so i started this show and it just gets worse and worseeeee not only did it lift the romance subplot directly from twilight (and not well) but they also are trying to play the forbidden love angle hard in the fantasy racism vein except it's a "cross-species" relationship between the two whitest people i've ever seen in my life and there are three people of color in the whole (first season of the) show who aren't villains and it seems that every other episode (and sometimes ebery episode and sometimes twice an episode!) there is a man physically or magically subjugating a woman and i keep waiting for the big reveal at the end to be stolen from fucking rainbow rowell
#yes i read 'carry on' by rainbow rowell in middle school what else could you have possibly expected from me. anyway she gives me simon snow#vibes and not in a good way and she's even blonde while her british vampire boyfriend has dark dark hair and just. you will never be basil.#also i hate to be that guy but the writing has made me physically recoil and the acting almost reads as silly but mostly as middling :/ and#i wanted and expected more from matthew goode bc i really liked him in downton but i guess this is a 2018 bbc modern vampire fantasty serie#like i guess.#also there's SO much shit about bloodlines and maybe i'm gay with a blood disorder amd a family history of adoption but like. who fucking#careeessssssssss it ahould not be that serious. why is it that serious.#also the fantasy racism kind of reads like it's mesnt to be? homophobic adjacent? like there's a Lot of 'love who you love' talk going on#for the single most bland heterosexual relationship i've ever seen on a screen like there is so little chemistry? so little#anyway it's called 'a discovery of witches' and i'd recommend not watching it 🫶 or if you do then watch it on 1.5x speed#it's been decent background noise for knitting bc i kinda sorta care about the plot but if miss a chunk bc i'm in the lace chart zone i do#not care and i do not have to go back to catch it bc the writing is so transparent#there was another series it stole from that's escaping me atm but when i noticed it pissed me off a touch. hmm maybe it will come back to m#a post#do not watch this show#I REMEMBERED they wanted the juliette holding diana captive moment to be joaquin's 'i want to watch you fuck her' from sense8 SOOOOO BAD bu#it WASN'T bc they were too afraid to lean into anything that would make juliette interesting at all. for being all about the world's most#special blonde woman this show does not seem to like women very much. sad! well there's other shows#OH ALSO ALSO there are 3 magical 'creature' species which are witch + vampire + femon except the demons don't seem? to have any magical#abilities that humans don't have besides sensing the species of other creatures? like witches can cast spells and vampires do their various#vampire things but demons have nothing going for them except disproportionately high rates of homelessness and suicide?? like girl what are#we doingggggggg what are we doing here !! what's their deal why does no one care !! can they do anything or no !! god this show sucks

I adore how tactile Wolfgang and Felix are. It’s so obvious how much they love each other. They’re always touching - slapping each other’s backs and squeezing each other’s shoulders and touching foreheads and hugging. They’re not afraid to let other people know that they love each other and would do anything for one another.
#their friendship is so special to me#also Lito calling Hernando and Dani ‘family’. that too.#this episode is a gift <3#sense8#my own post

I’m 28 and have dated anyone, I tell myself because my otp met at 31 I have time till then before I start freaking out.
(It helps me)
But like, my otp prove to me it’s okay and normal to be immature inexperienced at 30-ish because they’ve on a national television show that was the most popular cable show on tv at one point.
People love them, so I must be lovable for being like them.
that is actually very heart-warming and a good way to come to terms with your situation. because like it's totally okay to be inexperienced at 30ish and that doesn't make you any less lovable. i think diverse representation in media is very important and it definitely helps to see yourself reflected in the stories that are told. manifesting you love <3
#thank you for sharing!!! made me think about a lot#i'm grateful for the scraps of representation i've been able to see during my formative years.#like skam orphan black and sense8 were there which i loved. but then again there's also the special flavor of growing up fat.#always either the comic relief best friend or then having to go through a Transformation to be worthy of love. i think that fucked me up#so yeah. it is all connected i think#answered

Feel like I'm kinda doing this backwards by having sense8 be the last piece of the Wachowski filmography I get to (I suspect that for the tumblr crowd, it's more likely to an intro point).
