Approaching Seventy
A spider crawls beneath the screen,
designs a web in the corner and waits
with the patience of a calendar.
This is the end of summer,
scent of decay everywhere in the outside air,
flowers, planted last spring with such
a sense of promise, leaving one by one,
disappearing into the earth.
I think of endings--
final page of a novel
and the characters you've come to love
placed on the shelf,
a wave from a doorway-- those slight
or heavy sadnesses---
friend in Sagaponock the last time I saw her,
waving from the dock as the ferry pulled out
and the wake lengthened between us,
or swells on a stormy crossing,
pine boughs, dark, lifting and falling
in heavy rain, one night of my childhood,
beyond the small stair top bedroom
at my aunt's Vermont inn, as I lay awake--
wood smoke and voices from the lobby below,
a memory of suitcases standing by a farmhouse
front door, milk cans topped with snow, the pale
complexion of my mother who left and didn't return,
memory of lilacs--branches my brother and I used to climb through,
scratching ourselves as we hid from each other--
not long ago, at an airport, we hugged goodbye again--
what I left behind when I moved
to this senior apartment--some feeling of usefulness,
half of my books, most of my clothes.
Sometimes, it feels as if I've said goodbye to everyone.
Through the north window, I watch clouds move off
beyond my vision, and somewhere dissolve into rain.

Flowers start to bloom and tree start to grow their leaves back. Everything seems to be waking up once more and the sun seems to start warming up once more. Its spring! Like every nook and cranny in nature that’s waking up, it’s time to get up and get moving like the season. There are lots of ways to do that and one great start is doing some exercises well suited for spring.

three whole days in new york was a lot of fun
i bet i could do some serious damage in that city if i lived there lol
catching the subway at 11pm with a teenager both fresh off the plane all the way from jfk to hoboken not knowing i could have died?
sights seen: brooklyn bridge, flatiron, statue of liberty, wall street, stock exchange, one world trade centre, saks fifth avenue, central park, the met (briefly), the friends apartment
saw an influencer shooting onlyfans content completely nude in central park
saw the yankees win at home with two home runs with amazing bars pre and post
rounded the corner from the friends apartment, found myself in a pride parade and then kesha was randomly performing???
saw moulin rouge on broadway, then cash took me to times square
where we stumbled into the wade vs roe street protests -- insane
made friends with the girl beside me during the yankees game, she scored me reservations to peak and crown shy
learnt how to do coke the "new yorker way"
partied until 6am before dragging my sorry ass across state lines watching state of origin updates was definitely novel
hailed a taxi which was cool
probably walked ~45-50km in total just because
ate bagels, pizza, catalogued all the names they called me at starbucks, fell in love with chick-fil-a and brown sugar floats at dunkin' donuts
then caught a plane to boston (mistake, should have caught the train) and i thought i was going to andover, ma BUT NO i was going to andover, nh
turns out the conference was at some elite boarding academy in the middle of rural new hampshire and actually.... turns out it wasn't my field at all (they were chemistry, i am biology and the intersection is small believe it or not)
i was disrespected so many times and at one point, one of the giants in the field told me to "shut up" and i gave it back to him bc guess what... he's a nobody in MY field.
the conference for the most part sucked, my talk was given to someone else bc i wasn't "senior enough" when in reality it's actually all MY data like what..... i know that data better than my own boss tbh
the chairs wanna talk about empowering grad students during every lecture session blah blah blah but then the one real opportunity to do just that presents itself and they knocked me back
i asked (read: begged three times) them to give me a slot and it was fucking humilating -- nobody in my own country cares about copper, i go to the once place people care about copper, and my work falls on deaf ears
anyway i ended up making a bunch of new friends, came up with a new experimental technique i think will be of major interest and managed to squeeze a hike and a wine tour so all was not lost
i feel like this was reaaaaallly good practice for spain where i will be talking in only a couple of weeks (#girlboss) where people will be in my field and hopefully appreciate my work!!!!!!!!
