I am losing my mind right now because I just discovered, completely by accident, that a whole bunch of albums that were put out by Varèse Sarabande in the 90s are finally available digitally after being out of print for years (and pretty obscure even when they were in print). You can see the full list here.
The Lost in Boston and Unsung Musicals albums were a big deal for me back in the day, and being able to actually share them with people now just makes me so happy.

Hi! I’ve been an elo fan for a while but I’m not really familiar with any of the band members except for jeff lynne because i always thought the rest were coming and going. Can you give me a little intro to the band like who are considered the main band members? Thanks!
AHHHHHHH thank you for asking this omgggggg!! (Also, as a side note, I actually sent another blogger an ask just like this a year ago when I was getting more into the band, so this is a very surreal moment to see that now people are asking ME???!!!!!)
I will begin with Roy Wood.
ELO was the brain child of Roy primarily, and he and Jeff were the driving creative force of the band at the start. Just like Jeff, he knows how to play 47309478193 different instruments, and on his solo work he did practically everything himself. He's a cool guy with awesome crazy hair and awesome fashion sense. But he left the band very early on (after about a year I think) to form a different band called Wizzard.
Now, there are tons of different guys who were members of ELO over the years, but to keep this from becoming super long and complicated, I will now stick to the rest of the Magnificent Seven. This is the longest running line-up of ELO, and the seven of them were together for a lot of the band's most successful period. This line-up was:
Jeff Lynne: guitar, vocals, writer, producer, etc., you know his deal already haha Bev Bevan: drums Richard Tandy: keyboards Kelly Groucutt: bass Mik Kaminski: violin Melvyn Gale: cello Hugh McDowell: cello
Now the fun part! (Well, fun for me at least haha.)
Bev Bevan:
Bev is the gorgeous smashy drummer with big biceps and a terrifyingly deep voice. He founded the band with Jeff and Roy and was with ELO till 1986. He's very opposite to Jeff in many ways (and pulled lots of pranks on Jeff haha). While Jeff loves working in the studio, Bev loves playing live and going on tour - so much so that after Jeff called it quits for the band in 1986, Bev started up another band called ELO Part II with a few of the other members so he could keep things going (which unfortunately ruffled feathers with Jeff quite badly and essentially ended their friendship 😢😢).
Richard Tandy:
Richard is the very-talented keyboard player who joined very soon after the band began - and he is still an official member to this day!!! Unfortunately he only has small roles on the Jeff Lynne's ELO albums now and he doesn't play live much because of health issues, but he and Jeff are still very close. He is a very focused, serious man when it comes to music. I believe I read that he would lock himself away for hours to learn some challenging pieces of music, and he was the only member of the band to actually take sound checks seriously at their shows haha. Also he's really into films and sports.
Kelly Groucutt:
KELLY MY BELOVED!! He is my favorite hehe. The awesome sweetheart bass player who, fun fact, was actually named Michael. But during the early years of ELO, they had lots of Michaels, so they asked Kelly to pick a different name so it would be less confusing haha, and he went by Kelly ever since. He also sang lots of backup vocals, plus occasional lead vocals (check out Poker to hear his voice, he sang that whole song double-tracked). He was very outgoing and goofy, made tons of silly jokes, couldn't sit still, and was a huge chatterbox. I could say tons more on him but I will hold back haha. He was also in ELO Part II with Bev, but Kelly unfortunately passed away in 2009.
Mik Kaminski:
Mik is the adorable boy on the iconic blue violin. He's a very shy boy, but he still loves touring and performing for the fans. He also loooooves gambling and drinking haha. Also he is another of the Michaels lmao. After ELO ended in the 80s, Mik and Kelly made their own band called Orkestra, then later both joined ELO Part II. And after Bev left ELO Part II, the band changed their name to The Orchestra, and Mik is still playing with them to this day!
Melvyn Gale:
Melvyn is the angel on cello. It took him a while to join the group (he was asked to join multiple times but kept recommending other cellists instead haha), but they finally got him! He is apparently also very chatty, and quite the charmer with the ladies. And in addition to cello, he's also a phenomenal pianist (the epic piano solo in Wild West Hero is him). After his time in ELO ended he ran (or at least worked at) a record manufacturing company for a while, and he is currently teaching cello and piano lessons!
Hugh McDowell:
And Hugh is the demon on cello ahaha. He is fucking crazy and I love him for it. He joined ELO very early on, then left with Roy Wood to be in Wizzard, then came back to ELO. He stole the show in all the live performances, jumping around, spinning/throwing his cello, hair flying in his face. He rocks hard. He's just wild all-around. He apparently got kicked out of school for telling a teacher to fuck off because the teacher wouldn't let him play the music the way he wanted or something. He also once broke down his hotel room door when he lost the key haha. Though he was also known to always have his face buried in a book - he loved to read. He unfortunately passed away in 2018.

Honestly it could have been just Van and Benji in the studio at first while they figured out drums and potentially lead guitar (if they don’t plan on making Van the sole guitarist). Considering it’s essentially Van writing all the music, all that’s really needed to start recording is him. I’m sure they had something in place for drums. I don’t know who but it’s LA. Anything is possible.
Record labels will tell their artists not to work with producers who are lie to fans about music coming. It becomes a liability issue and looks bad for the band and label being associated with liars. So bullshitting is really a no-go for producers cause they need clients so they can get paid to do what they love. Producers need to keep a positive history with labels.
As upsetting as it is, sometimes silence is better when it comes to situations like this in the long run. Ambiguity gives them freedom to do what they need to do. Sometimes waiting for the last minute to say anything is the way to go cause if the band won’t announce anything, someone else will. Giving the band more control over the things they want to put out when they’re ready. Seems backwards but it’s really not. It’s the same concept as throwing someone under the bus lol. There’s much more business than most people realize. Sardy started teasing right after they missed Cardiff and Bondy’s statement. I fully see it as him saying “they’re busy in the studio which is why they’re not playing Cardiff, don’t worry and surprise!” very subtly. Makes e fully convinced their silence is a form of marketing. Sardy’s not a part of the band he can be trusted to some degree because he’s worked with the band before.
You can spend years asking “why can’t Catfish just say something?” or try to understand that silence drives us to want more and that translates to immense hype, sales, attention and much more when they return. I mean seriously, if Catfish came back today, you all would be in tears and throwing your money at them. Not “oh that’s cool they’re back. I love them”. There’s a lot of psychology that goes into the music business and industry as a whole. Hope this makes sense. Trying to condense this whole thing coherently is very difficult. - 🌴
No offence to Van but I don’t think he could be the lead guitarist (he would say so himself too!)
I can see all this but surely if they’re jetting off to LA weeks after cancelling a huge gig there must be someone driving it (management/record label) and if this was the case then why didn’t they utter a word about pulling out? Fans paid out literally thousands to see them, to cancel with no word and jet off to record an album seems very off. I know I probably don’t ‘get’ these shitty marketing tactics and I’m probably just still miffed on behalf of fans I’ve personally spoke to who were beyond gutted about wasting all their hard earned cash, but I struggle to get my head around it. I mean if this was true you don’t just decide to fly off to record across the world last minute - this would mean they knew they weren’t going to perform way before they pulled out.
The deathly silence surrounding the last minute cancellation felt to me personally like Van (and possibly Benji - who knows) were the sole survivors at the helm of a sinking ship 😢
I do totally get the anticipation thing and agree with this to an extent but I do wonder if leaving things too long would have a detrimental effect? Catb were and are big in the UK and have solid fanbases overseas but they aren’t AM level (who could dip out for years and come back as big and bold as ever.)
Aghhh I really don’t know, I would love to totally get behind this theory but I just feel kinda cautious to get too excited ya know? 😭

The Jesus Christ Superstar essay absolutely no one asked for.
Last weekend, I watched the pro-shot of the 2012 arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar starring Ben Forster, Tim Minchin, and Melanie C, because it was Easter and it was up on YT for the weekend. I never managed to do my annual listen-through of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass this year, as is my usual Easter tradition, so I figured “Why not watch/listen to this instead?” It was my first time seeing and hearing JCS in full, and Y’ALL, it has been living rent-free in my brain ever since. I have a mighty need to get my thoughts out, so here they are, in chronological order by song.
1) Prologue: I love the way JCS 2012 makes use of the arena video screen. The production design and concept clearly took a lot of inspiration from the “Occupy ______” movement, which makes it feel a bit dated now. But every single production of JCS is a product of its time period, so this is a feature and not a bug.
2) Heaven On Their Minds: This is a straight-up rock song. It wouldn’t be out of place on any rock and roll album released between 1970 and 2021, and it boggles my mind that Webber and Rice were both in their early twenties when they wrote it. Also, the lyric “You’ve begun to matter more than the things you say” hits hard no matter the year.
3) What’s the Buzz: A+ use of the arena screens again, this time bringing in social media to set the tone. Also, this song establishes right from the outset that Jesus is burnt out and T I R E D by this point in the story. Seriously, can we just let this man have a nap?
4) Strange Thing Mystifying: Judas publicly calls out Mary and Jesus claps back. Folx, get you a partner who will defend your honor the way Jesus defends MM in this scene. Also Jesus loses his shoes and is mostly barefoot for the remainder of the show.
5) Everything’s Alright: Okay, this is one of the songs I have A LOT to say about. First, it’s important to know that I was a church musician throughout all of my adolescence and into my early adulthood. The pianist at the services I usually played at was a top-notch jazz pianist, and also my piano teacher for about six years while I as in high school and undergrad. (Incidentally, I had a HUGE crush on his son, who was/is a jazz saxophonist and clarinetist and also played in the church band, but that’s a story for another day.) One of the hymns we played a few times a year was called “Sing of the Lord’s Goodness,” which is notable for being in 5/4 time. Whenever this hymn was on the schedule, it was usually the recessional, or the last song played as the clergy processed out and the congregation got ready to leave, so we were able to have some fun with it. After a couple verses the piano player and his son would usually morph it into “Take Five,” a famous jazz standard by Dave Brubeck which is also in 5/4 time. Anyway, the first time I listened to this song in full, it got to Judas’s line “People who are hungry, people who are starving,” and I sat bolt upright and went “HOLY SHIT THIS IS ‘SING OF THE LORD’S GOODNESS/TAKE FIVE.’” And I was ricocheted back in time to being fourteen and trying to keep up with this father/son duo in a cavernous Catholic church while simultaneously making heart-eyes at the son. Final note: This is the only song in the musical to feature all three leads (Jesus, Judas, and Mary Magdalene) and is mostly Jesus and MM being soft with each other in between bouts of Jesus and Judas snarling at one another.
6) This Jesus Must Die: I LOVE that all the villains in this production are in tailored suits. LOVE IT. Also, Caiaphas and Annas are a comedy duo akin to “the thin guy and the fat guy,” except in this case it’s “the low basso profundo and the high tenor.” Excellent use of the arena video screen again, this time as CCTV.
7) Hosanna: My background as a church musician strikes back again. It honestly took me two or three listens to catch it, but then I had another moment of sitting bolt upright and going “HOLY SHIT THIS IS A PSALM.” Psalms sung in church usually take the form of call-and-response, with a cantor singing the verses and the congregation joining in for the chorus. If I close my eyes during this song, I have no trouble imagining Jesus as a church cantor singing the verses and then bringing the congregation in for the “Ho-sanna, Hey-sanna” chorus.
8) Simon Zealotes: This is part “Gloria In Excelsis” and part over-the-top Gospel song. Honestly it’s not my favorite, but it marks an important mood change in the show. The end of “Hosanna” is probably Jesus at his happiest in the entire show, and then Simon comes in and sours the mood by trying to tip the triumphant moment into a violent one. Jesus is not truly happy again from this moment on.
9) Poor Jerusalem: Also not my fave. It kinda reads like Webber and Rice realized that Jesus didn’t have a solo aria in Act I, so they came up with this. But it has the distinction of containing the lyric, “To conquer death you only have to die,” which is the biggest overarching theme of the story.
10) Pilate’s Dream: Pontius Pilate might be the most underrated role in this entire show, and I love that this production has him singing this song while being dressed in judge’s robes.
11) The Temple: The first half of this is one of the campiest numbers in Act I, at least in this production, and it’s awesome. The second half is one of the saddest, as Jesus tries to heal the sick but finds there are too many of them. Also the whole scene is almost entirely in 7/8 time, which I think is just cool.
12) I Don’t Know How To Love Him: Mary Magdalene’s big aria, and one of the songs I knew prior to seeing the full-length show. This production has MM taking off her heavy lipstick and eye makeup onstage, mid-song, which is kind of cool. Melanie C says in a BTS interview that MM’s makeup is her armor, so this is a Big Symbolic Moment.
13) Damned For All Time: The scene transition into this song is played entirely in pantomime, and I love it. The solo guitarist gets to be onstage for a bit, A+ use of the video screen again to show Judas on CCTV, etc. Love it. And then this song is Judas frantically rationalizing what he’s doing, and what he’s about to do, with Caiphas and Annas just reacting with raised eyebrows and knowing looks.
14) Blood Money: This is where the tone of the show really takes a turn for the dark. I think this might be one of Tim Minchin’s finest moments as Judas, because his facial expressions and microexpressions throughout this scene speak absolute volumes. And the offstage chorus quietly singing “Well done Judas” as he picks up the money is a positively chilling way to end Act I.
15) The Last Supper: Act II begins with major “Drink With Me” vibes. (Except JCS came WAY before Les Miz, so it’s probably more accurate to say that “Drink With Me” has major “The Last Supper” vibes.) Jesus and Judas have their knock-down, drag-out fight, and it’s honestly heartbreaking, thanks again to Tim Minchin’s facial expressions. A well-done production of JCS will really convey that Jesus and Judas were once closer than brothers, even though their relationship is at breaking point when Act I begins.
16) Gethsemane: This is Jesus’s major showpiece and one of my faves. Jesus knows he has less than 24 hours to live, he knows he’s going to suffer, and worst of all, he doesn’t know whether it’s going to be worth it. It’s an emotional rollercoaster to watch and to perform, and it goes on for ages: something like 6 or 7 minutes. Fun fact: the famous G5 is not written in the score. Ian Gillan, who played Jesus on the original concept album, just sang it that way, so most subsequent Jesuses have also done it that way. Lindsay Ellis has a great supercut of this on YT. John Legend notably sang the line as written during the 2018 concert.
17) The Arrest: Judas’s Betrayer’s Kiss is played differently across different productions. The 2012 version is pretty tame - I’ve seen clips and gifs of other productions, including the 2000 direct-to-video version, where they kiss fully on the mouth and have to be dragged apart by the guards and it is THE MOST TENDER THING. Then the 7/8 riff from “The Temple” comes back and the 2012 version lets the video screen do its thing again as Jesus is swarmed by reporters.
18) Peter’s Denial: Not much to say about this one, as it’s basically a scene transition. But it’s a significant moment in the Passion story, so I’m glad they included it.
19) Pilate and Christ: The 2012 production continues with the theme of Caiaphas, Annas, and Pilate all being bougie af, since Pilate intentionally looks like he just came from tennis practice during this scene. Also he does pilates...hehehe.
20) King Herod’s Song: Tim Minchin says in a BTS interview that JCS works best when Jesus and Judas are played seriously and the rest of the production is allowed to be completely camp and wild and bizarre all around them, and he is bloody well CORRECT about that. Case in point: King Herod. There is not a single production of JCS that I know of where Herod is played “straight.” He’s been played by everyone from Alice Cooper to Jack Black, and everyone puts a different zany spin on him. In JCS 2012 he’s a chat show host in a red crushed velvet suit, who is clearly having the time of his LIFE.
21) Could We Start Again Please: This is another of my faves. Just a quiet moment where MM, Peter, and the disciples try to grapple with the fact that Jesus is arrested and things are going very, very badly. This is also my favorite Melanie C moment of the 2012 show. Her grief is very real, and the little moment she has with Peter at the end is very real.
22) Death of Judas: This is basically Tim Minchin screaming for about five minutes, and incredibly harrowing to watch on first viewing.
23) Trial Before Pilate: Possibly my single favorite scene in the entire 2012 production. This is another harrowing watch, but there’s so much to take in. The “set” that the entire show takes place on is essentially just a massive staircase, and the people with power are almost always positioned above the people without power. In this scene, the crowd shouting “Crucify Him!” is positioned above Pilate, which is a very telling clue to Pilate’s psychology during this scene. Jesus is at the very bottom of the stairs, of course. Excellent use of the video screen once again during the 39 Lashes, to show the lash marks building and building until the entire screen is a wash of red. Pilate’s counting also gets more and more frantic, especially starting around “20.” And all the while the guitar riff from “Heaven On Their Minds” is playing. Jesus’s line “Everything is fixed and you can’t change it” is played quite differently in different productions - here it’s defiant, but elsewhere (in JCS 2000 for example) it’s almost tender, like Jesus is absolving Pilate for his part in the trial. But it always ends the same - with Pilate almost screaming as he passes the sentence and “washes his hands” of the whole sorry business.
24) Superstar: The most over-the-top number in the show. Judas, who died two scenes ago, comes back to sing this. There are soul singers. There are girls in skimpy angel costumes. The parkour guys from the prologue are back. Judas pulls a tambourine out of hammerspace midway through the song. And Jesus is silently screaming and crying as he gets hoisted onto a lighting beam while all this is going on.
25) The Crucifixion: More of a spoken-word piece than a song, it’s Jesus’s final words on the cross over eerie piano music, and another harrowing watch.
26) John 19:41: An instrumental piece in which Jesus is taken from the cross and carried, at last, to the top of the stairs, before being lowered out of sight as the video screen turns into a memorial wall and everything fades to black.
So. I know I’m anywhere from three to fifty-one years late to this particular party, but I am on the JCS bandwagon now and I’m thoroughly enjoying myself. :)