#sense8#my intro point was jupiter ascending via tumblr post lol#don't recall it that well though (i was like 16). would probably have to rewatch to really feel like ive seen the Whole Filmography#matrix 4 was obviously the special interest sparker

This article about Dead Boy Detectives and Netflix's stewardship of LGBTQ+ shows is my Roman Empire
I'm linking the article below, and it's one of the best analysis' out there about both the significance of Dead Boy Detectives' being cancelled, but also the bigger picture of why this is so significant to both fans and the LGBTQ+ community at large. Please read (and share!) the article, Why we need more queer art, not less-the case of Dead Boy Detectives, written by Karla Elliott.
A damning excerpt, and article linked below:
"Netflix has long tried to market itself to audiences just like this as an alternative to more traditional media companies. Yet its cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives is another in a long line of queer shows and shows with queer storylines – such as Sense8, Julie and the Phantoms, and Shadow and Bone – to be axed by the company before their time.
The showrunner of Warrior Nun, another of Netflix’s prematurely cancelled shows, even revealed that Netflix pushed back against the writers developing a queer romance for the show’s second season.
Meanwhile, the streaming service continues to platform performers such as Dave Chappelle, who used his latest Netflix special (his seventh on the streaming service) to double down on jokes made about the queer community, particularly targeting transgender folk.
It seems, then, that companies such as Netflix are still largely only interested in token queer representation, and only if and when it aligns with ever-shifting profit goalposts."
She goes on to talk about the crew and fans rallying around Dead Boy Detectives and taking a grassroots approach to save this show. She links IG and Twitter posts (it'll always be Twitter, to me), and she includes The Petition in her article.
She also accurately addresses the NG elephant in the room, pointing to his limited involvement in the show and how Dead Boy Detective fans have "resolutely condemned his alleged actions and stood with the women speaking out against him. Their outrage perfectly aligns with the core lessons of the show, which counters harmful gendered stereotypes and advocates for men to take responsibility for their actions, hold one another accountable, process anger, and open up to feelings like love and empathy."
She concludes, and I must admit, this brought a tear to my jaded 'lil heart, that "[t]hrough its community-building, energy, and activism, the fanbase is proving to be the living embodiment of the lessons Dead Boy Detectives has to teach us about solidarity, love and care."
So, go us. Keep at it. Don't loose hope. And please check out this article. I gave you a sneak peak, but it's chalk full of really good information and I promise you'll be glad you read it.
#dbda#dead boy detectives#save dead boy detectives#edwin payne#charles rowland#niko sasaki#crystal palace#renew dead boy detectives#netflix#excellent article about dead boy detectives#Netflix's history with LGBTQ+ shows and y'all it isn't great#but I believe there are people at Netflix who want to do better#we just have to convince the decision makers to make better decisions#specifically to bring back this show#Season 2 is already written#we just have to keep being loud#we have unfinished business#Let's get this job jobbed

I’ve just finished my rewatch of Go Ahead, a cdrama you will probably never watch because it’s het and mostly about family trauma. But it’s one of my all time favs and one of the best things about it is the strong found family theme—it’s essentially about three broken families and how they join together as one to support each other. It got me thinking about my fav found family narratives, and especially those that are explicitly queer, because there’s often added life or death stakes in those stories. What are your favorite found family stories in queer media?
This is an interesting question, and I think you qualified appropriately right away by bringing up the life or death stakes of this kind of narrative. I think I want to make a distinction between "finding your people" and "found family" because I think these things often get blurred in romance stories.
Favorite Queer Found Family Stories
For me, a good found family story has to be about the found family component of it. Romance can be a significant portion of the story, but the primary driving relationships need to be about the queers being each other's primary network. I think estrangement from your bio family is a critical component, because knowing you are all each other has is a big part of it.
