All my grief says the same thing: this isn't how it's supposed to be. This isn't how it's supposed to be. And the world laughs. Holds my hope by the throat. Says: but this is how it is. -Fortesa Latifi
a / n : heavy post-breakup angst. Forgive all the Texas talk. This is what it was when I wrote it a year ago without the SKZ affiliation, and it's too interwoven with the story now to just find>replace with Seoul or something. It is what it is, sorry.
Maven rolled out of bed the next morning with excitement and dread in conflict in her soul. She and Seungmin were to be deployed in three hours to Houston, where they would be working in extremely close quarters for the foreseeable future. Her first assignment as a VALOR Special Agent, and she would be working with her first love.
She had missed him. She'd missed him so much that she'd spent six months of her life trapped in an endless roller coaster of grief and rage. It had consumed her entirely and had spat her out broken.
Mornings without the will to get out of bed.
Meals without the stomach to eat.
Days without the energy to shower.
Nights of having to sleep with the TV on because in a dark room with only her thoughts, she'd cry until morning.
Weeks of nothing but training and working because even a moment in silence would eat her alive.
Months of cursing and weeping his name, incapacitated by the destruction of a happiness she'd only known with him, shattered by the theft of the future he'd stolen from her.
Maven stared at herself in the mirror, letting her frothy toothbrush hang out of her mouth. Finally, after a year of torment, she could see him again, and he was just as beautiful as the day he'd left her. His voice was the same and his walk was the same and his eyes were the same and his smile was the same and he smelled the same.
It was like no time had passed.
Except that it had, and it had changed everything.
Standing on the deck of the Vesper, Maven found herself buffeted by salty winds, the taste of the ocean on her lips. Agents and officers rushed around her, preparing their bird for flight. The trip to Houston would take two hours, during which time she hoped she could sleep and avoid contact with her new partner.
"Agent Spanaway," The deep, gravelly voice of Lieutenant Seo reached her over the roar of engines.
The newly minted Special Agent looked to her left and found him standing there, sea bag in hand. "Lieutenant Seo. Good morning."
"Congratulations on completing your final exams. Captain Lee asked me to extend the perfunctory hope for your success as special agent. Best of luck in your achievements." He didn't need to add the 'perfunctory' comment. The well-built officer gestured to the plane in front of them. "They're ready for us to board. Is Agent Kim here yet?"
Before Maven could answer or respond to his awkward address, a figure strode past, glancing back languidly. "I'm here," Seungmin tossed his own sea bag into the plane and climbed inside. "Let's get this show on the road."
Lieutenant Seo nodded to Maven. "Go ahead. I'll be there shortly." He turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Maven to follow Seungmin and clamber up after him.
He was already seated and buckled in, his bag on the floor by his feet. Zipping his jacket up to his chin, he met her eyes and nodded with a smile. "Good morning, Maven." His eyes followed her movements, a smile playing at his lips.
She dropped her bag by her chair and took her seat. "Good morning." Hoping he wouldn't speak again, she rested her head back and closed her eyes. All she had to do was do the job. She had to complete their assignment and be professional and not let her old feelings catch up to her.
A small laugh sounded. "Back to Texas, huh? Just like old times." Seungmin commented.
Texas. His home state. Back to Texas with him.
Irritation climbed Maven's throat. Whatever you do, don't assault your first partner. "I guess so." She didn't open her eyes, praying he'd take the hint. She had no idea what she'd do if he pushed her. She could picture herself screaming at him, pummeling him with her fists, yelling every obscenity she could think of into his aggravating expression of nonchalance.
Lieutenant Seo joined them, closing up the plane and finding his seat. "And we're off."
"Welcome to Houston. This safehouse will be your base of operations for the duration of Almost Summer. If you'll follow me?" The slender special agent who met them on the tarmac introduced himself as Agent Hwang. He led them from the plane into a small office building in the Houston suburbs, which was a safehouse known to VALOR agents as University Station.
