Bernini and Baroque Sculpture It's amazing how lifelike painters can render their subjects using only pigments and canvas. It's perhaps even more impressive, however, when artists are able to capture texture, emotion, and movement in a solid piece of stone. Marble sculpture has deep roots in European history, dating back to the societies of ancient Greece and Rome. The tradition of capturing ideal human likenesses in marble was revived in the Italian Renaissance with sculptors like Michelangelo. By the 17th century, this movement was twisting (literally at times) into a dynamic style known as the Baroque. Baroque sculpture built on Renaissance traditions, but introduced new ideas and names. One of the greatest masters of the early Baroque, a man who set the standard for the centuries to come, was Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680).