POSE (2018-2021)
It's really impossible to establish what found family looks like without referring to a show about ballroom culture in NYC in the 90s. We were dying. We were being abandoned. The houses gave people a place to be and a sense of purpose. These kids called their leaders Mother for a reason. Every single queer character in this show was saved by another character in this show before going onto save another character in this show. No show has ever done it like POSE.
Despite their fighting and bickering, Elektra saved Blanca. Blanca would go on to form her own house and provide shelter and support for multiple kids. There is a desperation to queer found family for me that makes it so important. Pray Tell's final choices still resonate with me to this day.
Queer as Folk (2000-2005)
We remember all of the fucking in this show, but this is another show where the queers are their primary support network. Their families aren't really there for them. Justin is kicked out of the house and lives with Debbie for a while, and is nursed by his community after being bashed. Michael and Ben adopt Hunter. Brian donates for Lindsey and Melanie. Debbie housed Brian in the past. Emmett's family disowned him, so his friends are all he's got. The community rallies constantly to protect each other.
Part of what makes this show so special as found family, like with POSE, is how often these folks piss each other off and get into huge fights. They fall out repeatedly in this show over fundamental disagreements that are not easily solved. Some of those fights are ugly in a way only people who know you best can hurt you.
The Fosters (2013-2018)
There's no way I'm not including my favorite TV lesbians of all time raising all them kids on this post. These two public servants found each other, made the difficult choices to be together, and keep expanding their family with more fosters and adoptees over time because there's always more love to go around. This show tackled how important it is to be able to call people family, and what it means for that to be a choice over an obligation. These two always found a way to make it work for their complex family and gave a budding queer the space to grow and be a brat of a teenager after saving him from having the shit beaten out of him for wearing a dress.
Sense8 (2015-2018)
From the directors of The Matrix (1999) and the creator of Babylon 5 (1993-1998), few shows are as queer as Sense8. Eight strangers suddenly become connected to each other and cannot turn it off. Half of them are queer in some way, and it's about their adaptation to each other and looking out for each other as they're literally being hunted. This is one of my favorite sci-fi concepts of all time, and I love the way their relationships outside of their cluster play into their dynamics.
She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat (2022- )
This is a recent favorite for this, particularly because of Season 2. In Season 1, we know that Nomoto puts a distance between herself and her family because of the pressure to become a wife. In season 2, we learn that Kasuga has severed ties with her family because of the expectation that she surrender her own life to take care of her family. When she tells Nomoto this, Nomoto gets angry on Kasuga's behalf and they decide to commit to living together. They are also building their community around them, and I better see everyone in their new apartment in season 3.
Gameboys 2 (2022)
So much of what's going wrong for Gav in this season is that he doesn't feel connected to the rest of his bio family after his grandmother passed, and he's desperately holding onto all of the friendships he has because he's so lonely. It's why he's still close with both of his exes (Pearl and Terrence), and why he won't let them go. Also, he's falling apart and Pearl is the one making sure his bills get paid on time.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Shout out to my man Doug Jones for always playing creatures that everyone is attracted to. The way this movie is so much about undesirables choosing to love each other and saving each other. Go watch it if you haven't. This film is not about a sexual awakening. It's about loving inside of a white capitalist structure.
Not Queer But Good
Shout outs for my faves. Some have queer characters in them, but aren't inherently or explicitly queer.
The Golden Girls (1985-1992)
No one did it like them. A bunch of aging women living together and making the most of their lives still resonates almost 40 years later.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)
All of these kids are estranged from their families, and are building out something that works over the course of the show.
The Good Place (2016-2020)
I really love that this is a show about people who didn't get it together in life getting it together in the afterlife because they decided to work together, and then to care about each other. When you're literally being tortured by devils, you're all you've got.
What Doesn't Fit?
