Despite my deep affection for Sensible Soccer, I hesitated to upload this installment. Beyond the shared title and the nostalgic "Goal Scoring Superstar Hero" track, Sensible Soccer 2006 diverges significantly from the original game, particularly in terms of gameplay. It's not that the game is inherently bad, especially if you approach it without expecting a soccer simulation. However, in my sincere opinion, it falls short of deserving the same name as one of the greatest video games of all time.
My critique is not rooted in the failure to revive the classic gameplay or the perceived lack of efforts to modernize it. Even the comically oversized player heads you see in the cutscenes - which I actually find amusing - are not the issue. Rather, Sensible Soccer 2006 presents itself as a different game marred by notable flaws and an ostensibly useless new feature that only amplify frustration and undermine its longevity.
One major flaw lies in the shooting system, which seems to have gone awry during development. Despite numerous attempts, mastery remains elusive. The game, while relatively easy, introduces an oddity where, even in one-on-one situations against the goalkeeper, a straightforward shot often inexplicably veers off target or goes wide. This inherent flaw hampers the game's scoring potential and leads to moments of undeserved disappointment.
The fouling system is another sore point. While I acknowledge the game's departure from soccer simulation aspirations, the random bookings and foul-giving feel outdated for a 2006 release. Inconsistencies abound, with identical fouls by different players resulting in disparate outcomes. The arbitrary nature of the system, where clear fouls often go unpunished, disrupts the flow of the game and can be infuriating.
Adding to the list of issues is the introduction of the seemingly unnecessary sprint feature. Despite its inclusion in a 2006 context, the sprint button proves more of a hindrance than an asset. Utilizing it often results in immediate pursuit and tackles by opponents, undermining the potential benefits. Paradoxically, maintaining a normal pace allows for a more composed and strategic approach, fostering better chances for goal-scoring opportunities.
In conclusion, despite these drawbacks, I did find the game enjoyable. However, the mounting frustration during gameplay made me eagerly anticipate the end of each session. Were it not for these shortcomings, Sensible Soccer 2006 could have been a commendable homage to a legendary title. Instead, it falls short, leaving me to appreciate it as a flawed but entertaining diversion, overshadowed by the legacy of its iconic predecessor.

my brain is fried i'm so overtired I've cried spontaneously at least once a day for the past three days will you please help a girl out with a soft cozy wholesome movie recc please and thank you
I’m so sorry my dear!! I dug to the depths of a bunch of old tag games and my film tag and this is what I came up with!
when I’m strung out I tend to gravitate to movies that will make me happy-cry so this list will at moments tend in that direction. I tried to sort by what was available to stream now, and the sub-lists are in no particular order
if you have amazon prime (the basic package):
Penelope (2006). highly recommend, a funny little modern fairy tale about a lonely young girl searching for a way to break her curse. this one heals something in my heart
Stardust. also highly recommend! a chaotic fairy tale about true love and what a person would do for it.
Street Gang. the Sesame Street documentary. sometimes people are good and they’re trying to make the world a better place and they’re doing it with their friends.
How To Train Your Dragon. it’s a perfectly executed film and the score and animation is gorgeous. (also available on netflix)
if you have netflix:
Feel the Beat. a dance flick about a seemingly cold-hearted ambitious young woman becoming a dance teacher in her hometown
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. so so so rewatchable.
She’s the Man. the funniest movie on this list and possibly of all time. I have never shown this movie to a person who didn’t end up loving it. it’s Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at boarding school as a soccer movie
if you have tubi?? you might not need a membership I don’t know how tubi works??
The Music Man. some of the best costumes and choreography my favorite age of movie musicals had to offer. a con man comes to a small Iowa town and starts to want to believe in the beautiful lie he’s selling.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. this movie was written by Roald Dahl and it is buck wild. widowed inventor and his two children buy a broken down racing car and?? hijinks and musical numbers ensue
if you have disney plus:
Princess Diaries (1&2). we know them, we love them.
Sky High. if you haven’t seen this, I highly recommend it because it is silly fun but it understands the genre it’s playing with.
Newsies (1992). scrappy newsboys form a union, sing songs, punch each other, ???, profit
Holes. the single best adapted book to film ever? the cast commentary is also hilarious
Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella (1997). absolutely delightful. Whitney Houston as the godmother! Jason Alexander as the butler! Brandy as Cinderella! Bernadette Peters as the stepmother!
if you feel up for a trip to the library, things to look for:
The Hundred Foot Journey. I only saw this one once but it’s about a family who opens up an Indian restaurant across from a Michelin-starred French restaurant and it’s gorgeous
A League of Their Own (1992). sisters! best friends! married women and their disreputable drunk coach friends!
