It’s hard to sit still, pretend that everything is fine. You keep reminding yourself there’s no one to pretend for, not right now, but it doesn’t sink in, what with you being in Ortega’s apartment.

He was called away as you were having dinner, some new villain, Cerberus you think he said, was running amok downtown. “Don’t worry,” he’d said, “Put some leftovers aside for me?” he’d said.

Night has fallen since, and you haven’t heard anything yet. Been trying very hard not to, in fact. It’s better not to know in case it’s not going well, because you can’t help without betraying everything, and that would start a whole other thing, and.

No. You’re not going to break over this, and anyway, some never heard of villain won’t even slow down the Rangers, you’re just being silly because you’re stuck in Ortega’s apartment and that and your whole relationship is definitely the reason you’re freaking out. Yes, that’s all there is to it, no new feelings to be concerned about at all.

You allow yourself a couple minutes, hugging your legs, on the edge of crying, before you push those feelings back down. Better to think about what to present when Ortega comes back. In the couch with a book sounds good, right? Maybe you can even fall asleep mid reading, the picture of innocence.

12. If they had a garden, what would it be filled with?

Ooh, I love this one. :’D Lock’s kept various gardens throughout his life - one in his rooms as a Padawan and later a Knight, small ones in the various places he’s crashed after the Mandalorian Wars, and even later, in the home he shares with Carth and Dustil. He’s not particularly discriminatory against plant types. As long as they’re not going to be dangerous to whomever he’s rooming with, he enjoys making them grow. He grows practical things that Carth throws into his cooking like fruits, vegetables, and herbs, as well as simply the pretty things like flowers from all across the galaxy. One section of his garden is reserved for Dustil to work with, who planted some of Morgana’s favorite flowers. A lot of things get swapped out over the years, but Morgana’s flowers are the one thing that stay consistent.

As a child, Sash was definitely one of those little girls who had a pony phase and decorated her room accordingly... or, well, with whatever the galaxy far, far away’s equivalent of a pony is. :’D So Sash would definitely say it’s that equivalent of a pony, mainly because of childhood nostalgia! (OP is a fake Star Wars fan who has no idea what their version of a pony is)

@ma-setheneran I think Elera has a pretty good take on the vallaslin now. Vallaslin are so personal anyways that I think it makes a lot of sense for an inquisitor to put more stock in that than the original lost meaning. They can represent not only the more recent Dalish history but also a personal history.

30 Day OC Challenge: Day 7 & 8 – Fighting

Methods

Does your OC fight? Is your OC good at fighting? Do they have a lot of combat experience? What is their fighting style? Favourite weapon/spell/move? Favourite way to kill?

Does he fight? Yes, he does. Is he good at it? Yes, he is. As discussed (at length) on day 2, he's scary fast – and pretty strong. Pain and injury, unless they're truly debilitating, only get his adrenaline up. (Useful during the fight, but very often dangerous – and occasionally life-threatening – once the fighting is done.) He doesn't need a weapon to injure or kill stuff.

And though most opponents know they need to watch out for his speed, they rarely expect the raw power behind those kicks and punches – until his fist connects with their stomach or jaw.  (That said, yes, he is surprisingly strong for a bloke his size, but not strong enough to be a match for someone who’s significantly bigger/stockier and more muscular. His speed and his endurance are his real assets and he knows that.)

Combat experience: Lavellans have to deal with all kinds of trouble: They have relatively frequent encounters with bandits and thieves, must protect their camp and their halla (and horses) from wild beasts and monsters – and since they tend to follow a trail of sethenerans, there's never any shortage of fade touched critters, demons and undead to dispatch. All able-bodied adults are expected to fight. They are trained to do so since childhood. Das also enjoys the occasional pit fight when he's in one of the bigger cities for trading, networking or running any other errands.

Still, Inquisition means he gets notably more practice than before. He's already a proficient fighter when he goes to spy on the Conclave, but while with the Inquisition, he improves dramatically.

Fighting style and methods: If he simply aims to defeat an adversary without necessarily killing them, he very often opts for unarmed attack/defence. (Depending of course on the size of the enemy, whether the said enemy is armed or not – and if yes, then what with.)

If he aims to kill, he draws his blades. (He starts out with twin sabres/daggers, but after losing his hand, he switches to sabre and shield.) He's aggressive in a fight. He relies on speed and precision. He has no patience for stealth. And though he of course blocks and dodges when he has to, it is absolutely not caution that informs his strategy. He aims to dispatch the enemy fast and he doesn't mind getting hurt in the process. And yes, he tends to be overconfident and reckless. Sometimes stupidly so, because he is a bloody show-off – and because thanks to his rather unique assets, he usually gets away with it. (And then sometimes he does not. Or worse, someone else gets hurt because of his recklessness.)