The lobby and first few floors were staffed by employees who kept up the cover that the building was a private insurance company. Anyone who stumbled in off the street would have found themselves in a busy office full of dissatisfied and unfulfilled 9-to-5ers.
Agent Hwang took them downstairs. "We mostly keep analysts and surveillance officers here, so the two of you might feel somewhat conspicuous. We've been waiting for the Vesper to dispatch a recon team for a couple of weeks now."
Below ground level, dozens of VALOR agents filled a bullpen of computer terminals. The room was loud and filled with conversation. The sense of camaraderie indicated clearly that the safehouse was a long-term post for most of the agents stationed there.
Maven watched them work, moving about the room, tapping each other for collaboration. She'd been an intelligence analyst six months before, and the thought of going back to that stage of her life turned her stomach. Shooting a look at Seungmin, she found her heart sinking.
Somehow she got the feeling that she was closer to that stage of her life than she knew.
Agent Hwang took them down another floor. "This is residential and kitchens. We have space for the two of you—" he gestured to Maven and Seungmin. "—down in the specialists wing. Unfortunately, you are the only specialists stationed here currently, so you have the hall to yourselves. And you, Lieutenant Seo, have a designated room in the officers' wing." He took them to the specialists' wing first, giving Maven and Seungmin their keys and allowing them to drop off their bags in their rooms.
He left them there and took Lieutenant Seo to the officers' wing.
Maven dropped her sea bag on her new bed, taking in her new room. It was twice as big as the one on the Vesper. The walls were a horrible yellow, like it was the only color that was in bulk on the clearance shelf when they were building the safehouse. There was one twin bed wedged against the wall on one side of the room, and a heavy brown desk on the other side. A small closet and a bathroom took up the wall between her room and Seungmin's.
Everything was so dark.
Being underground meant no daylight, no windows.
The ceiling light was depressingly dim and left shadows in every corner.
Maven sank down on her bed, feeling an uncomfortable resemblance to the cot-like mattress from her college days. In the silence that followed, she could hear Seungmin moving around in the next room.
They shared a bathroom.
Images of his dirty clothes in the bathroom floor, cups strewn about his furniture, clean clothes draped over his dresser came back to mind. Frustrated, Maven shook her head and forced the thoughts away.
A chill ran down her arms at the hollow loneliness of the empty room.
As an ache formed in her chest, her eyes flashed to the bathroom door again. The only person who'd ever made her feel like she wasn't lonely was just beyond, and there she sat, feeling forsaken.
He was also the person who made her feel the loneliest she'd ever been.
A L M O S T     S U M M E R
"This is the Armory. As you'll be using weapons and technology augmented from alien tech, we require weekly inspections of the equipment. You'll bring it down here and let an agent inspect the gear every single week." Agent Hwang pushed open a door on sub level four marked 'ARMORY'.
A young man approached as soon as Agent Hwang entered, wearing a blue lab coat and latex gloves. "Agent Hwang, good afternoon."
The officer nodded to him and then gestured back to Maven and Seungmin. "Agents Spanaway and Kim, this is the tech assigned to your account Agent Lee."
Agent Lee peeled off his gloves and shook both their hands. "You can call me Felix."
Maven didn't miss the way his rich brown eyes lingered on her for a second. She took his attention as an invitation to size him up, and let her gaze take in his messy blonde hair that tended to fall over his eyes at certain angles, the breadth of his shoulders, and warmth of his hand around hers.
Deciding she liked the look of him, Maven didn't mind the way he looked at her.
"As I said, you'll be bringing your equipment to Agent Lee once a week for mandatory inspection. Be sure you keep you gear cleaned and mission ready, and spare Felix the paperwork, sound good?" Agent Hwang smiled accommodatingly at Agent Lee and then bobbed his eyebrows at Seungmin. "He gets cranky when he has to write you guys up."
Seungmin raised his hands in mock surrender. "We'll be sure to keep our gear in ship shape."