went back to boston and visited harvard... very very cool. would love to have spent some more time but just needed to get home so booked flights 24h earlier to buy some time in sydney lol
fact: human bodies aren't meant to hurtle at 1000kph for 23h across the world
so even though flying premium+ economy was fantastic
i don't reckon i could do that to myself more than once a year which really raises questions about a future postdoc in the US

From Thomas F. Sullivan Arena, St. Anselm College, Goffstown, NH – Friday, February 28, 2020
It’s that time of the year again, when the regular season winds down and teams honor their seniors while jostling to improve their tournament seeding. Friday night was Senior Night for the Grizzlies and they honored the four seniors that will be graduating from the program in a few months. On the ice, Goffstown electrified the home crowd en route to a convincing win, 8-3 over the Admirals.
(Players L-R) Melanie Riendeau, Theo Milianes, Colby Gamache, Drew O’Brien. (Sage Photo)
Not only was it Senior Night for the Grizzlies, but they were also playing for a chance to host a quarter-final playoff game instead of opening the tournament on the road. With their win, and with Merrimack beating Oyster River, 1-0 at the same time, the Grizzlies jumped into the #4 seed. Goffstown will host #5 Oyster River at 4:00 pm on Saturday, March 7th. The teams split a pair of 3-2 decisions against each other during the regular season. Each team earning a win on their home ice. So this quarter-final game should be a dandy.
To be fair, the Alvirne-Milford Admirals were missing several players from their lineup on Friday night due to illness and injuries. Even so, the Grizzlies were the favorites after grabbing a 7-3 win down at Skate 3 in January, and also they had 12 league wins to the Admirals’ 2 wins. So, Goffstown did as they were supposed to do according to the trends following each team. But one of the things that I love about sports is that attitude and effort are both completely up to the participants. Alvirne-Milford did not roll over, they skated hard, and gave effort shift after shift. As they should. The attitude, well that I am not so sure about for a few players on either side of the ice. That’s not necessarily a knock on any of them, more a deep observation, and I have been thinking about this while the game was unfolding on Friday night. And ever since.

#3, Alternate Captain, Theo Milianes. (Sage Photo)
#22 Drew O’Brien. (Sage Photo)
#24 Melanie Riendeau. (Sage Photo)
#14, Captain, Colby Gamache. (Sage Photo)
This may, or may not, speak directly to this particular game. It may also speak to every single game so I am going to go through my thought process that runs somewhere between me, my iPad, the scoresheet, and my little notebook while I watch live sports play out right in front of my eyes.
First, I speak of attitude. Webster lists a number of definitions of the word, attitude.
Here are some of them:
4a: a mental position with regard to a fact or state
b: a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state
6: an bodily state of readiness to respond in a characteristic way to a stimulus (such as an object, concept, or situation)
7a: a negative or hostile state of mind
b: a cool, cocky, defiant, or arrogant manner
So, in my words, attitude is more or less being in the frame of mind (predisposition) to be willing to do something when one is presented a situation. Frame of mind is powerful, just think of how we read an innocent message or email we have received when our frame of mind is anything but.
Then there is the whole idea of behavior. Again, I call on Webster for the definition of behavior.
Here are some of them:
1: the way in which someone conducts oneself
2a: the manner of conducting oneself
b: anything that an organism does involving action and response to stimulation
c: the response of an individual, group, or species to its environment
Again, in my words, behavior is the expression or action chosen in response to the scenarios presented in every moment. Many believe that people are predisposed, or inclined to behave in a certain manner based on examples instilled in our very existence. Simply, behavior is learned.
Imagine a teen-aged athlete shows up to compete in his or her sport with, among other things, the following factors racing through their every fiber. They may not know that they are inclined to act in a certain way because they are in a frame of mind that allows them to be willing to do something based on scenarios that affected their attitude, and will do so based largely on a catalogue of behaviors that have been imparted on them since their life began. Talk about unpredictable. Talk about the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Talk about parenting, coaching, and role models.
