martel much preferred the sweet honey soaked cakes of her adulthood, as she remembers the year mithos finally turned the tables on her and asked why she didn’t have a birthday too? and he never forgot all those years after, solidifying that even if she didn’t care much about her birth, it mattered to him. it was always difficult to celebrate during wartime... but the four of them had made do, hadn’t they? those moments of normalcy had held them together, and made them stronger. honey sweet memories sneaking away to lakes to play and fields to nap in.

long ago she coined her special birthday tradition: a kiss on one cheek for the past year, and a kiss on the other symbolizing the move to the next and how love would carry over, and finally a kiss on the forehead so the mind would not forget. with that ceremony, they would know that they mattered, that they were important, that they were loved in the world that didn’t care much for any of them. laying in the sun, arms out, martel can almost feel the wind itself kiss her thrice as to remind her that she and everyone else belonged here.

she doesn’t even know how old she is now, not really... was she to stop counting upon losing her aging? how about upon death? could life extend beyond, in such a trapped existence for the thousands of years she spent trapped? if that were the case, then she’s as unbearably ancient as she sometimes feels with such a weakened body and inability to truly recall the years. but the taste of honey is a memory that doesn’t fade from her tongue, like a craving she’ll hold with her all day as she resolves to do nothing but bask in the sun all day, on this birthday.

If anyone ever went after her, he’d target and eliminate them, but he will say that he will kill her, no one else will. To put in perspective, Reaper could have killed her a long time ago, but he hasn’t. He is convinced he can, but the moment he is in front of her, he’ll realize he won’t.

It’s hard to distinguish his beliefs. He isn’t superstitious, but he doesn’t outright believe there isn’t unnatural things out there that fall away from the scientific. His mind just isn’t wired to believe the cause of the unexplained to be supernatural. If something supernatural does happen, he won’t react. It is like it doesn’t process and he’ll almost like…ignore it? Continue on like it didn’t happen even though it very well did. A Day in the Life of Samantha Michelle, a Toronto-born DJ Who’s Opened For Mark Ronson

“About five years ago I plugged in my iPod at a party. Next thing I knew I was DJing, and next thing I knew I was playing Glastonbury at a secret garden party.”

Samantha Michelle’s life has taken her all over the place, figuratively and literally—studying religion and foreign policy at NYU, acting in plays and learning about European cultural history at Oxford, running a vintage shop in Toronto (where she grew up), writing and directing her own short films, and most recently, DJing at high-profile gigs and developing a female-focused film festival in New York.

“Opening for Mark Ronson for the Wall Street Journal at their Cannes Lions closing party was amazing,” she says of her favourite recent gigs, when I meet her over tea at a Toronto cafe. “I DJ’d at Drag on Queen here in Toronto—I got to open for a bunch of drag queens, which was really fun. I also work a lot with the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York. I did a CBGB tribute show for them and Debby Harry turned up. I was like, do I play Blondie in front of Blondie? I think I should!”

Aside from DJing gigs, she has directed two short films (her most recent, In the Campfire Light, will be premiering at the Ojai Film Festival in California in November) and is part of the creative team behind Female Voices Rock, a female-focused film festival that will hold its inaugural edition in New York in October. Here, a behind-the-scenes peek at a day in her very busy calendar.

8am Every day is so different, which is one of the things that I love about it, but on average I get up around 8am. I live in New York now, but I’m probably only there about half the time. (I travel a lot and also come to Toronto around once a month, which is great because it’s where I’m from and I get to see my family and friends.) So I get up around 8 and usually go and get a coffee or a tea—I used to be a smoker but I quit smoking six months ago so I still need to go through the morning rhythm of the walk to just get fresh air, see what it feels like outside. I try to avoid Starbucks as much as I can; it’s nice to go to independent places. There’s a great place called Newsbar near me, in Greenwich Village, which I love. Then I get home and open my laptop.