My Muse
Y/N was distraught.
She loved Harry, his music, his career and could not be more proud of him, his success and who he has become.
Although, she was struggling.
This whole album has been about Harry discovering himself, who he is... but also about his ex-girlfriend Camille.
Y/N knew about Harry everything he went through after their relationship ended, he was struggling greatly. They met around half a year after the break up, but she could see Harry was still struggling. She could see how he would keep to himself around new people, especially out in public. He was quite and wouldn’t speak out much, very different then how their mutual friend, Sarah had always described him.
Sarah has always talked highly of him, being in his band they grew very close and she often got to see how he went through his different writing processes. She saw him before and after shows and she knew him before and after Camille. Something Y/N could not relate to.
As time passed, the two got together, forming what their friends called a power couple. Harry and Y/N were completely inseparable, growing closer and closer as each day passed.
Harry opened up to her a few months into the relationship, sitting her down and letting her know exactly what happened in the relationship and why it was so difficult for him when it ended. He told her that since it was a huge part of the album, he might have to talk about it a bit, without saying names of course but she knew that everyone else already knew who he was going to be talking about.
“It’s okay, Harry. I totally understand. Don’t worry about it.” She would always say, giving him a smile and a soft kiss onto his jawline.
Y/N wasn’t lying, she did understand why and she didn’t want him to worry about her, not now. Not when his second album is taking off, hitting the top of the charts in preorder alone.
She did enjoy the majority of interviews. Hearing him tell funny stories of the writing process, or always getting emotional as he opens up about finding himself, his true sound and how he doesn’t feel like he needs to hold back anymore. But interview after interview, it got harder. Hearing him talk about the love he felt and then the unbearable pain after it was gone. She felt inadequate. Wondering if nothing went wrong, where would she be? Would Harry still fall for her when Sarah introduced him like he said he did?
Although, Y/N never brought up these concerns to him. Especially after the album drop he was on top of the world, explaining how he has never felt happier and more free, but she couldn’t help thinking if he would be happier with her by his side instead.
“Y/N, are you alright?” A voice brings her out, looking up and seeing Sarah standing there at the door, offering her a soft smile.
“Oh hi! Yeah, I’m totally fine don’t worry about me.” She nodded, looking back at the monitor, watching Harry messing around on stage with Mitch after finishing up a soundcheck nearly a minute ago. They often liked to stay for a while, messing around on stage, this often gave Sarah and Y/N sometime to catch up as their boys hung out together.
“Are you sure, sweetheart?” She asked, eyebrows furrowing as she sat next to her on the couch, “Cmon (Y/N), you know you can trust me with anything.”
“How’d Harry do?” She asked, trying to ease in, hearing Harry strum in the background to Cherry, causing Y/N to bite her bottom lip.
“Good... was just a sound check. Everything running fine- seriously what’s going on?” Sarah insisted, interrupting herself.
“What was he like? With her?”
A silence fills the room until Sarah let’s out a sigh, muttering a soft ‘oh honey’ before scooting closer, arms going around her friend protectively. Sarah knew she was struggling, but with it being such a difficult subject, she didn’t want to pry too much. She wanted to wait until Y/N was ready to confide in her, but instead she bottled it up.
“Fuck, sorry I shouldn’t have asked thats... sorry it’s none of my business.” Y/N quickly says, forcing a laugh and wiping her eyes, standing up quickly and going to look for her purse.
“You have nothing to apologize for. I know how hard this has been for you.” Her friend agrees, standing and following her, “have you and Harry talked about it? Talked about how this has been for you?”
Y/N shook her head, biting her lip hard as her eyes were squeezed shut, knowing if she spoke a word she would break down, she had been holding it in for too long.
“Do you wanna talk about it with him?”
She shrugged at this, honestly not knowing the answer. If she did, she didn’t know if Harry would stop all together, making his album less authentic or If he would be upset she held it in, or even said anything about it at all. But she genuinely didn’t know if she could hold it in any longer.
“You can tell me.” Sarah nodded, hugging her tightly, “let it out.”
“It hurts” Y/N breaks, letting out a sob, “it seems like- like all he talks about is her! And I know he wrote this whole thing before we met and- do you think he still loves her?”
“Y/N, no.” She says, pulling her back and wiping the tears from her friends face, “I’ve seen this man before, during and after both of you, and I have never seen him this happy. Ever”
She shakes her head, not believing her. “It can’t be me. It’s the album, the success! He’s himself now, so that’s what’s making him happy. I didn’t help him- she did.”
“Y/N stop” Sarah demanded, grabbing her shoulders and moving her hair out of her face, “Harry is in love with you! I remember him coming to me, asking me for advice when you went out on your first date.”
She shakes her head, disbelief and doubt being pumped through her veins, “it just doesn’t make sense! Look at her and then look at me. Who would you choose?”
“You”
“Stop.” She argues, rolling her eyes, “she’s skinnier and prettier and older! She’s way older than me, way older than him. Is that what he wants? I’m younger than him, Sarah. Young enough where there’s a million articles about it.”
“You’re going to make yourself sick if you don’t calm down.” Sarah demands, “please? Just calm down and we can talk about this. What does your age have to do with anything? You’re so beautiful, Y/N.”
“No, I should stop. Mitch and Harry will be back any second.” She sniffles, looking at herself in the mirror and sighing, dabbing at the skin around her eyes to try and depuff them.
“You can’t hold this in.” Sarah whispers, hugging her friend again, “please? Talk to me?”
“I love him and it’s scary because I don’t know-“ Y/N begins but quickly stops, hearing her boyfriends loud laughter, soon getting louder as he opened the door.
Y/N shoots Sarah a sympathetic look, silently begging her to remain quiet and not say a word, which she nods, giving Mitch and Harry a smile as they walk in the door, each boy going to each of them.
“Hey babe!” Harry smirks, kissing her before pulling back, eyebrows furrowing together and he lowers his voice, “are you alright? You look like you’ve been crying.”
“I’m okay!” She smiles, “poked my eye when I was fixing my makeup. Anyways, what are you guys up to?”
“We were gonna go grab some food before the show! Where do you wanna go?” He asks, hands going around her waist.
“Oh I’m not hungry.” She quickly responds, “been feeling a bit off all day so I might stay behind. I wanna feel better for your show.”
Harry frowns, pulling her closer to him before leading her out of the lounge room, leaving Mitch and Sarah as they continue their own conversation. Harry leads her off to his private dressing room.
“What’s up?” He frowns, lifting his hand to her face and rubbing her cheek softly, “what happened?”
“Nothing, Harry.” She smiles, her heart growing at his concern. Yet, she knows she can’t tell him. Not now, hours before his mini Fine Line show in London. The last thing she wants to be is a distraction, “don’t worry about me, really! And I feel like I’ve been budging in too much, go bond with the band!”
“You’re not interrupting anything. I want you here.”
“I know and I appreciate that, really, love being around you and everybody.” She giggles, “but I’m not gonna be there the whole tour and I gotta get used to that.”
“I wish you could be.” He frowns, pulling her right against his chest, “always want you next to me.... or below me.”
“Harry!” She laughed, pulling back and playfully pushing him, “you’re crazy.”
“Crazy for you, my love.” He dopily smirks, kissing her, softly.
She giggled against his lips, pulling him closer for another, each kiss making her worries drift further and further away. Mind reeling as his hands fall down her waist, gripping her bum as he pushes her closer, his lips falling down to her neck.
“Hey man, Sar-“ Mitchs voice causing them to jump away from each other, the three of them turning red as he clears his throat, “Um- sorry. I was just saying that Sarah said she’s gonna take a nap before the show too so I think it’s just just gonna be us and the other guys.”
“Sounds good!” He smirks, feeling a bit smug after what Mitch just walked in on, he turns back to Y/N, tucking a hair behind her ear, “you can stay in here if you want, lock the door and take a nap or whatever you need. Nobody should bother you and I’ll be back before you know it. Okay?”
She nodded, thanking him before pressing a kiss to his lips, “I love you, Harry.”
“I love you more, babygirl.” He smiles, kissing the top of her head before waving goodbye, following Mitch out.
She sighs, falling back on the couch and closing her eyes, mind muddled with confusion. Moments like that make her feel so silly, wondering why she ever worried in the first place. She does trust Harry, she doesn’t worry about him going out to try and find someone else, but she always wonders if he prefers to be with her, just has Y/N because he doesn’t have that option anymore.
She can’t help but lay awake, spending many sleepless nights just comparing herself to her. Camille was beautiful, and nobody could deny that. She had such grace and Y/N felt like her French accent and demeanor made her much more interesting then her own plain American ways. She wonders if Harry wishes Y/N was older, rather than being multiple years younger. She wondered if it annoyed him, bothered him that she had a great lack of experience. Harry was all she’d ever known and all she wants forever.
But did he feel the same? Did he actually love her? Does he actually find her as beautiful as he said? She found it hard to believe, especially seeing all he has had in the past. It makes her feel guilty, guilty for feeling so upset and hurt by seeing and hearing about people he was with prior, even though they’d never met at the time.
The door swings open, startling her and causing her to jump and heart to pound as she prepared what she would say next to Sarah, but it wasn’t her, it was Harry.
“What? What are you doing here?” She rushes, clutching her chest to try and calm her racing heart, I thought you were going to get food? Did you forget something?”
“Yes.” He mumbles, sinking down onto the couch next to her and holding her face in his hands, “I forgot to tell you how important you are to me. More than any album, place on the charts, anything.”
“W-what? Where is this coming from, Bubs?”
“Sarah told me what you said to her.” He frowns, eyes sparkling, “and I’m the biggest fucking arsehole I didn’t stop to talk to you about it once. To stop and actually ask you about it.”
“Harry, really, I’m just being-“
“Y/N listen, you are the best thing to ever happen to me. You’re my person. You’re it for me.” He whispers, leaning his forehead against her, tears forming in her eyes as she’s filled with so many emotions, “you gotta believe me, lovie.”
“I love you, Harry.” She sniffles, “I believe you, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong. This is all my fault. I should’ve talked to you more, I didn’t even think about how hard this would be for you, I’m so sorry.” He rambles, “you are the love of my life Y/N. Yes, I was in love before but this? With you? It’s so strong and real and terrifying. I’ve never felt this before. I want to be with you. Forever. Nobody else. And I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am to not have made that clear.”
“I should’ve told you from the beginning how I felt.” She admits, “I don’t want you to stop talking about it in interviews if that’s what you want to say, you should say it. It’s just really hard to hear you talk about her all the time.”
“I’m sorry my love. I don’t deserve you, don’t deserve your support.” He whispers, kissing her hands, “I am so beyond lucky to have you. You are the most beautiful, kind, considerate woman in the whole world. I don’t know how I got you.”
“Stop it.” She blushes, bringing her hands away from his lips and up to his face, shaking her head in disbelief, wondering how he even existed, “you are truly the most perfect man.”
“Now you stop.” He chuckles, cheeks turning pink, “I’m praising you here... really though love. You are my muse. I have millions of songs written about you.”
“Really?” She whispers, eyes wide, “you’re not just saying that?”
“What do you think Mitch and I are doing all the time?” He laughs, “we make Sarah go because we know she’d tell!”
“Well you’re right, because she told you what I said after I told her not too.” She blushes, looking down at her lap.
“Oh stop that you know she did the right thing.” He laughs, dragging her a bit closer to him so her legs lay over his lap, “Honestly, I was scared to show you them, thought I was open before wait till you hear these.”
“Can I? Can I hear them? Please?”
“I guess since you have good manners.” He smirks, pulling her on top of him. She giggles and he pulls her onto his lap, “you can hear ‘em all. Don’t know what I was waiting for... guess I was just scared?”
“Of what, Bubby?” She frowns, arms resting around his shoulders as she looks up at him.
“I don’t know... I just... I know you’re the one, so it’s kinda scary I guess...not knowing if you feel the same.”
“I do.” She squeaks, “I love you so much- wanna be with you forever.”
“Yeah?” He smirks, squeezing her hips tight causing her to squeal, falling into him, “I’ve been yours since the day we met. You inspire me, Y/N. You are my muse. I’d choose you over anyone. You are my priority.”
He leans in, kissing her softly, almost as if he was afraid of breaking her in two. His lips fell to her neck, sucking on her favorite spot and her grip tightened on him, head falling to the side a bit and she lets out a soft whimper.
“Harry, please...” she squeaked, hips pressing down into him involuntarily.
“I’m gonna take care of you.” He whispers lowly, pulling up the bottom of her dress and over her head, “gonna take care of you until the day I die, my love.”

BREAKING: Y/N officially departs FRNZEE & terminates contract with Hot Star Entertainment!
After two months of speculation of whether Y/N would return to FRNZEE after being attacked outside the KBS building, it's been confirmed by Hot Star Entertainment that Y/N has officially terminated her contract with the company. Y/N was recently involved in controversy after her company confirmed dating rumors between Y/N and BTS' leader RM that the latter denied. She had been removed from the group's comeback and was on hiatus from all activities when she was attacked by BTS fans outside the KBS building during a taping of Music Bank that she had attended with her manager out of support for her members. Despite official statements being released by both Big Hit Entertainment and RM – who uploaded a handwritten plea on Weverse begging for his fans to stop the bullying – Hot Star Entertainment felt that Y/N's mental health was being compromised and released her from contract.
“Like they give a shit about my mental health,” you snicker sarcastically, dropping your phone a little too forcefully onto the kitchen counter. From your peripheral, you can see your mother's lips turn downwards in disapproval at your foul language but she fortunately chooses not to scold you, recognizing the delicate situation. It's not as if this is a blindside. Nobody was pulling the wool over your eyes right now. You had been aware that they were permanently removing you from the group and from the company only one day after you returned home to Daejeon.
You're only surprised that they waited this long to announce it. You imagine it wouldn't look too good for them if they kicked you out of the group right after you were assaulted – no surprise there. Their image is all they care about.
“Has anyone tried reaching out to you?” your mother asks from the stove, stirring a steaming pot languidly.
Your eyes fall down to your still-lit phone, catching the small red balloon icon that signifies missed notifications. Calls, texts, voicemail, emails; you don't need to open them to see who they're from – you've spent the past week dodging any incoming forms of communication from everyone including your members, your former manager, the CEO of Hot Star, numbers that you don't recognize that you assume to be reporters and even all seven members of BTS.
Out of all the names that showed up on the screen on your phone, Namjoon's appeared the most.
His unread messages and unopened voicemails feel like an anchor on your chest. Is he reaching out to pity you for what happened with his fans? Is he reaching out to get back together with you? Is he reaching out to cuss at you because you dragged his name into your articles again? Is he reaching out to hammer that final nail in the coffin and be done with you for good?
All of these scenarios are equally terrifying so you pretend that the messages don't exist. However, there are times when you miss him so much that your chest physically aches and the thought of loading up your phone's inbox to listen to his voice is so devastatingly tempting. Playing his albums or watching him on YouTube isn't the same. You don't miss RM – you miss Namjoon. Your Namjoon.
You're not completely depriving yourself of him, though. Two months ago, the day of your attack, he posted a message messily scrawled onto a napkin to his Weverse account. Despite his username displaying as RM, your heart can tell just by his words that it's Namjoon. You've stared at the message so many times over the past few weeks that you have the words ingrained into your head.
ARMY,
Today, somebody I care about was seriously injured. I want to deny that our lovely ARMY would do anything to cause harm to other people. That's not Bangtan. That's not what we teach, what we stand for. But that was our logo on their phone cases. That was our lightstick in the pocket of their bags. That was our faces on keychains that hung from their straps. At the risk of upsetting some, I speak on behalf of the rest of the group to say to those who harm other people in the name of Bangtan – both physically and verbally – you are not ARMY. ARMY is better than this. ARMY is too good for this.
Please ARMY, let's always be better.
It's a simple message but one that you know was difficult for him to write. Having known the boys for the majority of their career growth, you know that the admiration they have for their fans is one-hundred percent not an act. Knowing that some of them assaulted you in such a humiliating manner had to have felt like a knife in the gut.
“Nobody,” you lie to your mom who quirks her brows, waiting for your response. “Nobody has tried contacting me at all.”
“When are you going back to Seoul?”
You sigh, dropping your eyes onto the kitchen counter. “Mom, why would I go back to Seoul? There's nothing there for me anymore.”
“What are you going to do then?” your mother asks softly. You hear the spoon she was stirring with drop the table, followed by a heavy sigh. “Is that it? You're done with your music career?”
“It isn't as if my contract just expired and I can shop around for new agencies. I was the center of a very huge scandal. I was the butt of jokes and online bullying for so long. I don't think there's an agency out there that would poke me with a ten foot pole at this point.”
“But you trained for so long. You didn't go to university. Y/N, what -”
Your body slides from the stool, your feet slapping against the linoleum so hard that your mother flinches from the sound. “I'm suddenly feeling kind of sleepy. I'll just go take a nap before dinner.”
She calls your name as you lug yourself upstairs towards your bedroom but you pretend not to hear. You're not angry with her – absolutely not. If you're angry at anything, it's your life. It's this situation. It's the world. It's a fact that most idols audition and join agencies for two things and two things only – money and fame. And while those two things can be really great at times, that's not why you decided to be an idol. You decided to become an idol because, well … there was really nothing else you could do.
Throughout your life, whenever anybody asked you “what do you want to be when you grow up?” you never gave the usual answers that your classmates did – police officers, veterinarians, doctors, lawyers, judges, the president. Your answer from the first time you were asked until the last remained unchanged: an idol. Music was everything to you. There was nothing that you could study for, nothing you could major in that would give you a sense of happiness and fulfillment like music did. Like music still does. It was the upbeat songs, the quirky choreography, the super cute but super outrageous outfits, the camaraderie and bonds formed between group members and the thrill of satisfaction when all of that came together for a comeback. That is what you've always wanted. There was nothing that came even close.
And now that you've had it, now that it's slipped right through your fingers … what do you do? What are you supposed to do with your life?
Heaving yourself onto your bed, you groan in frustration. Your phone chirps from the pocket of your hooded sweatshirt, alerting you to a text message. Waving the device in front of your face, you sigh when you see Ji-na's name.
Ji-na: please be strong. keep your head up. don't skip meals. i love you and i'm sorry.
Your chest throbs are you reread the words again. And then for a third time. If you were being honest with yourself, you stopped being angry with Ji-na and the rest of the group the moment you arrived home. If you were to put yourself in their shoes – would you have reacted the same way? An idol's career is already typically short; seven or eight years if you're lucky. Would you be willing to risk that for another person? The knee-jerk response might come easy to some but only those who have been in your shoes, trained as long and hard as you and your members did, can answer that question. But despite not holding onto any anger, you can't erase the betrayal from your heart. Ji-na was more than just a member of your group. Ji-na was your best friend. Ji-na was the hand that you reached for when FRNZEE was getting mobbed at airports. Ji-na is your first dibs sleeping buddy when you had to pair up in hotel rooms. There was very little that you couldn't and wouldn't tell Namjoon but if there was – Ji-na was the one you confided in. Ji-na was everything.
And going through this without her and Namjoon seems incredibly impossible.
Your eyes leave the phone, slipping over to the corner of the room where your suitcase and bags are haphazardly strewn about as you were too lazy to commit to unpacking. The one thing propped neatly against the wall is a sparkly, medium-sized gift bag, intricately tied with rainbow ribbons. Ji-na's birthday is coming up in week but you've had her present ready for months. Instead of leaving it at the dorms, you brought it home with you. At the time, you were so caught up in your anger and woes and self-misery that you had every intention of sending it back to the store once you settled in but now?
It seems you have a present to hand deliver.