Brennan Pierce and Colby Wright defend out in front of Madeline Sage. (Sage Photo)
I feel for the individual youngsters that have so much to overcome simply because we as parents, coaches, or role models inhibited their growth and development by not allowing them to reach for the sky, fall on their face, or get back up again, because our agenda, behaviors, or habits were some weird self-defined protective, stifling bubble of our own insecurities. Our demons pulled us down and we weren’t going to make that trip alone so we brought anyone loosely attached to us down too. Or we went to bat for kids that should have batted for themselves because they are smarter and more able than we think. Perhaps, our career, or our dreams didn’t go the way we wanted them to so we invest a small fortune into something that is a passion of ours, and not necessarily theirs. So before you finish the thought about that guy, or she this, or they do that, I remind us all of the mirrors available to each of us. And if that’s not enough, the reflection we need may just be walking around in our lives every day we’re fortunate enough to open our eyes again. Ironically, in nature, the fittest survive. That is the natural selection.
Alright, folks if you are still here, thanks for hanging on. I see things. I hear things. I am told things. I witness interactions. I sense things. I am haunted at times by the collections of these things, and I write my piece, so that perhaps others, and myself can be at peace.

Oddly, I didn’t really make any notes during the game on Friday night because things were happening so fast. For starters, in a pre-game presentation, the Grizzlies recognized their four senior players and their families, they honored a senior’s dad who is battling poor health as we speak, we all paid respect to another senior’s dad who passed away nearly two years ago, we talked about the meaning of legacy, and told the story of volunteering efforts and fundraising for a cause, and remembered a military hero that was one of New Hampshire’s own. That was all before the National Anthem was sung by a man who holds each of the opponents on Friday night very dear to his heart.
If that sounds like a lot, it felt like a lot, but I wouldn’t trade it for any other place or time. The game started at 7:32 pm and the Grizzlies were ready to go no matter what time the game started. I will say that Cody Rae-Crussland made some sensational saves in this game and the score wouldn’t indicate as much. Goffstown pounded the goalie, the net, and whistled other shots into traffic, over and beside the net in the first period. The home team outshot the visitors 16-2 in the opening period, and the 4-0 lead could have been much more one-sided were it not for Cody’s efforts in net.

With relentless pressure things tend to crack or break. Once Colby Gamache lifted a one-handed backhand shot past the Admiral goaltender at 6:10 of the period while the Grizzlies were short-handed things started to come apart for the visitors. When Goffstown was afforded consecutive power play opportunities on Admiral double minor penalties, they took full advantage. The Grizzlies scored the next 3 goals in a span of 65 seconds. On the power play Grady Chretien continued his other-worldly season with a goal set up by linemates Drew O’Brien and Colby Gamache at 12:21 which was on the first minor penalty. Then at 13:10, on the second of the double minor penalties, Xavier Bibaud scored his first career goal with assists going to Eric DesRuisseaux and Luc Ouellette. Then, back at even strength, Gamache scored from O’Brien and Colby Wright.
In the second period, the Grizzlies started to cycle the puck even more, working depth players into their lines and trying to create opportunities for them. Even so, sometimes the puck still finds its way into the scoring areas with a first liner on the spot. Such was the case at 2:43 of the period when Grady Chretien slid the puck into the net after a feed from O’Brien. Then Theo Milianes eclipsed his single season high in goals scored on his Senior Night after a nice play from Calvin Sage at 4:25. Alvirne-Milford erupted with a goal of their own on a nice sequence of plays from Zach Greer and Chris Bedard that led to Corey Girouard’s goal at 4:52 of the period. Goffstown added another power play goal at 9:12 when Colby Gamache finished off an offensive zone possession that seemed to last for minutes with a goal from Grady Chretien. On the play, Gamache registered his 123rd career point for the Grizzlies which moved him past Griffin Cook (’19, 48g-74a-122p) as the all-time leading scored in Goffstown High School hockey history. Since I am a nerd for numbers, it also marked Colby’s 99th point scored since the beginning of last season. Hey, my Dad started showing me how to score baseball games when I was about 5-6 years old. Anyways, the second period ended with the Grizzlies holding a 7-1 lead on the scoreboard and a 30-9 advantage in shots on goal.