The Secret Garden (1993). highly recommend! this one fixes me down to my bones.
This Beautiful Fantastic. also highly recommend! a woman who’s afraid of the world falls in love with it.
Secondhand Lions. also highly recommend!! a boy gets dropped off with his great-uncles for the summer, hears possibly made-up stories of their wild and adventurous youth
August Rush. a young musical prodigy searches for his parents.
Sense and Sensibility (1995). if you need Austen energy, this is the one.
Cinderella (2015). this movie is so gentle and so lovely.
Little Women (1994). life is gonna be hard and sad but it’s gonna be beautiful and the love will endure!!!
I hope this helps and I hope you feel better! ❤️❤️

ITP September Awareness Campaign
The 2023 Global ITP September Awareness Campaign is upon us . Here’s  why it is so important and why we should all make an effort to get involved.
Please check the ITP Support Association website at www.itpsupport.org.uk and www.globalitp.org for further details of how to take part.
WHY IS ITP SEPTEMBER AWARENESS  IMPORTANT ?
One of the main lessons that I have taken from my ITP journey is that we all need to make more people aware of this very little known, enigmatic illness. Like most ITP sufferers, before I was diagnosed with it, I had never heard of it and frankly I really couldn’t believe that I had it.
After my diagnosis , I just couldn’t believe that I had anything as serious as ITP. I thought that the hospital had made a mistake. Maybe they had confused my blood test results with somebody else. Once it became clear that I really did have ITP, then I got angry.
Why me, how can I have ITP ? I had never been ill before, never smoked, never taken any drugs and always drank alcohol at sensible levels. I had lived my first 46 years without ever being in a hospital for anything other than a few stitches from football/soccer related injuries.
Well, so what ? ITP does not care much about who it chooses and when. Unfortunately it can develop in anyone at anytime at any age and of any ethnicity, although we do know that it occurs more in women than men. In short, ITP is not terribly fussy, it can choose anyone, we are all fair game.
In adults it is usually more stubborn than in children. It tends to disappear (often without treatment) in many children, as suddenly as it turns up. In adults it is rarer to see it go into spontaneous remission. But it doesn’t mean that we cannot live very full and positive lives.
SPREADING AWARENESS  GETS RESULTS
There are certainly plenty of grounds for optimism and it is clear that our ITP Awareness campaigns have borne fruit. When the annual September campaign started back in 2010 things on the purple front were very, very different.
When I think back to 2006 and my diagnosis there were far fewer treatments available for ITP (For example - TPO drugs had not been rolled out) very few support groups, and certainly very limited numbers of blogs, social media groups, vlogs, let alone research on the scale we have now.
It is worth remembering that until the TPO drugs were introduced the only treatments available for ITP WERE NOT actually designed to treat ITP. All of those options were actually borrowed from other illness/conditions and were not specifically designed to treat ITP at all. Now we have the TPO drugs which have been specifically developed for the treatment of our condition.
So things have improved dramatically and as evidence of this I would urge anyone living with ITP to watch the many video films on the ITP Support Association You Tube Channel which explain the many treatment options now available to us.
The whole approach to ITP is so much more positive, more patient focused and inclusive. It is just so much more optimistic and encouraging.
Making an effort to spread awareness has undoubtedly played a big part in moving research, treatments & knowledge further forward.
There is no better reason to get involved this September than knowing any contribution we make is improving things for us living with ITP now, and helping those who may follow in our footsteps in years ahead.
However, we cannot be complacent, it is up to us to keep making others aware of our condition. We know what it is like to live with it day to day and it is we who can tell others what to expect. If we don’t inform people, then who will ?
So please do help in this September Awareness campaign, try to get involved even if it is to take just one or two small actions.
September awareness week runs from the 25th to the 29th.

