I wanted to highlight something that came at as a surprise to me is that as I already said this this was a French TV show. I’m just curious to know how the French felt about their show being taken by the English. I couldn’t find much about it but I did read a snippet from the Guardian that said Danot was less happy with Dougla’s English name. Apparently because he was convinced Thompson was having a sly dig at the French president Charles de Gaulle. To be honest I’d have thought they’d be more of a conflict since the French and English don’t have the best of relations with one another. However Serge Danotwas not a fan of the colour green and so I think that was respected by Eric Thompson who mostly avoided the colour.

Today’s animated film is: “Dougal and the Blue Cat” (1970)
“When Buxton the Blue Cat arrives in the magic garden, Dougal is no longer the centre of attention. Suspicious, Dougal does some investigating and is horrified by what he finds.”

10 octobre 2022 Dominique Dubois #cugand#vendee #hellfest #pollux #clisson#igershellfest#paysdelaloire #festival https://www.instagram.com/p/CjkOYLgNWuE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT - ORIGINAL BBC 1970's EPISODE
Now if you want overdubbing in another language to another script as the original was in French and lost, then there’s the Magic Roundabout by Serge Danot, who was the French geezer responsible, with the English version by Eric Thompson.
Kiddies stuff was wonderfully surreal.

Feedback
Feedback session by Andrea McSwan
After showcasing my current work in progress I was suggested another cartoon to which I could influence my background design on known as ‘The Magic Roundabout’.
“The Magic Roundabout is a BBC children’s television program, later to be aired on Channel 4 was created in France by Serge Danot in 1963. The original pilot programs were filmed in Serge Danot bathroom, the French version of the show was known in France as Le Manège enchanté.”

This cartoon has similar features with initial influence ‘Pocoyo’ and could be seen as an influence for future development of my story.

168. Dougal and the Blue Cat (1970)
Tumblr media
5/10
This is a feature based on the television show The Magic Roundabout, both originally being in French, and dubbed into English without translated scripts to work from. This means that the English show, The Magic Roundabout, and the French version, Le Menage enchante, contain totally different stories and characters, accompanying the same images. The name, of course, refers to what British people call a roundabout (a carousel) and not an actual roundabout. The English TV show was very popular with adults as well as children, for its saturnine sense of humor and unusual cast of characters (I myself particularly liked the guitar-playing rabbit, Dylan, who we are first introduced to as he is watching his mushrooms grow.)
In the Garden, where the characters live, a newcomer arrives – a blue cat named Buxton. Everyone is enamored with him except for the main character, the surly Skye terrier, Dougal. He knows Buxton is up to something, but no one believes him until Buxton imprisons everyone, except Dougal, beneath an abandoned factory, revealing his plot to turn the entire world blue. Dougal then must work alone to overthrow Buxton, the "Blue King."
Most of the characters are voiced by one man, whose voice I personally didn't like, though I understand he was the one writing the English language stories, and is the reason the show was successful in English to begin with. I also found the generally hostile attitude of the characters, particularly Dougal, to be disturbing, especially considering the target audience theoretically consisting mainly of children.