The Grizzlies gather together after the seniors have been announced. (Sage Photo)
One of my favorite moments at our hockey games, lined up, facing our flag, to honor our country and the game. (Sage Photo)
The third period was running time. There were 30 minutes in penalties called between the two teams, just 5 shots on goal, and somehow 3 more goals scored. It wasn’t the best looking period of hockey anyone has ever seen by a long shot. Zach Greer made the score 7-2 at 1:57 of the period with a goal set up by Brennan Levesque. Goffstown answered at 4:39 when Sean Hunter scored his first career goal from Theo Milianes and Melanie Riendeau. Somewhere between the 7:00 and 12:00 mark this game almost left the rails completely. At 14:37, on the power play, the Admirals scored when Dylan Jillson rambled in all alone and scored to make the final score, 8-3.
I didn’t mention Maddie Sage much, or at all until now, in this recap because she wasn’t tested a whole lot which can make it hard to get into any kind of rhythm for a goaltender. Though, to her credit, in a stellar career thus far, she notched her 20th career win against only 6 losses to date.
As I said earlier, the win gave Goffstown the #4 seed in the tournament, and they will host #5 seed Oyster River on Saturday, March 7, at 4pm on the campus of St. Anselm College. I will have more on the tournament pairings in the next couple of days.
Thank you for sticking with me here. I routinely prove just how imperfect I am. Despite my many faults, I long to help, teach, or lead anyone I can in ways that would make life better for them, even if it’s just a reason to smile or to construct a sense of belonging. Let us carry ourselves well, not for the look of it, but for the authentic care and kindness towards others because we possess the choice to do so.

Aging is a natural process in life, and while starting the conversation is hard, everyone goes through the same stage so it is neither embarrassing or trivial. If anything else, it is a very important topic especially if one’s parents’ health is already declining that they need assistance in their day to day routine. You may keep on putting it off at the thought that they can manage themselves and talking them into assisted living may mean not seeing them as much as you do now. However, know that you are helping them out and making their lives better in helping them transition in a new phase in their life. Below are some tips and guidelines to help you get the conversation started with your loved ones.

Mystery in Allenstown
For most people in New Hampshire, the story began in the fall of 1985 in the little town of Allenstown, population 4000ish and best known for being home to Bear Brook State Park.
It was there, on the outskirts of the park, that brothers out hunting discovered the remains of a woman and a girl wrapped in plastic near a 55-gallon barrel.
The bodies were found on private property where a small camp store with an apartment above it had once operated. Bear Brook Store had burned in July of 1983 but the shell of the building remained, along with a mobile home, a camper, and various vehicles, barrels, and appliances scattered across the property. The hunter, himself the father of a young daughter, who spotted a foot sticking out of the plastic was so traumatized by his discovery that he said it took him ten years to go back into the woods.
As NH did not have its own Medical Examiner's office, the bodies were flown to Maine to be examined. These sketches were released in the media and authorities covered a lot of ground hoping to identify what was assumed to be a mother and daughter. However, investigative efforts did not lead to answers and eventually, the two bodies were released for burial. Chief Connor organized a graveside service in the parish cemetery that was presided over by the town's Catholic priest and a Methodist minister.
They were buried together in a steel casket so that they could be exhumed easily if someone came forward to claim their bodies. The owner of Epsom Memorials donated a granite stone for their grave and carved a rose and figures of the woman and child holding hands.
Over the years, while investigators followed the leads that came in, Allenstown residents experienced a deep unease around the questions that lingered. Who were those girls? Who could have bludgeoned and dismembered and discarded them like trash?
Town officials wanted the Bear Brook Store property cleaned up and there was a Danger Notice attached to the 1997 tax record for map 407, Lot 023 that stated, "Posted Unfit." The following year, an assessment card states "mobile home uninhabitable" and "vacant vandalized." It is chilling in hindsight to read the accompanying dump site report which lists: abandoned vehicle Chrysler 4 door sedan (rust), HTG appliance (illegible), enclosure falling down, with wires and pipes, several 55 gallon drums some with trash in them, construction debris, old machines (axles, lawnmowers) strewn about, approx. 30 feet in from the road.
