Aking Senakulo Dir. Jela Dela Peña
In a church, the golden light hits a figure’s wing scars. Their rosary sways from one hand, as sounds of leather against skin rings throughout the air. As they reach the altar on their knees, their hands come together in lieu of prayer. They find themselves transported to a place where they share food offerings and intimate touches with another being.
Aking Senakulo  explores themes of queerness, isolation, belonging, and indigenous Filipino ancestry.

Exploring the Rich Tapestry of Traditions in Antipolo
Tumblr media
ANTIPOLO CITY
Antipolo City is a highly urbanized city located in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is situated on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountain range, offering a picturesque landscape and a cooler climate compared to the surrounding areas.Antipolo is known as the "City of Roses" due to its famous Marian shrine, the Antipolo Cathedral, which houses the revered image of the Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage). The cathedral is a major pilgrimage site, attracting millions of devotees, especially during the annual Alay Lakad (Pilgrimage Walk) celebration.
And now we are going to discuss about different traditions in the City of Antipolo. So what are you waiting for, come on let's explain the beauty of Antipolo
DIFFERENT TRADITIONS
IN ANTIPOLO CITY
Sumakah Festival
Tumblr media
The Sumakah Festival, celebrated every 1st day of May. Sumakah represents different products in Antipolo, suman, mangga, kasoy, and the old transportation here in the City, the Hamaka. It started on during the time of Mayor Angelito Gatlabayan in year 2002. It's promoting the Antipoleños' culture and tradition while raising unity in the community and governmentWhen we are watching sumakah, we can see here the street dancing performance of the participants of the different groups representing their schools. Also the cultural show featuring the traditional songs and theatrical production that highlights the history and culture in the City of Antipolo
Antipolo's Alay Lakad or the
"Penitential Walk"
Tumblr media
It happened every Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, it is the part of the Holy Week celebration. Alay lakad is a mixture of a two Filipino words, "alay" means 'offering' and "lakad" or 'to walk'. It represents the spiritual gestures to regret for sins, to value the sacrifices of God, and to fulfill a promise. Wherein the people who participate in this tradition, is walks within the Antipolo's different locations to cathedral with their saint, while chanting prayers along their way. The span and distance of the Alay Lakad depend on the starting point chosen by the participants. Some may undertake a shorter journey, while others go for longer routes that span several kilometers. Despite of the distance, the Alay Lakad is representing as an opportunity for spiritual renewal and communion with God.
Tumblr media
It includes the senakulo that presents at the day time in Good Friday on March. It's a Lenten drama play which presents the sacrifice, trial and death of Christ. The word "senculo" is from a Spanish word "cenáculo" or 'upper room" which means the location of the Last Supper. It is presented by the churches, communities and the actors portraying the biblical characters just like Jesus Christ, the pontius Pilate, the apostles, and other characters involved in the trial of Christ.
Feast of Our Lady of Peace
and Good Voyage
Tumblr media
One of the most famous traditions in the City of Antipolo is the Feast of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. It is celebrated in 30th day of May.On the evening of the commemoration , a grand parade also known as the "Lakbayaw" is happened , where the image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is displayed through the streets of Antipolo City. The parade is attended by music, prayers, and the participation of supporters brings candles and banners. The parade of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is not only about the religious but also the crowd , and cultural celebrations that reflects the faith and devotion of the people in the City of Antipolo. It treats as a time for reflection, thanksgiving, prayers and fellowship between devotees as they glories and find the plan of Our Lady for peacefulness, guard, and safe passage