- TWO WEEKS LATER -
You've only been gone for two months but it seems like Seoul has already changed so much. The first big difference? There's now a doorman stationed in the lobby of the dorm apartments. You can tell that he recognizes you immediately by the way his cheeks flush red but he still refuses to let you go any farther, keeping you a safe distance away from the elevator. You get it, you really do. He was probably hired to keep out nosy reporters and fansites and journalists but knowing Hot Star the way that you do now, you have no doubt that he was also explicitly warned not to let you in. Sighing, you pull your phone from your bag, typing a few quick words to Ji-na before hitting send.
It only takes three minutes for the elevator to open with a loud ding and a flash of pale skin is hurtling itself at you. Ji-na wraps her arms around your neck so tightly that you cough from the pressure until she loosens her grip. You try to ignore the moisture that you see building in her eyes when she pulls away.
Grabbing her hand, she tugs you toward the elevator. “Come on. We have some talking to do.”
“Ah -” the doorman interjects, nervously stepping in front of you. “I'm sorry, Ji-na. She's on the no clearance list. She can't go up.”
Ji-na scoffs. “Even with my permission? Even though I'm bringing her up with me?”
He grimaces. “I'm sorry. It's my job.”
“It's okay, Ji-na. I just wanted to drop this off anyway,” you say, thrusting the bag in her direction. She stares at it for a few hard seconds before hesitantly accepting it. “Happy Birthday. If you're ever near Daejeon, let me know, okay?”
You turn on your heel to leave but a painful grip on your hand stops you. Ji-na twirls you around to face her, like a scene straight out of a cheesy drama. She's toe to toe with the doorman, facial features locked in what you know is supposed to be intimidation but on Ji-na it just looks like an angry kitten.
“If you won't let her upstairs, let's compromise. Your office?” she quirks an eyebrow, head jutting toward the door behind his podium. He contemplates this offer for a moment before relenting with a sigh, dropping a pair of keys into her hand.
“Don't tell your management about this, okay? She's not even supposed to be in the building at all.”
Ji-na throws him an obnoxious salute before yanking you into the room.

Your heart-to-heart is long and full of anger, accusation, revelations, tears, laughter, giggling and so much more. While you're not ready to completely forgive her for leaving you behind that day, you've accepted the reality that Ji-na is one of the only friends that you have and you're not ready to let her go. She understands your continuing edginess with the situation and promises to do everything in her power to regain your trust and make it up to you.
You expected to leave with a heavier heart than you came with. Instead, most of the weight has lifted.
You only exit the doorman's office after Ji-na receives a text from one of her managers about a project meeting the group has soon. Her arm is around your side as she walks you to the front door, squeezing you tightly. “Please come visit a lot more. We have some off time coming up – would you mind terribly if I came to stay with you in Daejeon?”
You roll your eyes but your smile stays wide. “No, I wouldn't mind terribly. Just give me a heads up so I can stock up on soju and shrimp chips.”
She throws her head back to laugh loudly, bumping her hip to yours as the two of you take a few more steps toward the front door. “Yes! You know me so well! And you also have to make sure that you have tons of-”
“Y/N.”
The voice is jarring but immediately recognizable. Lifting your head, you meet the eyes of your previous manager. The last time you had seen him, he was loading your belongings into the back of a car that would send you right home. He gapes at you, gaze wide and shocked. Behind you, the doorman audibly groans.
“Um, he has nothing to do with this,” you hurriedly declare, throwing your thumb behind you in the groaning man's direction. “He was in the process of kicking me out, I swear. He's very good at his job. You guys should give him a raise. Okay, bye.”
You squeeze Ji-na's hand one final time before moving to scurry out of the building. For the second time today, fingers wrap around your wrist and pull you backward. You sigh as you yank your hand away. “A simple 'wait! stop!' would suffice. Why is everyone so grabby today? Look, I was just dropping off a birthday present for Ji-na. I promise that the doorman didn't let me go upstairs.”
“Y/N, I don't care about the doorman. I have something for you,” he says quickly before reaching into the tote bag that hangs around his shoulder. He rummages somewhat frantically for a few seconds before producing a business card, raising it into the air with pride and beaming as if it was the cure to a zombie outbreak. “You remember me telling you about one of my old co-managers for a different group who quit Hot Star and started working for P NATION?”
Your eyebrows furrow in confusion. This was not the greeting that you expected out of your former manager.
“Um … I think so. He's one of Hyuna's managers now, you said.”
“Yes!” he screeches, his chest heaving as if he has just finished running a marathon. You exchange a glance with Ji-na who looks equally perplexed. “Yes, he works with Hyuna. And he called me last week and said that Hyuna heard about everything that happened to you in the news. And so she started looking you up on YouTube and she thinks you're really talented and wants your contact information.”
It takes a few seconds for your brain to register everything that he has just said considering how quick, breathless and jumbled his words are. Ji-na is elbowing you excitedly in the ribs.
“I've tried asking Hot Star for your address but they wouldn't tell me anything. I was literally coming here to ask Ji-na to try to reach out to you so I could pass the information along but here you are! It's like fate!”
Ji-na throws her elbow much deeper this time, accompanying the jab with a sharp screech. You can see that there's something exciting happening but your brain isn't putting it all together yet.
“Um, why does Hyuna want my contact information? You said she heard about my situation in the news so she must know that I'm not with FRNZEE anymore, right? Or any company, for that matter. We can't collab or anything like that.”
Manager and Ji-na groan in unison, so in sync that it seems rehearsed.
“Y/N, please, are you really this dense? Do I need to dumb this down for you?”
You grimace but bat your eyelashes hopefully. “Would you?”
She sighs, slapping her hands down hard onto your shoulders. “Hyuna was kicked out of Cube for a dating scandal. Psy – who founded P NATION – signed her right after. You were kicked out of Hot Star for a dating scandal. And now Hyuna is contacting you. I mean, I'm just speculating here but there's no way this is a coincidence.”
Wait.
If she's saying what you think she's saying then …
Hyuna wants to contact you … to sign you … to P NATION?
All you were here to do was to drop off Ji-na's birthday present. After this, you were going to stop into a few cosmetic stores to stock up on some harder-to-find products and then treat yourself to a well-deserved oreo bingsu before heading home. Talking to Hyuna – arguably one of the most popular and influential females in the k-pop industry ever – about possibly signing with Psy's new agency was not in the forecast.
Realizing your stunned state, Manager smirks smugly, lifting your hand to drop the business card into before wrapping your fingers around it and letting it fall.
The card feels like fire in your palm.
“Y/N,” Ji-na's voice breaks through your haze. You glance up at her silently, her warm smile only heightening your nervousness. “Go home and call her. Listen to what she has to say or what she has to … offer. Okay? And then call me and tell me every little detail.”
“You guys, that can't be right. Hyuna and Dawn's scandal was different – they both admitted to being in the relationship. Nobody bullied or laughed at them. I … I'm a joke. Why would P NATION want to sign me? Do you think they're just going around plucking up poor little k-pop idols who are mistreated by their labels? No, they're smarter than that. They-”
A hand – belonging to either Manager or Ji-na, you're not sure which one – whacks you upside the head. The strength of the blow is painful but it has its desired affect – it shuts you right up.
“Stop it, Y/N,” Manager scolds. “What happened to you wasn't fair and we all know it. You worked so hard for FRNZEE and maybe this is your good karma. Maybe this is ...”
“Fate!” Ji-na squeals hysterically.

An hour later, you're sitting in the corner of the cafe by yourself, a heaping bowl of bingsu untouched in front of you. Instead, your eyes focus on the card that you've set down onto the table. You wonder if this is a prank; if someone from Hot Star is getting one last act of cruel revenge on you before parting ways completely.
But what if it's not?
What if this is what was always supposed to happen? Everything that has happened to you, everything that you've been through, everything that you've lost … was it for this? Half of you jitters in happiness at the prospect of being signed to a label that houses some of the greats – Psy, Hyuna, Jessi. But the other half of you mourns what you had to give up for this.
Namjoon.
Was this opportunity supposed to make you grateful for losing him? Are you supposed to feel like your breakup served some kind of purpose now?
It didn't. Most of the happiest moments you can remember are either with Namjoon or because of Namjoon. If the choice was your idol career or Namjoon then …
Why do you have to make a choice? Why can't you have both? Why is that wrong?
For the first time, you shift your eyes away from the P NATION logo and onto the phone number scrawled messily onto the bottom of the card.
Lifting your phone, you dial with trembling fingers.

Toto -- "Africa" -- February 5, 1983
This song becoming massively popular recently sort of mystifies me. But maybe it shouldn't; the music is very pretty, and we've been short on popular music that goes for "pretty" for a long time. The lyrics... I really don't know. The best explanation I've seen was someone joking on Tumblr that maybe the narrator's a werewolf. I'm sure that wasn't the intent, but it's what I'm going with. It is a good song, entirely because of the music.
Patti Austin and James Ingram -- "Baby, Come to Me" -- February 19, 1983
I'm not sure I've ever heard this song before. It's a romantic duet. It's not annoying or anything, it's fine, but now that I've heard it I think I'm probably about to forget it again immediately.
Michael Jackson -- "Billie Jean" -- March 5, 1983
This song, I've heard. A whole hell of a lot. Like everyone else, we had the Thriller album (or tape, rather.) Actually I had it -- for some reason, Thriller was seen as some kind of child's first pop album. Every kid I knew had it. (And since seeing Leaving Neverland, that has been very creepy to me.) As for me, I'd put it on and dance, especially to this song. I pretty much understood what the song was about, and even got the "His eyes looked like mine" line. I didn't have an opinion on whether or not the kid was his son. It didn't matter; it was entirely about the music. Which is truly great.
Dexys Midnight Runners -- "Come On Eileen" -- April 23, 1983
Until the last couple years, I didn't entirely know what this song was about, because I couldn't understand Kevin Rowland's weird singing outside the chorus. I got that he wanted Eileen, and that this was about the combination of arrogance and horniness of youth. I did not know about all the references to the previous generation's pop culture, with an obvious inference that they felt the same way at one time. Also about Margaret Thatcher's intentional destruction of her own country's society. You don't have to think about any of that to enjoy the song if you don't want to, though. It's a fun dance song as well as being complex lyrically.
Michael Jackson -- "Beat It" -- April 30, 1983
This is the Michael Jackson song I remember being played on the radio by far the most when I was a child. It's basically the main background song of a couple years of my childhood. It's a hard-driving song about how you should run away from a physical fight rather than die. "It doesn't matter/ Who's wrong or right." Yes. It's rock, and it's dance, and it's... probably really great? I don't know, some things are too formative.
David Bowie -- "Let's Dance" -- May 21, 1983
"Put on your red shoes and dance the blues" makes no sense. But this is David Bowie; he knew that. It's part of the point. While this song is perfectly feasable to dance to, it's not really a dance song. It's achingly romantic and not the tiniest bit soppy, with music that's both accessible and fascinating. And my god Bowie could sing. I love it so much.
Irene Cara -- "Flashdance... What A Feeling" -- May 28, 1983
I didn't see Flashdance until college, when my roommates decided we would watch a bunch of cheesy 80s movies because it seemed a brilliant thing to do. It was, actually. Some of them even turned out to be good. Not Flashdance. Flashdance is memorably stupid, at least -- it doesn't hold back. It's extremely entertaining because it's deeply unintentionally hilarious. This song, though, I've heard a lot since it came out. The song is much better than the movie. It's got a wide-eyed optimism that's appealing, and the music is fun.
The Police -- "Every Breath You Take" -- July 9, 1983
I remember people periodically insisting that many, many women don't understand this song and think it's just romantic. I have never met any of these women. I have a feeling it was only a few, and that got blown up into some kind of crisis, as things do. Especially when people can imagine angelic airheaded women being dumb and somehow inviting abuse from those scary scary men. That's a favorite hobby for many. Anyway. It's a really good song that gets into the mindset of a really bad man -- or of a man who's currently imagining being really bad but is going to wake up, deal with his hangover, and get on with life. It's not a comfortable song, and that is good. Also Sting's hot.
Eurythmics -- "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" -- September 3, 1983
Usually repetitive songs drive me nuts. This song is incredibly repetitive lyrically. I love the lyrics, though. And musically, it changes up just enough to keep my interest. It's almost hypnotic. Apparently, Annie Lennox can do whatever she likes with me. Speaking of "some of them want to be abused"...
Michael Sembello -- "Maniac" -- September 10, 1983
The original demo of this song was about a serial killer, and it sounds like it, with the Psycho-like musical parts. It's not a dance song at all. Michael Sembello worked with Stevie Wonder during his best years, but he's no Stevie Wonder. He has that 70s light rock white guy voice, and it doesn't fit this song. If he'd handed this to another singer, it would have been better. Though still goofy, because it's music about a serial killer wedded to a story about a dancer. Many of the lines don't seem to have been changed either: "On the ice-blue line of insanity/ Is a place most never see." And okay, that's a good line; I wouldn't want to leave it out either.
Also my aunt is a professional dancer (mostly choreographer now), so I've seen quite a bit into the professional dance world, and it is seriously unhealthy. It seems to be getting better, at least in modern dance, but the reason my aunt didn't go farther as a ballerina and switched to modern dance is that she could not get skinny enough for the fashion in ballet, no matter what she did. We're a muscular family with solid bones, and she couldn't get rid of that. She's got an eating disorder still though. Professional dance is harsh and terrible, and probably kills more women than serial killers do.
That's what I think of when I hear this song.
Billy Joel -- "Tell Her About It" -- September 24, 1983
Billy Joel's best songs didn't make it to #1, but that's almost always the way. This bouncy throwback of a song is still fun. With most excellent advice: "Tell her about it/ Tell her everything you feel/ Give her every reason/ To accept that you're for real." (It occurs to me that my husband is the first guy I dated who did that actually while we were dating, as opposed to waiting until after we broke up. Most of the guys I dated did not take in "I will not get back together with you if we break up." Not my fault; I told them about it.) Anyway, this isn't as good as "Big Shot," or "You May Be Right," or "My Life," or a whole lot of other Billy Joel songs I like a lot better, but it's pretty good.
Bonnie Tyler -- "Total Eclipse of the Heart" -- October 1, 1983
Melodrama, I love it. This song is so Great -- big, fantastical, unembarrassed, and awesome in both meanings of the term. Bonnie Tyler knows her strengths and has no hesitation about using that huge voice, and yet she doesn't oversing, either. The lyrics? Hell if I know. To me, it sounds like that part of a relationship where you're losing yourself and can't think about anything but the other person, and especially about having sex with the other person. But whatever else it is, it's poetry. And big thunder crashes. Which is a lot like falling in love. It's not necessarily happy. It just is.
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton -- "Islands In the Stream" -- October 29, 1983
Going from "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to this song induces emotional whiplash. The opening goes "Baby, when I met you/ There was peace unknown." That's the exact opposite of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." What is the same as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is that the lyrics make no actual sense -- but of course they don't, this thing was written by the Bee Gees. Nonsensical lyrics can be poetic, but the Bee Gees didn't do poetry, at least not good poetry. Oh well, it's probably their most tolerable song. It's a sweet and light song, and I'm sure the narrators will be very happy together. They sound exceedingly "emotionally healthy." But as art, I prefer the "Total Eclipse of the Heart" take. Also I think this song might have been better with just Dolly Parton. Kenny Rogers was good, but he couldn't match Dolly.
Lionel Richie -- "All Night Long" -- November 12, 1983
Lionel Richie puts on a fake Jamaican accent for this thing. Also he makes up pseudo-African chants. I'm not going to go all "j'accuse!", at least not of problematicicity. No, I am accusing him instead of being annoying. Also dull. This is a party song, but an extremely boring one. Also Richie kind of tries to do an "ow" thing, obviously inspired by Michael Jackson, but of course it doesn't work. It's still not terrible. Unlike all the gloop Richie made, I can listen to the whole thing. The drums -- or drum machine, rather -- have a neat beat, and there are some good horns and other musical touches.
Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson -- "Say Say Say" -- December 10, 1983
Well this is weird. I can't remember ever having heard this song before. The song is about begging someone not to "play games with my affection." And it sounds like the two men are singing to each other, regardless of the lyric about getting through to a "girl." It's not bad -- Michael Jackson gives Paul McCartney the musical edge that he'd lost as soon as he left the Beatles. Strong beat, harmonica and all. But I'm not going to seek it out, either. I think the beat's too repetitive. Also it feels too busy.
BEST OF 1983 -- "Let's Dance" by David Bowie, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, and "Sweet Dreams" by The Eurythmics. Great year for the pop charts. WORST OF 1983 -- There aren't any that I think are truly terrible this year, so I guess I'll go with "Baby, Come to Me," because as predicted, I have already forgotten it.