Fast forward fifteen years and
State Police Sgt John Cody was assigned to the case. New Hampshire did not yet have a cold case unit and troopers were assigned old cases to work.
On May 9th of 2000 while examining the area, Cody located another barrel about 100 yards from where the first one was found, and discovered that it, too, contained human remains. They were found to be the remains of two little girls. This led to the exhumation of the 1985 victims in order to have DNA comparisons done. The testing found that the woman was related biologically to the oldest child (who was found in the barrel with her) and to the 2-3 yr. old girl found in 2000. Authorities came to believe that the four victims were killed at or near the same time in the late 1970s to early 1980s. The realization that one child was not related to the other three victims was puzzling and led to speculation about the whereabouts and well-being of her mother. Later, isotope testing done on the victims showed that the woman and the two girls related to her may have lived in the areas highlighted in green on the map below (State abbreviations added by me)
The information was released for the first time that the two little girls had also been killed by blunt force trauma to their heads. The jolting images shown in May of 2016 of the caved-in skull of a little girl generated renewed speculation about what kind of individual was capable of this kind of violence against little children.
Little did we realize then that we were less than a year from getting our first glimpses into a back story that would bring together investigators on both coasts and yield a whole slew of new questions.
~ ~ ~
The first hints came on December 28th, 2016, when a story broke in New Hampshire about a woman named Denise Beaudin who moved away from Manchester with her infant daughter and her boyfriend Bob Evans in 1981 and was never heard from again. The article was entitled "35 years later, authorities call Manchester woman’s disappearance suspicious."
Although the story didn't mention anything about the Allenstown cold case, the name "Bob Evans" set off alarm bells for a number of Allenstown area folks. This was the same name that we (Oakhill Research) had been asking about for several years. In fact, ever since July 28th, 2014 when Ed Gallagher, the owner of the Allenstown property where the barrels were found, told us that he thought that one 'Bobby Evans' left the barrels on his property.
We went to the January 26, 2017 press conference in Concord NH with a a multitude of questions. Also attending were former Allenstown residents Paul Chevrette and Ron Sayles. Speaking that day were Michael Kokoski (Supervisor in the NH Cold Case Unit), Jeffery Strelzin (Senior Assistant Attorney General Chief, Homicide Unit), and Ryan Grant (Detective Captain in the Manchester Police Department).
To assist in relating the story, the presenters distributed an informative summary of events that recounts how these cases on the east and west coasts were finally connected in the story of the man once known in NH as Bob Evans. The authorities presented a succinct timeline to help the public navigate what was known about Evans as well as a handout that listed aliases/characteristics/unconfirmed travels etc. that might have shed light on his true identity. They released pictures at the press conference as well as maps of Evans' travels and made the Power Point of the presentation available.
~~~ In brief, we learned the following:
The name 'Bob Evans' appeared to be an alias and his identity was still unknown. DNA testing revealed that he was the biological father of one of the little girls found in 2000 in a barrel, the child who was unrelated to the others. Her actual identity was still unknown and police were concerned that her mother might have been another victim.
The identities of the woman and the other two children were still unknown but DNA testing showed that Evans was not related to these two children, nor was Denise the woman in the barrel. Authorities now believed that it was likely that the victims found in Allenstown were all killed prior to December of 1981 when Evans disappeared from Manchester with Denise. A possible clue to the adult victim's identity might lie in the story shared about a mystery woman named Elizabeth.
Police feared that Evans likely killed Denise at some point and although he had also killed his own daughter, he spared the life of Denise's baby daughter Dawn. In a story that seemed surreal, we learned that Evans changed Dawn's name to Lisa and later gave her away to strangers. In an ironic twist, it was Lisa's own search for her identity that proved to be the catalyst for unraveling Evans' legacy of lies. She was recently reunited with her relatives in Manchester NH. Her survival was a happy note in a sordid story, although her mother's whereabouts are unknown.
