After the Revolution, Here is Napoleon

The French singer Serge Lama, passionate about the history of Napoleon Bonaparte, decided to dedicate a two-part album to him between 1982 and 1984 illustrating the major parts of the emperor's life

The good sales of the two albums will lead Serge Lama to consider transforming his songs into a musical show with small theater scenes

It will be in September 1984 in Paris at the Théâtre Marigny that Serge Lama will become Napoleon 1st

To summarize the story :

In 1830 a troupe of actors improvised a play on the life of the former French emperor : Napoleon Bonaparte, his exploits, his love stories and his mysterious death in exile on a lonely island ...

The show was performed for three years in France then in Canada

It is also the first French Musical filmed in its entirety ! (something extremely rare at the time)

Just before concluding I just want to add a little unnecessary anecdote, Serge's work is internationally known but not his face, he is the creator of " Je suis malade " that everyone knows only through the reinterpretation of Lara Fabian :

Je suis malade

[I generally do not write about non Eurovision things, but I've spent a good hour listening to one song sung several ways and I need to share it. Two of the performers have been to the Eurovision, so I guess it has an inkling of relevance.]

I don't like cover versions of songs. I think that they spoil the song. Google search the title of this one and you will find Voice contestants and children butchering this song no end. There are always exceptions and I wanted to present two cover versions that improve the song with each new version.

The Original

A reasonably good song, sung in that classic Serge Lama style of sing speaking. In my personal opinion, which has sadly been tainted a bit by watching the two cover versions, Serge emotes the least of the performances , but it is still magnetic.

Dalida is a tortured heroine of French music and this song portrays her life in a very concise capsule. Knowing her story makes this performance so personal and so powerful to watch. The emotion is real and captivating. There is an urgency to her performance, but also a delicate touch like she doesn't know what to do with herself and the vacancy left behind.

This version blows everyone away. Lara Fabian is a star and she has the vocals to make anything sound extraordinary. But this is a masterclass in capturing the emotion of the text. She does not sing the song with any urgency but tell the story in a painfully stressed way that captures you, strings you along until the very conclusion. And then, you remember to breathe again.