So, long story short, yes. Yes I’m in the discord, yes I know what’s going on, and it’s all really, really stupid. I think that there were mistakes made on a lot of fronts, but I also think that the end result is, in a lot of ways, a long time coming.
I haven’t been responding to things I’ve seen on social media for the most part, and wasn’t REALLY keen to respond to this, but there’s also a lot of misinformation happening due to hurt feelings. There’s plenty of abridged accounts of what’s going on, and I’m pretty sure you know that. I’m taking this question on good faith that it’s genuinely asking and not setting me up to get torn down but...honestly, either way, I don’t care. I’m not on tumblr much these days anyway so it doesn’t really matter, and internet drama is just….it’s always dumb. But there’s a lot of “evidence” being put forth that is out of context or in bad faith, and the people who are being the loudest are a whole lot of the problem, so I’ll put in my account and opinions.
Anyway, I’m putting everything under a cut because it’s...a lot.
So first off, full disclosure, I used to be a mod on the discord. I left the team at the beginning of the year of my own volition because I’m an adult with a job and a life and things to take care of that aren’t that and needed a break. I’m still friends with all the current mods, and talk to them regularly, as well as being on good terms with the cast and creators. Just in case you’re dead set on hating any of them, you should know that. I try to keep a pretty good perspective, and I’m a little more removed than I was a few months ago, but I won’t say I’m totally free of bias either. If that’s what you’re into, just go ahead and skip this.
This all started with a piece of fan art, which honestly should be a clue as to how petty this all is. The fanart included The Dirt in a BDSM outfit as part of a larger work, and it was posted in the fanart section of the discord. It was bordering on NSFW, and the artist maybe should have asked the mods and/or put it behind a spoiler tag--which is probably as far as the mods would have gone had they been consulted, because it was 1) part of a larger thing and 2) canon compliant (it’s Jacob Williams, what do you want?). Neither of those things happened, people complained, the art was taken down. Then Kyle Brown, one of the writers, retweeted the copy that had been uploaded to twitter on his personal account--his account, not KFAM official--and someone complained that it made them uncomfortable and was not safe for work. Another cast member, Trent Shumway, replied that twitter isn’t a safe for work site, which it’s not. Which then led to both Kyle and Trent being socially crucified for not taking more care in what their followers see on their personal accounts on an open social media platform that is not dedicated to any single person or work.
It was already stupid. Really, really stupid. Especially since this is not a SFW podcast. It never has been. Everyone remember the third episode with Archie’s pomchies? And I know that certain aspects of that make people uncomfortable but if you are choosing to listen to the show regardless of that, it’s on you. An artist isn’t going to repaint something because you’re not a fan of green. And the SFW rule on the server has always been “within the guidelines of the show”.
So then, someone made this post that has since been deleted but I’m including mostly because if other people want to go ahead and pull receipts, I’m also going to.
Before I go ANY further with this, I want to say this: this person has been a problem for a LONG TIME. Months, at least, since before I left the mod team, and is honestly part of the reason being a mod became so difficult for me. They have displayed a pattern of abuse of the mods, the creators, and other members of the community on both twitter and tumblr, and have made people on the discord server uncomfortable enough that they either don’t participate or have left completely. This one person. And they have a bully squad behind them. And it sucks. But in the end, it was always decided that we couldn’t police what people did on their individual accounts or single someone out who hadn’t technically broken guidelines in the server, despite numerous complaints, because the mods and creators want to make everyone feel that they’re included. This decision was made...numerous times. After multiple incidents. For months.
I had my own issues with this decision, but that’s neither here nor there, and doesn’t really matter anymore. Because that post was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Kyle, misunderstanding the term, took it as a threat. Not hard to do, given the already heightened emotions, the tags, and this person’s history. So the person was immediately banned. The fact is, even without misunderstanding, that’s a really shitty post. That’s hating one a writer and a cast member and still wanting to pretend they have nothing to do with the THING THEY CREATE because this person doesn’t like what they said on twitter.
Following that, one of their friends--who had also been a longstanding problem--attempted to start a knockdown dragout in the general chat with one of the mods over this, and was upset when the mod in question first said they’d be happy to talk on DM but not on the server, and then ignored them when they repeatedly tried to carry on the argument.
Then they lit a candle in the channel the banned person had pitched a fit in order to form, as if the person was dead and not just a jerk. And then they made this post:
They also got banned, because OBVIOUSLY. Again, misunderstanding or not, that’s a horrible way to deal with it. You can’t possibly expect to call someone an illiterate fuckwad and still want to be included in spaces they created, much less EXPECT to be.
And then several other people who were attempting the same nonsense publicly. And then invites were taken away when the mods got word that there was a possible plan in the works to spam the server. And there’s a weird campaign to EXPOSE THE CREATORS FOR THE ASSHOLES THEY ARE.
And that’s...about where things are at now. A lot of people are upset and hurt across the board. And it sucks.
Here’s the thing. Mistakes were made. Kyle misunderstood Death of the Author, and has a tendency toward knee-jerk, unedited reactions. The mods should have been more on top of the problem and not let it fester. There were ways that this could have been mitigated and done better. There always are.
But this was always going to happen in some fashion.
Podcasts and podcast communities are not new anymore, folks. But it still seems like people have a hard time grasping their actual level of involvement in the creation because of how active some creators are. You’re free to say whatever you want, but you are not free from consequence. And you’re not exempt from being wrong. This isn’t just a matter of the creators of KFAM--or any work, to be honest--not being able to take criticism, this is a matter of people thinking that their criticism is 100% correct 100% of the time, and the entitled attitude that comes with that. KFAM isn’t perfect, I have my own criticisms of it, because I have criticisms about basically everything under the sun, so it’s not just blind following. But it is trust in the creators and the people around them to find the best way to tell their story, to the see their problems and strive for better. And we’ve literally seen that happen in KFAM, in changes made to Walt, in Emily’s storyline, in Lily’s...everything. In the addition of “guys, gals, and non-binary pals”. They’re trying. They’re not perfect, but they’re not deaf. They’re also not obligated or beholden to everything their audience says regarding their story.
The whole argument that they can’t take criticism is undercut when it’s being made by people who think that everything they say should be taken as gospel, and treat every instance where someone disagrees with them as a personal attack. The scope of hypocrisy here is just...breathtaking.
Also, when not withstanding some nonsense attacks, they’re all genuinely kind and friendly. I already admitted some bias here, but seriously, they go out of their way to check on people and respond to people and lift people up. It’s total horse dookie to act like they don’t care about their fans.
And as for the discord--god, just get a life. The mods there work SO HARD to make everyone feel included, to encourage participation, the create a positive environment for people to talk about the things they love and make friends. They have meetings and spreadsheets and calendars and work together as a team and with Kyle to keep the place working smoothly even though there’s FIVE of them running a HUGE server. The person who was initially banned was forever complaining about the discord and how the mods ran it, even while some suggestions they had were implemented. But that discord has like 1500 people in it, gang, it’s not about what one person wants all the time. And that person has their own server anyway so just go be unhappy there and leave everyone else alone. It’s what you were doing anyway.
TL;DR: There was a lot of manufactured outrage over something incredibly dumb, and some misunderstandings, and resulted in actions that had been looming for a long time and just finally popped off. Kyle and the mods aren’t perfect, but they aren’t the villains. The people who were banned have a history of negativity and bullying that led to the decision to remove them.
If anyone takes anything from this, please let it be that it’s a GODDAMN PODCAST. If it makes you angry, if you don’t like it, go watch a movie. Eat a snack. Knit a sweater. Take a nap. Listen to a new music album. Literally anything. There’s so many things to do in this life that aren’t LOOKING for things to be upset about.
Remember the golden rule, and don’t be a dick.

Tobias Forge, the founder of the Ghost band, has only recently been talking to the press without an anonymous mask. For years, he only showed himself publicly as Papa Emeritus, a devilish priest whose purpose was to free the world from the oppression of government and religion. Now, remaining true to his intentions, he is known as Cardinal Copia.
Bartek Czartoryski: You've been playing concerts almost continuously for a year. Tired?
Tobias Forge : Oh yes, and I already feel that when I go home on December 20, I will fall dead.
You played in Spodek, and it's almost an iconic place for us. Here, for example, Metallica gave their first Polish concerts, with which you recently shared the stage.
I am very happy that we played here. Until now, we went to Warsaw Stodola, where we played probably three times and always thought that it was damn unfair for the Polish audience, because it got a smaller spectacle than everyone else. And now, finally, we could present our entire arsenal, with all the effects, pyrotechnics and so on.
Poland is, after all, a conservative and Catholic country, and Ghost has always been against organized religion. You don't feel like on hostile territory because of that?
No, we have never experienced any form of resentment, which is why I am a bit surprised at why Nergal is so often abused here. However, I explain it to myself that he comes from this country and is widely known here, which is why the attention of the press and public opinion is focused on him every day. We encounter no resistance here, and Polish institutions are not trying to censor us.
And I point this out, among other things, because I am aware of the problems Adam sometimes has. I am anonymous. People may know Ghost, but not me personally. In turn, probably every person accidentally encountered on the street although heard about Nergal. He's the walking advertisement of the devil's alliance here, whatever you call it.
It's good that you mentioned the devil because you are the sexy face of Satanism.
I hope so! But, seriously, I didn't realize it until we started touring more often, especially in America. There I noticed that more and more women come to our performances. And then I had to confront my idea of what Ghost would ever become with what was actually happening.
Already on the first album, when the audience's reactions to my songs were quite good, I thought that something really cool could be born from it. But it wasn't until we went on the road to America and saw all these girls that I started to connect the dots, that maybe there was something in it that I didn't notice, which I didn't take into account.
I will not hide that one of the inspirations behind Ghost is the "The Phantom of the Opera" that I saw as a child, which seemed to me a romantic spectacle, but not necessarily charged with sexual energy. Except that soon my mother, with whom we flew to London, took me for "Cats." And that's pure sex. The whole scene is filled with attractive people in tight cat costumes. I was thirteen then and I fell in love with all the kittens one by one.
And when, playing overseas, I felt that corporeality was part of our performance, it enlightened me: since the audience has no idea what we look like, we can be anyone they want. They could have imagined me as George Clooney. However, this was not something I had planned. At first, our image was a bit clumsy, but when I noticed what we were talking about, I even thought that everyone would wear pants and move more around the stage. I put more emphasis on corporeality.
Speaking of concepts, I am curious about how the fusion of the musical and textual part looks with graphics, for which the Polish artist, Zbyszek Bielak, is responsible.
We have known Zbigniew for many years and we have learned to work with each other. When I compose and write lyrics, I like to have a clear outline of what the album will be about. That is why I need some starting points, such as cover and title, quite quickly. I don't want to lie, but I think we've already prepared everything before the recordings. Therefore, I hope that when I finish the tour after the tour, the cover will be ready and I will hang a large print on the wall. Only then will I be sure of the course I have chosen.
And as for the whole graphic design, because we plan to draw for virtually every song, it's organic work. I have now probably more than twenty invented songs, but these can change during further work. And it happens that I rewrite the text, change the title and then it may turn out that the graphics we have are better in line with the previous concept. But sometimes the opposite happens and I compose for drawing. So I am asking Zbigniew to come up with something that is consistent with the outline of my idea, not having a ready text, and then write, looking at the graphic. We do not have a predetermined work system, as I said, a living process.
You've come a long way with Ghost, breaking through the rungs of the rock career and wondering where you would now place yourself and the band? Far to the glass ceiling?
We are evolving, we have probably not reached the ceiling yet. It seems to me that only the next step will decide where we are going. We are getting used to the concept that we are becoming a band playing on large stages and the next, fifth album, which will start the next cycle of this evolution, will show whether we really deserve it or not.
Historically, many rock bands made a huge leap forward on the fifth album, such as Metallica or Iron Maiden. We at Prequelle have not done anything like this yet, but no one is surprised that we are playing here on the Spodek stage, that we fit here. And, going to our concert, you are aware that for the price of the ticket you will get everything you expect, I can guarantee it. Once you get out of the club into the hall, you have to give the audience something more, you can't go on looking and play like a small band that is lucky and that can't cope on the big stage. Then you have to do more and not stand out from bands that have been practicing it for years.
Just like Behemoth, who booked the largest halls for the recent tour in Poland.
You still have to. Believe that you can, that you can. For years, there has been an opinion that there is no one to replace old rock scene stunts who are slowly retiring. Because it doesn't work that suddenly the little ones become big. Or, on the other hand, that those who have been on stage for thirty years deserve the best place on the festival poster just because they have a long experience. And it's not the years of playing that are a measure of whether you are good or not. I remember the outrage over Avenged Sevenfold who were supposed to play Download after well-deserved bands that have been operating for decades. But so what if they play better concerts? This is how it should look like.
Tell me, do you feel relieved that after so many years you can take off the mask and officially perform during, even our conversation, under your real name?
To be honest, I feel completely detached from my stage character, and today even more than before. Maybe I'm not an abstainer, but I won't go to the club after the concert to pour a whole bottle of something stronger, and that probably would be expected from what I do on stage. Sometimes I also feel like I'm stuck in a limbo, because people expect a set of specific behaviors from me, observed at the concert, which sometimes is a bit tiring. That is why I insist that when material about me or the band appears, that it should be accompanied by photos of the band or Cardinal or Papa, not mine.

Exactly. I don't want myself on posters, just like George Lucas does not appear on Star Wars advertising materials. I created a world, but I'm not part of it.
You've roughly thought of the band's mythology around a decade ago, but I guess the various circumstances and realities of the music industry require you to constantly change.
I couldn't think of all this ten years ago. I cut and developed individual ideas on a regular basis. Today, our mythology is also created by fans. Ghost is not just mine anymore. Maybe I came up with this and supervises the whole undertaking, but I don't expect that everyone involved, especially the audience, will follow me blindly. That is why what I do requires due attention from me.

Sam’s pacing through Mercedes’s childhood home in Ohio, phone in selfie mode, already rambling at a hundred miles a minute that Blaine’s sure he cut off a few words.
“—cedes just showed me Kurt’s snapchat story and I AM LOSING IT! Did something happen between you two? Oh my god, something totally happened, didn’t it!? BLAINE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED MERCEDES WON’T TELL ME AND I ALREADY FINISHED EVERY BINGABLE SHOW ON NETFLI—”
As expected, it was a lot. But still not enough to burst his happy little bubble. He doesn’t think anything could, at this point.
Through his smiles, he snaps back a picture of himself shrugging, trying to look as clueless as possible, and adds the caption: I have no idea what you’re talking about.
It’s not even a full moment before he gets another video back.
“BLAINE ANDERSON I AM BEGGING YOU—”
Blaine locks his phone shut, mostly because he knows it’ll drive Sam crazy. He can respond later. Right now, there are more important matters at hand.