The beginning of the end came for Evans when he was arrested in California in 2002 for the murder of his partner, Eunsoon Jun. He was living under one of his many aliases, when authorities, investigating Jun's disappearance, found her bludgeoned and partially dismembered body under a pile of cat litter in their home. A home he continued living in after he killed her.
'Bob Evans' died of natural causes in High Desert Prison in California in 2010. He left many mysteries in his wake, perhaps none more puzzling than that of his own identity. Who was this man who behaved so savagely to the women and children in his life? Where did he come from? How many other victims did he leave scattered across the continent?
To have pictures and video, new victims, and a string of aliases now attached to the Allenstown killer was an odd turn of events when his identity was still unknown. All over the country, investigators, genealogists, and websleuths began trying to figure out the real identity of the bogeyman who now had a face.
Seven months later, the NH State Police issued a press release. 'Bob Evans' was in fact one Terry Peder Rasmussen. DNA had confirmed a match with a son of his. Exactly how the son had surfaced on the radar of authorities has not been disclosed. There was no opportunity for the media to ask that question as this time around, the detectives did not hold a press conference in conjunction with the release of new information. Suffice it to say, within minutes of the release of Rasmussen's name, websleuths around the country were scrolling through his family's Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace pages, fascinated to learn more about the history of this man of mystery and murder. An uneasy dance unfolded on the Websleuths forum where researchers posted information about him and administrators warned them about not posting information about his relatives, themselves victims of his mayhem.
The reaction from the people of Allenstown was a far cry from that of the websleuths. Learning that Rasmussen had four adult children, siblings to the little girl in the 2000 barrel, Oakhill Research was contacted and asked if there was a way that the people of Allenstown could reach out to his living children. To say that they had never forgotten the little girls in the barrels and had never stopped praying that they would be identified. To say that they had tended the grave and visited it over the years until the day family could come forward. To say that their hearts went out to Rasmussen's children for the difficult spot they found themselves in and that the people of Allenstown would now say prayers for their peace and comfort as they had for the other victims.
Getting Your Retirement Nest Ready
Retirement can either be exciting or daunting, depending on how much cushion you prepared for yourself. If you are part of the former, congratulations! Your hard work paid off and you can now harvest the fruits of your labor. However, if you find yourself to be the latter, don’t fret yet. You still have time but don’t rush to a retirement calculator just yet and start taking these actionable steps to help you get ready for retirement.
The first step is self-awareness. Ask yourself, “How much do I have stashed away for retirement?” Second question should be, “What kind of lifestyle do I want?” Once you have the answers to these two questions, move on to the next step, you can now punch some numbers into a retirement calculator so you know how much money you should have saved up and how much more you need to get there. Just note that it is recommended that you retire with some saving of at least 10 times your last full time work year’s income. After getting that magic number, you can move on to the most exciting part, what steps you can take to get there.
There’s two ways to go about with preparing for retirement when you’re in your 50’s. You can either reduce your expenses or increase your income. Reducing your expenses means going back to the second question you asked yourself, which asks you to determine what kind of lifestyle you want. If you find yourself reading this article seriously, then you may want to opt for a low-key lifestyle that does not cost as much. Some cut down their retirement expenses by finding hobbies that do not cost as much. Retirement is often associated with more expensive toys to play with, but it does not always need to break the bank if you can find yourself enjoying in things that comes cheap. After all, most of the best things in life are free right?
