she's sure that hanna doesn't mean it as an insult, but it still hits a nerve, a harsh reminder that pippa hasn't been going about this as well as she thought. she doesn't have any friends waiting for her back at home, and it's not lost on her that the friends she's made in college so far have been more about proximity than they have been about a genuine connection, but she is trying to navigate this new world where she actually has a fresh start at something she never got the chance to have before. and she meant it when she said hanna's her best friend — even if the options are limited. lucy and bree are great, but despite how much time she's spent with them, she's never felt like she could actually open up to them. and even though she hasn't done that with hanna either, she still feels closer to her than them — like she actually has the chance to be real with her.

❝  okay. whatever, ❞ her words are monotone, feigning a disinterest even though a small smile gives her away. she shakes off the nerves that come with the accidental callout, reminding herself that this isn't just hanna seeing right through her. she's teasing, like friends do. ❝  my friends from high school aren't exactly the kind i'm dying to get back to, ❞ she lies, because there's no one, but she's only trying to recover now. ❝  so i guess you're just the best offer i've got now, ❞ she jokes.