“Senakulo”
Senakulo is making a role play mainly pointed in passion of the Christ. A work of service by Holy Family Parish Roxas, we used to do parade then act at the certain stations so we are acting approximately 4 hours, we were doing this for 7 years we acted this every holy Friday going to church at 2am sharp for the preparations needed costumes, internalize, prayers and blessing and we will move to the first station at 6am and every stations there was a prayer before and after the act.
Fortunately I acted as a Pilate’s soldier for 4 years not bragging but it was a tough role as a soldier you will be having more lines than any other characters, if my mind will not fail me I think my dialogues were around 52 which is 4 lines more than the kawal 1. The effort of the church to prepare this is not something you can ignore the staffs, prog and props men are doing their best for the great result
Tumblr media
This was the latest senakulo we did, if you are going to watch you will know how Jesus sacrificed himself to the fullest extent that no man could have ever done, we did the preparation for almost two months, announcements, audition, workshop, roles giving, script reading, and practice for a month. The director always used to said “make it louder, we are going to act on the open areas” so as time goes by we adopted to shouting, calm yet loud and clear voice execution. I am not telling that we are experts but we are striving for better as a way of worship, the purpose of these acts is for the people to admit their mistakes and repent, we as the servers want them to look back and give more attention to what the bible is saying, the idea of doing parade and act to every stations is to let them watch senakulo effortlessly we are the one to go to your streets and will give you the opportunity to witness the divinity of God. We act this from the last suffer to the day Jesus risen from death a total of 14 stations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In these pictures you will see how Jesus suffered and carried our sins, it was a great experience given the opportunity to partake in giving the people learnings and rumination.
This act will be shown every holy Friday at 6am to around 10 am, the crucifixion of Christ, last suffer to the day Jesus risen, the pictures in which you will see the harsh punishment that was given to Jesus, the soldier who deliberately indulged pain in Jesus’s body and crucified him without sympathy, this will be interesting next year and years ahead so if you want to watch feel free the play will not disappoint you and you will be going home bearing a knowledge you really should be having, no fees, no hassle all you just need to do is to bring you own self so let us all do admit our sins and repent before the day of judgment.

EXPLORING THE RICH CULTURAL TAPESTRY OF ANTIPOLO
Antipolo is a city east of Manila in the Philippines. It's known as a Catholic pilgrimage site. In the Antipolo Cathedral, the shrine to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage has a 17th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
And now, we are going to explore and discuss the different various traditions here in Antipolo.
Tumblr media
VARIOUS TRADITIONS IN ANTIPOLO.
Tumblr media
SENAKULO
A re-enactment of the passion of christ which starts on the night of Palm Sunday (Palaspas) up to the night of Easter Sunday (Salubong). The Senakulo (Cenaculo) is conducted in the Plaza square on public theaters constructed for purposes, with the participation of village thespians with perpetual vows.
The town or church plaza, as well as the streets, serve as the venue of most Senakulo performances. In some instances, during the early 20th century, it has also been performed in sabungan (cockpits) in areas near Manila. As with other Holy Week traditions marked by community participation, the staging of the Senakulo is no different.
Senakulo actors would prepare the props and sew their own costumes in anticipation of the Holy Week while the stage is built in the plaza using scaffolding and wooden boards, which are painted to serve as the backdrop. While the stage is central to the performance of main scenes such as the crucifixion, many episodes of the Senakulo are performed while going around the town streets. After which, they circle back to the plaza where the stage is located. As the plaza is usually located in front of the church, the end of the Senakulo will serve as a transition for the viewers to attend the succeeding activities such as the Seven Last Words or the procession of the Santo Entierro (image of the dead Jesus Christ) around the town.
Tumblr media
ALAY LAKAD ; THE CITY'S TRADITION EVERY HOLY THURSDAY.
A deacon of the Diocese of Antipolo, said the city’s Alay Lakad every Holy Thursday is a pilgrimage tradition that is different from the one that starts from Quiapo Church in Manila.
The two pilgrimage activities differ not only in the dates when they happen, but also in their history, significance, and development through the years. According to the Antipolo Cathedral’s website, the pilgrimage season of the city is initiated by the annual “Visit of the Mother to the Son,” a motorcade “bearing the image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage from Antipolo Cathedral to Quiapo Church where the Black Nazarene is enshrined” every April 30.
Part of the Holy Week celebrations, Alay Lakad is a mixture of two Filipino words “alay” which means 'offering', and “lakad” or “to walk.” Holy Week is the most solemn period in the Catholic Church's liturgical calendar when Christians commemorate the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ over 2,000 years ago
They come in droves, a sea of humanity streaming along the streets like water from a gushing river, walking and plodding determinedly to reach a domed cathedral at the top of a hill in upland Antipolo, Rizal province. Years ago this crowd of long-distance trekkers reached a record five million.

