i too am often Thinking about my trevelyans anon! deeply troubled family verging on hawke levels of doomed by the narrative 🫶

the eldest son & most doomed trevelyan, leon is made tranquil at the start of the war. he’s a firm loyalist, so he reveals libertarians’ plans to the knight-commander at ostwick. no good deed, etc. in sander’s worldstate his tranquility is eventually cured, and while that’s not a positive experience, it does help him finally come to terms with being a mage (after 20 years…) in thea’s worldstate he chooses not to accept the cure and in damian’s he never gets the chance. ocularum sibling…

basil is the second son who got saddled with the responsibility of taking leon’s place (instead of becoming a templar like he was meant to!). in every worldstate he’s in ostwick running the bannorn while their father takes care of their mother who’s been sick with anxiety since the start of the war. this is also why he asks sander to go south to bring their siblings home.

damian is the next youngest along with his twin sister thea. he’s the only kid the trevelyans promised to the templars who actually joined the order. he’s not a fanatic, but he does earnestly believe in what the templars stand for. he’s horrified by “the excesses” of the order during the war though, which leads him to desert and look for his mage siblings. in sander’s worldstate the inquisition finds them all. in thea’s worldstate damian managed to find her before the conclave, and… well. she’s a maleficar at this point. she can’t fathom that her brother would be there to HELP her, so she panics and she kills him.

in damian’s worldstate, he very nearly has to kill thea too because she shows up at haven with the venatori. he does have to subdue her, and after they make it to skyhold she’s imprisoned. she stays imprisoned for months because he knows she has to be executed and can’t bring himself to do it. he turns a blind eye when sander eventually breaks her out. (then turns a blind eye again when he finds her with calpernia’s venatori…)

sander i’ve already talked about a little but he’s SUCH a fun character to me because being the inquisitor actually makes him worse while saving his family. the only worldstates where he is happy (and not actively becoming a worse person) are when he is scandalising marcher society by tagging along with a band of vashoth mercenaries (including his apostate gf semra adaar). unfortunately for this to happen his family has to fall apart :)

19. Did the Inquisitor begin a relationship with anyone? What attracted them to their partner?

i mean the first thing that attracts sindri to blackwall is that they think he’s hot. they would hate him on principle for being a warden if they didn’t think he was hot. they do like him more as they get to know him too tbf, but the warden thing reaaaaaaally grates on them when he gets self-righteous about it. #1 warden hater vs the warden they want so bad it makes them look stupid.

ok thea….. she’s going through the religious crisis of all time, you understand. these are not the best of times. bearing that in mind. she has an insane dynamic going on with leliana and cullen and samson. NONE OF THESE ARE GOOD FOR ANY OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED! they are getting each other through a bad time in their lives by making it worse. i’m so serious about that. the culmination of all this is a CHANTRY SCHISM, a failmarriage without the marriage & death.

sander’s in a situationship with semra adaar right up until he accidentally gets her killed at the conclave. this is followed immediately by getting into the most ill advised situationship of ALL time with solas. this crashes and burns spectacularly several months later and is followed by a series of extremely short lived relationships with dorian -> almost josie -> bull -> cass -> harding in that order. it’s all borne out of him being desperate for some kind of connection to tether him to who he is as he increasingly loses sight of that. it does not work :))))

okay I'm curious about ppls answer to this one, which canon character hates your Inquisitor in dai?

i’ll answer for sander & sindri since their beef with other characters is a bit more personal whereas my other inquisitors mostly clash with others over differences of opinion (lifelong apostate semra adaar does NOT do well with the pro templar/chantry crowd)

sander trevelyan: leliana

immediately clocks that he’s a fraud

he plays up the humble servant of andraste thing constantly and it makes her eye start twitching

the reality isn’t any better btw: he's a typical layabout youngest son with all the usual blind spots and then some

the trevelyan family ‘tragedy’ of having their eldest son and only daughter turn out to be mages... did not help things in that household

anyway, all this is made MUCH worse by the fact that josie initially likes him

seeing him flirting with her probably makes leliana wish she could get away with quietly assassinating him on more than one occasion

fortunately for everyone he fumbles josie big time 👍

this lowers the risk of stabbing, but that’s about as much as their relationship improves

it’s not for a while, not until things are properly settled but she does leave the inquisition once it’s clear he’s staying on as the head of it

this inquisition is worse off without her, but she is definitely better off without it!

sindri (brosca) cadash: rica, kalah, vivienne

some context: this is an alternate worldstate where they manage to escape to the surface with leske

the bad news: harrowmont gets crowned… and things have been much worse for the broscas ever since

this au basically came out of a 'is there a way for sindri brosca to see themself as a person' thought experiment

bc in da:o they fundamentally see themselves as a thing

a tool, in a best case scenario

they volunteer to go under branka's hammer on the anvil of the void to become be a better tool, for both orzammar and for the wardens

ANYWAY. the result of this thought experiment was yes, it can get better. but only if it first gets worse

in this case that means disappearing deeper into their work for the carta for a decade...

... then getting got by the fen’harel orb and forced into an entirely different identity even more detached from who they are

it does help to break them out of the cycle of depersonalisation, but in the meantime....

their family relationships have been made incredibly fraught by their escape to the surface

it was always bad with their mother, but their relationship with rica also begins to fray over time

financial dependence/cultural issues around being a surfacer (or have surface ties)/feelings of abandonment/etc...

it's just Not possible to untangle any of that when communication is going in the form of short letters accompanying one way deliveries of money

which go without reply…. until more money is needed

its Not Good. but it won't stay this way forever

the hate from vivienne though is entirely warranted. sindri just constantly assumes the worst of her in a way that's fueled by their own baggage

woman trapped by her circumstances seeks the patronage of a nobleman to find security by leveraging his position... hmm. why might this particular dynamic be setting them off?

why might they wish this relative stranger ill when they see this all pay off for her?

who knows. definitely not sindri who is by now an expert at NOT engaging in any self reflection

this does start to change!!

being inquisitor forces sindri to deal with a lot of the issues they’ve been actively repressing for a decade & with that comes changes in perspective too

it may just be too little too late for them & vivienne though

they will reach a point where they're no longer openly antagonistic, but i don't know if it ever improves further than that
