘I think I was eight. My dad took me out to the park, because we knew there was a stand where they sold cotton candy. We always walked passed it a few times, because my mom told us that it was really unhealthy and that your teeth would rot off if you ate it. But my mom wasn’t with us then, so we ate like three of those sticks together and we had to lie down on a park bench for about an hour, because we felt so sick.’
‘Does your mom know now?’
‘No, we’re too scared to tell her.’
Henry chuckles. ‘Are you close with your parents?’
I nod. ‘Yeah, I am. My mother reminds me every single day I should take my vitamins, to stay hydrated and not to frown, but that’s her way of showing me how much she cares. My dad texts me everyday, just telling me how his day is going.’
‘Don’t you miss them?’
‘Sometimes.’
‘Why did you even move to London?’ He plucks off some more cotton candy and brings it to my lips. Butterflies flutter inside of my stomach. I feel myself getting more relaxed around him again and him doing this, it feels so normal to us. ‘You never mentioned it in your vlogs.’
I smile, licking the sweet stuff off my lips. ‘I wanted to see the world and I earned enough money to afford it. My parents were really supportive and they wanted me to explore the world. They just hoped I was going to New York or Canada. But they are excited for me. They always watch my videos and even wake up in the middle of the night if I post in the mornings. They have been there for me since the beginning and though I’m in another continent, I feel like they are always right there.’
‘Isn’t it scary?’ he asks. ‘Being in another continent, without your parents at like twenty five?’
‘Every single day.’
We walk down the street and he continues to feed me the cotton candy. It feels weirdly intimate, but not awkwardly intimate. I open my mouth again, but he holds it a little above my reach. ‘Henry,’ I mumble, ‘not funny.’
He chuckles, lowering his hand, but I could’ve known that he was just messing with me. When I stand on my toes, he holds it further above my head and eventually eats the pink stuff himself.
I want to grab some off the stick, but even that he holds above my head. ‘Henry, come on. Don’t be mean.’
He doesn’t think this is mean, because he continues to do it, laughing the entire time. He does it again and I jump up, hoping I can reach it, but it’s hopeless.
I jump up again, but this time I fold my fingers around his forearm, pulling his strong arm with me so I can finally get a bite.
But holding his thick arm like this, it’s giving me all sorts of thoughts. He feels so strong and it’s quite intimidating of course, but something about his warm skin, is also intensely soft.
‘I knew that was there,’ he says with an almost proud smile.
‘That was there what?’ I ask, letting go of his arm.
‘That bit of assertiveness.’
My cheeks flare up. ‘Hardly.’
‘Hence the bit part.’
I glance at him, but it doesn’t last long. He can’t seem to stop smiling and to be fair, I don’t want him to. He looks breathtakingly handsome and like a perfectly sculpted human. He licks his fingers and I bet he knows exactly what that is doing to me. He throws the stick away and wants to wipe his fingers to his shirt or pants, but I stop him.
‘Wait,’ I say, before digging through my small purse, finding a tissue. ‘Here.’
‘Well prepared,’ he comments, as he takes the tissue out of my hand.
‘Always.’
He cleans his hands and throws the tissue into the bin. ‘Thanks for coming with me today.’
‘Sure,’ I say. ‘What do you want to film first?’
‘No idea yet. I want a bit of everything, you know.’
I nod. ‘Get it. When I started my channel, I was thinking about doing a fashion channel. When I thought about it, I realized I didn’t want that and wanted more lifestyle related videos.’
‘What stopped you from doing fashion videos?’
‘Not being fashionable enough.’
‘Nonsense,’ he tells me in a stern voice. ‘You look fashionable.’
I hold in a giggle that bubbles up. Dominant boyfriend Henry is definitely a concept.
‘What even made you start your channel?’
‘I wanted to romanticize my life,’ I answer. ‘I felt like I was wasting my life and realizing that ever moment is worth noting, it’ll give you tons of footage. Just keep that in mind when you film. Nothing is too boring for a vlog, as long as you edit it nicely.’
Henry nods. ‘That’s beautifully said, Sandy.’