Kurt actually growls as he types out a reply. How did he put up with this for nearly three years?
New Message: To: Adam I’m not.
Kurt. We both know how this ends.
Not this time. I meant it. We’re done.
Okay, whatever you say I’ll check in with you later When you change your mind
Kurt doesn’t even warrant that with a response, he’s too seething mad to even formulate one with enough bite to put Adam in his place.
But then the door opens, Blaine’s beaming at him, and Adam is completely irrelevant.
“I was just thinking,” Blaine muses aloud, slipping under the covers and snuggling up next to him in a way that Kurt knows will be way too easy for him to get used to. “Do you remember our Junior year when we had to partner up during Stagefighting for that Musical Choregraphy project?”
Kurt explodes into laughter. “Uh, yeah, that was pretty ridiculous. I remember hearing from Matthew that you said I dance like a pigeon that’d been chewed up and spit out by a cat.”
“What!?” Blaine exclaims, shocked. “I swear I never said that. Though, I do remember going on a tangent about how I didn’t know how I was supposed to concentrate when you insisted on wearing those pants with that tight fitted shirt and…”
He trails off, and Kurt can feel color rising to his cheeks. “Oh, that explains it, actually.”
“Explains what?”
“Matthew. He had a huge crush on you.”
Blaine’s eyes double in size. “He what!?”
Kurt lets out a chuckle. “You seriously didn’t know?”
“No! Nobody told me!”
“That’s not how crushes work, Blaine,” Kurt says through a stream of giggles.
“Okay, why does it make more sense for me to just take a wild guess about how people feel about me instead of them telling me, or acting on it? Like, if you hadn’t have kissed me earlier, I would have never known how you felt and kissed you back.”
Kurt opens his mouth to argue that logic, but… he seriously cannot get over how oblivious Blaine is. “So you’re saying that if I hadn't accidentally kissed you then you really wouldn’t have known how I feel?”
“Yeah. And I would most definitely not have acted on my crush.”
“Aw,” Kurt teases. “You used to have a crush on me. That’s embarrassing.”
“And you watch too much Parks and Rec.”
“I’m gonna kiss you again, now,” he announces.
Blaine just grins, eyes crinkling at the sides. “I think that’s a great idea.”
There wasn’t much of a choice because of the shelter in place, but based on the bright spark forming in his chest when their skin meets, Kurt could definitely get used to this living situation.

Blaine finally pulls away reluctantly. If he could stay attached to Kurt forever, stay connected to him, he would. He roams his eyes over Kurt’s face, like he could memorize it if he really, really tried, and notices a scar just above his eyebrow. It would be invisible to anyone else, anyone who wasn’t trying to intentionally map out the image of Kurt.
The scar doesn’t bother Blaine, but the idea that someone ever hurt Kurt bad enough to leave physical evidence that refuses to leave tugs achingly at his heart. Instinctively, he takes his hand from where it rests on the side of Kurt’s face, and gently traces over the scar with the pad of his index finger soothingly, as if it hasn’t been healed for years.
“Sophomore year… two years ago,” Kurt’s murmuring refocuses his attention.
That was a hazy time for Blaine, but he does have a vague memory of hearing from a friend of a friend that Kurt spent some time in the hospital, and he definitely remembers his rival-slash-partner being missing from their stage acting class for a while.
“What happened?” He asks.
Kurt is so calm, so steady when he answers. It leaves him in awe. “It was when all those gay bashings were happening…” he pauses, and Blaine immediately feels sick to his stomach because he knows where this is heading. “I was on my way home from school and saw these guys attacking some teenager, and… I had to help. I ran over and started shoving them, I guess. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but the kid got away. I didn’t. The last thing I remember after that was what I think might’ve been a brick hitting my head.”
“Jesus,” Blaine breathes. His initial reaction is to say I’m sorry, but something tells him that Kurt isn’t sorry about it at all. Instead, he says, “I had no idea. That–that was really brave of you.”
Kurt snorts out a laugh. “I’m glad you think so. I spent most of my hospital stay being berated by my dad about how irresponsible it was.”
“No,” Blaine shakes his head. “If anything it was over-responsible.”
“I’m not convinced that’s a word.”
“Me neither,” Blaine says breathlessly, amber gaze fixed on the boy lying across from him.
He really just can’t help but pull them together again.
Blaine thinks Kurt is opening his mouth to deepen the kiss and, well, he’s certainly not going to complain. Until Kurt sucks in a deep breath and turns his head, chuckling through his yawn.
“Sorry, I really thought I could hold that yawn in.”
Blaine lets out a laugh of his own and glances over at the analog clock on the nightstand. “It’s only midnight, you grandpa,” he teases.
“Hey! Doing nothing all day is seriously draining.”
“I wouldn’t call what we did nothing,” Blaine says cheekily, causing Kurt to flush.
“I’m going to shower before I head to bed,” Kurt responds, sitting up and lifting his arms up over his head and exposing an inch or so of his midriff.
Blaine is trying so hard not to stare. Nevertheless, he can’t help it as he watches Kurt saunter off to the restroom.
He tosses his head back onto the pillow with a satisfied grin on his face. Global crisis it may be, but if he got Kurt Hummel out of it… he could complain about worse things.
A bright ding from his right interrupts his thoughts. Blaine turns his head and sees the screen of Kurt’s phone light up, resting there on the nightstand.
He’s not snooping. He’s really not. It’s just sort of instinct to look in the direction of the sounds.
Then, he sees the succession of messages that make his stomach churn.
New Message: From: Adam Hurry and finish up with the rebound already I miss you Text me when you’re on your way
He stares at the screen for a few seconds before it fades back to black, feeling absolutely sick to his stomach. Of course Kurt was going to run back to his ex the first chance he got. It’s exactly what he did three years ago and Blaine was just kidding himself. This was all too good to be true.
Turns out it wasn’t.
Before he knows it, he’s grabbing his duffel bag and dialing Quinn’s number.
He’s always welcomed there and New Haven isn’t all that far, after all.

Stray Kids Talk Songwriting, Career Goals and Their First U.S. Tour
“Authenticity” is a keyword thrown around a lot more often in K-pop these days. With crossover potential in the foreground, there’s more at stake when it comes to shaking the dismissive notion that it’s “manufactured.” Companies are investing more in idols — not just as performers, but as visionaries of their artistic direction. It just so happens Stray Kids have emerged as a rookie boy band challenging these preconceived notions.
This nine-member group hails from one of Korea’s “Big 3” music agencies, JYP Entertainment. They’ve only been around for a year, and they’ve already hit huge career milestones. After snagging several Rookie of the Year trophies at Korean award shows, they just won their first music show at M Countdown on April 4.
“When we won first place for the first time, we were so happy and thankful towards our Stay,” main rapper Han told Forbes, referring to the group’s fandom. “We thought to ourselves that we would need to work even harder now to show an even better side to our Stay. One memory we have from that day is when our win was first announced, Seungmin and I cried a lot.”
Part of what sets Stray Kids apart is their heightened emphasis on self-composition. While it’s increasingly common for idols to pen their own songs, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a Stray Kids track that doesn’t feature a member in the liner notes. They even have their own in-house songwriting team: 3RACHA, featuring members Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han.
“We’re given a lot of freedom,” said Bang Chan, the Aussie leader of the group. “It’s mostly what we want to speak. It is our lyrics and our melodies. So we would write all our songs. We finish a song, and we would show it to our big boss, JYP. And he would give feedback on it. And yeah, it’s beautiful teamwork.”
The fate of a K-pop group’s lineup is often pre-determined by top-down management, but Stray Kids are presented as having an unprecedented level of autonomy. Auteurship is in the details, from Bang Chan hand-picking the members to his handwriting forming the group’s logo.Their discography — which has rapidly grown since their March 2018 debut — is representative of K-pop’s genre agnosticism. One minute, they’ll throw a bit of rap-rock your way. Next, they’ll hit hard with a well-timed EDM drop. They excel at blood-pumping bangers like latest single “MIROH,” but they can get more pensive on songs like “Grow Up.” While they have built a sound around a razor-edged intensity, they still make room for playful and light-hearted fare like “Get Cool.”Despite the diversity of their catalogue, there’s always a few song components they have to keep in mind when constructing a track. “BPM is very important especially because we are the ones who are performing on stage,” said Bang Chan. “Another important factor is the song structure. In my opinion, the song structure represents the flow of the whole song, so depending on the mood of the song, the song structure is quite important.”He’s not kidding. Take their third single, “My Pace.” The flow is disjointed by plenty of vocal breaks, speeding up just as soon as it slows down again. It’s a delicate balancing act, the way they anchor the hooks while keeping the listener on their toes by switching up the rhythm. But this temporal shapeshifting has a larger purpose. It feels conceptually poignant on this track, where the lyrics explore the theme of going through life at your own speed.
“Honestly, having the opportunity to even write songs for the team is a great big honor,” the 21-year-old leader said. “But because we still have a long way to go, we hope to become songwriters who can inspire others and give energy and hope to people in need.”
Stray Kids are already off to an impressive start, wrapping up the three-EP I Am series in less than a year. The group threaded together a whole narrative cycle across the albums I Am Not, I Am Who, and I Am You. Their world-building began in the dystopian “District 9,” where they escaped authoritarian uniformity to forge their own paths.
I Am is fundamentally a bildungsroman brought to life by a group in their teens and early 20s, taking the listener on a journey to self-discovery. “The message of I Am Not is realizing that I don’t feel like myself,” Bang Chan previously explained during 3RACHA’s “pre-talk” with JYP. “I Am Who throws a question, ‘if I am not myself, who am I?’ As for I Am You, it sounds like we made a conclusion. But in fact, we have yet to find out about our identity.”
That lack of resolution makes sense because it reflects the group’s own transitional state of entering into both adulthood and celebrity status.
“While I was going through school, I would think, ‘What’s my dream? Do I really have to do this? My parents expect me to do this but is this what I want?’” Bang Chan said. “Honestly, I haven’t found the answer yet. I still don’t know who I am. But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who thinks like this, right? I just really want to reach out to people who are having the same problem like me — well, not problem. It’s not a problem, but I guess [people] who are going through the same thing. This is the reason we wanted to express that in the I Am series.”
Naturally, these themes also bleed into their follow-up album series, which kicked off with March’s Clé 1: MIROH. In particular, “19” — with lyrics solely written by 18-year-old Han — paints vignettes that dig deeper into his hesitations about entering adulthood.
But the connections between the I Am and Clé series go beyond shared thematic content. “In the music video for ‘I Am You,’ we were looking down at a maze-like city from the rooftop [in District 9],” Changbin said. “This city’s name is MIROH, and MIROH is our new world.”
Stray Kids are practically building their own cinematic universe, and their latest album teaser for Clé 2: Yellow Wood — which will be released on June 19 — could be mistaken for a movie trailer. Note that the setting is in an elevator, which brings to mind their pre-debut single, “Hellevator.” Visual callbacks to their previous work are part of the fabric of their ongoing narrative.
“It is a bit challenging,” said Bang Chan. “But when we write our songs, we do think about what we’ve written before and how we need to continue off of that and what we need to think about writing on next. It’s okay, it’s not that difficult. But we do need to think about [it].”
When they’re not dreaming up dystopian cities, they’re taking their tagline “Stray Kids everywhere, all around the world” seriously. Just last month, they headed out on their first U.S. tour, making sold-out stops in Newark, Houston, and Los Angeles. Come July, they’ll take their Unveil tour to Europe. “Through these stages and performances, we want to be able to show later on more people in more cities what we’re made of,” main dancer Hyunjin said.
On May 17, they played a show at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium that was simultaneously characterized by the sensory onslaught of their adrenaline-inducing performances and the vulnerable affability of their frequent ments, or speaking segments. Their raucous spin on K-pop maximalism literally left the 3,000-seat venue shook, as Stays rattled the balcony in their excitement.
But the nonet also made use of the relatively intimate space, placing more emphasis on fan engagement than your average concert. By the time the evening rolled around to their goodbye talk, the members had some heartfelt words for Stay. “I always read our Stays’ letters, and you guys are always afraid of the future,” Han said on stage. “I just want to tell you [to] believe in yourself and just don’t look back. We are on your side.” It was a moment that captured Stray Kids’ penchant for speaking about issues faced by young people.
“We’re always showing and sharing our own music,” the youngest member I.N said over the phone. “We want to be known as a group where we can give good emotions and influences to people around us.”