The cheerful weapons tech grinned at Seungmin. "Much appreciated, Agent Kim. Too to be working with you, sir," his eyes slid to Maven again, slightly more warmly. "Ma'am,"
She tipped a mock salute and followed Agent Hwang out of the Armory.
"We have your gear here." Agent Hwang announced, leading the three newcomers into a conference room back on the first sublevel. "You'll be able to collect it and store it on sublevel four when you come and go from University Station." He gestured to the big oval table that stretched out before them. "Please, have a seat."
Maven pulled up a chair and sank into it as the senior agent turned on a monitor on the far wall. Lieutenant Seo and Seungmin followed suit, spacing themselves out around the table.
"This room is where you will plan your excursions and brief Lieutenant Seo and I as to the results of your investigations. Two floors down, on sublevel three, is a digital simulation room where you will be able to perform practice runs prior to these operations." Agent Hwang picked up a remote from the end of the table.
Maven let her eyes stray, flicking to where Seungmin sat across from her, leaning back in his chair with his legs spread comfortably. He was watching Hwang and the monitor, waiting restlessly for the real information to begin.
She remembered sitting next to him, his hand tangling with hers; their hands clasped in her lap; his lips on her forehead.
Shaking the memory away, Maven bit down a swell of emotion.
A treacherous part of her longed to find her seat next to Seungmin again.
She hated herself for it.
"This is all we have right now," Agent Hwang was saying, directing Maven's attention to the monitor. A map with colorful pinpoints and lines drawn in a circular shape illuminated the screen. "We've developed this as a graph for you—it shows the Nokken guard movements around the perimeter of the site. We haven't been able to get any closer."
The graph caption described the times of the guard rotations and the speed at which they moved from station to station.
"You'll be going in tomorrow and getting a lay of the land from the outside," Lieutenant Seo added. "Your job is to evaluate entrances to the site and security going in and out. Just watch. All day. Find out what kind of activity is normal, and what is permitted. Afterwards we'll debrief you here and devise an infiltration plan based on your information."
Seungmin was leaning forward, already eager to get started. He gave Lieutenant Seo a dutiful nod, looking wildly overconfident for someone who just found out that they'd be spending the next day laying in the dirt.
Their supervising officer turned to Maven. "This is your first task as a special agent, but it is not Agent Kim's. You will follow his lead and take his advice. Do you understand?"
Humbled and embarrassed, Maven nodded swiftly. "Yes sir."
Seungmin flashed her a smug grin.
Agent Hwang turned off the monitor. "The kitchens are fully stocked. Feel free to prepare your own meals and use what you need. Have a good night, agents."
Maven's dreams were filled with Seungmin.
Back then, when it was fresh, she had dreamed about him every night. It usually went one of two ways:
There were the nightmares; she'd dream that they were still together. That everything was normal. But every turn, every word he said, everything he did, she knew deep down was a lie; a precursor to him breaking up with her.
Then there were the good dreams; the good dreams that were so much worse than the nightmares. She would dream that he would come find her and beg her back. He would plead with her to take him back and she would forget all of her anger and pull him into her arms.
Maven hated those dreams. At least she could wake up from the nightmares and know that they had already come true.
That night, in Houston University Station, Maven's dreams were filled with them together. Back in the days when they walked hand in hand. When she lived with the confidence and joy of knowing she had the love of her life. Back when they would sit together and wrestle and tickle and tease until they ached from laughter.
She dreamed of his hands on her face, his lips on her cheeks. She grew warm with the dreams of him embracing her in the kitchen, spending every possible moment holding her in his arms.
She dreamed of their long talks and long walks, and the future they had planned together.
When morning broke and the memories faded, their cruel sting left tears in her eyes. He was a liar and a child and a coward.
He left her.
He abandoned her.
He had walked away like she meant nothing. Like they meant nothing.