This is where things can get a little bit wiggly, but why I want to draw a line on this. I think that shows about queer friendship are important, but I also think that there's a difference between "we are all we've got" and "these people are the most important to me." So we end up with shows like the following.
Noah's Arc (2005-2006)
I often call this the Black answer to Queer as Folk, but I don't think it had time to fully-develop the found family themes in a way that QaF did with its much-longer runtime. Noah and his friends are super codependent and absolutely there for each other, but I don't think the absence of their families is explicitly attributed to their queerness but rather a byproduct of the focus on their gay life dynamics in LA. I love this show dearly, but there isn't a desperation to this that belies the family angst necessary for found family.
For The Boys (2021)
youtube
In many ways a spiritual successor to Noah's Arc, this show falls into the same place. The friend trio at the core of this is the most important relationship in their lives, but this show doesn't have the necessary found family angst.
What about QL?
For me, the biggest problem with doing found family in QL is that the primary genre is romance. These shows prioritize the way these relationships will turn romantic in a way that detracts from the found family component even when it's present. Also, because QL focuses so hard on coming of age plotlines, there's an element more of "finding your people" that supercedes any found family dynamics.
I Promised You the Moon (2021) is a good example of this. The primary drama of this show is about the romance between Teh and Oh-aew and the complications they face once they leave Phuket. Oh finds his people there and blossoms from it, but this is a story about how he and Teh can't get over each other.
As much as I love What Did You Eat Yesterday? (2019- ), the only real component of that is in Wataru's character. Kenji gets along with his mom and sisters, and Shiro is working on repairing the relationship with his family the entire time.
With Thai BL especially, I feel like they're big on friend groups, but not as big on found family. New Siwaj loves big friend groups that love each other, evinced by Love Sick (2014-2015), Make It Right (2016-2017), Until We Meet Again (2019), EN of Love (202), My Only 12% (2022), etc. He's done some great work in the space with queer friends, but not really queer found family.
Cheewin, a former collaborator of New's, also loves friend groups that have each other's backs. Probably his best example of that is Secret Crush On You (2022) with that friend quartet. The closest I think he came to found family was Uea in Bed Friend.
Another example that comes close is the unit that forms on their road trip in The End of the World With You (2023). I often think about this group of queers and the kid they adopted screaming to the heavens that they want to live.
Something I love, but which doesn't count for me is Our Dining Table (2023). There are powerful family dynamics here, but like in WDYEY they're adding Yutaka to their family and Yutaka reconciles with his adoptive family. I don't generally think that adding a romantic partner to your family counts as found family. Besides, Yutaka has a stable job and housing.
Final Thoughts
For me, the stakes are pretty high with queer found family, and it really needs to have a queer basis for me to feel strongly about it. Going back to their bio family is not an option, and often times the terms we use for traditional relationships don't always fit properly (yet another reason why Unknown got so much right). I don't think it's queer found family when they're students in college whose families just aren't around because they're paying for their kids to go to school. Finding your queer community as an adult is a huge part of growing up, but a queer found family is there for the really ugly and desperate parts of existence that your friends might not see.

Yes! Me too! Good times
This is why I never want to hear people saying: „shipping is not activism“ because it CAN be if you want to. F.e.:
I helped to get sense8 a special because I wanted to see Aminta and Nomi marry (i took part in a one month long fan campaign: telephoning, mails, postcards, videos, flip flop mail ins etc)
I helped to make Thasmin canon and Yasmin Khan queer in Doctor who because Thassies were shipping Thasmin like crazy after s11 aired (later i took part in campaigns like: #letthirteenkisswomen and in the Thirteenfanzine)
I helped to make Jaskier bisexual because I shipped him and Geralt… and also because of Joey (I had multiple chats with LSH on Twitter and Instagram (where she answered btw) and told her how important queer Leads in the Witcher would be for fans (also ciri btw) and always reblogged and tagged Netflix and the writer room of Witcher because they DO read our comments)
Point is, shipping can lead to more on screen representation of queer people if you put some effort into it and if you take parts in campaigns etc.