TAYO NA SA ANTIPOLO FESTIVAL
Antipolo Festival "The Tayo Na Sa Antipolo" May time Festival is a highly celebrated event in the Philippines, gaining immense popularity thanks to Antipolo’s revered Marian image, known as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or Virgin of Antipolo. Held annually from the first Tuesday of May to the first Tuesday of July in the capital of Rizal province, this festival serves to showcase Antipolo as a significant pilgrimage destination in the country. Rooted in the timeless folk song “Tayo na sa Antipolo,” sung for generations, the festival aims to showcase the city’s local culture, attractions, and renowned products like suman, manga, and kasoy.
What sets this yearly celebration apart are its intriguing components. Spanning a month, it encompasses rituals like the Unang Prosisyon and Santacruzan, along with engaging activities such as a street dance competition and a historical tour. The program also features a walking pilgrimage, drawing thousands of pilgrims who actively participate in the religious festivities.
During the festival, Antipolo sees an influx of attendees, predominantly locals from Manila and nearby cities, making the journey to partake in the vibrant celebrations. Overall, the Tayo na sa Antipolo Maytime Festival stands out as a unique and captivating tribute to the city’s rich heritage and traditions.

Insecurities
I am nothing, I have nothing.
Through years, I haven’t seen myself, it is always those people around me. Some of the thoughts that run through my mind are, “I am not good at anything while he/she is good at *something*.” “Wow, at this age, my former classmate has already passed NPTE or is now working abroad.” “While me, look at me, I’m still here, I was fooled by these chinese couple, I’m still here in the Philippines”, “I’m still struggling with finances”, “I only earn this much and I still haven’t give anything to payback my parent’s hard work and I even hardly survive on my daily life. And at some point, it’s tiring.
Nakakapagod na to think of these thoughts, the thoughts that “I was never enough” and everything I have and had achieved is not enough. Sa paghabol ko sa mga bagay na wala ako, lalo akong nahihila pababa. Lalo akong nagiging stagnant instead of lifting myself up. Yes, I am acknowledging this; I hardly appreciate myself and I always thought na “ Hanggang dito na lang ata talaga ako” pero I think, it’s not. As I oppose my own thoughts, hindi naman talaga ako hanggang dito lang. I just have to do better and know better, for myself and I have to disregard other people. And how will I do that? I think I know, I just have to appreciate that I have already come a long way, I have already achieved a lot of things in the past (though it may not be enough).
Yes. I have graduated college, passed the board exam, was able to perform my duties and responsibilities as Kapisanan president and as a treasurer of our college organization, back then, I was a volunteer at church who stood up for anti mining in Lobo and also did volunteer works that helps unfortunate people and I was able to perform on stage as Kababaihan in a Senakulo play. I am trying my best to perform my duties, and this is my best to balance SK responsibilities, my career (NPTE and work) and my life.
Now, I just have to improve myself. Study seriously and be consistent with NPTE. Take photos of the pre-loved clothes and sell the perfumes consistently (okay lang na hindi agad mabenta, basta hindi titigil). Plan for family days, (planning for Inay’s 60th rn). This should be me

Reflection of the day
Sobrang nakakablessed. Sobrang nakakainspired talaga si Hesus. Sobrang humble Nya.
Sobrang mapagmahal nya.
TO SERVE MORE IS TO LOVE MORE.

Q1: First Reflection - Literature
Today, I learned that literature is an epiphany. In other words, it is a sudden realization of the reader. I also learned the difference of prose and poetry. A prose is a straight forward form of literature, wherein the author expresses his thoughts and feelings in a lucid way while the poetry is a form of literature in which the poet uses a unique style and rhythm, to express intense experience.
In addition, I learned the different kinds of literature back when the Spanish conquer the Philippines over 333 years. There are 4 types of forms of literature. The first one is Religious Literature which revolves around the life and death of Jesus, and has 3 forms of religious lit; Pasyon, Senakulo, and Komedya.
Fun Fact: Padre Gasper Aquino De Belen is the first writer and singer of the Pasyon.
I also learned something new, the three G; God, Gold, and Glory.
The next type of form of literature in the time of Spanish Era is the Secular, also called Non-Religious Literature. It revolves around tales of valiance and adventure. It also have 3 form of Secular Lit; Awit, Korido, and Prose Narratives.
The third form of literature is called Propaganda Literature which means they were in the forms of satire, editorials, and news articles that aimed to attack the Spanish Rule.
And the last type is called Revolutionary Literature, are exposes that sparked revolution and resistance in the hearts of the Filipino.
That’s what I learned for today’s lesson. Thank you.
