List: The Oldest Bars in Las Vegas

Tracking the oldest standalone bars in Las Vegas is a complicated by the matter of a few of them changing names, locations, or having fuzzy math in their own history. This list is not carved in stone but as far as I can tell the standalone bars opened prior to the '70s are ....

ATOMIC LIQUORS (917 Fremont) – opened 4/17/54. We have a longer piece covering Atomic’s history and sources for this date.

DINO’S LOUNGE (1516 S Las Vegas Blvd) – They’ve had this name since ’69, but the bar dates back to this location as Ringside Liquors since ’53, and at a previous location since the late 40s. (The last 4 digits of Dino's phone number date back to the 40s.) Their motto “Getting Vegas Drunk Since ’62” refers specifically to the business’s incorporation date. '53, '62, '69 are all correct dates depending on the details.

HUNTRIDGE TAVERN (1116 E Charleston Blvd) – circa ’62, after starting at a nearby location, 1320 E Charleston, in ’54. Founder W.L. “Buzz” Holst and family opened several drug stores and bars including the next one on this list.

DECATUR LIQUORS (546 S Decatur Blvd) – ’63

4 MILE BAR (3650 Boulder Hwy) – ’63

TAP HOUSE (5589 W Charleston Blvd) – opened as Wild Bill’s Bar in '65. It went through a few names in the 70s and has been known as Tap House since ’85.

CHAMPAGNE’S CAFE (3557 S Maryland Pkwy) – opened under a different name in ’66; Champagne’s Cafe since ‘96. It was originally Sundown Liquors and Cocktail Lounge opened in ’66, a liquor store up front and a lounge in the back. It was combined into one room that exists today and was previously known as Jerry’s Inner Circle (’68), Huey’s Saloon (’77), Jerry’s Saloon (’87), Ole Inner Circle (’93), and Champagne Charlie’s.

FRANKIE’S (1712 W Charleston Blvd) – Frank August opened Frankie’s Cocktails in '68. It’s been known as Frankie’s Tiki Lounge since 2009.

A couple in '70 ...

Hard Hat Lounge (1675 S Industrial Rd) – ’70. Their “Est. '62” motto works as a reference both to their ’62 building and to the beloved ’62 mural in the bar which came from its previous location under the name Bourbon Street Lounge. The building was home to The Coffee Pot and Squaw's Corner, until the owners of Bourbon Street Lounge moved here and opened Hard Hat Lounge.

Starboard Tack (2601 Atlantic St) – also opened in ’70 according to some records, or ‘71 at the latest. Their website says “since ’72.”

Elsewhere ...

Pioneer Saloon (Goodsprings NV) - Built by George Fayle circa '13, without a doubt the oldest bar in Clark County, Nevada.

Gold Mine (Henderson NV) - "Hendertucky's Oldest Tavern," was licensed to Henderson councilman Giles L. Franklin in Sep. '65.

Not quite on the Oldest Bar list ...

70s: Red Dwarf (1350 Vegas Valley Dr). Opened in '73 as The Rib Cage, and also known as Penthouse '77, Keyboard Lounge '79 owned by Harry Wham, and the Smuggle Inn from the '80s-2010s when the bar also sold cocaine. Red Dwarf took over in the 2020s.

70s: Double Down Saloon (4640 Paradise Rd). There was a bar here called John John’s Cocktail Lounge here in '74, then it was called Dreamworld which might have been a disco. For many years in between it was a restaurant rather than a bar. Double Down opened in ’92.

80s: Sand Dollar Lounge (3355 Spring Mountain Rd). Similar to Hard Hat, Sand Dollar's motto “Est. ‘76” may refer to the building itself. Sand Dollar Lounge opened in ‘83 and there was no bar, lounge, or music venue at this location prior to Sand Dollar.

90s: The Hideaway Tavern (3369 Thom Blvd). Their motto is “Friendliest bar in town since '62,” however Hideaway opened in a new building in the 90s. The '62 date refers to the property history. In '63 (not '62) a building was relocated here from downtown’s “old ranch” aka the Old Mormon Fort State Park. The building that was moved from the old ranch was a 50s-era structure for a restaurant connected to the ranch house. At 3369 Thom Blvd the building was repurposed by Larry LaPenta as into Lorenzo’s dinner club, later know as Old Ranch House Supper Club, and Larry’s Old Ranch House. It was demolished in the 90s, and replaced by a new building which opened as Larry’s Hideaway. After a change of ownership it became The Hideaway Tavern. The changes to the structures can be seen in USGS aerial photos, and Clark County Assessor dates The Hideaway Tavern to '93.

Rewatching the movie yesterday and Tashi's injury happened on March 2 2007,what makes me think about the movie's time line. Us junior open finals took place in real life on 10 Sep 2006. So we can say Tashi and Patrick were together between 5 and 6 months.

Art and Tashi met again 3 years later in Cincinnati,I think it was 2010,that took place from August 7 to 22 of 2010. They were engaged in Atlanta 2011,that took place on 18-24 july of 2011,they were engaged not even a year later.

Interesting Atlanta was also the tournament Art lost in the beginning of the movie against teenager Du Marier,the tournament was on 20-28 July of 2019, Art lost in the first round. Tashi decided to skipp Cincinnati where they reconnected because Art wasn't at a good level to play there,so she decided to go to a Challenger in New Rochelle.

