Intrigues and Ambitions: The Political Landscape of Philip and Juana's Court

Erasmus' Epiphany speech in 1504, which he gave to Philip on the Coudenberg, was fatter than most speeches.

The princess was as chaste as Penelope; as pious as Claudia; as noble as Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi.

Yet, Erasmus had a pointed message: Spain was a temptation that Philip (and, by extension, Juana) had to resist.

Speaking in the voice of the Low Countries he declared:

“Spain crowned you, but I bore you. I admit I owe everything to you, but in return you owe yourself to me. That is a bold thing to say, but it is the truth. For I know I address my true prince, and not a tyrant.”

Jan Smeken, leading poet, or facteur, of Brussels’ chamber of rhetoric, De Lelie (Lily), feted Juana’s return in similar vein as essential to the peace, prosperity, and impregnability of the Low Countries. He compared her to the Trojan Palladium, divine image of Pallas Athene, which had put Troy beyond the reach of Greece.

But neither Erasmus nor Smeken had counted on Philip’s new favourite, Juan Manuel, lord of Belmonte de Campos, brother of the late Marina Manuel, and an ambitious and able diplomat. Manuel had helped prepare Juana’s first voyage to the Low Countries, commissioning the two Genoese carracks.

Although loyal to Isabel, he had a passionate antipathy for Fernando and was determined to whet Philip’s appetite for Castile.

Fuensalida felt sidelined:

“Don Juan … speaks in such obscure terms that I cannot understand the meaning, although I understand the words … They only speak to me in general terms; they do not call me to their meetings. I understand that these are about matters very different to those your highnesses would like to hear about, indeed, they are the contrary of them…”.

After Manuel’s arrival, Juana’s relations with the three Spanish ambassadors, whose joint despatches resound with Manuel’s voice, deteriorated sharply.

Tres grandes motivos para ver ‘El Señor de los Anillos’ de 1978

A partir de hoy 26 de enero, El Señor de los Anillos de 1978, la primera adaptación audiovisual del mundo imaginado por J.R.R. Tolkien, volverá a los cines españoles por un tiempo limitado. Se trata de la obra de animación dirigida por Ralph Bakshi y cuyo reestreno llega con motivo de la celebración de su 40 aniversario.

La cinta dividió tanto a público como a crítica. Mientras que para sus detractores supone un auténtico tropiezo fílmico, para sus adoradores constituye una genial obra de culto. Lo que sí tenemos claro desde 35 Milímetros es que se trata de una película clave para entender la trascendencia del prestigioso escritor británico y su obra. Es por ello que, ya seas detractor o amante del trabajo que realizó Bakshi hace cuatro décadas, os traemos hoy tres grandes motivos por el que acudir a las salas de cine y visionar este curioso largometraje por su cumpleaños.

Mérito técnico

Esta versión de El Señor de los Anillos constituye un auténtico experimento fílmico. Y es que se decidió emplear la técnica de la rotoscopia mediante la cual se filmó con actores y en escenarios reales para colorear posteriormente esos fotogramas de forma manual. Un titánico trabajo que dejó una huella muy personal en la cinta.

No quedan ahí los méritos de esta adaptación. Y es que se trata de una de las películas de animación más largas de la historia, alcanzando los 130 minutos de metraje. Y se quedó corto, ya que, por cuestiones de presupuesto, Bakshi y su equipo tan solo pudieron rodar la primera parte de su plan original de dos películas, dejando esta cinta a la mitad de la historia de los libros del profesor Tolkien.

Aun con todo, la banda sonora fue muy celebrada y llegó a recibir una nominación en los Globos de Oro gracias a la partitura compuesta por Leonard Rosenman, que había ganado dos Oscars anteriormente, uno por la música de Barry Lindon de Stanley Kubrick en 1976 y otro, un año más tarde, por Esta tierra es mi tierra.

       2. Su influencia

La mera existencia de esta película sirvió para resucitar el interés del público a nivel internacional por los trabajos de Tolkien. Los personajes de la Tierra Media comenzaron a estampar camisetas y productos de merchandising, a la vez que elevaron las ventas de la trilogía en las librerías.

La chispa que prendió la película de Ralph Bakshi sirvió además para que Peter Jackson tomara ideas para su propia adaptación de El Señor de los Anillos, calcando escenas clave de la historia.

3. Rodaje en España

Como ya hemos señalado, la técnica de animación empleada para El Señor de los Anillos obligaba a buscar escenarios reales para su rodaje. El equipo de Bakshi se decantó por venir a España a rodar las secuencias de la batalla del Abismo de Helm, en concreto en el Castillo de Belmonte, en Cuenca. Dato curioso: ese mismo castillo había sido elegido para el rodaje de la mítica El Cid, en 1961.