The greatest query coming into this video game is UVA quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who overlooked ultimate week’s 28-three loss in opposition t Notre Dame with a rib damage. When Armstrong performs, Virginia boasts one of the vital precise offenses in the country. If Armstrong can not play, there's little chance that the Cavaliers should be able to retain the scoring pace of Kenny Pickett and the Pittsburgh offense. Prediction: Virginia 38, Pittsburgh 42 Saturday, 4pm: Syracuse (5-5, 2-4 ACC) at No. 20 NC State (7-three, four-2 ACC), ACC network Preview: regardless of losing to Wake woodland remaining week, NC State continues a very small chance of profitable the Atlantic. The Wolfpack need to beat Syracuse and North Carolina and they'd need Wake wooded area to lose each of its remaining ACC video games. In that scenario, there would be a 3-way tie for the Atlantic Division between Clemson, Wake forest, and NC State, with the Wolfpack winning the tiebreaker as a result of their division record. meanwhile, Syracuse needs to beat both No. 20 NC State on the road or No. 18 Pittsburgh at domestic within the common season finale so as to turn into bowl eligible. Prediction: Syracuse 20, NC State 31 Saturday, 7:30pm: Virginia Tech (5-5, three-three ACC) at Miami (5-5, three-3 ACC), ACC network Preview: Virginia Tech and Miami both enter this week with a .500 listing overall and in ACC play and needing only one win to clinch bowl eligibility. each the Hokies and the Hurricanes are additionally in exciting coaching situations. Virginia Tech simply parted methods with Justin Fuente after six seasons and Manny Diaz is regarded to be on the perimeter of the sizzling seat in Miami. Prediction: Virginia Tech 24, Miami 30 먹튀검증

Weekend Top Ten #488
Top Ten Sport Games
Woohoo! Sport! I love sport, don’t you? All kinds of sports. Remember when Hank McSport scored more sports points than Johnny Sportson? Or when that sport team beat that other team? With the goals? And the scores? Phew. Sport.
There’s a lot of focus on sports of all kinds at the moment. Well, at least two kinds. Maybe more. Are there more than two sports? Probably. If they can have eight different Spider-people in Into the Spider-Verse they probably have quite a few sports. I mean, I don’t really follow many of them. Or any of them, to be fair. I’m not a sporty person, let’s say. But it’s in the air at the moment, isn’t it? You can feel it wherever you look. Mostly because of the red crosses dangling out of everyone’s windows, and the fact that there is only one song anymore. Normally this sort of thing would inspire little more than a tut from me, but even I – yes, even I – am momentarily caught up in something approaching nationalistic fervour.
Which is to say, I’ve been quite enjoying the football and the tennis.
Anyway, I’ve been sufficiently inspired by England getting into a semi-final at bloody last to dedicate this weekend’s Top Ten to all matters sporty. However, because anything that happens in real life is rubbish, I’m turning my attention to videogame representations of sports. Why? Well, because there aren’t enough fictional sports in the MCU or Star Wars (or maybe there are; maybe I’ll save that one for the World Cup or something). So, quite simply, we have a list of my favourite ever sports games. You will see that I remain iconoclastic, and I think the list will also connote my large disinterest in real-life sports by mostly featuring arcade-style representations, rather than earnest simulations. This is because I’ve rarely been bothered if real people or locations feature in my sports games, as long as playing them is good fun. And these ten games are all good fun.
Now, what is a sport without an arbitrary set of rules? Well, the same goes for my Top Tens! So for a start I’ve ruled out racing games. Whilst there are genuine racing sports, I feel like videogames have “racing” as a separate category. And I pretty much only like Mario Kart and Forza anyway. Also I did racing as its own Top Ten six years ago. I’ve also discounted martial arts, because I think fighting games are their own thing. I know there’s a big difference between realistic martial arts and Sub-Zero ripping someone’s spine out; but even so, I think “fighting sims” probably fit into that genre more than not. Sorry, IK+. Where I did have to pause was regarding things like snowboarding, skateboarding, etc; are they races or not? The decision I came to was whether the goal was being first/fastest across a line, or accruing points. So some games have gotten in here because really you’re performing stunts or tricks in order to score, and that makes it a “sport” and not a “race”, so to speak. Some of these I looked at on a case-by-case basis, like a referee consulting VAR.
See, I just made a football reference.
Anyway, here are ten games that I like. And for a change, I’ve actually started including franchises rather than individual entries (sometimes), as I think sports games are often regular if not annual and differences between entries can be incremental.
Tumblr media
Sensible World of Soccer (Sensible Software, 1994): there could be only one. As an arcade representation of football, it’s unsurpassed. But what keeps me coming back is the customisation and the depth of the game; whether it’s managing a team from minnow to megalith, or whether it’s creating entire leagues of custom teams, it’s an entire fantasy footballing world in glorious miniature. The only drawback is the thirty-year-old UI which isn’t as helpful as a modern game’s.