If you prefer to find ways to earn more to maintain the lifestyle you are accustomed to, it would help if find yourself enjoying your full-time job so you can keep on putting money into your retirement accounts. People who are 50 and up can stash away $24,500 in a 401(k) and up to $6,500 in an IRA. Another path people, who are less averse risk like to take, is trading in the market. Stocks and bonds are two vehicles seniors can consider if they would like to make their money to grow. Just a word of caution though, you may want to keep an eye on the market of you go down this path because it is like gambling if you do not know what you’re doing. The rule of the thumb here is the higher the risk you take, the higher the reward you’ll get, however, this rule should be taken with more seriously especially when you are retirement. You can’t really afford to lose a lot of money, unless you don’t want to stop working. If you’re unsure how stocks and markets work, you’ll be better off with bonds as long as the interest rate is higher than the current inflation rate. If the rate is lower than inflation, then you’re just losing money so you might as well just leave it in your savings account and avoid the transaction costs associated with it. Another opportunity for seniors is part-time work and other job opportunities that the “gig economy” presents. What is the gig economy? It is the segment of the workforce whose work is characterized by short-term contracts and freelance work on almost any type of work. While pensions are unheard of in these job contracts, it is still a great way to earn a living at your own terms. It is also a great way to keep yourself busy and have a purpose, as you can learn new skills while doing these side hustles.
Now, this is just a starting point for you in getting your retirement nest ready. You can learn more about being financially independent by attending classes that is geared towards helping you be prepared and informed about things like Medicare, estate planning, and other financial matters. Calamar delivers these classes as part of their Connect 55+ program available in different independent senior apartments, such as that in Kansas City, KS. There are also senior apartments in Kansas City, MO and some retirement communities in New Hampshire, NH that offers the same program.
Top 4 Amenities in Senior Home Hunting
Finding your retirement home is like finding a spouse, you look for what you want and fits with you well and not what everyone thinks you should go for. If you plan to live there for a long time, you might as well find one that you’ll find enjoyable and worthwhile to stay in. That being said, the perfect senior apartment varies from one retiree to the next and so this guide just gives you some ideas on what to look for when asking yourself, “Does this senior community meets my needs?”
There’s probably two things you have to do, know what you’re looking for and compare your narrowed down options to just one. In doing so, you have to think about and compare some some of these key areas:
1. Location. Is it close enough to your family and friends that they can visit? The older one gets, the more one realizes how important having one’s family around is. With everyone getting busier, you might want to consider making it easy for friends and family to visit you and vice versa, and that means checking if your senior apartment has a quick access to major highways. You want to be close enough to be able to visit grandkids and watch their games and see them grow up. These are kinds of memories that you cannot really put a price on, and it will only be made possible if you also make it easy for you and them to see you on a regular basis. Aside from that, you may also try to evaluate the kind of lifestyle you want, would you like to spend more time indoors or outdoors? If you like being outside, see if your go-to places are close to the senior apartment. If you like going to trails, you’ll definitely gonna love the Prairie View Senior Village. It has miles of trails you can go every morning at the High Trestle trail. If you like the coastal life, consider Maple Ridge Estates At Bedford, one of the top senior apartments in New Hampshire, NH. It is close to lakes, mountains, and the coast making it easy for you to maintain an active lifestyle. If you spend weekends going to art galleries and attending cultural events, you will enjoy Manchester & Concord. If golf is your hobby, it is also close to golf courses so you can practice in the afternoons. If you like wining and dining in the evenings, it is only walking distance from shopping malls. If location is your top priority and you are from IA, Prairie View Senior Village is a great option among 55+ apartments in Des Moines, IA.
2. Neighbors. You will be spending majority of your time in your retirement home so you will also spend a lot of time with the residents living in it. Make sure that during your first stop in the senior apartment, get a feel of the people living in it. Are they the kind of people you will get along with? Better yet, can you do activities such as biking and walking with them? If you answer yes to any of these, then you can put the senior home on your list of potential new home.
3. Services and facilities. There may be some things that your home offers that you are used, and if this were to be your new home, it would be worth keeping an eye on these things when you tour your potential senior apartment. Say, you the kind of person who spends the summer eating barbeque, the Grand Estates on Greenwood has an exterior deck with gas barbeque and television to entertain yourself and guests. If the outdoors is not for you and you prefer being indoors, you will enjoy the Maple Ridge Estates AtBedford. It has everything that an indoor person would love. It has a 40-seat theater for movie nights, a billiard room to spend the afternoon in, an exercise room to work out in the morning and a library to head to after a hearty breakfast. There are even faith services available on the premise. To top it all, Maple Ridge Estates also have a security system to make sure that all residents are safe.
