I know this bit is about how Lily and Mikuni were using him, but the rook piece really does suit Mahiru

First of all, the rook is typically portrayed as a castle or tower. One of the characters in Shirota means "castle/fortress". His father's surname includes the word for "tower" and The Tower is the tarot associated with Touma. But also...

Mahiru is a character that stubbornly charges straight ahead towards his goals. In chess, the rook isn't limited to moving a specific number of spaces, but it can only move in straight lines. Powering through a problem while looking straight ahead suits Mahiru. He isn't a pawn who can only move one space at a time. He's the rook, the second most powerful piece after the queen (and third most valuable after the king and queen). He can charge forward all the way to the other end of the board.

Largely, Lily is saying Mahiru far exceeded his expectations. He underestimated Mahiru because he had a bit of a rough start as an eve. A rook isn't the most useful piece at the beginning of a game when it's boxed in by other pieces after all. But Lily may also be complaining that Mahiru didn't move in the ways that he wanted. A pawn is much more limited overall, but it can move diagonally a space. Mahiru is a force that refuses any movement but forward

Finally reading the latest translated chapter, I thought Mikuni's handwriting was terrible? If I remember correctly, Misono said that Mikuni's handwriting is usually ineligible. As someone who struggles with writing nicely, I usually have to put in a lot of effort make my writing readable, and yet you can still see the parts of my handwriting that look off. By that logic, the love letters that were supposedly crafted by Mikuni should have something that resembles his handwriting, right? Unless Mikuni has been purposely writing with his non-dominant hand the whole time, feels like Lily seems to have forgotten that particular fact.

Snow Lily has always been someone the inhabitants of the Alicein Mansion could rely on, you included. He seemed to appear out of the blue whenever you needed him, willing to help you, despite you not wanting to bother him over trivial matters. He was already busy enough dealing with Misono and his subclasses, you didn't want to burden him anymore. Yet, he has never perceived you as a weight.

Trying to hide your problems from Snow Lily was pointless anyway, somehow he would always find everything out; even the silliest things, such as when you scratched your knee while playing hide and seek with one of his younger subclasses. You were so embarrassed when he told you to be more careful, while tending your wound - yet, he didn't seem to find it funny (If I hadn't cleaned it, you could've got an infection, he says and you have to refrain from laughing out loud).

Snow Lily knows that you can take of yourself, but would like you to remember that you can rely on him too, that there's no need to be ashamed to ask for his help. Sometimes it's hard to deal with life on your own - and he knows it too - so you don't have to be afraid, he will be here when you need him, it doesn't matter if you think it's silly, he'll do what he can to be of help.

Why have an Eve

The war is over and a few decades have passed tsubaki is thinking about getting an eve and having a purpose again. He doesn't know what to look for so he decides to ask his sibling why they have eves and what eves are for.

Lust: Eves are people to stay with and care for. They support us and in return we support them. It is a great amazing relationship that should never be tainted.

Gluttony: Eves are a home. They give us a place to stay when thing are down. Never try to end it or you be on the street. They are a great source of food.

Greed: Eves are the people willing to talk or kick you out of your crap. They help you with you problems. No matter the dark place they are a light of your life.

Wrath: Eves are partners. Both work together to get through the harsh world. Whether by talking or doing something as simple as growing an apple farm

Envy: Eve are annoying people, but I guess regardless of that they are good

Pride: Eves are as much our servants as we are their. It is mutual beneficial. Our power for their blood. Never forget you roots as a servamp, but still make sure you don't take advantage of them.

Sloth: Eves are a pain, but they are worth it. There's no main reason to get an eve but if you find someone that makes you happy and and you belive you could make them happy and safe to.

Tsubaki still isn't sure what he want in an eve, but he still thinks it sounds good to have one.

Childhood & Teen Crushes (aka “Boys I Loved Before”) Aesthetic | Snow Lily

I'm interested in the timeline here. This has Mikuni uncovering Lily's plan within a year of when Kiriko dies and Mikuni leaves the Alicein Mansion. Is this something he learns as he leaves the mansion, or is this knowledge something Mikuni picks up while working with C3/through Touma's channels?

Because Touma didn't seem like he was ignorant of the Alicein's scheming in the C3 Arc. Touma shot Mahiru immediately after hearing that Mikuni was the one who sent him towards Touma.

Also, this leaves room for more connection between the Alicein Family Drama and the Shirota Family Drama. Akira died about 5 years before canon, which puts her death around one and a half to two years after Mikuni becomes an accomplice to Lily's scheme. Lily also doesn't specify how long Mahiru has been a potential target of this conspiracy. It's odd that Lily didn't mention either Tooru or Akira here. At the very least it's strange that Lily expected Touma to be the one distracted by protecting Mahiru when Tooru is his guardian and is also a mage with significant influence.