Wii Sports (Nintendo, 2006): never has a collection of sport-based minigames been so approachable. Absolutely, unquestionably the most fun multiplayer experience I’ve ever had, and the best Wii game by a mile – and this is a console with two Mario Galaxy games. I can’t explain it, but the sheer simple delight – and relative precision – of the motion controls, combined with the quirky Miis, result in something that I wanted to return to again and again, even on my own, bettering my previous scores (and those of my family). Still responsible for my brother’s greatest ever sulk when our dad beat him at bowling. And, for the record, my favourite of the games is Golf.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (Neversoft, etc, from 1999): ah, franchises! I’m not sure how many entrants I played, or which is the best, but it’s probably part 2. I’ve never fancied a skateboard or being part of skater culture particularly – looks too hard on the knees – but these games make it seem simultaneously huge fun and also insanely dangerous. Complex stunt routines are easy to attempt and difficult to master, and the graphics at the time were considered really good, with a great sense of speed that made the inevitable bails and crashes all the more wince-inducing.
Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding (Indie Built, 2001): of a similar strain to Tony Hawk, Amped is all about perform life-threatening stunts whilst simultaneously travelling at ludicrous speeds whilst riding a plank of wood. Amped also throws you down an actual mountain for good measure, leveraging the then-phenomenal power of the original Xbox to represent entire slopes from top to bottom, with dozens of other nutters flinging themselves off with gay abandon, and snow that looked pristine and deformed realistically beneath your board. It was a heck of a good time and a tremendous launch title for the console. Hey, why can’t they bring it back?!
Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis (Rockstar Games, 2006): Rockstar, mostly known for hulking, propulsive games involving violence and swearing, surprised everyone with this earnest and rather deep simulation of table tennis, a sport everyone else is quite good at apart from me. The graphics at the time were outstanding, with supremely detailed players, but the mechanics of the game were tremendous too. It got a bit too hard for rubbish old me, but as a pixelated take on ping-pong, it’s pristine.
Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (The Bitmap Brothers, 1990): I ummed and ahhed about this, because I wasn’t sure if I should include fictional sports. I mean, if Speedball, why not Rocket League, y’know? But in the end I relented because although the sport itself is fictional, the representation here is dense and sim-like. You manage your team through the leagues, dealing with injuries and recruiting players, and the game itself is intense and physical, and every aspect just makes it feel like a real sport, despite the fact you’re pummelling heads as well as chucking a ball. The artwork by Daniel Malone is incredible, too, and is so iconic it’s become for me representative of an entire era of gaming.
Behold the Kickmen (Size Five Games, 2017): it may not have the precision of Sensi, but other than that it’s a totally faithful and accurate depiction of the sport. Right? Dan Marhsall’s disdainful, satiric, frequently hilarious pastiche of football – not just videogames, but the sport itself – is still a playful joy, and the cod-RPG element of one lone “kickman” and his journey, is a nice touch. A fun, daft arcade game, but even better as a piece of piss-takery.
Kinect Sports (Rare, 2010): if Wii Sports is the pinnacle of stripped-down sports as a party game, then Kinect Sports is a close runner-up, and arguably the best-ever implementation of Microsoft’s much-maligned sinister camera. Let’s not forget, even if it spectacularly failed to live up to the unrealistic expectations set by its reveal, and even if it became an albatross that hobbled Xbox for the better part of a generation, the Kinect peripheral was not only a huge success at launch, but actually really good for what it was, and here Rare exploits its features with gusto, delivering some genuinely fun and engaging activities. The addition of online fluff, such as posting embarrassing photos taken by the camera, is a minor joy too, and I’ll always remember it as the game that made my dad create an Xbox account.
Descenders (RageSquid, 2018): again, I went back and forth, as this is a game which features you riding a vehicle along a track. But at the end of the day it’s not speed you’re chasing but points, and I feel pretty strongly that Descenders is a stunt game, with you racking up the score for doing all kinds of crazy and inappropriate stuff on an airborne bicycle. The controls are precise and the action fairly rollicking, like the best of these games, and the procedurally generated levels ensure variety. I think for true classic status all it needs is some over-the-top ragdoll physics when you crash your bike; I wanna see riders cartwheeling through the air, joints akimbo.