4. Suites. Some tasks become harder to do as one ages, so it helps when your suite or your floor has most of the features that you need to get the basic things done. After all, if you were to be an independent senior, you want to do most things on your own right? The Grand Estates on Greenwood has trash chutes and mail room for every floor. One amenity that is heavily overlooked are elevators and this senior apartment in Kansas City, KS has it so getting around will never be a hassle. The same amenities are also available at Prairie View Senior Village and it also has walk-in showers/tubs and private balconies too. Now, you can enjoy life without worrying about the fuss and stress that home ownership brings.
These are just four of the many amenities you should look out for when touring a senior apartment. All senior communities Calamar offers have these amenities, so if you are interested, book a tour with us!
Creating Lasting Relationships with Grandchildren
Among the best things about being retired is being able to spend one’s time with loved ones, especially grandchildren. As your grandchildren goes through their own life stages, their interests change as well in the same way you transition from having no social time to having more free time that you would like. So, what’s the best way to spend time with them as they get older? Here are some ideas and fun activities you can do with your grandchildren.
When they are in their early years just around 8 years and younger, arts and crafts are the way to go. You can construct paper lanterns, help them learn the art of origami and spend hours flying paper airplanes or floating paper boats on streams. Painting is also a nice activity to spend with your grandkids. They will surely love the colorful paintings you will both end up with. Making lava lamps is also never goes out of style for kids and you may also pique their interest in both science and art.
When they start their middle school, you can keep their interests and nurture their love for learning. If they express interest in science, you can help them out in their homework or science fair projects. If those do not exist, why not make your own experiment with them? There are tons of resources online such as the egg drop experiment, glowing exploding bag, and the dry ice experiments. If they are into building structures and you are a handyman, both of you may enjoy building models and creating toys together. If they enjoy the outdoors and like working with their hands, you can help them create their own fairy garden. However, for the adventurous ones, a scavenger hunt may be a great idea. Among the independent senior apartments in Des Moines, IA that is near a great venue for a scavenger hunt is Prairie View Senior Village because it is close to High Trestle trails. You’ll definitely spend a lot of time planning for that perfect adventure for them.
Once they reach their high school phase, it sometimes gets tough to build a connection with grandchildren because of their want to be more independent. However, if you have built a great relationship with them when they were younger, bonding with them will never be an issue. At this point, it may be more important to be closer to them. If most of your grandchildren are in Kansas City, it is not a bad idea to find retirement Communities in Kansas City, KS or senior apartments in Kansas City, MO. At this stage in their lives, they are most likely trying to acquire the skills they need to be more independent. You can help them by giving them a head start and preparing them with the skills they think they’ll need. The best idea may be to cook and bake with them. What makes food great is it being the common thing that makes people come together. Surely, you already have a list of timeless recipes that never fails to impress a crowd. Why not share it with your grand-kids and have fun making it together? Kids these days also have an inclination of growing their own food and starting a garden, so it may also be a good idea to share clippings from your garden if you own one. You can spend an hour each day talking about gardening tips and tricks over the phone. If they’re the builder kind and you fancy building stuff yourself, keep your hands busy and help them make make minor renovations in their place. They’ll most likely be more than happy to host you whenever you visit.
Then they move to adulthood and go through the same things you had to go through in raising them. If anything, the things that will bind you together would be sharing experiences that worked and did not work. Cobblestone Pointe Senior Village are among the the apartments for 55+ seniorsin New Hampshire, NH that are close to coffee houses and other amenities great for sharing stories over hot chocolate.“Mothers know best” did not became a famous phrase for no reason. When couples are asked what helped them the most in going through parenthood, many would say that their parents were the most invaluable resources one can ask for.
All these come down to one tip: See if you share the same passion or interests with your grandchildren, and you’ll surely find a couple of things to bond over.
