The ENNIES allowing AI generated content to be submitted for awards feels like such an easily avoided own-goal/shot in the foot that I’m now wondering what weird AI investor bro on their Board or with their sponsors was able to bully them into it.
#also why is the entire panel of judges white?#ennies#ttrpgs#table top games#this used to be one of those awards with pretty solid reputation and prestige#but I guess they just threw that out the window#seriously though WHAT is the benefit of allowing generative AI in a creative competition??

This week, Samsung took center stage to unveil its latest and much-anticipated Galaxy S smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Here’s what’s coming!
#gallery-0-7 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-7 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Rather than announcing the two flagship smartphones on the same floor as LG, who introduced the flagship G6 in Barcelona at MWC 2017, Samsung held a private event in NYC on March 29th along with a satellite event happening in the city of London. The event took place at 11:00am Eastern Standard Time in the Lincoln Center, one of New York’s largest and most highly reputed indoor venues. Although most news out of the South Koran manufacturer was expected, there were some things that surprised us about the pair of new Galaxies. Some features are new to Samsung’s Galaxy S Series, others are totally new for Samsung, and the remaining are completely new to the industry. Have a look at what we mean below.
Display
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be the first to feature Samsung’s QHD+ Super AMOLED ‘Infinity display’ made of Gorilla Glass 5. The aspect ratio is 18 and a half by 9, or 18.5:9. The Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch screen and the Galaxy S8+ comes with a larger 6.2-inch screen. If you know display sizes, than you know that these numbers are quite striking for a smartphone, in fact could fit a small tablet. However, both Galaxy S8 models include a totally revamped design with slim and short bezels, thanks to the removal of the physical home button and relocation of Samsung’s fingerprint reader to the back of the phone. In fact, Samsung assured us at its event mentioning that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are the smallest devices for their display sizes in the whole industry, and hence maximized their screen-to-body ratio (about 85%). The display on both handsets is of a QHD+ resolution, which consists of 2960 x 1440 pixels. This unusual number is generated by Samsung’s new 18.5:9 display panel, compared to the 16:9 standard ratio for most other smartphones.
In a move that follows suite with cinema trends, which was recently adopted by the LG G6 (18:9), the company calls its new screen an ‘Infinity Display’. Similar to LG’s ‘Full Vision’ display, Samsung Infinity Display features a less-wide and more tall aspect ratio. Google is reportedly working hand-in-hand with Samsung and others to take on the upcoming standard, which will replace 16:9. Two downsides of the yet to be furnished technology are videos and games, which will letterbox photos, videos and other media content. This may result in the showing of Black bars on the sides of your screen when immersed in 16:9 content. Samsung does however let users zoom in, but this will slightly reduce the quality of images by cropping or stretching to fit the screen. Until the switch has been fully adopted, this will always be a dilemma. For now though, Samsung has tuned its user interface from the inside out to support the new screen resolution in most cases.
Samsung has dressed its new smartphone models in ultra-high resolution wallpapers to fit the new screen dimensions. Because of the added space, users will benefit from seeing more on-screen at a time, which means better multi-taking and less scrolling up and down. Touches like these have been made all throughout the interface including the camera, device settings and other Samsung-branded apps. Samsung’s Infinity Display also brings compliance for latest in HDR technology ‘Mobile HDR Premium’. This is support for the newest in high dynamic range, a technology that’s near the beginning of its life and is yet to be adopted by most smartphone brands. In fact, a whopping 90% of TV monitors lack support for any kind of HDR. HDR is next generation imaging that brings content to life. Whether it be a UHD video or multi-player online game, the technology provides a visual experience like no other with its crisp quality and color precision.
This form of HDR content is scarce, but Samsung established close ties with Amazon who will deliver exclusive HDR content to the Galaxy S9 models. Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners will be among the very first to explore HDR Video in its full potential. More is to come with time.