2010s Art: Music, Games, and TV
So I love all forms of art. It may not seem like it since I tend to stick mainly to movies, with the odd cartoon or video game thrown in, but that’s really because movies are more my thing due to not being massive time investments. Like, don’t get me wrong, I gamed, I watched TV, I listened to music, but it was a lot more casual than my deep dive into becoming a major cinephile.
With games and TV, it was mostly issues of money and time respectively. I have a few consoles, mostly Nintendo and Sony ones, and my wife helped me experience Xbox games, but I just don’t have the money needed to experience every good game that comes out. With TV, the time investment is the biggest roadblock, especially when all the best shows have hour-long episodes these days. With movies, I just have to spend 90 minutes to two hours on average; for TV, it’s countless hours I could be watching movies. As for music… well, I listened to a lot, I just don’t feel totally qualified to properly rank and list songs and albums.
So instead of the big decade-spanning list for movies that I’m doing, I’m going to go over some things I enjoyed from the past decade and maybe a few things I didn’t in music, TV, and video games. Here’s a little guide so you know what stuff is something I consider one of my absolute favorites in any given medium - if it’s from this decade, it will be in bold, and if it’s from a previous decade but I experienced it this decade, it will be underlined.
Television
I figured I’d get this out of the way first since it’s the medium I have the least experience with. Let me put it this way: I have seen only one season of Game of Thrones, the first one (and by all accounts I dodged a bullet by dropping that show). I also had the misfortune of jumping in to The Walking Dead right as it was gearing up for its abysmal second season, which turned me off that and led to me only watching an episode here or there.
I had better luck watching live action shows on streaming. I managed to get through almost all of Pretty Little Liars on Netflix, which was a chore in and of itself; it’s a good show, but boy could it ever get arbitrary and frustrating. Speaking of Netflix, I think it goes without saying that Stranger Things is their best effort; from the likable cast of kids to the awesome soundtrack, even though it never really surpasses season one the show always has something cool going on in one of its plots. My other favorite from Netflix would probably be their take on A Series if Unfortunate Events, which is how you do adaptation expansion right; everything they add feels like it’s in service of fleshing out Lemony Snicket’s dismal world, as well as giving Patrick Warburton an incredible dramatic role as the Lemony narrator himself.
Amazon managed to score two hits in my book. The first is the unbelievably fun and charming Good Omens, a miniseries that somehow got me to love David Tennant and Michael Sheen more than I already did. The second was the gory joyride that is The Boys which while not the smartest or most original superhero satire is definitely the most fun.
While I didn’t watch the whole show and would not consider it one of my favorites, I do want to give props to Hannibal for introducing me to Mads Mikkelsen. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the only person aside from Hopkins worthy of playing everyone’s favorite cannibal. Another show I DO consider a favorite despite slacking on keeping up with it is Ash vs. Evil Dead; I only needed to see a single season of Bruce back with the boomstick to know this show was a masterpiece.
On the animated side I have much more to talk about. Not since the 90s have we been spoiled with so many genuinely great and varied cartoons. We got Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe… really, Cartoon Network raised the bar this decade and made up for an awful 2000s. They even finally gave Samurai Jack a conclusion, which despite the mixed results, was still a real exciting phenomenon to experience.
Of course, my favorite CN show came from Adult Swim. I am of course referring to Rick & Morty, a fun sci-fi adventure comedy that attracted the most obnoxious fanbase possible in record time. While certainly not a show you need a high IQ to understand and having an atrocious third season, it still manages to be funny and thought provoking in equal amounts. Seriously though. Fuck season 3.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is another great show that I sadly fell off the wagon of around the fifth or sixth season. It never got bad of course but it never really engaged me like the older episodes, though what I’ve heard of the last season makes me wish I’d kept up with it. It was a great show with a lot of heart and character, and I’m not sure we’ll ever see a show like it again.
Netflix did not slack in the animation department; I didn’t catch their most famous show (it’s the one about a certain Horseman) but I did catch their fantastic take on Castlevania, which as a huge fan of the series was a real treat. Where the fuck is Grant though?
My two favorite shows of the decade, however, are what I see as the pinnacle of East and West: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Gravity Falls.
JJBA is a series I had vague passing knowledge of, only knowing its existence due to seeing Stone Ocean referenced on the Wikipedia page for air rods when I was younger and, of course, the memes that spawned from Heritage for the Future, which were inescapable back in the day. As soon as I got into the series, it became one of my biggest inspirations, teaching me you can be deep, complex, and filled with great character interactions while also being so batshit insane that every new and absurd power is incredibly easy to buy (looking forward to the rainbows that turn people into snails, animators). They managed to get through the first four parts and start up the fifth over the decade; so far my favorite part is four, mainly due to the magnificent bastard that is Yoshikage Kira (played time perfection by D.C. Douglas) and in spite of serial creep Vic Mangina playing the otherwise lovable asshole Rohan Kishibe.
Gravity Falls on the other hand is just a fun and engaging mystery show that manages to excel at being episodic and story-driven all at once. There’s only one or two “bad” episodes across two seasons, and it lasted just as long as it needed to, wrapping things up with a satisfactory ending that still gave fans a few mysteries to chew on. It also gave us Grunkle Stan, perhaps the greatest character in all of animation, the pinnacle of “jerk with a heart of gold” characters who is hilarious, badass, and complex all at once. This is my favorite western animated show…
...but then the last year of the decade threw a curveball and, if I’m being honest, is on par with Gravity Falls: Green Eggs and Ham. Netflix really wanted us to know 2D animation is back in 2019; between this show and Klaus, the future is looking bright for the medium. It’s a fun, funny roadtrip comedy that knows when to be emotional and when to be funny, and it’s all filtered through the wubbulous world of Dr. Seuss. It’s just a wonderfully delightful show.
And on the subject of JoJo, I had a kind of love-hate relationship with anime this decade. The attitudes of anime fans turned me off from anime for a long while. Sure, I checked out stuff like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online, but neither series really clicked with me. The main anime I loved this decade were ones that started in the 2000s and ended in the 2010s, like Dragon Ball Z Kai and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I suppose I did enjoy My Hero Academia, which is a really fun show with an awesome and varied cast and great voice acting. Love Froppy, best girl for sure.
One of the most unfortunate things about this decade was how many great shows got screwed over by their networks. Sym-Bionic Titan, Thundercats, and The Legend of Korra were all great shows in their own right but were treated like shit by their respective networks. It really makes me upset that stuff like that not only happened, but continues to happen to this day.
But let’s not end on a bad note; let’s talk about the astounding returns old shows got. Invader Zim got a movie as did Hey Arnold, with the latter in particular finally wrapping up the dangling plot threads, but those are actual TV movies so they don’t really fit here; what DOES fit is Static Cling, the triumphant return of Rocko’s Modern Life. A forty minute special, it follows Rocko and his friends as they navigate the modern age, trying to bring back Rocko’s favorite cartoon. Rachel Bighead’s arc in this in particular is pretty groundbreaking and awesome.
Also awesome was the first few episodes of Samurai Jack’s return, though it did end up petering out halfway through the season and ended on an anticlimactic note. Still, Tom Kenny’s Scaramouche, the sheer amount of continuity, and the awesome final curbstomp battle against Aku are worth giving this a watch. And if nothing else, stuff like this gives me hope for future revivals. What will we see next? Gargoyles comeback? Batman Beyond continuation? KENNY AND THE CHIMP REVIVAL?! Chimpers rise up!
Music
Much like everyone, I listened to a lot of music this decade. There was a lot of shit, and I definitely used to be one of those “wow no one makes good music anymore” morons, but I grew out of that and learned to look in the right places.
Let’s start with the albums I loved the most. Continuing her meteoric rise from the 2000s, Lady Gaga drooped her magnum opus, Born This Way, an album that successfully showcases her skills as she takes on numerous pop styles. No two songs sound the same, and with a couple of exceptions every song slaps. While we’re on the subject of pop stars, Gaga’s contemporary and lesser Katy Perry managed to hit a home run with the fun bit of pop fluff that was Teenage Dream.
Weird Al was sorely missed for most of the decade, but what albums he did drop featured some of his best work. While Alpocalypse doesn’t hold up quite so well, it’s still solid, but even then it is blown out of the water by Mandatory Fun, an album that just refuses to stop being funny from start to finish. And that’s not the only funny albums this decade; aside from artists I’ll get more into later, George Miller AKA Filthy Frank released Pink Season as one of his last great acts as his character of Pink Guy. The album is as raunchy and filthy as you’d expect. And then for unintentional comedy, Corey Feldman dropped Angelic 2 The Core, an album so musically inept that it ends up becoming endearing; it’s The Room of music.
As I gamed a lot this decade I got to experience a lot of great video game soundtracks, but the two I found to be the absolute best were Undertale and Metal Gear Rising’s. I couldn’t tell you which soundtrack is better, and I’ve actually made a playlist on my iPod containing my favorite tracks from both games. Pokemon had solid soundtracks all decade, but they definitely were better in single tracks such as Ultra Necrozma’s theme from USUM and Zinnia’s theme from ORAS.
And speaking of individual songs, there were a lot I really loved. The disco revival in the easel ide half of the decade lead to gems like “Get Lucky,” “Uptown Funk,” and… uh, “Blurred Lines.” The controversy to that one might be overblown, but it sure isn’t anything I really want to revisit.
Corey Feldman may be the king of unintentional comedy, but this decade was seriously ripe with so bad it’s good music. The crown jewel is without a doubt the giddy, goofy “Friday,” but I think the equally stupid but also endlessly more relatable Ark Music production “Chinese Food” is worth some ironic enjoyment as well.
Meme songs in general were pretty enjoyable, though it came at a price. Remember when everyone tried to be funny by ripping off “Gangnam Style?” Remember when people took that Ylvis song at face value? Irony and satire were lost on the masses. I think the best mene song of the decade, though, is “Crab Rave,” a bouncy instrumental dance track with a fun music video and an absurd yet hilarious meme tacked to it. And then we have “The Internet is for Music,” a gargantuan 30 minute mashup featuring every YTMND, 4chan, Newgrounds, and YouTube meme you could think of (at the time of its release anyway),
Then we get into artists. Comedy music was great this decade, with Steel Panther and The Lonely Island putting out great work all decade, but by far my favorite funny band is Ninja Sex Party. Dan “Danny Sexbang” Avidan and Brian “Ninja Brian” Wecht are pretty much my favorite entertainers at this point, with them easily being able to go from doing goofy yet epic songs where they fuck or party to doing serious and awesome cover albums where Dan flexes his impressive vocals. A big plus is how all of their albums are easily some of my favorites ever, with not a single bad CD, and that’s not even getting into their side project Starbomb. These guys are a treasure.
Then we have Ghost, a Swedish metal band who play up the Satanic panic for all it’s worth. These guys captured my interest when I heard the beautiful “Cirice” on the radio, and despite that song rocking the fuck out, Imagine my surprise when it ended up being only middle of the road awesome for this band! With killer original songs like “Rats,” “Mary in the Cross,” and “Square Hammer” to a awesome covers like “Missionary Man” and “I’m a Marionette,” it’s almost enough to get a guy to hail Satan. I think they appeal to me mainly because they have a style very in line with the 80s, most evident on tracks like “Rats.”
While I’d hesitate to call him one of my favorite musicians yet (he is really good so far though), one of my favorite people in entertainment is Lil Nas X. From his short but sweet songs that crush genre boundaries to his hilarious Twitter feed, this guy is going places and I can’t wait to see what those places are.
And finally, the guy I think may be one of the greatest creative geniuses alive and who has nearly singlehandedly shaped Internet culture with everything he does… Neil Cicierega. While it’s not like I only discovered him in the 2010s - the guy has been an omnipresent force in my life since Potter Pupper Pals debuted - he definitely became the guy I would unflinchingly call the greatest artist of our time over that period. Whether he’s releasing the songs under his own name or as Lemon Demon, you can always be sure that the songs are going to burrow into your brain. His Lemon Demon album Spirit Phone, which features songs about urban legends and the horrors of capitalism, is easily my pick for album of the decade. And then under his own name he released three mashup mixtapes: Mouth Sounds, Mouth Silence, and Mouth Moods. All three are stellar albums, but only Mouth Moods has “Wow Wow,” the bouncing track about homoerotic bee-loving Will Smith and outtakes so good they deserve to be on the next album.
Video Games
Having a PC this decade was great because it let me experience a lot of games I probably wouldn’t have otherwise, like Half-Life, BioShock, Earthnound, Mother 3, and Final Fantasy VI and VII. All of these and more are among my favorite games of all time now, but we’re here to talk about the stuff from this decade I consider great.
It’s hard to talk about this decade in gaming without mentioning Skyrim. Yes, it has flaws and the main storyline is a bit undercooked, but there’s so much fun to be had dicking about in the wilderness it’s hard to be too mad. And if you have mods, there are endless opportunities to expand the game. The same is true for the other game I have sunk countless hours into, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Not only is there a thriving modding community, but it has been supported and encouraged by the creators and some mods have even made the leap into becoming fully canon! It’s always a blast to revisit and see how far I can break the game with item combos.
Surprisingly, Batman managed to get not one, not two, but THREE awesome licensed games this decade! Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and the unfairly maligned Arkham Origins all kick as much ass as the Dark Knight himself. The former two reunite Mark Hamill and Kevin McConroy as Joker and Batman while the latter features numerous stellar boss battles. The combat in these games is so graceful and fluid, you WILL feel like Batman at some point, be it after flawlessly clobbering two dozen mooks or silently eliminating a room of thugs before they even realize you’re there.
Pokémon had a bit of a rocky decade; it started out strong with the fifth generation, the best games in the series with a great story, region, and sidequests and then just went downhill from there. Not incredibly so, of course - the games were always fun at least - but gens VI through VIII were not the most graceful steps into 3D. Still, every gen managed to produce some of my all-time favorite Pokémon. Gen V had Volcarona, Chandelure, and Meloetta; Gen VI gave us Hoopa, Klefki, the Fairy type in general, and a gorgeous mega evolution for my favorite Pokémon, Absol; Gen VII had the Ultra Beasts and Ultra Necrozma, some of the coolest concepts in the series, as well as Pyukumuku; and Gen VIII gave us Cinderace, Dracovish, Dracozolt, Polteageist, Hatterene, Snom, and Zacian. And those are just samplings mind you, these gens are full of hits.
Bringing back old franchises yielded amazing results. Look no further than the triumphant return of Doom in 2016, which had you ripping and tearing through the forces of Hell with guns, chainsaws, and your bear fucking hands. This game is HARDCORE. Less bloody and gory but no less awesome was the return of not just Crash Bandicoot, but Spyro as well in remakes that are easily the definitive ways to experience the games. And don’t even get me started on the remastered DuckTales!
Platinum games did not fuck around this decade, delivering Bayonetta 2 and Metal Gear Rising. The former is a balls-to-the-wall sequel to the amazing original Bayonetta that, while lacking in bosses quite as impressive as the first game’s, is more polished and has a fun story and a better haircut for Bayonetta; the latter is an action game so insane it makes the rest of the Metal Gear franchise look tame in comparison. The latter in particular is in my top ten games ever, with every boss battle feeling epic, all the music kicking ass, and Raiden truly coming into his own as a badass.
Speaking of Metal Gear, the divisive The Phantom Pain easily earns its place here. While much fuss has been made about the game being “unfinished,” it still has a complete and satisfying ending even if it doesn’t totally wrap up the dangling plot threads the young Liquid Snake leaves behind. The overarching themes as well as Venom and his relationship with characters like Kaz, Paz, and ESPECIALLY Quiet make this game, with his and Quiet’s being particularly beautiful and tragic. The Paz quest, Quiet’s exit, and the mission where Snake has to put down his men after they get infested with parasites are all some of the most heartbreaking moments in the franchise. But it’s not all tears; there’s plenty of fun to be had harassing Russians in Afghanistan while blaring 80s synth pop from your Walkman. Oh yeah, and fuck Huey.
The Ace Attorney series also thrived, with both Spirit of Justice and Dual Destinies transitioning the series into 3D a lot more graceful than some other franchises while still maintaining the with and charm the series is known for. And if that wasn’t enough for my point-and-cluck adventure needs, Telltale had me covered with The Wolf Among Us and the first season of The Walking Dead. The stories and characters of those games are so good, it’s enough to make you sad they never got a timely sequel or sequels that weren’t shit respectively.
This decade is when I really got into fighting game, though I’m not particularly good. I supported Skullgirls (and am even in the credits!), and got into Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle (and I also got into its spiritual predecessor, Heritage for the Future). But by and large my favorite fighting game of the decade and the one I’m actually pretty good at is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the most ridiculously ambitious crossover in video game history. The fact that the game is STILL getting more characters added is a testament of how insanely great the game is because instead of being mad that there’s so much DLC, people are going rabid waiting for news of more. It’s such an awesome, complete game out the door that the DLC feels earned rather than half a game being held hostage. Other devs, take note!
A lot of franchises put their best foot forward for sequels. God of War III was an awesomely bloody finale to the original journey of Kratos, with more epic bosses than ever; now he’s off fighting Norse gods, and I hear that game is even better! Portal 2 is just an absolute blast, and easily surpasses the first game on the merit of having Cave Johnson alone; the fact we get Wheatley and the malfunctioning personality cores honestly feels like overkill. Then we have BioShock… 2. While it’s certainly not as good as the first game, I think it was a lot of fun, and it got way too much flak.
I think it definitely aged better than Infinite which, while still a good game in its own right (it’s hard to hate a game with a character as endearing as Elizabeth), definitely was not warranting the levels of acclaim it got with such a muddled narrative. “Overrated” and “overhyped” are not words I keep in my vocabulary and I certainly would not describe Infinite as such, but I do feel like people got swept up in the gorgeous visuals and the story bits and characters that are effective and so weren’t nearly as critical of its flaws. It’s still a good, fun game with an interesting world, but it pales in comparison to the other two BioShocks. I feel like The Last of Us is in a similar boat. That being said, I couldn’t tell you why; it has a great story, good characters, plenty of replayability, and fascinating enemy design. But despite all that, I appreciate this game more than love it. It’s the Citizen Kane of video game sin that regard at least.
I’d be remiss to not mention the big indie successes of the decade. Shovel Knight is easily one is the greatest platform era ever made, taking everything great about the platformers on the NES and SNES, removing the bullshit, and delivering numerous bonus campaigns with unique playstyles. Then there was Abobo’s Big Adventure, a marvelous mashup of all sorts of games starring the beloved Double Dragon mook as he goes on a bloody quest to save his son. It’s a blast and there is tons of variety but some sections are definitely as hair-pullingly difficult as the games that inspired them. And then there is Doki Doki Literature Club, the free visual novel that brutally subverts your expectations. Sadly, I do feel the game loses some impact on subsequent playthroughs, but it’s still a great, effective story that skillfully utilizes meta elements.
Still, the greatest indie success of them all is Toby Fox’s masterpiece, Undertale. Charming, funny, emotional, and populated by a cast of some of the most fun and lovable characters ever conceived, this game was an instant smash and is still talked about to this day. Sure, things like Sans have been memed to death, but it’s hard to not just love and cherish the beautiful world Toby Fox managed to create. This game may not be the greatest game of all time, but for what it is I wouldn’t hesitate to name it the game of the decade.
There was a lot of great art in the 2010s, and while I couldn’t get around to all of it, I’m so happy with what I got to experience. Here’s hoping that the 2020s can be just as amazing!

