I've received a few questions from people looking to make fan merch recently, so now's as good a time as any to update SLARPG's fan merch guidelines in our FAQ for clarity!
Selling fan-made merchandise
What's okay:
Generally speaking: independent artists making merch with their own SLARPG-inspired artwork/designs and selling it in limited quantities. This includes the usual things you'd sell at a convention like prints, stickers, pins, charms, standees, etc.
For example: if you draw a piece of Melody fanart, and you print 100 copies to sell at a convention, and then you sell the leftover stock on Etsy, that's all totally fine.
Basically anything handmade or one-of-a-kind. Cosplay items, hand-sewn plushes, Perler bead sprites, etc.
Fan zines, comics, etc. consisting of original artwork.
Also, if you're selling these things online, please try to make it clear that it's unofficial in some way, just to avoid confusion. A simple shout out in the description telling people to check out the game will probably suffice.
What's NOT okay:
A company (as opposed to an independent artist) selling unlicensed merch.
Mass-produced unofficial merch. I don't have a specific number for what counts as "mass-produced," and if something sells out I won't stop you from making more. But, y'know, please don't order 10,000 of something.
Designs sold via online print-on-demand services such as those provided by Amazon, RedBubble, CafePress, TeePublic, etc. where they can be mass-produced indefinitely.
Selling printings of official artwork from the game, presented as-is in a non-transformative way. For example: selling a poster of one of my illustrations of the cast, or stickers using the character sprites.
I'm a smalltime creator trying to make ends meet, and SLARPG and any related projects are my livelihood, so in some regards I have to be a little precious with these things. But I also get that fan artists are just trying to make a living themselves, and this stuff is usually made out of love for the source material. So I wanna allow as much as I reasonably can.
If you have further questions, feel free to contact me (Bobby) through the usual social media channels or by e-mailing me via [email protected].

you mentioned you'd be at the dokomi this year? could you share what you're selling, i can't go myself but i wanted to ask my sister who IS going to get me something...
I will!
I'll have:
The big mob x moomin print
The big farcille print
Hopefully Dungeon meshi stickers with the theme "death"... They got delayed so I can only hope I can get them before Thursday!
wizard critter stickers
unicorn charms
like... one radish-fox charm... i dont have a lot left
The Envig Comic
Botw comic (I call it Stalling)
Mechtober, Knightober Beastober collabs with Ullbors!
Sexy radish soup print
Kelpie sushi print
Goblin kitchen print
a few tiefling hot springs prints
Goat Guy Print
Lots of tiny animal-couple prints!
I'll also have a bunch of REALLY old oofuri and haikyuu stickers, pins and charms that I found and will sell super cheap because they are from like... 2016 or something....
Generally I think the big prints will be 13 euro, smaller 6, stickers like 1.5 for critters, maybe 2 for dungeon meshi stickers (they are bigger), comics 9 euros, discount old stuff between 1 and 2 euro!
Here's a picture from a swedish con that has most of the things in it (not the dungeon meshi stuff obviously)(ignore me awkwardly sitting there I will surely look cooler at dokomi):

I say this respectfully
Where the hell do you get your submas merch??? I'm dying over here, I ain't got nothing. Not big into pokemon but submas and Eevee have a choke hold on me
Many were with gifts, from etsy, or from some friend’s shops! Off the top of my head, here’s a few submas artists that have submas things:
@joltiklitwik (twitter): a widest range of different submas merchandise: from stamps, wristlets, shaker charms and more - all super cool and cute! a new wave of submas merch coming soon too!
https://izuma.storenvy.com/
@cecilioque (@/sunjuicypins on twitter) submas clothing and pins! cute stuff and coming out with some new submas plushies too!
https://sunjuicyshop.com/shop/
@fukurinn: simply amazing prints, stickers, and charms! love their colors to bits!
https://ko-fi.com/fukurinnnn/shop
@submashell: sticker sheets and single stickers that are just adorable! (their status submas stickers aren’t listed anymore tho)
https://www.etsy.com/shop/qoodling?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1258999636&from_page=listing
Those are just a few I’ve bought from personally but if you look up the word “submas” on Etsy, you’ll find so many other artists selling charms and stickers and much more!
I tend to also buy any merch of submas’ pokemon teams too! ( like @starsalts have a ton of cute pokemon only merch that are very submas core!) Good luck in your search to submasify your life!

I’ve been meaning to open an online shop but keep getting intimidated by the whole thing. I’m thinking about maybe opening a limited test run with one or two preorder items, probably the dungeon meshi charm (pictured after poll) and maybe a print. is this something people would be interested in?
please answer honestly!!! I know the economy is in shambles and people don’t have the money to spend on misc random merch so if that’s the case please vote accordingly. my feelings will not be hurt. also feel free to reblog and elaborate on your vote! I would love the feedback
also, disclaimer: at least this initial test run will probably be usa-only since figuring out shipping costs internationally is. complicated. if you’re not from the US, please vote anyway, but then if you’d like to share in your reblog/the comments that you’re international that would be helpful so I can know going forward if there is interest in non-domestic orders.
the dunmeshi charm in question:
Tumblr media
plus maybe these frieren pins??

some of the other stuff I sell at cons can be seen here: https://figofswords.myportfolio.com/convention-stock. if there’s anything in particular from there or from my art tag (#pen doodles) you’d be interested in ordering as a print/sticker/charm/etc feel free to comment that as well!