9am I normally do about an hour or so of emails, phone calls, text messages, just catching up on stuff. As creative director of the film festival, I’m managing our partnerships, so I’ve been doing a lot of outreach to different women’s organizations through people in my network and the film world who care or can help spread the word. I’m also in post-production on my film which again is all really working from home—phone calls, emails with different people and the team. I like working from home because I’m on the road so much. I’d say most days I’ve not had a shower or put on any makeup until maybe 2, 3, 4 in the afternoon.

11am I typically work on playlists in the mornings. It gets me too excited—if I try to do it in bed at night I won’t sleep. I get really jazzed about it, so it’s something I’ll normally do in the mornings before I work out.

Noon After that I usually will go to the gym, or do a yoga class or do Pilates or something. If I don’t feel like working out I will go for a long walk and call my dad and he’ll be walking the dog in Toronto, and I’ll be going in circles around Washington Square Park.

2pm Then normally I’ll eat. I’m not a very good cook, but I’m a total creature of habit when it comes to food, so I’ll go and pick up an omelet from Grey Dog. I live really close to an independent equivalent of Whole Foods and they have big salads and stuff. Sometimes if it’s a slower-paced day and I have time to make a salad at home I will, but usually I’m just picking something up.

3pm In the afternoon I’ll usually have a couple of meetings. I tend to try and make my meetings in the afternoon as much as I can so I have an uninterrupted morning at home. For the film festival, I’m also working on amazing sponsorships so there’s a lot of back and forth emails, meetings and conversations with different write-ins and partners and people who want to join the coalition, and just managing all of those relationships.

6pm If I’m not DJing I usually see friends and I like to do stuff like go to the movies, go to the theatre, or go for dinner. My friends and I really like this place called Fish on Bleecker Street in the West Village. They do a really great wine and oysters special. I love ordering in too. Because I’m out so much, there’s something so nice about getting breakfast delivered to you at 11 o’clock at night (I often eat dinner quite late). I love the movies, I take myself to the movies all the time if I just feel like getting out. I love going to the theatre, that’s one of my favourite things. I recently saw this fantastic play called What the Constitution Means To Me which is a one-woman show about how the constitution has failed to serve and support women. It’s phenomenal.

8pm If I’m DJing, I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to getting ready. If I spend more than five minutes on my makeup, I’ll just keep on putting on more eye-shadow or more blush or whatever, and then the next thing I know I’m like, uh, what happened to my face. And I hate looking like I’ve been too made up; it feels really un-me.

In terms of what I’m wearing, I’ll never make a decision until it’s five minutes before I leave the house. Comfort is really important, so I don’t wear shoes I can’t walk in or clothes that are too tight. I never want to feel like I want something to be over, just so I can be comfortable again. I love super tall shoes but I won’t wear high-heels that are flat under the toe, because I just feel like I’m going to fall over. So wedges were life-changing for me. I think my style’s quite ’60s and ’70s-influenced, so I like big tall wedges, silky flowy things, colourful things. I like things that are a bit androgynous, like a pantsuit. I have tiny boobs, so I take absolute advantage of it and wear crochet tops and dresses strategically pinned together with safety pins.

9pm I make a really conscientious effort to make sure that at least one night a week I just have no plans and hangout with myself and do whatever I feel like with myself, usually it means sitting on my sofa eating vegan ice cream and watching TV. I wander into a different space creatively in the evenings because I’m not getting people texting and emailing me. So this is the time to write, and work on scripts, and read and just dream things up in my head.

‘Project Runway’ Winners: Where Are They Now?

Project Runway has been a guilty pleasure for fans since 2009. After living on Bravo for five seasons, the show found a home on Lifetime, and so did the esteemed judges Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia and Zac Posen. 

Over 16 seasons, fashion designers from all over the globe have gotten the opportunity to find their voice, including designer Christian Siriano, who was just 22 years old when he won season four. Ashley Tipton was the first designer to use all plus-size models during season 14, and Kentaro Kameyama, the 38-year-old designer from Los Angeles, has been busy working on a new line since his win during the most recent season 16. 