Microsoft Golf (Microsoft, from 1992): okay, so this one is personal – although all my lists are personal really. When we got our first PC, which I want to say was Christmas 1995, the only real game I remember it coming with – aside from your FreeCell and your Ski Free and all that – was Microsoft Golf, which I think was the 1993 “Multimedia Edition” (it came on a CD-ROM, can you believe it?!). And I loved the game; I kept going back to it, even though I have zero interest in golf as a sport, outside of really liking the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup. I think this is the game that introduced me to the normal golf-game style of timing your button presses to control the power of your swing, and I’d play it all the time with my cousins, possibly because it was a fairly quiet turn-based game, and local multiplayer was actually quite rare on the PC in those days. I’ve never really played a big, serious golf game since then – I think I briefly had one on the 360 – but the appeal of golf as a videogame sport has remained, and I’ve had a lot of fun over the years with the likes of Powerstar Golf on the Xbox One, or more casual things such as Golf With Your Friends. And, of course, I love the golf in Wii and Kinect Sports. In fact, the game I most want to play at the moment is Mario Golf on the Switch…
Ha! I did it! A whole list and no FIFA. Sadly also no Kick-Off, but then, it was utterly destroyed for all time by Sensi, so what can you do*? And speaking of football games, I do have fond memories of the (I think) PES game for the N64 that my brother and I turned into a melee by constantly slide-tackling the keeper as soon as he picked up the ball. I wish that’d happen more often in real football; maybe then I wouldn’t wait years in between paying attention.
Oh, and come on, England!
*this is a very deep-cut, old-school reference to the intense and serious rivalry between Kick-Off fans and Sensible Soccer fans on the Amiga, and also to the fact than Dino Dini – the creator of Kick-Off – still seems incredibly upset by Sensi laying waste to his game, even thirty years later when all anybody plays is FIFA. Cheer up, Dino!

ITP September Awareness Campaign
The 2021 ITP September Awareness Campaign is here again so here’s why it is so important and why we should all make an effort to get involved.
Please check the ITP Support Association website at www.itpsupport.org.uk and www.globalitp.org for further details of how to take part.
WHY IS SEPTEMBER AWARENESS MONTH IMPORTANT ?
One of the main lessons that I have taken from my ITP journey is that we all need to make more people aware of this very little known, enigmatic illness. Like most ITP sufferers, before I was diagnosed with it, I had never heard of it and frankly I really couldn't believe that I had it.
I had been experiencing ITP related symptoms for at least a year before I even went to the doctor to get checked out. These symptoms were mysterious, unprovoked , random bruising and terrible bouts of tiredness. I wish that I had recognised these symptoms earlier and got them checked. This is why we need to make other people aware of what to look out for.
After my diagnosis of ITP, I just couldn't really believe that I had anything as serious as that.
ITP is manageable in most cases and not as threatening as many other conditions.
SPREADING AWARENESS ACTUALLY GETS RESULTS
There are certainly plenty of grounds for optimism and it is clear that our ITP Awareness campaigns have borne fruit. When the annual September campaign started back in 2010 things on the purple front were very, very different.
In fact when I think back to 2006 and my diagnosis there were far fewer treatments available for ITP (For example - TPO drugs had not been rolled out) very few support groups, and certainly very limited numbers of things like blogs, social media groups, vlogs, let alone research on the scale we have now.
Other new drugs in development and hopefully coming soon are also specifically designed for the treatment of ITP.
So things have improved dramatically and as evidence of this I would urge anyone living with ITP to watch two video films on the ITP Support Association You Tube Channel which explain the many treatment options now available to us.
The links are set out below and I am encouraged myself when I watch them to know how many more treatment options we now have compared to when I started out, as a wet behind the purple ears person.
Link number 1 - Dr Drew Provan - What’s new in ITP Treatment -  https://youtu.be/lcC329pd-fY
Link number 2 - Professor Adrian Newland - The new ITP Guidelines - https://youtu.be/nd9FPx_hANM
If we don't inform people about ITP, then who will ?
So please do help in this September Awareness campaign, try to get involved even if it is to take just one or two small actions.
SIMPLE THINGS WE CAN ALL DO in the ITP September Awareness Campaign
Join us at the ITP Support Association in our September Awareness Online Event  (Full details will shortly be available via www.itpsupport.org.uk).
Engage with the daily social media postings that we will be making throughout September highlighting ITP. We will be using  the hashtags #ITPaware and #global4ITP
Retweet and/or LIKE any TWEETS we put out & in doing so this spreads visibility of the campaign
Try posting out a few TWEETS or Facebook messages yourself - here are a few that you may wish to use -
        A) ITP is a RARE DISEASE and is just one of over 6000 RARE DISEASES
        B)  ITP is an AUTOIMMUNE disease, of which there are over 80 including multiple sclerosis, pernicious anaemia, type 1 diabetes, Lupus & rheumatoid arthritis
        C)  About 5,000 people in the UK are living with ITP at any one time, the figure in the USA is between 60,000 & 100,000
         D)  In ITP the immune system mistakes platelets as being foreign & destroys them. It can follow a virus, vaccination or some medications, but often the cause is unknown.
         E) There is no cure for ITP but there are many treatments which are used to raise the platelet count.