When he's offered the opportunity to pick a specialization, he picks Tempest. It suits him perfectly and nobody is surprised by his choice. Enhancing his already impressive endurance and speed with alchemy makes him even more intimidating as a fighter, if not downright scary.   Then he undergoes the Joining and adds Blight magic to his arsenal. And he progresses from 'intimidating if not downright scary' to 'nope. nope nope NOPE!' levels of creepy. 

More about that when magic is discussed – but, simply put, the Taint improves his reflexes (and helps him merge more easily with shadows) and he can spread it among his enemies, using it to mess with them and their bodies, minds, and perceptions: 

"I once witnessed Davarris destroy a small gang of slave hunters we ran into near the Wounded Coast. It was one of the creepiest things I've ever seen – and I have seen a broodmother. He just darted into the middle of the fray, oozing blood out of every pore, wearing the corruption about him like a crimson cloud and tainting every enemy that got anywhere near him. Within a few minutes they were all standing limp, blank-eyed and with their faces turned up to the sky, like a bunch of convicts hanged by their necks. Some of them were singing. Well... If you could call it that... More like humming and groaning along with whatever strand of the Song they picked up on. Even as he walked from one of those berks to another and slit their throats. And sure those fuckers didn't deserve any better but this shit was—wrong." (Warden Brock)

The more he taps into that power, the stronger the corruption gets.

Still, even though many of his kills look ugly (especially that Blight magic stuff), he finds no pleasure in torturing his enemies (not even when they're darkspawn - or slavers). He prefers quick kills. If he has to take a life, he's gonna do it fast if possible.

Morality

What do they think about fighting/violence as a solution to problems? What was the first time they killed someone? What fight do they have nightmares about?

"Sometimes you gotta punch a nose to get a point across. It ain't my preferred method, though. I mean... Does it solve problems? Sure. Does it cause MORE problems? Often. Life is already violent enough, no need to add to it unless it's strictly necessary."

Das certainly prefers peaceful solutions, dialogue and compromise (even if those who've witnessed his temper often assume otherwise). Partly because he often appreciates conflicting points of view – and partly because his main objective is always to minimize the damage and the suffering, especially among civilians and innocent bystanders. His first impulse generally is to be nice (in his own foul-mouthed manner...) - and he wants nothing more than to simply get along:

"Sometimes it just doesn't fucking matter who's right."

There are, however, instances when violence is necessary.

"If they made me choose between their life and mine or their life and the safety of those I love...? That's on them. And maybe they had their choices pushed on them by someone or something, but that ain't on me either."

If he can avoid a fight, he will. If he can't or if circumstances and morality dictate that he didn't, he'll charge without fear, hesitation – or caution, for that matter.

Once a fight is on, he actually rather enjoys it – and he's always down for a sparring match or a pit fight. (And he delights in taunting his adversaries.) It also needs to be said he has a mean, ruthless streak that gets triggered when one of his core principles is violated. It doesn’t happen often - but when it does happen, things get ugly. Pel Harmond could tell you all about that. Oh, wait... He couldn't.

What was the first time they killed someone? 

He first killed a person when he was still an apprentice. The hunting party he was with had an ugly encounter with a group of outlaws. He killed two - and one of them was even younger than he was. Their faces haunted his dreams for a while. He’s got used to killing since then. He doesn’t agonize over the lives he’s taken while defending himself or the clan and past battles rarely haunt him anymore. It is not that he doesn’t care - but he’s not the kind of man to get caught up in what-ifs and stale regrets.  He reflects, he mourns his fallen enemies - and he moves on. Instead of wallowing in guilt, he tries to focus on avoiding violent conflict whenever he can.

What fight do they have nightmares about? It’s the violence he has witnessed or suffered while being powerless against it that tends to come back to him in his nightmares. Like the darkspawn ambush he survived as a kid, or his stepfather’s violence against pretty much everyone and especially against his mother, or the abuse by his ex-lover. Or, more recently - the destruction of Haven, the dark future he’s seen at Redcliffe or the horrors of Adamant.

Blackwall

Shepard’s a fine warrior - er - rogue. Mage? I’m actually not sure what her specialisation is. All I know is the first and only time I tried to shield her in battle, she suggested shoving my mace somewhere I don’t think would have helped the fight. I’ve let her handle her own after that - and she handles her own damn well.