As a fandom we are strong, when we work together we can achieve so much for on screen representation of lgbtq people!
And I am honestly so proud of us!

Get to know your moots.
Thanks for the tag @almostempty and @probablyreadinsmut 💗
what's the origin of your blog title?: “When it comes to love I don’t choose sides” y'all know where it comes from, right? Oberyn 💗 it represents me well heheh
favorite fandoms: PPCU and I used to be a huge GOT fan.
OTP(s) + shipname: Braime, Jaime Lannister + Brienne of Tarth (don't talk to me about that shitty ending, it still haunts me in my sleep)
favorite color: black. But also red, white and pink.
favorite game: I don't play videogames since I was a child but I used to love Tetris and Pac-Man lol
song stuck in your head: currently Messy - Lola Young and another couple of songs I'm using for a ff I'm writing so no spoilers heheheh
weirdest habit/trait?: I have a closet full of clothes but I often tend to wear the same ones in rotation (I obviously wash them regularly 😂) out of convenience and habit, especially if I have to go to work. I only make an effort if I have dinners/birthdays/special occasions and things like that lol
And I regularly think that people hate me, so if I don't write to you often it's because I'm afraid of bothering you, not because I don't want to know you 🥲
hobbies: writing, reading, watching show/movies, I used to have a bullet journal and I used to practice hand lettering (can't keep up with it anymore but I still love it)
if you work, what's your profession?: I am the secretary in a medical office. I also have another job related to customer satisfaction.
if you could have any job you wish what would it be?: I'd love to be a writer (lol not skilled or even talented enough but hey, what do you expect from someone who shares her birthday with Emily Brontë?)
something you're good at: I’m quite good at cooking. I’m Italian, baby, it’s in my genes.
something you're bad at: I’m messy. I can draw like a 5 years old kid lol
something you love: concerts. I’ve been to 100+ concerts in my life and some of my favorite memories and trips are related to concerts I've been to.
something you could talk about for hours off the cuff: I could still rant about Braime and GoT ending for hours. lol Also, concerts memories, I have some good stories 😂
something you hate: Lies. God, just tell me the truth ffs. And the majority of cis men. They just suck, you know.
something you collect: nothing. But I love stationary stuff. I could buy everything, I don't do it because I would waste my savings LMAO
something you forget: If I don't write things down on my phone it's very easy for me to forget them because my memory sucks.
what's your love language?: Cooking for someone, calling people a variety of pet names and/or finding a special one for them, being a great cheerleader, shower them with compliments and love. Just being there when they need help, I am a reliable person.
favorite movie/show: too many, jeeez. How am i supposed to choose? Some movies: When Harry met Sally, Parasite, Almost Famous, Fried Green Tomatoes, Brokeback Mountains, Stand by me, Aftersun, Past Lives, Promising young woman, 10 things I hate about you, Love me if you dare, Rear window, Le conseguenze dell’amore (The consequences of love, it’s an Italian movie by Paolo Sorrentino).
Some shows: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Friends, Fleabag, Jane the Virgin, My Brilliant Friend, When they see us, Sense8, Peaky Blinders, Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale, Grace and Frankie, Bojack Horseman, Normal People.
favorite food: sorry to be such an Italian clichè but pasta and pizza. I could eat them all day everyday lol I also love a good risotto, sushi and Pad Thai.
favorite animal: dogs. I love all of them but especially mine (obviously lol).
are you musical?: I can sing quite decently (I sing in in my car all the time hahahah) but I never studied music and I can’t play any instruments.
what were you like as a child?: I used to be bold and chatty, I always loved reading and writing.
favorite subject at school?: Literature and Art.
least favorite subject?: Math. I’m the worst at it.