This would be movie's timeline because I think in the screenplay timeline makes less sense. Tashi,Art and Patrick met in 2006 too but Rochelle happened 15 years after not 13 ,that would mean 2021,pandemic,maybe that is why it was changed. But there Art and Tashi were engaged 10 years ago,that would be 2011 too ,but Art and Tashi met again in Cincinnati when he was 20,so it was what 2008??,so they were longer together before being engaged,but that also would mean just 2 years since they met until they reconnected,did they even graduate from Stanford? Interesting Art said in the screenplay he waited 5 years to be with Tashi,it doesn't make sense or he was exagerating because that would mean 2011 when they were already engaged.

JPMorgan Settles Jeffrey Epstein Case For $75 Million, Avoiding Trial by Tyler Durden - Tuesday, Sep 26, 2023 - 11:25 AM

JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay the US Virgin Islands (USVI) a scant $75 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the bank knowingly aided Jeffrey Epstein's underage sex-trafficking operation, ending a legal battle that exposed all sorts of embarrassing ties between the bank and the dead pedophile.

The settlement was reached one month before the sides were scheduled to go to trial in Manhattan, where the USVI sought $190 million from the bank.

JPMorgan admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement.

Earlier this month we learned that JPMorgan flagged over $1 billion in suspicious transactions linked to Epstein, which they claimed to have reported to the US government, according to a filing by the USVI.

"JPMorgan was a full-service bank for Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking," said Mimi Liu, an attorney for the USVI, which said that the enormous sum bolsters key allegations in their legal action against the bank. According to the lawsuit, JPMorgan knowingly benefited from Epstein's wrongdoing, Bloomberg reports, noting that this is the first time in the case that the 'sheer volume of Epstein's financial activity at JPMorgan over a 16-year period has been disclosed.'

The suspicious activity was detailed in a 2019 filing to the US Department of Treasury, according to the lawsuit. The report was made after Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell a month after his arrest on sex trafficking charges. Epstein had been with the bank from the late 1990s through 2013, when they finally cut ties with him.

Epstein notoriously trafficked some of his victims to a private island in the USVI.

JPMorgan denies that it let Epstein's activities slide, and says it reported around 150 cash transactions to a federal regulator between 2002 and 2013.

Last month, the USVI told the judge in the case that the bank facilitated over $1.1 million in payments from Jeffrey Epstein to "girls or women," many of whom had Eastern European surnames.

Over $320,000 of the payments were made to "numerous individuals for whom JPMorgan had no previously identified payments," according to USVI attorney, Linda Singer, who accused the bank of failing to disclose the payments until after the end of discovery - the period in which parties in a lawsuit exchange evidence.

The bank claimed that's irrelevant, because the USVI doesn't have legal standing to claim JPMorgan obstructed a trafficking investigation because it wasn't a victim.

"The only reason that JPMorgan after 16 years reported the $1 billion in suspicious transactions was because he was arrested and then he was dead," singer added.

In June, former PMorgan Chase executive Jes Staley threw CEO Jamie Dimon under the bus over the bank's relationship with Epstein - claiming in legal documents that he and Dimon communicated about the convicted sex offender.

Epstein died in jail following his 2019 arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges. The pedophile, who became a JPMorgan client around 1998 - bringing the bank hundreds of millions of dollars, formed a close bond with Staley, who eventually oversaw JPMorgan's investment bank.

According to the filing, Staley says that he and Dimon communicated when Epstein was arrested in 2006 and 2008 when Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting and procuring a minor for prostitution, and served 13 months in a work-release program. Staley also claims that Dimon communicated with him several times through 2012 about whether to maintain Epstein as a client.

In one July 2010 email exchange between Staley and Epstein, Staley discussed 'Disney princesses' with Epstein.

"That was fun," Staley allegedly wrote to Epstein. "Say hi to Snow White."

To which Epstein replied: "[W]hat character would you like next?"

"Beauty and the Beast."

Epstein also emailed Staley photos of young women in seductive poses, the filing continued, with the USVI alleging that the exchange referred to young women and girls procured by Epstein.

Staley, according to the filing, "visited Epstein’s properties in the Virgin Islands and elsewhere," and "exchanged hundreds of messages with Epstein from his JPMorgan email account in full view of JPMorgan, including some with photos of young women, discussed Epstein’s provision of services to him during his travel on dates that closely corresponded with Epstein’s payments to the same young woman from his JPMorgan accounts, and discussed young women or girls procured by Epstein using the names of Disney princesses."

Epstein and Staley exchanged more than 1,200 emails over several years. Staley - who left JPMorgan to become CEO of Barclays two years later, stepped down from the latter in 2021 following a UK Financial Conduct Authority probe into his relationship with the pedophile financier.

Historic photos of Bob Taylor's Ranch House Supper Club ("oldest restaurant in Las Vegas") are elusive, but Bob Taylor also opened Las Vegas Gun Club on the ranch. In the early 60s it was being used as Thunderbird Gun Club which appeared briefly in Viva Las Vegas.

Bob & Ila Taylor owned the 80-acre ranch, the southern neighbor to the larger Gilcrease ranch of lower Tule Springs. The Taylors and Leo & Ruth Gonzales opened the Ranch House Supper Club in '55. Bob Taylor sold the ranch in Sep. '80 and died in 2010, but subsequent owners continued the restaurant in his name.

In the mid 80s the restaurant began a campaign of regular local advertising under the name Bob Taylor's Original Ranch House Supper Club. They were by this time designated with the street address 6250 Rio Vista St, and by the 90s, marketing the restaurant as a "steakhouse."

The northern line of the ranch was used for the 215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway, and much of the rest was developed into single family homes in the 2000s. The remaining ranch today is 7.5 acres; the restaurant is going on 70 years.
