Day 4 of #28daysofblackcosplay goes to Sailor Pluto. Being an OG fan of Sailor Moon when it aired in 1993 in the US it was always a dream of mine to be a Sailor Senshi. But watching the first season I was always disheartened that there were no dark skinned scouts. That is till Sailor Moon R happened. Now granted in the anime Sailor Pluto has roughly the same skin tone as the rest of the girls. That is until I was about 11 and began to read the manga and saw that Naoko Takeuchi drew Pluto/ せつな 冥王 (Setsuna Meiou/ Trista (lol)) as a character of color. That opened her up to becoming my favorite scout without question. Even though I connected with Usagi/Serena (we’re both cancers and our birthdays are seriously close) Pluto is just everything! Plus I grew up with Pluto as a Planet, I’ll die with Pluto is still a planet. Dead Scream for life! Sailor Pluto, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune’s fuku uniforms made by me. Garnet Rod made by @teatraybat As a Black cosplayer, I’ve long since realized that black cosplayers in the community don’t get there just dues and appreciation for the work they do. We are always called “variants” or “(insert character name) if they were black”. I think it’s time we break that negative stigma and show appreciation for cosplayers of color.