Chen, who blossomed after 7 years
Member of EXO, EXO-CBX, lyricist, and strong (t/n: as in doing well on music charts) OST singer. Chen has several great titles, but he never half-heartedly does anything. Chen, who gained a syndrome-like (t/n: unprecedented) popularity as soon as he debuted due to his intense performance that made girls’ hearts flutter, matured as a solo artist capable of consoling the public’s hearts with only his relaxing ballads after constant quenching (t/n: metaphor for hard work). We met Chen, who bloomed his own gorgeous flower with his first album ‘April, and a flower’ after 7 years since debut. April of (this) spring was a busy month for you. I had an EXO-CBX special edition concert left to do, so as soon as I was finished with my first solo album promotions, I left for Japan and prepared for the concert. This April, I was very productive, from solo activities to subunit performances. After coming back to Korea, I had a full day of rest, had dinner with all the members, and had a fun time. It took 7 years for your solo debut. What kind of mentality did you have when first preparing for the album? I was able to release my solo album way sooner than I had expected. Because I knew my weaknesses better than anyone else, I wanted to work on those weaknesses and show a more matured, perfect appearance. However, at some point, I realized that there’s (just) no end to improving my flaws. I thought that I shouldn’t put it off any longer and decided to seriously prepare for it and experience it first-hand. I told the company thinking that if I felt like I was lacking something, I’d just learn, practice, and improve in that area as I go. On the outside, you don’t seem to have any flaws. The first thing I realized I was lacking was the ability to sing a full song that’s almost 4 minutes long by myself. When in a group, you only get to sing a part of a song, but because I was alone, I struggled to just keep the flow going. It was hard for me to decide (the answer to) “What kind of music do I want to do?”. I’ve been asking myself that question for a long time since there is so much breadth to music. I think it took me a while to figure out what I wanted among (those wide range of options). It’s also unique that your album only consists of ballad songs. We expected there to be fast-paced tracks since you are also good with dance songs, as an EXO member. It was an answer to the question ‘What kind of music do I want to do?’. What I really want to do with music, rather than just singing the song that’s given to me, is convey the message and the emotions through that song. And I thought that ballad would be a good genre to do so. It was my intention to put only ballad tracks on the album, but there’s something that wasn’t done on purpose. I didn’t know that all the songs would be about breakups. I collected the songs while thinking that I wanted to convey the feeling of consolation, and it just happened. I think I’ll look for more love songs to put on my next album (laughs). Since you’ve had great accomplishments as an EXO member, when you announced your solo debut, people were very interested and had high expectations. Did you feel any pressure or responsibility from that? Of course. Since I was going to be the first EXO member to release a solo album in Korea, I felt pressured and a sense of responsibility. I thought hard about how to create an album that would meet everyone’s expectations. While I was preparing for the album, I spent so much time thinking about it, and my attitude slowly changed. Even though I feel thankful that people have high expectations about me, rather than trying to change to meet those expectations, I thought that it would be better to just show my true self. I wanted to show a fresh and true image, different from the old one I’ve built up thus far. You also wrote the lyrics for the track ‘Flower’. It feels like you are a very emotionally sensitive person. The key word for this album was comfort, and I think there are different types of comfort. For example, comforting someone who just went through a breakup or comforting a friend. I wanted to bring those different types of comfort into one. I was wondering what would be their common ground and came to a conclusion—time. With time, any pain or thought bugging you shall fade. I wrote about the seasons as a metaphor for time. I think it’s impossible to always be happy and to only experience good things in life. I wanted to say let’s have faith because even though at some point, the flowers will fall off and everything will pass, whenever a new season comes, you’ll find new hope and the flowers will start to bloom one by one. I think the making of an album is similar to a flower blooming. Do you think your flower bloomed beautifully? I think the flower turned out to be more beautiful than I had imagined. Whenever I am introducing my album, I get all the spotlight from saying that I participated in writing lyrics, but all I did was just write lyrics and sing. This album release was possible because everyone, company employees, the director, and staff, worked together. When preparing for this album, I was able to experience first-hand some of the things I didn’t really know about. So I think this album came out to be more meaningful and cool. How was working with Paul Kim, the composer of ‘Sorry not sorry’? I am a huge fan of Paul Kim. I made a request through the company, and he gladly agreed to help. I was worried at first about whether I would be able to sing his song well since he’s famous for writing emotional songs. So I practiced even harder, and ultimately Paul Kim also really liked the result. It was such a relief. I was able to form a nice relationship (with him) from working on this song (together). I would like to work with him on another good song next time. You ranked first on the Korean music charts and on the iTunes charts in 33 different countries with your first solo album. I was so surprised because I didn’t expect that at all. I felt really pressured in the early stages of album preparation, but after I changed my mindset and put down the burden to focus only on showing my true image, I didn’t feel pressured to do well on the charts or have high expectations. I think I’m starting to feel pressured now that I have received such good results. I’m happy to have that burden and to have these worries. I’ve started to worry about (the question) “How else can I show my true self?”. After this album, you received the title of ‘Trust and Listen to Chen’. Is there any reaction (t/n: literally, evaluation) that left an impression? I’m embarrassed, and it feels strange to be called by any nickname. I don’t search up reviews or comments either. I don’t want to become arrogant or change, so I don’t go looking for reactions online. I want to improve by just silently trying my best to to do things that I want to do. I think your charming points are your clean vocals, strong high notes, and stable voice while singing live. In your opinion, what are the strengths your voice has? While preparing for this album, “What exactly are my strengths?”, “Is it that I have a higher vocal range than others?”—I thought about (these questions). I honestly have never felt satisfied with my voice. Even when I try my best, when I listen back to the recordings, a lot of them still make me I think, “Why did I sing like that?” I don’t have anything I can call my strengths at this moment. However, I do have a goal for the future: I want to be someone who can convey sincere emotions without being too decorative (t/n: being excessive/overdoing it). What motivates you to continuously show colorful charms of yourself, as a member of EXO, EXO-CBX, and soloist Chen? I think having alone time is important. Like my nickname ‘homebody’, I recharge by taking some time for myself. I am in a position where I need to give people energy, and since I’m always meeting with people in my everyday life, I rest like a phone recharging in a quiet, relaxed environment. When I make a mistake on stage and feel stressed, or even when something bad happens, I try to ease my mind on my own and I’m able to overcome it. Only then can I work on my next task without anything holding me back. This year it will have been 7 years since EXO debuted. What does EXO mean to Chen? It really feels like family. When you’re working as a team with different members, some members are going through an enthusiastic phase, and others are going through a phase where they feel like taking a break... For being understanding, considerate, and willing to guide each other despite our differences, I want to say thank you to the members who have been running together (with me) up until now. They’re so dear to me like actual brothers. Leader Suho said, “We are so happy whenever the fans say ‘thank you for being EXO’. I want to be an EXO member in my next life”. Do you feel the same way? If I could be an EXO member in my next life, that would be really great. One of the happiest things I was able to experience as an EXO member is being able to meet so many good people. Our members, managers, staff, and of course, our fans. Being in EXO, I’ve only met good people. It always feels so nice to hear the fans’ message of ‘thank you for singing’. The fact that there are people who like my singing means that you have their approval. More than anything, that’s what really motivates me to keep going.

Outside the Rain - Harry Styles Series (Part 1)
“Love is a word I’ve been trying to find”
The closer you got to the venue, the higher your nerves got. There was a churn in your stomach as the driver pulled into the back parking lot to drop you off at the stage doors. That night you had a performance, something you’ve done practically you’re whole entire life. You’ve been surrounded by the tour life and musicians ever since before you could walk. Performing up on stage in front of an audience was something you lived for.
Nothing in the world made you happier than standing up on stage and singing your music. So, why were you about to blow chunks over this particular one? Well, because it wasn’t any performance. It was an elite and special performance. You were performing at the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with none other than Stevie Nicks.
Or as you like to call her Aunt Stevie.
See, your father plays the drums in Stevie’s band, which means you’ve grown up with her being in your life and plus she’s your Godmother. Being the daughter of musicians, you were constantly on tour with someone. Whenever Stevie was touring with Fleetwood Mac or not touring, your father was touring with other bands.
However, you didn’t really connect with anyone else the way you did with her.
The bond you two shared was indescribable. She helped you through so much, especially in your teenage years. Your first heartbreak, your first experience of puppy love, etc. Hell, she was basically the reason you were where you were in your life.
At the age of three, the first time you can remember a show, is when you decided you wanted to be on stage. In fact, you actually did just that. You were standing at the side of the stage during one of Stevie’s shows. It was a smaller venue because it was more of a pop up show than a full on tour. Your mother was talking to someone else backstage, while you were staring at your Aunt Stevie the entire time.
You didn’t even acknowledge your own father at the drums even though he was at a closer vantage point. At this point, Stevie was talking to the crowd about the next song, and as soon as the opening of the song started playing, you found yourself going out on stage. It was like your feet just sort of took over before the rest of you could react, but then again you were only three.
The song was ‘Edge of Seventeen’ and you started dancing alongside of her and as soon as she noticed you, pulled you closer and the rest was history. Anytime you were at a show with her, you would come out and perform that song with her.
And tonight wouldn’t be any different. Except, it was very different. It wasn’t just a show in front of Stevie Nicks fan, although you were sure everyone in that building would technically be her fan. But it was also in front of a mountain of legends, Rock legends... and well, you were far from a rock legend.
You started a career in the music industry at the age of fifteen with a group of your closest friends back home. You four formed a popular girl band that was super successful. You traveled all over the world, met tons of new people, sold millions of copies of each of your four records.
But then it got to be to much, so you each decided on taking a break back in 2013.
And it was a much needed break.
However, being surrounded by music your whole life, you couldn’t get it out of you. You tried doing other projects like working with brands and designers and doing a few acting jobs, but nothing gave you the same feeling as music.
So, then you decided on adventuring on your own. And since then, you’ve produced two solo records, slightly different from one another. Your debut album was a mix of both pop and rock. While it was perfect for radio play, there was definitely some rock and alternative undertones mixed in. And your second album, that you released last year was a little more folky/country inspired with a little pop mixed in.
Both of your albums went number one and you had very successful tours and you loved having all of the creative input on your music, but you did miss having your girls around. You missed putting on a huge performance, with dance breaks and just having a great ass time.
Which is one reason you all were thinking about getting back together, something not even your families really new yet.
But you couldn’t think about that right now because you had a huge, huge performance, oh and speech, to worry about. Yeah, so not only were you performing, but you were also giving a speech to officially induct Stevie into the Hall of Fame. Writing the speech was easy. Like super easy, it’s the telling it part that you were nervous about.
And it sort of didn’t help that you would be teaming up with someone else as well. When you found out that you would be presenting the award with Harry Styles, you didn’t know how to feel about it. You knew your Aunt was really close to him because she had talked about him quite a bit over the last few years, in fact, she’s actually tried to introduce the two of you countless times since she’s met him, but it never really worked out.
The first time you would meet him would be at rehearsals and you had no idea how long or what he included in his speech, so hopefully you two would have time to compare before the show tonight.
“There you are,” a loud voice came over the speakers from the stage.
You looked up, seeing your godmother, smirking at you.
“I got a little distracted on the way in,” you said taking your guitar out of it’s case.
“Y/N, you’re going to do great. I don’t understand why you’re nervous,” she said walking over to you.
“Yeah, we’ll of course you’d say that because your fucking Stevie Nicks,” you rolled your eyes. “Plus, this your night. A night you’ve earned.”
“And you’re fucking Y/N and this is just as much your night as is it mine,” she said. “Besides this isn’t just my song now, it’s our song. It wouldn’t be right to perform it without you.”
“Well, then what are we standing around talking for,” you joked.

Harry was scrolling through his phone in the car as he was on his way to the venue. He still couldn’t get over the fact that he was not only performing with Stevie Nicks in front of countless rock legends, but that he also had the honor of presenting the award to her. That was an honor in itself.
Harry was always looking forward to performing, but he still got nervous, especially over this one. He still had a lot to prove in regards to him being a rock musician. A lot of people still viewed him as Harry Styles from One Direction, which was fine, but he wanted people to take him and his music seriously.
When he got to the venue, he could hear rehearsals had already started. The familiar sound of Edge of Seventeen coursed through backstage. He smiled as he took his guitar and headed straight to the stage doors. Harry wasn’t set for rehearsals for another half hour, but he couldn’t pass up this chance.
Harry sat his guitar case down as he bobbed his head to he beat and quietly sang along. His gaze went straight to Stevie on stage, but it quickly adverted to the person next to her.
Y/N.
When it came to Y/N, he was quite the fan. He remembered dancing around with his sister Gemma to your music from your girl group and seeing them in concert at one of their shows in Manchester. There were plenty of times you both were present at the same award shows, especially when One Direction were in their prime, but he never got the chance to meet you.
The day Stevie had asked him about performing and being the one to induct her, she also mentioned that she was having you participate as well. He would be lying if he didn’t feel himself blush at the mention of you being there. He knew how close you and Stevie were because she had always talked about you in conversations.
Seeing you up on stage, during the rehearsals, he could see just how close you two were and how amazing you. He couldn't wait to see the actual performance later that night.

Once you were finished, you felt a little more relieved because rehearsals went great. As you were taking your guitar off, you noticed someone walking up onto the stage. You knew exactly who it was, Harry Styles. He and Stevie embraced and you sort of awkwardly stood to the side.
“Y/N, come over here, I think it’s time for you and Harry to finally meet,” she laughed.
You got up from putting your guitar back in its case and walked over. You held out your hand.
“Nice to finally meet you,” you smiled. “She talks about you nonstop.”
“Same here,” Harry smiled taking your hand. “And she talks about you as well.”
“Lovely,” you joked.
“You two sounded great,” he added. “I’m looking forward to seeing it tonight.”
“Thank you,” you smiled. “Well, I uh better let you two get to your rehearsal. But uh, Harry, I don’t know if you have any plans after, but I uh, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to do a run through of our speeches?”
“Yeah, sure. I’ll uh come find you once we’re done?” He asked.
“Sounds good,” you smiled picking up your case and walking off the stage.

Harry made his way to your dressing room backstage once he finished his own rehearsals. He was more than ready to get up on stage for this once in a lifetime opportunity, but he didn’t want to rush it either. He wanted to make sure he savored every minute, so while he couldn’t wait to get on stage, he was glad the show was still a few hours away.
When he got to the door that had the printed sign with your name on it, he knocked softly before he heard a soft “Come in,” from the other side. He turned the doorknob pushing the door open.
“Hey, is uh, this a good time?” He asked.
“Perfect, I was just looking over what I wrote,” you smiled. “How did rehearsals go?”
“It was fun. We sounded good and everything went smoothly. I hope tonight goes the same way,” he said.
“I know exactly how you feel,” you said. “but if it helps, my Aunt Stevie thinks we belong on that stage next to her, even if we feel like we don’t. And honestly, I’m trying to tell myself that’s the only approval I need.”
He laughed, “I’m telling myself that very thing. It doesn’t help that we’re both the youngest people here it seems like.”
“True,” you laughed. “But luckily tonight’s not about us... so that helps take little pressure off.”
“Just a smidge,” he joked.
You laughed, “Um, here have a seat. I have my speech written out. I know we have to give it to the producers before showtime so they can put it on the teleprompter, but I wanted to maybe compare in case we have some similar parts, so we’re not repeating each other.”
“Oh, yeah, good idea,” he nodded walking over to sit next to you on the small red couch.
“So, basically um, I start off with some personal memories and moments...” you said. “Uh... actually if you want, you could just uh read it...”
“Oh, okay, yeah, sure,” he said.
You handed him your journal and he read over it. Sitting there while he read it, you instantly regretted it because you were feeling super awkward.
“Wow, that’s... amazing,” he said. “I’m a little self-conscious about my own speech now.”
“Sorry...” you laughed.
“In comparison to my speech, I think they’re going to fit well together,” he said. “Yours is from a more personal side, which makes sense and mine, while there are some personal aspects to it, it’s more so talking about her as an artist and her career achievements. I have it on my phone, if you want to read mine.”
Before you could answer, he took his phone out of his pocket holding it out in your direction. You nodded, taking it in your hand and looking it over.
“Did your mom really say that?” You laughed once you were finished.
“Still does, actually. All the time,” he joked.

This was it. The performance was less than twenty minutes away. You were in your dressing room waiting for them to call you to the stage. You would be opening up the show with Stevie, which you knew the whole time, but now that it was time for it to happen, your nerves were back. It also didn’t help that you watch the stupid live-stream of the red carpet while you were getting your hair and makeup done seeing exactly who was going to be in the audience.
Yes, it didn’t really matter, but that didn’t help your nerves at all. There was a knock on your door before it opened it. You looked up in the mirror to see your Aunt standing there.
“I figured I’d find you in here,” she said.
“Because you knew I’d be freaking the fuck out?” You mumbled.
“Yes, because you’ve always done this,” she said. “Before any big show, you always second guess yourself and your talent. You constantly reassure yourself, you’re fine, but you’re not.”
“You’re right, I’m not,” you groaned.
“Okay, sit down. I’ve got work to do,” she said.
You sighed sitting down on the couch and looking at her.
“When they told me I was being inducted, they told me to chose which songs I wanted to perform. Out of all of my songs, I chose Edge of Seventeen as the first song, do you know why?” She asked.
“Because it’s a great song...” you said.
“No, because that song reminds me of you. Ever since you walked out on the stage as a three year old little girl, that became your song for me. I know it was quite a few years ago, but do you remember how you felt that night on the stage?” She asked.
You nodded, “I didn’t really have a care in the world. I just wanted to be on stage next to you.”
“Exactly, so take that feeling up with you on stage tonight,” she smiled. “Along with this...”
She grabbed the bag, you didn’t realize she had, and took out a black hat.
“Is that-” you asked.
“I want you to have it,” she smiled. “And I’m glad it goes perfectly with your outfit.”
Your lips pulled into a smile as you wrapped your arms around her, “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she smiled.

Since Stevie was opening the show, Harry stood side stage to watch the performances before he was due on stage. The audience went wild as soon as the opening notes started playing and Stevie appeared on stage. You were standing next to her, playing guitar and singing along. You were wearing a black velvet blazer with a lace bralette underneath, paired with matching flared pants with a light pink accent inside the flares and black heeled boots.
You were also wearing a black hat, something Harry instantly recognized. He couldn’t take his eyes off of you as you performed. There was a smile across your face the entire performance and even though he had his own performance in less than ten minutes, he was a little sad when the song was over.
Stevie quickly embraced you at the end of the performance, kissing your cheek. You smiled pulling away and clapping for her before making your way off the stage. When you came down the steps, you saw Harry standing there in a bright blue velvet suit.
“You fucking killed it,” he said. “Wow. I think I should have gone first, you’re a bloody natural.”
“Thank you,” you smiled taking a sip of water. “But don’t worry, you’ll get it done.”
He smiled and the two of stood side by side while you watched the other performance.