Hey guess what? I've got an Etsy store now! I'm starting off with just a few products, stuff I initially made to sell at a con, but as those sell I'm planning to sell even more fandom-related items like stickers, charms, prints, and hopefully pins and more in the future! Setting this up and manning it is how I'm earning my college internship credit, so if you could check it out it would be greatly appreciated :D

other art ▪️ buy my wares ▪️ zine bash
faq ⤵️
can i use your art for [personal thing]?
as long as it wasn't commissioned by someone else, you can use any of my art for your personal icon, profile pic, header, playlist cover, dnd home game, print and tape to your wall, etc etc. please credit/link back to me whenever possible if it's something posted on the internet
can i get a tattoo of your art?
again, for my personal non-commissioned art, sure! i'd appreciate it if you leave a kofi tip or buy a little something from my shop when you can. a shout out is also appreciated if you post a pic to show off the tattoo, partly for design credit and partly because i'd like to see it :)
are you open for commissions?
maybe 👍 please email [email protected] with "commission" in the subject line. tell me what you have in mind and i'll let you know if it's something i can do right now
will you restock [item]?
franklin leg and terror/erebus ship pillows: nah. i might do a new ship pillow eventually, but no immediate plans. feel free to yoink the ideas and make your own; they're not super original concepts lmao
polar explorer shirts: "all well" will have another preorder campaign (probably its last) in december 2024. "make history or die trying" is available through my redbubble (and as of nov '24 has a few still in stock in my etsy) but otherwise i have no plans to do another run
prints and stickers: will probably be restocked (shop updates are usually in april and november ish), and/or is available through my redbubble shop
how do you produce your merch?
prints: i use Catprint (US based) for all of my prints and have done for many years; they're great, lots of options, no minimums, and i highly recommend if you want to get into selling prints. and remember to take advantage of their paper sample pack and free print proofing!!
stickers: i've used Stickerapp (US based) several times; their minimum quantities are higher than i usually want but the prices aren't bad and the quality is nice. mostly now i use Zap! Creatives which has lower minimums and allows for multiple designs in one order, plus i'm already getting other items from them.
pins, charms: i use also Zap! Creatives (UK based) for this; as much as i'd love to produce everything this side of the pond i really haven't found anyone comparable in the US and i've been pretty happy with them.
pillowcases, lanyards, glasses cloths: i've done through a group order organized by another artist; dm me and i will hook you up with the mailing list :)
shirts: for the first couple runs of "make history" i had them made by Huntsville AL-based screenprinter Green Pea Press, who were great to work with and i highly recommend if you're in the area. ordering, storing, and shipping lots of shirts was a bit too much for my one-man-one-room business though so i started using Print Social (UK based) which runs pre-order campaigns and then prints and fulfills everything themselves. very easy to set up, and the shirts look nice!
packaging: i get basically all my mailers from ecoenclose, glassine paper from blick, and otherwise try to reuse brown paper/cardboard/etc for inner packaging as much as possible.
will you draw [fandom] again?
[shrug emoji] it could happen. i'm still fond of everything i've done fanart for in recent years, so there's always a chance i'll return to it if struck with ideas and motivation and energy at the right time
what happened to [various original story things]?
i'm tired dude. i haven't forgotten about them i'm just Tired
----
if you have a question or something to say, you can send a dm or ask here, although my response may be a little slow. for anything time-sensitive or otherwise very important, please email me at [email protected]

been thinking about branching out in my shop some maybe... i have the wiggle room to have a little bit of stuff manufactured right now instead of doing everything at home, but i'm still kinda hesitant to do it because the things i have made don't sell as well as the stuff i make myself (why?? who knows) and i really like making the stuff myself but some stuff i just can't make efficiently at home obviously. so, in addition to the stickers, buttons, and bookmarks i already have, what would you be interested in seeing? also gonna include some things i can make but don't usually because it takes some time
to be clear i'm not actually even considering all of these things, i kinda just listed all the stuff that i could think of LOL