A big Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens post
New series! Awesome! The new art style will take some getting used to and Yuga’s hair isn’t nearly stupid enough but hey, it should be fun. I like that they’re not introducing a new summoning type as well since the game already had too much of that
This post is going to be mostly speculation about the series, along with just pointing out things that might be interesting
Okay so my first point is about the new art style. I know that it’s had mixed responses but hopefully it along with the simpler character designs means more interesting and dynamic movement. The previous series tended to lack that, and it was really obvious when you compare simpler looking characters like Ai’s movement to the human characters in that show. And hey, it worked for pokemon
The trailer doesn’t exactly show us much though. And hey, I’m just a person on the internet. Maybe I’m completely wrong
Anyway onto the characters. I’m gonna link to this webpage which does a better job summarising the characters than I can. But let’s look at Yuga
This is Yuga and he’s the new protagonist. He’s an inventor and the youngest protagonist yet at 11. But I want to draw your attention to this part of the above webpage’s summary of him
He thinks the Duels run by adults currently are overly rigid and super unfun, so he develops his own rule set that he dreams of entertaining the world with
He makes up his own rules instead of using the official ones. This is exactly how 11 year olds play this game and I love that
Also the entertainment thing reminds me of Yuya but I’ve only watched like 2 episodes of arc v so what do i know
I don’t have much to say about the other characters. If you want their names and appearances and even what their names mean check out the website I linked that’s where I’m getting all my info from. I’ll link it again here
Next up: the monsters
On the left is Sevens Road Magician, Yuga’s ace monster. On the right is Rush Dragon Dragears. Both are, perhaps unsurprisingly, level 7 monsters
Sevens Road Magician is a magician monster, which makes Yuga the third protagonist to use some variant of the magician archetype (fourth if you count Yusaku’s Cyberse Magician, but that was only one monster). It also has the dark magical circle in the background, which a quick google search tells me is a thing exclusive to Yugi’s magicians aka the dark magicians. This is extra interesting, considering blue eyes white dragon appears in the trailer
It also only has 2100 attack which is really low for a level 7 monster. It had better have a good effect to make up for this. Also, this is a deviation from the trend of ace monsters having 2500 attack which I know was technically broken first by vrains but decode talker’s effect lets it boost itself to 2500 and also Yusaku’s ace was supposed to be firewall dragon anyway before it was banished to the tcg and ocg banlist for being too overpowered. Flame wingman had 2100 attack, so maybe another ace is coming later on?
You know what does have 2500 attack? Rush Dragon Dragears, which is Luke’s (the blue haired guy) ace. It’s not clear if this guy is the rival or not, but if he is this is also a deviation from the norm since rival’s aces usually have 3000 attack. It could also be that the guy using blue eyes is the rival
The ‘rush’ in the monster’s name probably refers to the new rush duels, and ‘dragears’ is a portmanteau of dragon and gears. ‘Gears’ is notable because Yuga is the inventor, and it’s stated that machines tend to break around Luke
It’s also stated that Yuga calls his inventions ‘roads’ (which is a pun on his name, for anyone curious). My guess is that he somehow invented or at least named Sevens Road Magician, and possibly Rush Dragon Dragears too. It looks like he at least has a connection to the latter monster
The parallels to DM are also very apparent with these two monsters. One has obvious ties to the dark magician archetype and the other is a blue dragon, plus we have a dark spellcaster and a light dragon (or at least, I assume that’s their types. I can’t read Japanese). Needless to say I’m very excited to learn more about them.
Plus, the title king of duels which the characters are fighting for according to the brief plot summary sounds very similar to king of games. Take this with a grain of salt though since 5Ds had the king of riding duels title but was mostly divorced from DM
Now onto rush duels. They seem to be the new gimmick, and I can’t help but compare them to speed duels from vrains. There’ll probably be a mix of master and rush duels in sevens, like how vrains had a mix of speed and master duels. It’s also stated that Yuga is the inventor of rush duels, and their focus is on winning duels quickly. Looks like we’ve come a long way from the 6 episode long duels in DM. I don’t doubt that the length of duels will still be 1 or 2 episodes though
What are rush duels exactly? Basically they’re regular duels except you can normal summon as much as you want in your turn, and at the start of your turn you draw until you have 5 cards in your hand. Special cards with the new layout seen on the earlier cards will be used in this format, so it won’t break the game thank goodness
One of the reasons I liked vrains so much was because their archetypes were really good in the actual game. It’ll be weird going from that to cards that can’t even be used in the TCG unless they get reprinted in the original card format
I am very fond of Sevens Road Magician though. He looks like a very friendly guy
My final point is the the series is probably called sevens because it’s the seventh series. Also the duel disk is shaped like a 7 which is pretty neat
Anyway, that’s all I have to say about the new info we’ve gotten. I guess we’ll have to wait until April so see how much I got right
Feel free to add on anything else you’ve noticed

Books read in August
So, yeah, finally reviewed everything from August.
I’ve been reading a bit fiction set during 20th century wars. I’ve always been interested in books set during that period, but I’ve been reading more of them lately.
Favourite cover: Flygirl wins (although I borrowed The Alice Network based on its title and cover so good marketing there I guess).
Reread: Pretty Face by Lucy Parker, Promised Land by Connie Willis and Cynthia Felice, and bits of other things.
Still reading: Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll.
Next up: The Bride Test by Helen Hoang.