Maven pushed the thin, scratchy blankets back and sat up in bed. She used to long for sleep and curse the ringing of her alarm. It used to be a chore to get out of bed in the mornings.
Ever since he left, her interests faded. She no longer cared about things that had mattered before he broke her. She no longer cared about giving herself sleep.
Getting out of bed was easy.
She no longer cared about giving herself food.
Starving was painless and food was unsatisfying.
She no longer cared about the things that used to entertain her; her TV shows, her movies, her social media, her books—all the life seeped out of them when he destroyed her.
Maven stepped into tactical pants and tugged on a shirt. She trudged through the motions, anger unfurling like wings in her chest.
Everything she did reminded her of the gaping hole in her soul that he'd left behind.
She fastened her belt and tied her shoes. He had loved her once.
She braided her hair and washed her face. They had been inseparable.
The rage inside her grew and grew until all she could feel was it's heat. He had lied and lied and then he had bolted.
Maven heard him knock on his side of the bathroom door. Watching herself brush her teeth, she made herself ignore sudden thoughts of tooth brush shivs and spat into the sink. "I'm done," she called, wiping her face. "All yours."
Seungmin entered the bathroom as she left, calling out a good morning.
Maven slammed the door shut behind her.

◔ ┈ LOADING … TRAINEE PROFILE INITIATED !
SEO BENNIE ( READ MORE HERE )
AGE 23 ( 1 JANUARY 1998 )
TRAINED FOR 3 YEARS ( SIGNED JANUARY 2018 )
INTRODUCTION VIDEO FOUND … PRESS PLAY ?
trying to decide what to actually do for his introduction video was a bit hard to do, to say the least. he couldn’t decide what exactly to do for, considering he had to show off only one talent, and he didn’t know if he should pick singing or dancing. but, thus, he had decided to go with singing because he thinks it’s more of a strong suit, with dancing coming right after that in his skill set. was it actually the truth? maybe it was, but what did he fully know? his trainers are aware of it, but he hoped that he was impressing them as he continued to build himself up in his own skill set as he trained. nonetheless, he got ready to show off his vocal skill within his introduction video.
his eyes are glossed over in a certain way, just to play up the emotion of the song that he’s deciding to sing. he starts to sing whitney houston’s version of i will always love you. it made sense, to say the least, the best song to show off his range, his skill set. he just hoped that he was able to impress whoever was watching his intro video with this cover of his. it wasn’t that long of a cover, but he was being sure to hit all the points, the notes that he could given in his allotted time. a emotion of sadness and despair can seemingly be seen upon his face, within his eyes, just for that added performance bonus. once he reaches the end of his time, he’s sure to hit a high note that he holds for the last few seconds. once completed, he smiles softly, coming out of a performance mode of sorts.
he bows to the camera at a full degree. “hello! i’m bennie, i’m twenty-three and i’m a third year trainee from nashville!” he greets, allowing himself to smile a bit more, just to play up the camera. “if i get to debut… i’d like to be a main vocalist and have a dancing position of some sort. vocals and dance are my two first loves, that i want to continue on with.” he explains. “i’d also like to be in a boy group! i also think i’d be good as leader!” he chuckled, head shaking a bit.
“i will work hard, so please root for me!” he finishes the video off with those words, before bowing at a full degree once more, and coming back up before waving with both of his hands.

Support Acquired: Houston Outlaws Adds Former Los Angeles Gladiators Flex for 2023
Tumblr media
One day into the 2023 Overwatch League free agent signing period, the person in charge of the company credit card at the Houston Outlaws' headquarters is probably starting to feel the pressure. The squad is obviously using all that prize money to build an even more competitive roster for the upcoming season after finishing third in the 2022 season. Much of the 2022 Houston roster was dismantled despite the team’s high placement in the final season standings. As of Dec. 23, the Outlaws’ roster consists of Fearless, Shu, and star DPS Oh “Pelican” Se-hyun. With half a dozen awards and titles between them, that’s a scary start to a roster.