After a bit of a hiatus, Project Runway will be returning to Bravo for season 17, with Klum returning as host. Although we don’t have a definitive premiere date just yet, it’s likely it will air this fall.

“Project Runway is coming back where it all started, it's coming home on Bravo," Andy Cohen announced during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation last month. This is in addition to the Project Runway spinoff, Project Runway: All Stars, which has been renewed for a seventh season. 

While we wait for season 17 to grace our television screens, here's what the former winners have been up to since their last appearance on the show.  

Jay McCarroll, Season 1 McCarroll is known as one of the few Project Runway winners to never win a single challenge until the final runway show. After winning the show in 2005, he appeared on Project Jay, Eleven Minutes, and VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club. For a while, he was running a blog and online fashion boutique, but the site hasn’t been updated since 2014. He is still active on his Instagram page, though, with a bio stating, “I like colors and stuff.”

Chloe Dao, Season 2 After winning season two of Project Runway, Dao went on to executive produce and judge the first season of Project Runway: Vietnam, which ran for three seasons starting in 2013. In 2008, she debuted her own line called DAO Chloe DAO, which is now a boutique in her hometown of Houston. She’s also active in Houston-area philanthropies including Susan G. Komen and the Salvation Army of Houston. 

Jeffrey Sebelia, Season 3 Sebelia was portrayed as somewhat of a villain on his season of Project Runway, and many fans were upset when he won. Since then, Sebelia has worked on multiple projects designing kids clothing. In 2013, he participated in Project Runway: All Stars, where he placed seventh out of 11 contestants. 

Christian Siriano, Season 4 Known as one of the most successful Project Runway winners, Siriano was also the youngest person to ever win the show. He launched his namesake “Christian Siriano” clothing line in 2008 and now regularly dresses some of the biggest names in Hollywood like Victoria Beckham, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and even Kim Kardashian West.

Leanne Marshall, Season 5 Marshall has had huge success since winning Project Runway in 2008. She's most notably known for her feminine wave-inspired collection in shades of turquoise and ivory, which impressed judges week after week. She launched her own bridal collection in 2011, which is carried in over 35 boutiques internationally and online.

Irina Shabayeva, Season 6 Following season six of Project Runway, Shabayeva developed couture collections of gowns and wedding dresses, as well as a lingerie line. She got sixth place on season three of Project Runway: All Stars in 2013 and even launched a bridal line exclusive at Kleinfeld’s in 2011.

Seth Aaron Henderson, Season 7 Henderson was the first Project Runway contestant to win both a regular season of the show as well as season three of Project Runway: All Stars in 2014. He’s known for his sustainable designs using organic fabrics and recyclable plastic bottles, and even recently created a line of iPad covers for the brand Maroo. Last fall, he worked with the brand Feetz to release the first pair of 3D printed shoes.

Gretchen Jones, Season 8 Jones may be the most controversial winner of Project Runway ever. She won after a heated debate between the judges, who eventually chose her over fan favorite Mondo Guerra. This year, she graduated with an MBA in fashion from the University of London College of Fashion. She’s spoken publicly at SXSW, Columbia School of Business and Princeton University, and has been featured in numerous fashion magazines like Refinery29 and Elle.

Anya Ayoung-Chee, Season 9 Ayoung-Chee has launched both a boutique, Exhibit A, and a lingerie line, Anya de Rouge, since winning season nine of Project Runway, and even worked with Gunn on the reality show Under the Gunn in 2014 to mentor other designers. In her spare time, she’s also a travel ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago, where she currently lives.

Dmitry Sholokhov, Season 10 Sholokhov won season 10 of Project Runway as well as season four of Project Runway: All Stars. Since then, he has worked as an instructor at the Parsons School of Design (his alma mater) and has his own label, where he creates high-fashion yet wearable designs.

Michelle Lesniak, Season 11 Season 11 of Project Runway gave Michelle Lesniak the opportunity of a lifetime. Despite her lack of formal training, her daring looks gave her an edge in the competition. She now lives and works in Portland, Oregon, and has a studio in the city, where she does clothing and costume design, called Michelle Lesniak Boutique.