(Longer reviews and ratings are on LibraryThing. And also Dreamwidth.)
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert (narrated by Rebecca Soler): Alice and her mother Ella have lived on the road, moving somewhere new each time their strange bad luck has caught up with them. When Ella is mysteriously abducted, Alice is desperate to get her back. To do so, Alice has to uncover the truth about her grandmother’s weird fairytales and her grandmother’s estate, the Hazel Wood. This is such a sharp, compelling story about fairytales and fate and family, with a sharp, compelling voice. The ending felt oddly anti-climactic and I’m reserving judgement on some things until I see how the sequel resolves them -- but otherwise, this is excellent.
Masques by Patricia Briggs: Even though this edition was revised years after Masques was first published, it’s still very obviously Briggs’ first novel. Clichéd and, in many ways, clumsy. Yet in spite of the book’s many imperfections, I liked Aralorn (the illegitimate daughter of a lord and a shapeshifter who left home to become a mercenary-turned-spy) and her enigmatic friend Wolf (who spends his time as a talking wolf or a masked magician). I liked individual scenes, even if some transitions and connections between them were not as strong as the scenes themselves, and there was enough tension to keep me turning pages.
The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher (Ursula Vernon): Fifteen year old Rhea is made an offer of marriage she can’t refuse -- there are consequences if peasants offend lords. Lord Crevan’s house is found at the end of an eerie white road and when Rhea arrives, she discovered he is already married. This book is creepy and yet I never found it too dark. It acknowledges that horrors exist and shows someone ordinary with courage and resourcefulness (and a hedgehog companion) who is equal to overcoming them. I’m sure Kingfisher is capable of writing something totally terrifying but I trusted that that was not the goal here.
Mort by Terry Pratchett (narrated by Nigel Planer): A young man called Mort is offered an unexpected apprenticeship -- with Death. Reading this after twenty-four of the later books highlights how both the Discworld and Pratchett’s skills as a storyteller developed over the series. But if I’d started here, I definitely wouldn’t have cared as much about Death or Ankh-Morpork or the wizards -- and I would have been a lot less confident that this would be an entertaining and satisfactory story. So I can’t regret my reading order. Also, Pratchett’s way with words is always fun.
With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo: Emoni Santiago has the opportunity to take a culinary arts class in her final year of high school. This is a vivid look at Emoni’s world. It was particularly interesting to read a story about a teen parent which doesn’t focus on pregnancy or babies. Emoni has a two-year old daughter which affects so many things -- Emoni’s relationship with her grandmother, her finances, her hesitations about college and dating. But what drives this story is Emoni discovering how to approach her passion for cooking with discipline, and what that means for her future.
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn (narrated by Saskia Maarleveld): Sharp and tense, occasionally horrifying, occasionally heartbreaking yet ultimately hopeful, and oh, do I have lots of thoughts and feelings about this! It alternates between Charlie in 1947, a college student who asks Eve to help her find her missing cousin, and Eve in 1915, a spy in France. I love how the two storylines fit together, occasionally echoing each other with themes and variations. This is about fierce, difficult, unconventional, broken, women and so much of the story is driven by their relationships. It isn’t perfect, and sometimes made me uncomfortable, but it balances out darkness with hope. Captivating.
The Headmistress (1944) by Angela Thirkell: This revolves around the Belton family, who have rented out their large house to a girls’ school, and some of their closest neighbours. It’s Thirkell, so it is amusing and observant about life during wartime, told with a gentleness that is very -- very -- occasionally broken by an unnecessary moment of prejudice. Those moments aside, I enjoyed reading this a lot. I thought it was particularly insightful when it came to a sixteen year old’s (somewhat confused and contrary) fantasies after being rescued. Something else which stood out was its portrayal of navigating the changing relationship between parents and their adult children.
The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow: Post-apocalypse, an AI has decided to discourage nation states from war by taking all heirs hostage. Greta, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan Polar Confederacy, a seventh-generation hostage, knows she will be killed if the confederacy ever breaks the peace. This was compelling (the first half slightly more than the second) and there’s a lot I could talk about: the terrifyingly yet believable future of fighting over resources; the darkly-humorous AI overlord; the cutting commentary on power and politics; the delicate bonds between the hostages. Maybe after I’ve read the sequel.
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith: In 1943, Ida joins the Women Airforce Service Pilots, knowing she will only succeed if she can pass for a white girl. I enjoyed seeing what the WASP training process involved. There’s the appeal of boarding school stories: young people living and training together, teamwork and camaraderie, friends supporting each other, standing up to bullies, and so on. But what I found most interesting was how passing is an everyday concern for Ida. And what does it mean to put so much effort into making a place for herself in a white world where she can’t reveal her true identity?