Someone; *watches Yuri on ice exactly once* WOW I LOVE FIGURE SKATING!! DAMN THEY NAILED THAT *squinting at wikipedia article* TRIPLE TOE COMBO(?) WOW HE KILLED THAT *squinting at another wiki article* SHORT PROGRAM xD MAn IM SUCH AN EXPERT ON THIS SHIT. WONDER IF I COULD GO TO THE OLYMPICS???? Me, a figure skater; i want death.
Don’t die Anon! And no need to get randomly so doom and gloom over random strangers over the internet whether you happen to be on the giving or the receiving end.
Just keep enjoying your sport on your terms, other people will enjoy it on theirs. Also figure skating is a bit of a marvelously odd beast blending both athleticism and artistry/performance, ‘acting’ even. It’s perfectly fine to enjoy either or both according to one’s own individual sensibilities and analysis skills. I don’t go into technical because expression and emotion are more my jam and I lack skating experience (temp rinks and rented hockey skates. ‘nough said) to gauge the minute points of a move/jump and I struggle even when I try replaying frame by frame. At least axels are easy to spot at a glance XDD. But generally over a more ‘muscular’ program I’d be more impressed with a technically easier program that has overall better flow  and ‘acting’ the program’s story and that moves me ad entertains me. I tend to prefer former competitive skaters programs actually. Then we get stuff like Yuzuru’s Seimei hence the best of both worlds so yay.
On top of that genuine interest and even pro careers can be sparked in different ways and by different means. Anime included. Among today’s YOI fans there are tomorrow’s  champions (and past, and present too. Incidentally have you followed some of them top figure skaters’ social media posts about YOI since more than 1 year ago now? )
CASE IN POINT AND QUICK HISTORY LESSON FOLLOWS. There are many roads leading to Rome  as we say or more than one-way street journey to reach your destination.
1) OUAT in my country  (we’re talking nearly 40 years ago dear readers and I was there walking the Earth ) they used to broadcast a lot of sport anime series.  We are a soccer kind of country and basicaly everything else gets very little coverage by comparison, or none at all. I can vouch for at least two generations of soccer players, tennis players, volleyball players  gymnasts and golf players getting their spark and/or gained support thanks to those series. Back then those anime were a mass phenomenon and a childhood staple /bonding experience. Everyone watched them and many wished to try the sports of their fav heroes :D. Fun times. Winning times too.
2) Even if I hadn’t watched YOI about 8 times and in three languages already and it hadn’t brought me much joy and lovely acquaintances in a hard phase of my life I’m very grateful to YOI because it led me to find out official reliable channels at last! to keep updated on figure skating and skaters as I had always wished to do (and did to an extent on other platforms since circa 2004. Regular-ish internet access yay) As I mentioned above in point 1) coverage for many sports has always been sporadic where I live and spotty at best outside of soccer, cycling and Formula1 because we are the land of Ferrari cars and Coppi and Bartali/Giro D’Italia among others yadda yadda .
For years I  and many others unless we happened to live near an ice rink (hint: rare) or belong in a skating fans’ circle could only glimpse something about figure skating ( I admit I prefer singles’ skating over the couples or synchro also my free time and internet is limited alas) through news articles, the occasional piece about Carolina Kostner exploits (and failures)  or whethever we were blessed with some mainstream TV  broadcast - often recaps or quick puff pieces -  about again Kostner, or Deborah Compagnoni and Alberto Tomba & Co. for skiing, or the temporary bonanza of Turin Winter Olympics 2006 .
Thank heavens for fervent Youtube uploaders of  real life figure skating from ancient to basically real time video shares. And Rocker Skating. And dedicated non-anime figure skating tumblr accounts. And the both national and international figura skating fans group  on facebook  - whose main/core base may overlap with YOI watchers but for the most past it doesn’t. They are  by average VERY gracious with all newbie fans whatever their walk of life or fandom btw. Just a tip. Because really those who love and/or practiced  the sport all started somewhere. Even you Anon - for constantly keeping people updated about old  present and new ice talents worldwide  and available streams for us poor fans who cannot subscribe to paid channels or won’t get any news at all on telly until the next Euros/Worlds/Olympics (because we are not in 4cc as a nation hence it’s not relevant #logic) - as long as Cappellini/LaNotte and/or Kostner skate there mind you. Otherwise who knows here TV-wise.
Thanks YOI specifically for being a love letter to the sport and being such an uplifting humanistic watch about growth and understanding and meeting people halfway. With their quirks their flaws their own cultural background and all.
Thank you Anon for reminding me that YOI’s  above message is really one that is sorely needed ;P.