Cassandra

I admit, I am surprised at how much I have warmed to Shepard. She talks far too much and far too loudly, and I would prefer it if she didn’t flirt with me quite so viciously - but beneath the bravado is a good woman, and one who cares deeply about those she calls friends. There is no-one I would rather be in the field with; her tall tales can keep us entertained for hours, and I can always count on her to watch my back.

...do not tell her I said that. She will only turn it into some crude joke.

Cole

The Shepard is starlight, burning, brilliant - and broken. Pain flashes in the silence, sounds of those she loved before - she fights it, but fears it, new and old all at once. She makes everything else so loud even I can’t feel it sometimes - but it’s there, and it won’t go away, even though she wants it to. She thinks she’ll lose it either way.

She doesn’t know he feels it too. I don’t think she’d like it if she did.

Dorian

Ah, Shepard. How one manages to be simultaneously an exceptional commander and a walking disaster is truly beyond me. Alas, it is my destiny to watch on as our other Commander gazes after her like a puppy and she meanders on obliviously, running headfirst at enemies twice her size and generally getting herself into trouble. Of course, I know precisely why he adores her; she’s bright, and fun, and not a moment around her is boring - and despite all that talk, there’s an exceptionally soft heart underneath that spiky armour. I like her a great deal, actually - and I can think of no better match for our Commander.

The Iron Bull

Shep scares me a little bit. Watching a five-foot-nothing redhead beat the shit out of a behemoth was both one of the hottest and most terrifying things I’ve ever seen - and it’s a damn shame we got to burning off that tension too late, cos you just know she’s got some kinks - but it’s worked out for the best, because she’s ended up a good friend. Didn’t think I’d say it when I first met her, but I really would rather see her in bed with Cullen.

Not like that. Well... maybe a bit like that.

Marcus Trevelyan

On the whole, I’m glad I recruited Shepard. I know she finds it hard to be a follower, because she keeps trying to tell me what to do - but I also know it must be difficult for her to reliquish control, and I appreciate that she tries. She helps ground me when the title of Inquisitor feels like far too much, and I’m endlessly grateful for the support she offers. I’m still not sure I can do it, but with her at my side it almost feels like I can.

Sera

She’s a weird one, but - she’s fun, yeah? For a mage, or a not-mage, or - whatever. It’s not great anymore, because she’s propping up the demony one - and I kinda miss it, but it’s not my fault her mate’s actually in with Corypheshit. Still, I wish she’d play more. She’s good people, even if her friends aren’t.

Solas

I suggest you ask her. She gains far more enjoyment from talking about herself than I do.

Varric 

Flash is... honestly, I can’t really get a handle on Flash. She’s a hero in another person’s story, and it makes her a pain in the ass to write. If I cut her from this story too she’ll probably kill me, but if I write what I really want to - Worlds Apart, a story of love and redemption from the Gallows to Skyhold - Curly will definitely kill me. Still, that ‘opposites attract’ shit is a goldmine, so it could be worth the risk...

Vivienne

The small one who can’t go a whole minute without making a joke? She’s clearly impressed by herself - but she does have every right to be. Her talent in battle is substantial - it isn’t magic, apparently, but it is extraordinary - and I respect her drive and tenacity a great deal. That being said, I could go without hearing her cackle quite so obnoxiously.

Cullen

Wha- why would you--? Ah - very well. Shepard is... a remarkable woman. I was not my best when we first met, but despite my shortcomings she has always believed in me, even when I did not believe in myself. She is unflinching in her morality, yet she has shown me nothing but kindness, and compassion, and has made me feel-- well. She has simply made me feel, as I didn’t think I ever could.

In truth, Shepard is like no-one else I have ever known, and my life is infinitely better for her presence. No matter what comes next, I am honoured to have called her a friend.

Josephine

Shepard is a vivacious, charming woman, and the worst dancer in the entirety of Thedas. I have spent my adult life negotating the knife-edge politics of The Game, and yet teaching Shepard how to waltz was possibly the most challenging task I have ever faced. It isn’t even difficult; it is only three-- ahem. But I digress. Her lack of talent in the ballroom is, fortunately, not representative of her skill in the field, and I sleep much easier, knowing she is beside Marcus in his battles.