When it was time for Harry to go up on stage, you watched the whole thing. You were blown away. You knew the two of them had performed together previously, but this was the first time you were witnessing it first hand.
After his performance, Harry joined you backstage again. He took a few gulps of water while you two waited for your speeches.
“I think Tom Petty would be proud,” you stated. “You really did a great job honoring him.”
A pink tint flushed his cheeks, “T-thank you,” he smiled.
“Y/N, Harry, you’re on in five minutes,” one of the producers said.
You both nodded, “Ready to do this?” You asked.
“More than ready,” he smiled.
You both were standing backstage waiting for your cue. When it was time, Harry offered his arm to you, you smiled wrapping your hand around it before the two of you walked out on stage.
“First I would like to say, what an honor it is to be here tonight. To celebrate this amazing achievement for the one and only Stevie Nicks. But she isn’t just Stevie Nicks to me. She’s Aunt Stephanie. I’ve had the honor and blessing to grow up with her by my side. Because of her, I’m not only the person I am today, but also the musician I am today.
It was at one of her shows, that I discovered that this is where I wanted to be, up on stage in front of thousands of people, telling a story through music. Because that’s exactly what she did and still does, I might add. She was more than just apart of my family, she was also a friend. Someone I could always go to whenever I needed someone.
The very first song I learned on guitar was Landslide. I remember when I played it for her after hours and weeks of practice, I was so excited, yet nervous because I wanted her to like. I wanted her to have faith in me. So, I played it for her around bonfire we were having in the backyard of my parents house. I was seven years old, holding a guitar that was bigger than me.
When I was finished, I quickly looked to her for approval and her exact words were, “It was okay, but you could do better.” Now, I know what you all are probably thinking, but it wasn’t meant in that way. She meant that I needed to make the song my own. Yes, she wrote it and it was her song, but if I was going to sing it, I needed to make it my own.
Of course, at seven years old I had no clue what that meant exactly, but I was determined to figure it out. So, everyday for the next few weeks, I locked myself in my room and did everything I could to “make it my own.”
And I never did. Not until she told me to stop worrying about what she thought or just focus on what I felt when I heard the song.
See that’s the thing with my Aunt Stevie, she was never one to focus on herself. She always tries to help others find their best self. She taught me so many things, not just with music, but in life and how the two coincide together.
When I wrote my first song, I remember she told me that you want to tell a story. You want to give the song a meaning. You want to touch not only other people who listen to your music, but also yourself because if you don’t love and feel a connection with your creation, then nothing else matters.
And she said the same thing to me tonight. I won’t lie to you and say that being here tonight isn’t scary or a little daunting. And hell, tonight isn’t even about me, but she made sure I was okay. She made sure that I knew I was good enough to be standing next to her.
So, yeah, all the amazing things she’s done over her career may have gotten her this amazing honor, but she’s more than just musician. She’s an absolute fucking legend, both as a musician and a person.
Aunt Stephanie, I, along with everyone else Welcome you to the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame for the second time,” you smiled.
Applause took over the room. Harry walked up to the microphone and laughed, “Um, I think I’m just gonna go after that one,” he joked.
You laughed standing back a bit while Harry gave his speech. The audience was captivated the entire time and laughed at the bit about his mother. When his speech was over, Stevie walked over and you both handed her the award. She smiled hugging both of you tightly before walking over to the microphone, while you and Harry stood to the side to give her, her moment.

Backstage there were tons of press and interviews, you had do, once that was over, you went back to your dressing room. You took off the hat and drank some water, when heard someone knocking on your door.
“It’s open,” you said turning to face the door.
Harry poked his head, “Hey, sorry to bother you, but uh, I uh... I was going to grab some dinner with some friends in a bit and I wanted to uh, give you an invitation if you would like to join.”
“Oh, uh, um, sure, give me like ten minutes?” You asked.
“Perfect,” he smiled before leaving.
You looked back in the mirror and touched up your makeup and hair before grabbing your things and heading out.
“There’s my girl!” You heard your dad say when you walked out of the room.
“Hey, Dad,” you smiled hugging him. “You still good? You’re not gonna like pass out or anything?”
He rolled his eyes, “I’ve been doing this before you were even born.”
“Exactly,” you laughed.
“So, I was thinking we could grab a bite to eat before heading back to the hotel. Stevie’s coming, she’ll be ready in a bit,” he said.
“Um, actually, I have plans,” you said.
“Oh, you do?” He sounded surprised.
“Um, yeah, Harry, invited me out to dinner with some of his friends,” you said.
“He did... I didn’t know you knew him,” he said.
“Well, I mean, tonight’s the first night I’ve met him,” you said.
“And he’s already asking you out for dinner,” he raised an eyebrow.
“Oh my god, it’s not like that,” you rolled your eyes.
“Let her go, Y/Dad’s/Name,” Stevie said from behind him. “It’s just dinner besides they need some time to talk, get to know each other.. you know.”
Both you and your dad looked at her.
“What?” She asked.
“Are you trying to play matchmaker with my daughter?” Your dad asked.
“Go have a good time, Y/N. Now, let’s go, I’m starving,” she said walking past you and your father without answering the question.
“Just let me know when you get back to the hotel,” he said.
You laughed nodding, shaking you head before going to find Harry.

On the ride to the restaurant, you two talked about the events of the night and other little small talk conversation topics. When you got there, you both walked in and saw a table with a quite a few people. The only two chairs that were left, were right next to each other, so you and Harry sat down.
“Hey, everyone, this is Y/N. Y/N, these are my friends,” Harry smiled.
“We have names,“ Jeff smirked.
You laughed, “Nice to meet you,” you smiled.
You took the menu and skimmed over it before deciding on what to order. Everyone at the table was having their own conversations, so you looked over at Harry.
“So, I feel like I should probably tell you this, but I have a feeling my Aunt is trying to hook us up,” you laughed.
“You got that feeling too?” He laughed.
“She basically admitted to it,” you laughed. “And when I saw admitted, it was more of by omission. She changed the subject when my Dad brought it up.”
He laughed, “Just so you know that’s not why I invite you here tonight. I did that on my own accord.”
“You did, did you?” You smirked causing him to blush.
“I did,” he nodded.
You smiled tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “Are you staying in New York long?”
“Just another day. I’m flying out the day after next,” he said. “You?”
“Actually, staying a few more days. I have some meetings,” you said.
“Oh, are you working on a new album?” He asked.
“Sort of,” you laughed. “There’s a little bit a discussion going on.”
“That sounds.. interesting,” he said.
“I’d give you more details, but I don’t have them myself,” you laughed.
Harry was just about to say something when you heard a familiar voice call out your name. You looked up, past Harry and saw one of your closest friends, who actually was also your ex-boyfriend from when you were a teenager.
“Joe?” You smiled.
You stood up from the table, walking over to him. “What are you doing here?”
“Me and Sophie were just having dinner, when I saw you. Thought I’d come by and say hi,” he said.
“I’m glad you did,” you smiled hugging him.
“Hey, the Hall of Fame thing was tonight, right? How’d that go?” he asked.
“It went,” you laughed. “It was fucking everything, at least I think so.”
“Well, you kill it every time,” he smiled.
“Oh, let me introduce you,” you said. “Joe this is Harry Styles, Harry this is Joe Jonas.”
“Oh, hey man,” Joe said holding out his hand.
“Hey,” Harry nodded shaking his hand.
Joe looked over at you smirking, “Fuck off,” you mumbled.
He laughed, “Anyway, I’ll let you get back to your date... I mean dinner. Text me later?”
“I hate you,” you rolled your eyes.
“If only,” he joked. “Bye,” he waved to Harry before walking away.
“Sorry about that,” you said sitting back down.
“No, it’s okay,” he smiled. “Their new record’s pretty good.”
“Yeah, I’m glad they’re back,” you smiled. “I think they’re doing a show tomorrow night, would you want to go with me?”
“Um, sure, I don’t think I’ve got anything planned,” he said.
“Okay, I’ll send you the details later,” you smiled.
“Is that your way of asking me for my number?” He smirked.
“Damn, you got me,” you giggled.
He laughed, “Hand me your phone?”
You took it out of your purse and handed it to him. He quickly added himself as a contact in your phone before handing it back to you. You smiled opening up new message and sending him a smiling face emoji.
“There now we both have each other’s numbers,” you smiled.

Over an hour had passed from getting your food and finishing it. You didn’t realize how long you all had been at the restaurant until you got a text from your dad.
Still Alive?
Are any of us really alive?
Drunk?
On a scale of sober to Mom at Bradley and Max’s wedding, I’m like somewhere in the middle.
So, you’re like normal drunk.
Sure. Let’s go with that.
Do I need to come get you?
Dad, I’m joking! I’ve only had like one drink and I didn’t even finish it. We’re finishing up here, I’ll be back at the hotel soon. Promise.
His hotel or your hotel.
SERIOUSLY. CAN YOU NOT.
Hey, I’m just asking questions here.
Questions you don’t need to know the answers too. But if you must know. MY hotel.
Good answer. I’m going to bed. Good night and I love you.
Oh and I’m proud of you tonight. Good job.
Thanks Dad. I’ll see you at breakfast in the morning. Goodnight.
“Everything okay?” Harry asked.
“Oh, yeah, but I should probably get going. I didn’t realize how late it was getting and I’ve got a meeting in the morning,” you said.
“Of course, let me get you car,” he said.
“Oh, no that’s okay. I can get it,” you said.
“It’s fine, I need to get one too anyway,” he smiled.
“Okay,” you agreed. “But I’ll get you one for tomorrow night.”
He laughed,”Sounds good.”
After a few more minutes, your cars had arrived outside of the building. You two both headed out the door, when you saw that there were not only paparazzi there, but also fans waiting outside. They all screamed when they saw both you and Harry, so you both walked over to them.
You each took a few photos and signed some things before heading saying goodbye and heading out to your cars. Harry gave you quick hug before opening the door for you and getting in his own car. As few moments after your car had pulled away, you got an alert on your phone.
I had a really great time tonight. Looking forward to seeing you again, H.
You bit your lip trying to hide the smile threatening to cross your lips. You didn’t want to jinx it or say anything too quickly, but it appeared that Aunt Stevie just might get her wish granted.

Meet The Harveys
NWI native and Chicago resident Charlie Evans wants to introduce you to his one man band The Harveys, whose debut album, after over a year in the making, is nearing the completion stage. As Evans labors through the finishing touches of the LP and prepares it for public release, he sits down with me to talk about the project and tells us what we can expect from his esoteric alter-ego.
HW: You're getting ready to release your first LP; a collection of songs you're putting out under the name The Harveys. But essentially The Harveys is just you. What made you decide to release music as a fictional collective rather than under your own name?
CE: The Harveys isn't a real band right now, so the idea that it can be locked into only one thing doesn't appeal to me since I don't have to fight other people to have it be whatever it needs to be. I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of existing as a solo act. I feel like the idea of the Harveys started as a crutch of being afraid to do this on my own. For whatever reason, the idea of having a fictional band made it seem like a more viable project in my head, and more approachable as something to present out to the world.
HW: But you're not literally the only player on the record. Who else appears on the album, and in what capacity?
CE: One song is an old one that was written as a group by Patrick Biancardi, Sam Evans, and myself....
HW: Right...that's Werewolf Teacher, isn't it? That's a great song and I remember you telling me that it has its origins in your time as a member of (now defunct Region band) Greenstone.
CE: Greenstone was a great time as a band, and helped form a lot of the stuff that I wrote and created on this album. When I began working on recording I wanted to get an old song down that we had never had the chance to properly record. It was a great point to learn how to use recording software and to test the viability of the fictional band project. A lot of the music I wrote afterwards feels similar in some ways to what we were working on with that project, but definitely is a different animal. Not writing in collaboration with other people or having to compromise things is both a blessing and a curse.
HW: Who are some of the other people who pitched in to help make this LP?
CE: Alex Akers contributed trumpet to I Sit Differently at the Piano. I met Alex while I was working for New Oberpfalz brewery, and we struck up conversation pretty naturally. I had completed about half of the the track, adding in the vocal snippet and guitar, but I felt that guitar all the way through would be frankly boring. I basically asked Alex if he wanted to add trumpet to a weird track that I had made and sent it over. About a week later he sent me his layered tracks and it was amazing! My primary instrument is the electric guitar, so it's always really awesome to work with other instrumentalists that can bring a completely different feel to a track. That song wouldn't work without Alex's contribution. Jake Egli plays the keyboards on The Somnambulist and helped me mix and master the record along with production work.
I'm definitely open to the idea of adding a more collaborative element to The Harveys. I would love to be able to flesh it out into a full band setting. I think a lot of these songs would translate pretty well to a live setting, and there's lots of song ideas in reserve. There's always ego involved in adding other people to a band, but I enjoy the collaborative aspect of writing music a lot. Sometimes it's okay to come in with an idea and see how it gets morphed into something completely new, original, and different that way.
HW: Having grown up as an aspiring musician in NWI and now living in Chicago, can you compare the two locales where musical heritage is concerned?
CE: I would say that both have a lot in common with each other, with Chicago getting the edge of diversity simply through pure numbers. Not unlike most other suburbs of Chicago, NWI filters a lot of its musical identity from Chicago, which I think is great. The Chicagoland area has an abundance of amazing music that doesn't always get the attention it deserves on the national stage.
HW: You recorded this LP at home on your computer. Were there any technical limitations that you encountered while making the record that, had you been in a studio, you might not have had to deal with?
CE: I think the biggest hurdle for doing all recording on my own is that my ear wasn't as trained, especially in the beginning, at what was good and what was bad. I improved rapidly, but especially early on I think that having a 2nd set of ears to hear everything is very helpful.
HW: Why did you decide to release a physical LP and how do you plan to market it? What streaming formats will you be utilizing?
CE: I love the idea and the ritual of vinyl...placing the vinyl on the turntable, setting it to the right speed, and letting the needle hit the record. There’s an art to creating a track list and an album that flows correctly from side to side. I think the best records still work with that duality; breaking it down into two shorter playlists and making sure those statements stand on their own and complement each other. That being said, I think the songs stand on their own, so I don’t mind pushing it to streaming as well where the majority of people (myself included) discover their music. I’m planning on releasing The Harveys on all major streaming services. The LP version of the album will be funded through a Kickstarter.
What I like about the idea of a vinyl release and giving yourself those limitations is that it really forces you to look at how songs flow as a cohesive unit. Balancing the amount of time you can put on a side along with making sure that each track is keeping the listener along for the ride is so important. Additionally, the 2 side nature of vinyl makes you look at it as a mini suite for each side. My process was mostly trying to balance all of these things to make the strongest single unit of an album. Sifting through all the songs I had written to put together what I feel is a cohesive album was a bit difficult at first, there’s definitely enough material left off to have an extra EP in the future or work towards another album. For me, I think the unifying threads that make this album stand as a whole are some of the themes touched on like growing up and the somewhat lonely existence that adulthood can be. There’s plenty of humor on the record, though, as well, which I feel is always needed. I don’t trust people who are too serious about everything. There's a lot of genre exploration that I wasn't able to make work cohesively on this record that could definitely fit in better on a slightly different project. I would love to create a great medley style suite, ala Abbey Road. I'd love to do something soaring, epic, and heartfelt like that.
HW: There are very few recording artists who so confidently pull off such a varied palette as what you've proven capable of on this LP; some that come to mind as exceptions are Ween and Captain Beefheart and Zappa and Guided By Voices. Were any of those artists a lighthouse for you while you were crafting these songs?
CE: All those bands and artists are huge influences, Ween in particular. Reading and getting into Ween was a huge part of what made me finally get off my butt and start making music again. The independent spirit that drove each of these artists to create despite not necessarily having the big push of a label was a huge inspiration. Learning about Ween using a drum machine and writing silly songs and just generally not caring what other people thought of them was a liberating idea, and also made my excuses for why I wasn’t doing anything seem like just that: excuses.
HW: Speaking of tracks that DIDN'T make the record, Feed Me, Human is one of your standout songs and I feel like it exists in a world of its own stylistically; some kind of avant garde heavy metal oddity...definitely something I haven't heard before. Is metal a big part of your musical tastes, and if so what can you tell me about this track? It sort of skirts a strange territory that's both playful and sinister.
CE: I love metal! Metal as a genre is so tongue in cheek, and I love that about it. I never trust any metal band that takes themselves 100% seriously. I remember reading a story that Adam Jones from Tool told about how when he met Buzz Osbourne from the Melvins he told him that Boris was his favorite song and was a foundation for a lot of how he built his songwriting and sound, and Buzz responded something along the lines of, "Thanks, it's about my cat." Metal is so great because it can occupy both territories of sinister and silly.
HW: Let's focus on what did make the album. Metropolitan Malaise is unabashed power pop exuberance; Hydration is Key is a blissed out, psychedelic signal from another galaxy. You cover Big Star's 1972 acoustic masterpiece 13, and then there's the aforementioned I Sit Differently at the Piano; four minutes of Badalementi-esque guitar and trumpet noodling atop which sits a bizarre sampling of an interview with a mental patient from the early 60s. The Funkalator struts and swaggers with ballsy, bell bottomed moxie, and Werewolf Teacher is textbook singer-songwriter gold. And that's just HALF the album. But maybe the standout track here is The Somnambulist, a disarming number that begins with a tribal, measured acoustic bounce before exploding into a veritable roman candle of life-affirming guitar-fueled adrenaline.
CE: I'm particularly proud of The Somnambulist. It has the most overdubs of any track, and took me the longest to assemble out of any of them. I'm particularly proud of my vocal performance, which incubated in my head for a pretty long time, and took even longer to build up the ability to properly sing. It's the classic rock track I always wanted to write.
HW: What's your writing process like? What do you find is the most challenging part of the formula?
CE: Wake up, make some coffee pick up my guitar and start playing something...pulling up Garageband and a virtual drummer and see if I can get anything useful out of it. Record it, and see if there’s enough there to develop. Sometimes there's something good there for a full song, sometimes there isn't. I built a lot of songs on the fly, and would do multiple takes of things to see what worked or didn’t work. Having a good feedback network of people to send songs to certainly helped as well to guide the directions that were working and not working in the music. I think the most challenging thing for me with this project was not really working with other musicians to create. If I wanted to finish the song, it was on me!
HW: I really appreciate you taking the time to offer a little insight into what we can expect from The Harveys. I really think you've assembled a great collection of songs and I'm really looking forward to the vinyl.
CE: I think the biggest thing I’m hoping to offer is a bit of a blast of nostalgia that isn’t hopefully too derivative. Power pop and dad rock have reached the level of being uncool, but I still love making it. I’m hoping that I can bring some uncool music to people and hopefully get them to dig into the same things I love too. I was talking with Jake while we were mixing and mastering and we both said waiting for lightning to strike will involve you mostly waiting. It’ll happen, and does happen, but you have to work at it no matter what.