How to deal with Lionel Messi getting older
Tumblr media
There is still no way to truly appreciate how incredible he has been.
Lionel Messi’s first goal of this new season was a free kick that went under the jumping wall of Deportivo Alavés defenders and into the bottom right corner. He scored a similar goal against Girona in early February, that one went in the opposite corner. He also did the same for Argentina a few years ago.
Free kicks that go under the wall are fun for their mischievousness. In those instances, Messi is punishing the wall for doing what it has been instructed to do, for taking the sensible action of jumping to block the free kick.
youtube
Messi wasn’t the first player to score that type of free kick. Andrea Pirlo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Philippe Coutinho, Mario Gotze, Marcelo Diaz, Kyle Walker, Santi Cazorla, Elano, Rivaldo, and so many other players have punished the wall for doing their job. But when ESPN wrote about the goal they labeled Messi’s as “Ronaldinho-esque.”
The reference was to Ronaldinho’s famous free kick against Werder Bremen in the group stages of the 2006 Champions League.
youtube
That reference to Ronaldinho triggered a realization for me: Messi is old. It’s a fact of life that people age, but he had been so good and consistent for so long, that I had taken him for granted.
His absurd reign of dominance is almost exactly as old as Ronaldinho’s free kick. Ronaldinho’s goal was 12 years ago. Messi was 19 then. He missed that game against Bremen because of injury, but he had already established himself on the first team. More than that, he was seen as something extraordinary.
And not just in terms of potential. Ronaldinho scored that goal in December after winning the Ballon d’Or at the start of the year. In his acceptance speech for the award, he said:
“This award says I’m the best player in the world, but I’m not even the best player at Barcelona...Leo Messi reminds me more of Maradona, both left-footed and short, Messi is the best player in the world, along with Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. For us it is not a surprise. Since he began to come and train with us and we knew we would go down this path. Someday I will explain that I was at the birth of one of the footballing greats: Leo Messi.”
Twelve years is a long span of time in the real world, which makes it an eternity in soccer. Things change drastically every year, by the nature of the sport. That something or someone can remain relevant, let at alone be the best, for so long is truly incredible.
Messi has also changed so much during that run that I’m not sure if it’s possible to properly grasp and appreciate what he’s done. When he is gone, he will seem fantastical. So much so that it seems we have a problem in the present of truly reckoning with the wonder that he is.
He has been so many different things that to think of Messi as one self, is to miss the magic of him.
The nature of sports time makes appreciating the totality of an athlete’s career difficult. Soccer’s cycle is vicious. It devours players and discards them and inevitability leads us to forget those who weren’t the best of the best.
Seasons never end. Once competition begins, the matches come rapidly out of a huge number of different leagues and tournaments. This goes on throughout the year, and at the end — when trophies are won or lost, when standings are solidified — the transfer window begins. During that time there’s often also a summer tournament, and as the tournament ends, preseason begins again and so, too, does the cycle.
Teams rarely stay the same. Transfer windows mean the selling and buying of players, and can also mean a change in manager. Everyone is perpetually under threat. Once someone stops being useful, they have to be sold or released.
Within so much unceasing turnover, it can be easy to forget people, or reduce their legacies to the best three or four years that they played. When we think of Xavi, we don’t think of 2006 Xavi who was coming off the bench to replace Iniesta, we think of Xavi at his during the Guardiola years. Ronaldinho is Ronaldinho at Barcelona — his time before and after are footnotes.
Messi’s dominance is a conundrum because not only does he exist outside this cycle, but he has violated the very idea of “peak” years. It’s hard to think of him as a whole because he’s been so distinct in different eras. There is no peak with Messi, only phases.
The Messi of Rijkaard is different from that of Guardiola’s. Guardiola’s Messi was different from Vilanova’s. Vilanova’s was different from Martino’s. The same for Martino to Enrique’s, and Valverde’s Messi seems to be an all-conquering combination of his previous selves.
Messi has been a standard winger, an inverted winger, an inside forward, a false nine, a striker, a playmaker beneath the strikers, a midfielder ... and now he can do whatever he wants.
Each coaching regime also brought in new teammates. Messi transformed and prospered with so many different forwards. He’s been in a front three with Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o, then with Thierry Henry and Eto’o, and another with Pedro and David Villa. Arguably the best combination was with Neymar and Luis Suarez. Now he is with Ousmane Dembélé and Suarez. He’s been with Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, too.