Leliana

I have spent the past six months trying to find any information on Shepard, and I haven’t uncovered a thing. It is as though the woman simply appeared out of thin air. I do believe she’s here for the right reasons - she is too easy to read to hide some secret allegiance to Corypheus - but I’d be more reassured if I knew something of her past. We don’t even know if she’s really a Commander - though considering how she likes to boss others around, I think it’s safe to assume that, at least, is true. The upside: the Inquisition is stronger for her allegiance. The downside: Cullen is worse than useless whenever she is in the room.

My Knight Tash’saarai is… such a disaster, gosh. But she’s a determinedly optimistic creampuff even though she’s a dumb jock who sometimes makes bad choices, so I think I’m gonna go with To the Dreamers by for KING & COUNTRY;

Ashedan is also a disaster, but for completely different reasons. He definitely starts out fitting Natural by Imagine Dragons (he’s darkish grey at the beginning) but then he meets Vette and that… stops applying to the same degree, because he likes her So Much. (I didn’t even MEAN for him to romance her but she’s SO CUTE.)

Anyway, yeah, he starts out Very Sithy, with the ‘I’ll do what I have to to survive this’ mentality.

And even once it’s not true all the way through, that’s the facade he puts up. (And he really only ever makes it to lightish grey, because he murders… kind of a lot of people. Had it been an option he absolutely would have thrown Quinn out an airlock - not even for the betrayal itself, for the comment that the others will fall in line or die. Ashedan does not deal well with having people he loves threatened, and honestly I think having more than about three people in that category would turn him into a neurotic MESS.)

Based purely on the actual in-game text, I’m gonna go with SW/Vette, because she’s got a lot of content and it means there’s a slow enough burn for me to just sit there doing the chinhands thing and going, ‘I love this and my dumb Warrior is doing more pining than an entire coniferous forest.’

… honestly, she makes him Very Soft and he only flirted like twice because he didn’t want to scare her so I think one of the best songs I have for it is Once in a Lifetime by Landon Austin.

(Disclaimer; all of these rankings are made having not properly romanced either Theron or Lana, in spite of them having center stage for so much of the game. I love Theron with other people’s OCs but have not been able to really romance him with any of my own because I am entirely convinced he’s Taken and it would be Wrong to flirt with him. I have no idea why I have that response to him, specifically, and Literally No One Else. I’m going to blame it on reading a lot of excellent fic and delightful HCs, I’m just always like [clutches pearls] BUT HE IS MARRIED. With Lana, the problem is that she looks SO MUCH LIKE MY MOTHER that it is legitimately uncomfortable to contemplate.)

The Strict Teacher: Vanyke Salthar

Disobey her and you might lose a hand. She doesn’t tolerate stupidity nor insolence.

The Nice Teacher: Wenia  Zana or Eyssa

Both are very patient and have kind souls. They’re gentle and understanding. Wenia bakes often and likes to share her goodies, and Eyssa likes the occasional harmless prank.

Troublemaker: Aja Yetter

She’s constantly talking back and her writing is atrocious. Sometimes she can’t even read something she wrote minutes ago. She’s also got a habit of getting into impossible places and irritating anyone with authority over her if she doesn’t like them

Teacher’s Pet: Leikar

He refuses to break any rules. At all. He study in moral quandaries on who he’s more loyal to, his sisters or the rules, when they break the rules. Sometimes he turns them in or he sticks by them.

Quiet One: Thantien Mallvek

He’s quiet and likes to silently slide under everyone’s radar. Than enjoys being average, not letting anyone know of his royal heritage, and so he often doesn’t speak up and gives his full attention to whatever he’s doing.

The Joker: Dalix Argethir (I had to pick him b/c Orannus is used for something else)

He gets joy out of irritating others with jokes and embarrassing pranks. The more uptight and stickler for the rules, the higher you are on his target list. He’ll use pranks and insulting jokes to get ahead. If he likes you, the jokes/pranks are personalized.

The Jock: Daltor Ravico

He spends his free time training and working on his reflexes. Being the best means practicing like he’s in second place, and he’s determined to hang onto his champion status.

The Truant: Carmadda Shade

Who else were you expecting here? Look up “bad influence” and there’s her picture, along with a notation for alcoholic and snark

The Heart-Throb: Orannus Hallow

He’s charming, full of bad puns and good ones, and is the center of all social functions. There’s a reason his gym shorts say ‘stud-muffin’ on the ass

The Queen Bee: Fiika Allos

She rules over her domain with grace and a level head. But if you get on her bad side or make yourself her enemy, be prepared. Fiika does give everyone a mild benefit of the doubt. Go past that benefit, and your whole world will be decimated. Not with shots fired, but more like a well-aimed bazooka.
