When I first started selling Drew’s art about a jillion years ago, we made 💰💰💰 just one way: by Drew painting one painting at a time and selling it. 🔆 We felt fortunate that enough people wanted Drew’s art to pay him to paint their surfboards and canvas. And it was great, until…we had a baby. I quit my corporate job. And we bought a house. And then we had many new expenses that Drew just couldn’t paint FAST enough to pay for. 🙃 Painting one piece of art for money is sort of like digging a ditch for money – you get paid once and then, if you want to get paid again, you have to dig another ditch. 🙃 If you are TRADING TIME FOR MONEY, you are limited in how much money you can make. 🔆 AND, having just ONE WAY to sell art limits you even more. Why? A very British review of ART, MONEY & SUCCESS cracked me up! Here it is, as posted on Amazon: 😂😂😂 "I wasn't born with a business mind, much artistic talent or any inclination to surf. So this most Californian of how-to books that focuses on how the author went about selling her surf-loving husband's art should have rubbed me – a cynical Old World Brit who merely dabbles in water colors when he's had too much to drink – up the wrong way. 🏄🏻‍♀️🏄🏻‍♀️🏄🏻‍♀️ And yet, despite the odd mix of woo-woo spiritualism and crass Yankee commercialism (you have to emanate true love for other people before you can close the deal) I found myself, dare I say it, agreeing with her. 🔮🔮🔮 After reading this personal guide to negotiating the choppy waters of making a living through creating art I was inspired. We discussed: ✨✨✨ Marketing an Identifiable Style: “The artists who make millions from their art are not the most talented, but they’ve hit on something that mass amounts of people really enjoy.” “Don’t go the traditional route of licensing, but look for opportunities where your art would be the perfect solution for a company.” “Tell clients your requirements and say, ‘This is how I work.’ Those are the five magic words.” “When you sign your agreement with a gallery make sure it’s not exclusive to anywhere other than their area. You should have the freedom to show your work in any other gallery outside that geographic area.” “When you’re younger, it’s fun to get that pat on the back, but you learn quickly that a pat on the back doesn’t pay the mortgage.” On Pricing Your Work: “Choose which market you want to be in: the high-end marketplace of galleries, the low-end marketplace of Etsy, or in the middle. Then follow the rules of that market.” “If you’re struggling with pricing, follow simple formulas such as figuring out a daily, weekly, and monthly rate. What are your MOST IMPORTANT goals for March? ✨ When I finished writing my book last year, I realized that I could have finished it in a fraction of the time. I wasted an extra 2 years on it, because I was unfocused. ✨ The only reason I was able to finally finish it is because at one point, I got so tired of it not being finished, I made an extreme decision. I got strict and made writing it a priority, every single day. I didn't allow myself to get up from my chair until after I put in a minimum of 2 hours of writing. ✨ What I learned is this: to complete your one BIG project, the project that will make the most impact in your life, you have to FOCUS on it, every single day. ✨ One practice that has really helped me to focus is this: ✨ EVERY MONTH - WRITE A LIST OF THE TOP 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I WILL ACCOMPLISH FOR THAT MONTH ✨ For the month of March, what are the top 3 most important things that you will commit to? ✨ Just choose 3 things. In the art biz, there are times that you are feeling DESPERATE for a sale. This is when some artists will off-price art or allow buyers to talk them down to nearly nothing, because they are desperate. (And trust me, I've been there!) 🌟 If you feel tempted to give your work away for nearly nothing in times like that, you have a decision to make. 🌟 Are you in this art biz for the long haul, or the short term? 🌟 A full time art gig is a BUSINESS, and you will go out of business if you off-price your work when you're feeling desperate. 🌟 The practice of off-pricing art based on desperation is a POOR BUSINESS MODEL which will lead to FAILURE. (It always does.) 🌟 And, when you change your pricing based on how you feel that month, your buyers will not trust you or your pricing ever again. (And you'll end up hating yourself for it.) 🌟 If you are feeling desperate for sales, that means that you aren't taking enough ACTION. 🌟 DO THIS: Make something happen NOW! Find a way to show your work live, figure out how to reach more buyers online, send a newsletter campaign, and start making calls and reaching out to past buyers. 🌟 Taking ACTION will lead to ART SALES. 🌟 So, what action are you going to take today that will lead to more art sales for you?