Messi has also played well within different combination of midfielders. There was the famous triangle of Yaya Toure, Andres Iniesta, and Xavi, which then replaced Toure with Sergio Busquets, and then Ivan Rakitic in place of Xavi, and now with Coutinho sometimes starting in Inesta’s place.
With all of these different players and coaches, Messi had to adjust his style of play to fit in. In the process, he brought out the best in those around him. Before Messi, Barcelona had only won the Champions League twice. Since then, they’ve won it three times. In the last 10 years, they’ve won the league seven times, and that success extends to the Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, and the Supercopa de España.
I don’t think we have the language within soccer to grasp what Messi is and what he has done. He’s so out of the norm of the game that there’s no real reference point to him. We have different tools and ways to talk about him, but the most they can do is give a glimpse.
It feels rudimentary to measure him in terms of trophies won. The same goes for goals, assists, or any other statistical measurement. Conversely, even a discussion about aesthetics, emotion, and intelligence doesn’t do him enough justice. For every goal and assist, there’s been a nutmeg or a defender left despairing on the ground.
We need both the subjective and objective to get close to describing what Messi is. You might say Messi is encapsulated by his most famous goal, when he beat four Getafe defenders and the goalkeeper in homage to Diego Maradona’s “Goal of the Century.” But we need to note what a prolific force he was, too, and how often he ended seasons with 50-plus goals and 20-plus assists. Messi can play as the forward and score, and then he can drop into midfield as a deep playmaker, control the game, thrive on one-touch passes, flicks and feints ... and score. He’s great in numerous positions, and always surpasses expectations.
To properly appreciate Messi, we have to capture the process of appreciating Messi. The beauty of it. The feints, nutmegs, the unsuccessful dribbles that makes one question whether he’s human or not, the one-time volley passes across the pitch that land on the feet of his teammates, the way he moves, the fear that defenders feel that is so visible to the audience, how the eyes of the audience are always fixated on him. We also have to talk about his metamorphoses, then within that, the distinction between each Messi.
We also have to talk about how normal it feels to be so uniquely captivated by a man. Somehow Messi has come to make those 50-and-20 seasons seem routine when they’re absolutely not. He is in a special place in our consciousness. Isolated. Somehow both a supernatural and standard presence in his sport.
Messi’s under-the-wall freekick goal against Alavés was Barcelona’s 6,000th goal in La Liga. He also scored the 5,000th in 2009. He has accounted for 6.4% of Barcelona’s total league goals. And he’s the first player in modern La Liga to score in 15 consecutive seasons.
None of those facts are surprising, and that’s such a weird reality.

We seem to have exhausted all of our metaphors and superlatives for Messi. Even writing about him, about how great he is, only seems to reduce the truth. Only Ray Hudson — as brave and ridiculous as he is — comes close to giving the due respect that the greatness of the Argentine deserves.
I don’t know if we can ever truly conceive what Messi is. I also fear that when his career is over, the unceasing nature of forward progress in soccer will see him crudely packaged in the same way that happens to all great players. As a singular grand image, without distinction and fault, something to be used to burden future generation of players, as Maradona had been used against Messi. He will be a ghost of who he was.
Personally, I’ve always seen Messi as a representation of infinite possibilities. When he’s on the field, anything can happen. That’s a feeling that I don’t get by watching anyone else, and that alone is exciting even before any action occurs.
A friend of mine recently described being a soccer fan as an acute pain that we voluntarily subscribe to. A pain that is not liberating, nor educating, nor something that builds resilience. “It’s shit until it’s not and then it can very easily get shit again (when hope builds so does the fall) and that’s literally the whole cycle. A choice we keep making to feel something.”
For me, watching Messi has been the opposite of that acute pain — opposite the essence of the sport. No matter the result or performance, he is always a pleasure. He is a master artist, and simply witnessing the process of someone so extraordinary, a genius, is enough. But as a master, his work is almost always stunning.
The cycle of the sport will eventually devour and discard Messi as it has done to everyone else. That’s the inevitability and unfairness of life. He will start to falter at some point, and when he has retired, he will become a myth to the new generation of fans. They might know him through his numbers or videos of his dribbles, but it will be difficult for them to understand how tremendous he was, because we can’t even do it in the present.
The reference to Ronaldinho after Messi’s Alavés goal showed how much time has passed. It was saddening. So, I watched Messi’s next game against Real Valladolid with a sense of urgency, of desperation, with the fear and knowledge that his end is ever closer.
But there was a happiness in the failure of contemplating the totality of him, too — a happiness that stems from the struggle. The difficulty itself is the answer to his greatness. Maybe he doesn’t need to be resolved. It is wonderful to have witnessed a player that has gone beyond the world we know.
