Windy West Texas and Seminole Canyon
4/29/2014 – When I said I wanted to get out and listen to the wind for a while, I suppose I should have headed for West Texas first. I’m sure there a lot of messages in this roar, but I can’t hear them for the shouting. I finally got to US-90 after a slight detour caused by not double checking directions before I left, but the detour off I-10 to get back was nice. I found my first planned destination, Kickapoo Caverns State Park, and found it closed. Apparently they’re only open on weekends. As my next day was planned to be a short one, I drove the extra two hours to Seminole Canyon SP and checked into a campsite. Before setting up, I hiked about three miles on the canyon rim trail. Very scenic and very windy, which should have given me a clue to how the night’s camping would be. I managed to keep the tent down with rocks until I got in it for a very restless night. Still, the park and its campground are first rate. It was nice to see wide open desert again, dry canyons and mesas. And of course the humidity of the Southeast and East Texas was “gone with the wind”.
In the few hours I was near the Mexican border, I saw dozens of Border Patrol officers. West of Del Rio on the way to Seminole, like all other traffic, I was stopped at one of the three inspection stations I passed-the others stopped eastbound traffic. The officer commented on how packed my vehicle was and asked if I was on a long road trip. His only other question was if I was a US citizen. I imagine I’ll stop at a few more of these along the way.