Bixby + Google Assistant
If you thought Samsung wasn’t taking automation and artificial intelligence with enough seriousness and competitive-edge, you got what you wanted at Unpacked 2017. Announced a week or so prior to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ official launch day was ‘Bixby‘, Samsung’s upgraded digital voice assistant that will replace S Voice. While the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ add a range of functionality and capability, the Bixby voice assistant helps manage and simplify life. Bixby is a deep learning virtual assistant technology based on AI that improves with time thanks to fifth-generation programming and machine learning. It will compete with the likes of Amazon’s Alexa voice, Google’s Assistant tech and Apple’s Siri (which lacks some of these capabilities).
Bixby can be controlled using both voice and touch. Voice is the primary way of interaction, which can help command your phone and complete certain actions such as turning different settings on or off, searching for a certain term on the web, locating a specific file, sending messages, or even controlling your environment’s connected smart products such as Nest Thermostat and others. Bixby is also contextual like Google Now on Tap and Google Feed (previously Google Now), meaning that it has the power to recognize objects and text shown on screen. This is extraordinarily helpful in removing the need to switch between apps and copy and paste data. Object recognition even lets you research objects based on what’s in the view of your camera lens, a feature we are very much looking forward to testing out. Best of all Bixby is always on standby, responding to hotwords “Hello, Bixby” or by a press on the new dedicated Bixby hardware button found on the left side of each device.
Bixby brings a whole new dimension of interacting and communicating with your phone and connected world around you. It even works inside apps such as the camera, and can perform different functions to help go about your life faster with added convenience. Users can start by swiping right on their homescreen, which will bring up Bixby’s home menu, where it’s possible to interact with personalized information cards. Interestingly, Bixby will adapt to supply useful information at the right time. This can be based on the current weather, time of day or even one’s own location, if granted the permission to. This means that walking into work and having a reminder triggered automatically to pick up where yesterday’s project left off is now possible. Best of all, Samsung is working with partners to add third-party support for different apps, added functionality, and to be linked in services.
Since both of Samsung’s new models come pre-installed with Android 7.0 Nougat, the Google Assistant will also be pre-loaded. Though Bixby is set to the default for most apps and controls, users can if they’d like switch to the Google Assistant, which features similar capabilities. Of course, Google Now on Tap and all are here as well, just hidden from view upon first glance. It’s obvious Samsung wants people to use their own service, but given the work-in-progress status of Bixby, which is at an early stage, it might be more wise to switch in favor of the Google Assistant for now which provides direct access to the Google search engine, personalized content and info cards from Google Services. Google Assistant can be set up from settings, but won’t however be capable of the functions Bixby has in controlling Samsung’s own suite of apps. It’s good to see the choice users will have upfront. We give it till IFA for Samsung to announce a standalone Bixby smart speaker and Bixby enabled smartwatch.
Camera
Though the cameras found on the Galaxy S8 aren’t revolutionizing the performance of shots, there are some noteworthy upgrades. The 12MP rear-facing shooter on both Galaxy S8 models is a new Sony IMX333 sensor with Samsung’s returning Dual Pixel technology. New is multi-frame processing, which shortens the speed needed to take a photo as well as post-processing once it has been captured. Making its return are the full-blown manual controls for advanced photography. And for the lens itself, it doesn’t protrude, not a single bit.
On the front of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is an improved selfie camera, which now includes OIS and auto-focusing. This will help in taking shots focused around the main subject in each image and lower to the time frame needed to snap the shot. Making things easier and more creative are new software features that let users dazzle their shots with stickers and customize pictures using a variety of filters. Diving further in, users will find Bixby support and features that take advantage of the new 18.5:9 aspect ratio of the screen. Additionally, the double tap of the home button to pull up the camera in less than .5 of a second from last year’s Galaxy S7 models has been re-implemented. Nothing has been mentioned nor discovered regarding the shooting of 18.5:9 footage.