Dom Streater, Season 12 After Streater won both season 12 of Project Runway and season five of Project Runway: All Stars, she returned to Philadelphia to focus on her designs, launching an online-only womenswear brand. She was even named one of Nicole Miller’s "Most Fashionable Women of Philadelphia."

Sean Kelly, Season 13 Kelly's iconic color-changing dress for the "Rain" challenge helped him win season 13 of Project Runway. Gunn even called Kelly his favorite contestant by the time the season came to an end, so that’s a win in and of itself. Now, the New Zealand-born designer lives in New York City and has designed for clients like Klum and been featured in Marie Claire magazine. 

Ashley Nell Tipton, Season 14 Tipton was the first contestant on Project Runway to win by using all plus-size models. “This industry puts a bad view on plus-size women and the way we dress, and it’s because we don’t have options,” she told Buzzfeed during her season. Following her win in 2015, she designed a line with JCPenney and last fall launched her own plus-size line of apparel and eyewear called the ANT Premier Line.

Erin Robertson, Season 15 An alum of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, with a degree in both fashion and fiber art, Robertson returned to Boston following her Project Runway win and now has a studio space in the city, where she still designs.

Kentaro Kameyama, Season 16 In a surprising finish to season 16, Kameyama pulled out a win, shocking even the most stone-faced Project Runway judges. Posen went so far as to say that Kameyama “knocked his socks off.” Known for his expertly tailored clothing, the classically trained pianist even had his models walk to one of his original scores during the final show. Now, he’s living in Los Angeles and perfecting his new collection that premiered during Fashion Week earlier this year.

Jack enters their shared room somberly, posture hunched, creases decorating his forehead, and a frown contorting thin lips. There are a few visible bruises upon his neck ( others hidden from sight ) along with a diagonal cut seeping blood upon his pallid cheek. He sees Gabriel lying down on his bunk and he joins him, sitting on the edge of the narrow bed with a sigh, digits raking through his golden locks. ❝ Sometimes, I don't think I'm meant to be here... ❞

Almost instantly, Gabriel’s on his feet, his protective nature surging with indignation. 

He didn’t know what irritated him the most. The fact Jack that wandered into the room beaten up? Or was it because he walked into the room with a tone that told him this gringo didn’t fight back. “You gotta be fuckin’ kiddin’ me, Golden Boy.”

There was no malice in his voice, just exasperation as he made a beeline toward their drawers, rummaging through the layers of folded clothes to emerge with a tin box. Returning to his side, he dipped the edge of the bed, pulling out necessities. “Take this.” He handed him the bottle and dabbed the alcohol soaked cotton against the clotting blood, capturing his chin when Jack flinched. Despite his brawn and brutish outlook, Reyes could surprise people with how ginger those hands could be, carefully cleaning Jack’s wound and thumbing circles into his bruises. Little traits Mama Reyes embedded onto her son. 

The pregnant silence Gabe kept as he worked was broken and he never spared a glance. “I’m not always going to be here.” Resolute and straightforward. Reyes catered to no one’s feelings. Took no prisoners when he wanted to make his point across. He wasn’t one for saying bullshit cliches either. “You leave at night⎯in what I can only assume⎯is to train. But what’s the point if the ‘Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb’ brigade are still flanking your ass?” What was the point in working himself dead if he had no balls to show for it? “Condition your mind before you take on the big leagues, my man, because it isn’t all about brawn. Knocking a guy’s shit out does nothing for you if the mental bullet cripples you first.”

Beneath his disappointment, was his concern and as he finished, he took a breath. “Beating yourself does you nothing good. If you’re going to have that attitude ⎯ send yourself packing, solider. But if you want to do better, start now and do it.” Tossing soiled cottons into the bin and closing the box he set it aside, all the negativity dissolved with it. “Enough lecture. I’m starving and all this talking is just filling me up with air.”
