Bethany

I started my journey at Nossi College of Art with the intentions of never photographing people. It’s not that I don’t like interacting with people, I just couldn’t see myself photographing them. Basically, I wanted a subject that didn’t talk back to me. I was set on doing strictly commercial, product work, and fine art photography. Even though I have had many portrait classes, I still wasn’t set on photographing people.

This last weekend, I had the opportunity to take some senior portraits for a close friend of mine’s sister. I was skeptical at first because I don’t typically take these kind of portraits, I usually take fine art portraits. I, of course, didn’t oppose this photography opportunity because even though that isn’t my style, I still love taking photographs.

I first started talking to my friend’s sister, Bethany, about what she imagined her senior photos would look like. We talked and she decided on going on location to a nearby park, and going to our high school’s soccer field for sports pictures. I began to do research on Pinterest of senior portraits in similar surroundings. I planned to show these to Bethany when the shoot began.

We went to the first location on the soccer field and started to get ready. Bethany’s sister, Brittany, has helped me on shoots before, so she was happy to be my assistant for the day! We moved the soccer goals to the right position for a clean background and began shooting. At first I was nervous and felt unsure about what I was doing, and I feel that read to Bethany, but after a few minutes of shooting my creative juices started flowing and the shoot started to go great! We went to various locations on the field and did several variations of portraits. Bethany had many ideas of what she wanted and brought many props to use!

After we finished, we loaded up all the props and headed to our second location. Our second location was at Barron Fork River Dam and to Riverfront Park, which were in walking distance of one another. Our main goal was to go to the dam, but to get there we had to walk through the park. We made our way through the park while making stops at interesting locations the park offered. We walked through railroad tracks, which connected to the dam, which made for an excellent backdrop for Bethany. We finally made it to our grand finale, the dam! This location was spectacular, and Bethany was a great sport! She was definitely not afraid to get in the water or sit in the falls which was very fun for me to shoot! Bethany and I had a blast wading through the water to find the best spot to shoot and once we did it was like magic! After stumbling through the water and slipping on rocks, we had the shots we wanted and called it a day!

We had the best day for shooting senior portraits. It might have been extremely hot, but we had big, fluffy clouds and great scenery to work with. It all added up to make for a great experience for both of us, plus we have some great images to come from it! It helped Bethany was such a great sport and we had help from her amazing family.