Biometric Security
On the all new Galaxy S8 models, Samsung has added a variety of biometric security methods for faster and more convenient unlocking of protected apps, sending payments and bypassing your lockscreen. Iris scanning has made its debut on the Galaxy S Series for the first time after being first included on now-deceased Galaxy Note 7. This allows users to use their eyes as their passcode. With a simple glance, your device will be unlocked. And best of all, it’s secure, even more than a fingerprint scanner, though the extra option is there.
The Galaxy S8 models also board facial recognition. Iris scanning details one’s iris located in the eye, and facial recognition uses facial features as one’s password. It’s really fast, although not as secure when compared to iris scanning and fingerprint reading.
The Smaller Things
Starting with the exterior, both new smartphones lack Samsung’s notorious home button with rounded corners. Replacing it are software keys, which feature a fresh design apart from the ones Google, LG, HTC, and others use on their phones. These are even customizable, meaning that the placement of each nav key can be switched around. Users can even change the color of the nav bar using a RGB color wheel. The fingerprint scanner that was once found inside the home button has been relocated to the rear of the device to the right of its secondary camera lens. Both Galaxy S8 models also feature pressure sensitivity near the bottom of the front glass, which houses a home button that works when the device is powered on.
Because the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ attract so many fingerprints due to their glossy design, Samsung has included a feature to let users know when the rear camera sensor needs a cleaning from these marks. This is built into Samsung’s new Experience user interface, which includes a fresh coat of paint from settings to apps and across menus and icons. One feature that people haven’t quite put together yet is the absence of an app drawer button. Instead, the Galaxy S8 models use a swipe up gesture to locate the drawer of installed applications, just like on Google’s Pixel Launcher, which remains excluded from the Play Store. Present on Samsung’s new launcher are more cohesive icons, a new dash clock widget and a plain horizontal Google Search bar (also accessible from the app drawer). Samsung’s new phones also manage to include Bluetooth 5.0, making them the first in the industry to support it.

During Samsung’s Unpacked address, one of the company’s female executives unveiled a major stat pertaining to the rapid adoption of Samsung Pay, the service that allows high-end Samsung branded handsets to pay at over 1 million locations using MST and NFC. The company has reportedly captured 1/4 of a billion transactions from over 240 of its partners. Samsung continues to evolve how we pay with our phones, and this year, announced an extension of Samsung Pass, which will allow more payments to be transferred online to vendors and retailers. Additionally, Samsung Pay gained support for the company’s newly added biometric security methods including both iris scanning and facial recognition.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will come with Samsung Health. Samsung partnered with American Well in the making of “ask an expert,” which is a service that allows users to connect with a doctor online from their own phone at any time of the day. It will be available soon beginning with Korea and China, and the U.S. later on. The app may also make way eventually to the Play Store or Galaxy app Store so that others can take advantage of its feature set.
Accessories
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will come in a variety of color options which will vary per carrier and location. The list includes: Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue, and Maple Gold. Present inside each and every box will be a pair of AKG headphones ($99 value), thanks to Samsung’s recent acquisition of Harman. Additionally, the Korean company announced a slew of accessories that will be available alongside its new flagships.
Gear VR with Controller will allow users to watch footage in a full 360-degrees. The new Gear 360 will allow Galaxy customers to capture it all with 4K video recording in a full 360-degrees. The new edition of the camera can be more easily held in-hand, and comes with live broadcasting capability in a partnership with Facebook and others. Samsung Connect Home is a fancy router hub that can be set up from a new app that lets users control all their smart home tech, IOT devices and automation equipment in one convenient location. It even includes built-in voice control. And last but certainly not least, is Samsung’s DeX Station, which transforms one’s phone into a personal computer with the pairing of a wireless monitor, mouse or keyboard. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ connect through a dock, which can if plugged in, charge each device while transforming it into a desktop workstation. The experience has loads of future potential and is the ultimate accessory for any with productive and portable needs. It’s protected by Samsung KNOX security from the very epicenter and will be available soon.