what's your best character trait?: loyalty and respect. I never make unsolicited judgments about anyone's body or comment on it, I never ask those shitty questions like "when are you graduating, when are you getting married, why are you still single, when are you having a baby" you know, right? I hate them, I hate them deeply and I think people should mind their own fucking business.
what's your worst character trait?: Lack of self-esteem, laziness, my poor memory. And I don’t give second chances, once you hurt me you’re out of my life permanently and I totally forget about you like you meant nothing for me (I kinda love that about me but I know it can be brutal lol)
if you could change any detail of your day right now what would it be?: I wish I was damn rich and not have to work hahah I would like to be more sporty but I hate doing sports lol I promise I’m going to try to force myself to do something for my well being.
if you could travel in time who would you like to meet?: The first person that comes to my mind is Artemisia Gentileschi, (b: 1593 d: 1656) she was an Italian painter. Read something about her, she’s fucking great ♥️ Also, my grandpa, I loved him so much and he passed away when I was 15. I would love to meet him again.

Get to know your Mutuals
Thank you for tagging me @perlen-gold! 🖤
What's the origin of your blog's title? @lvsifer and I were talking about a certain Middle-Earth cookbook with some truly funky recipes, unfortunately there were none for Mairon so we were like... What would he eat? He would definitely be into eating raw meat. Mettbrötchen are a German specialty, basically a bread roll with butter and minced raw pork (yes, you heard that right), preferably with pepper and red onions. So Mairon's Mettbrötchen was born - doesn't it just fuck phonetically?
Favorite Fandoms: The Silm fandom 🖤 I have never been truly active in any other fandom.
OTP(s) + shipname: Angbang (Mairon/Melkor). Most other ships I love/like are fucked up in a way that makes OTP sound wrong to describe them (not that an OTP can't have a fucked up dynamic of course!).
Favorite color: red, black, gold, rusty colors, yellow
Favorite game: Not a a gamer person.
Song stuck in your head:
Weirdest habit/trait? Super randomly talking to myself when I'm alone at home? Could be pieces of dialogue I'm planning for a fic, could be imaginary discussion scenarios with friends or coworkers... you name it.
Hobbies: Writing.
If you work, what's your profession? I'm a linguist specializing in language change, particularly grammatical change. I don't currently work in that field though; I work at a technical university in event management and student recruiting.
If you could have any job you wish what would it be? I'd work as a linguist and teach at university again.
Something you're good at: Learning languages quickly, imitating native accents in languages (other than English, probably due to my idgaf attitude when it comes to that, so have a weird mix of different accents in English mixed with a very slight German and Dutch accent. lol), teaching, public speaking, being thoughtful with gifts, cooking
Something you're bad at: Remembering birthdays, sometimes texting back, sometimes cleaning, MATH (oh god)
Something you excel at: being anxious, overthinking, understanding how languages are structured and applying this to learning them
Something you love: reading, poetry, writing, my apartment, partying, various altered states of consciousness from time to time, dancing, 80s music, techno, prosecco, cooking, food, Berlin, fandom, my mom, my friends, traveling
Something you could talk about for hours without off the cuff: linguistics, language change, The Silm
Something you hate: coriander and water melon
Something you collect: Nothing really that comes to mind.
Something you forget: birthdays, appointments
What's your love language? The concept of love languages has its problems but if I just use this to describe how I do express my love: giving cute gifts, cooking for people, listening to them, open communication, spending quality time together
Favorite movie/show: LOTR and MANY more, show: DARK, Sense8, The Sinner
Favorite food: so many different soups, kebap, pizza, STEAK, schnitzel, peruvian food, birria tacos
Favorite animal: three-toed sloth
Are you musical? I know how to play the saxophone and I did so decently. But I wouldn't say I'm musical.
What were you like as a child? I have to quote @perlen-gold here: An insufferable know-it-all.
Favorite subject at school? German, English, philosophy, biology
Least favorite subject? MATHS. And PE.
What's your best character trait? I'm honest and good at communicating openly.
What's your worst character trait? Avoidant behavior, procrastinating literally everything
If you could change any detail of your day right now what would it be? I would make the sun rise again so it doesn't feel like another of those depressing winter nights.
If you could travel in time who would you like to meet? I can't think of anyone I'd genuinely want to meet.
Recommend one of your favorite fanfics (spread the love!):
elektra by @lvsifer. What a masterpiece. Also please have a look at the fanfics I recommended here!
Last but not least, show your favorite fanart of your favorite character(s) (please remember to credit/add links!):
Mairon by @lvsifer
So many more art from talented and skilled artists that I love, but I had to make a decision here and this one will haunt me forever 🖤
✨Tagging @crackinthecup, @cilil, @elevenelvenswords, @admirably-abhorrent, @tauw-nu-fuin, @peasant-player, @blauerregen and @lvsifer

u know what we really missed out on in sense8 that i know a future season wouldve given us? lito and capheus in mortal danger in a similar way to what we see with riley and will and wolfgang
obvs especially capheus is in very mortal danger often, but i mean within the larger story. for that story to converge on them and for the rest of the cluster -- epecially wolfgang and sun (lito's and capheus' respective special protectors) -- to lose their shit, because they're the sunshine of the group, the butterflies, the light
+ youknow. i like the angst of "cinnamon roll characters in mortal peril/getting hurt where you truly feel the unfairness of a situation and so do the people who care for them"
also all three their respective partners would go full terminator, i believe this
#lito and capheus alas also just never got the time to become fully a part of the Big story#like they were always involved in some way in supporting the others within it because it also affected them#but never as directly as most of the others#and it was slooowly beginning to happen esp with capheus in s2 but argh we never got to see the end road for that#this also goes for sun ofc but on the sunshine note#also ngl sun deserved to have a fucking breather#sense8#wolfgang bogdanow#capheus onyango

I've just finished my like 100th re watch of sense8 and I again can't even begin to explain how much this TV show means to me. Its something so special and means so much to me. I love it and I will always recommend it as a TV show that should be seen by everyone. HOWEVER please go into it with caution and look for content/trigger warnings of individual episodes because there's some stuff that should be warned for

"Netflix’s recent cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives is about more than a TV show – it’s about the fight for queer art and representation.
In a world of attacks on queer rights and queer folk, including rising transphobia, Dead Boy Detectives is a desperately needed piece of queer art.
[...]
The show centres and celebrates queerness and tackles serious issues regarding violence, justice, and accountability. It’s also an exemplar of diverse media representation and inclusion, with three of the four main characters people of colour.
It captured a loyal fanbase, excellent critical reception and reviews (including a 92% approval rating and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), and good streaming metrics, staying in the top 10 shows on Netflix for three weeks. It was even submitted by Warner Bros. (one of the show’s production companies) for Emmy nominations in several categories.
[...]
Positive, nuanced queer representation on screen is still hard to come by. Damaging stereotypes and tropes like “bury your gays” – where queer characters are killed off to further the narrative of heterosexual characters – are still routine on screen [...]
[...]
Much queer media still focuses on narratives of trauma and tragedy, understandably so in some ways, given the prevalence of these experiences in queer people’s lives.
But Dead Boy Detectives stands out by refusing to be reduced to representations of queerness as suffering. It does explore trauma, hardship, and death, but it also presents a world where queer love and solidarity are mainstreamed and valued, and where even queer joy and creativity flourish.
[...]
Netflix has long tried to market itself to audiences just like this as an alternative to more traditional media companies. Yet its cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives is another in a long line of queer shows and shows with queer storylines – such as Sense8, Julie and the Phantoms, and Shadow and Bone – to be axed by the company before their time.
The showrunner of Warrior Nun, another of Netflix’s prematurely canceled shows, even revealed that Netflix pushed back against the writers developing a queer romance for the show’s second season.