Hello! I really like your art style and I want to one day support and buy some of your merch! the thing is I haven't gotten around to watching/reading a lot of the fandoms you cover (yet!), so I'd like to ask if you would ever do original merch? just as a suggestion I don't mean anything rude by it! Thanks!!!
hey anon!
I totally get ya, some of the fandoms I make merch for are niche and I understand 😭😭 WAHAHAHA. my taste is actually pretty eclectic, I like a lot of popular stuff too! it's just that I tend to like rooting for the underdog series that have less fanart........ (thanks for being interested in my art regardless of fandom that's like. the highest compliment?!)
I do have original merch!! let me ... showcase them to yall... hehe...
Tumblr media
The pins are from 2017, the stickers from 2022-now. I just don't post them, bc they're mostly for self indulgence/ don't really know how to post merch a lot of the time? (ive forgotten to post a lot of merch)/ gifts to friends/ for the few customers at cons who've asked if I have original merch. but if anyone's interested in these... to purchase 😳... by all means feel free to ask! (not the quicksand charm though I only have one bc it was a test print)
frankly, I don't think I'm popular enough with my OC art specifically to sell them right now. Originals are hard to market! It's easier to market fanart since people are already familiar with, and more importantly connect to, the characters and stories.
if you're asking if I'd ever draw like, original animal merch? like mascots i guess? on the other hand (and not OCs... LMAO) I don't know if I'm particularly interested, bc competition for that market is fierce. I don't tend to draw animals, so it'd be something I have to make a huge effort towards. or maybe I haven't found my niche yet!
for non-OC original merch, I took a huge gamble with these original enamel pins back in 2017! It was a fun experience but I went into the order with such little planning, and the girl design had a very last minute design, which I deeply regret. if I ever design original merch/enamel pins again I have to plan ahead... thanks for being interested, it's something I'll def think about!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ here are some pretty recent OC stickers I designed and haven't had the chance to print yet!

HII hello i love your products <3 Especially the phone chams and the pins,,, I'm unable to buy them myself but i would absolutely love to
How do you make em btw? do you have someone else do em for you? Do you do em yourself? I'd love to sell stuff like that too, but i'm unsure of how to start >_<"
you should totally do it!! it's nice to have something especially catered to ur tastes haha
for most of my stuff i (and many others lol) use vograce! they have a bunch of different kinds of merch, have sales pretty frequently, and very low minimum buy requirements. i've also had good customer service experiences and even though it can take a while for overseas shipping they are generally good about getting it in the mailing system quickly
for enamel pins, i've used vivipins. i've only used them twice, but no problems so far. enamel pins are probably the most you have to invest upfront since the minimum amount you have to buy is usually quite high
for stickers i often use sticker ninja, they give you extra on what you order, are very high quality, and the sample option is great if you don't want a huge bulk (and they still give you extras here too!!)
for prints i honestly just use my local walgreens! and for my test doujinshi i used my local staples! buttons and small postcards/prints and booklets (like the doujinshi) can also be fairly easy to find a local printer for as well ^^ (and it can be fairly cheap- for souyo zine i needed 200 of 2 postcard designs and got both for ~$50 from a local printer)
sidenote: one time i did try to diy my own shrink charms and they went very poorly LMAO but it was still fun to try- this was the tutorial i used and it probably works fine i am just v impatient sometimes
good luck to you on making things \o/

i put in an application for a 1 day art market at the mall 5 minutes from my house for September. Technically I don't need the money and the spot would be better served going to an actual artist who desperately needs money in these increasingly tough times, but I felt that this might be the only themed market that I actually have a background knowledge for, so I should at least try. I may get rejected anyway! Who knows and who cares!
But in the event I do get accepted, it's likely I won't make back the (rather expensive for the type of event) table cost, so I'm looking for ideas of what else to make just in case. I have my leftover merch, charms and small prints, from previous markets several years ago, and I'm making more button badges, already have a list of characters to draw for those. Unfortunately people don't actually like button badges much, or at least they don't really show off ita bags in this godforsaken country. I probably should make completely new stuff regardless of what happens, but I don't wanna invest in an overseas production that won't sell online afterwards. Tough choices...
Anyway, here's the list so far
old acrylic fanart charms
an enamel pin (original art)
2.25" button badges (fanart character portraits)
one off stickers from red bubble and small handmade ones
small and large fanart prints
random one off crafts like resin jewelry and scrunchies
In an ideal world, I would make new actually useful items for a wide audience plus a few one of a kind items. Like t-shirts or stickers (waterproof) plus uhh something with the embroidery machine or maybe clay or resin. But I don't wanna...

I need a side job for an online shop but I can't afford a printer to make stickers or art posters what are your suggestions of other craft things I could learn?
I thought about pins but I'm not sure how they're made.
this ask actually came at a funny time cause i am closing my etsy shop until further notice cause im not really interested in selling rn haha, but!!! i do have some ideas for you!!
clay pins! these can be really fun to make and i think theyre still popular! theres a lot of tutorials on youtube on how to make them, but youre gonna need white clay and paint (or colored polymer clay if you dont want to paint them), pin backings (you can get these at any craft store) and something to seal them (you can use mod podge or polymer clay glaze for this!) theres a lot of fun designs you can make for these and theyre cheaper than making enamel pins
painted wood things! if you are artistic and can paint stuff, get some mini wood circles/hearts and paint a design, then superglue on a pin backing, then boom its a pin! this is an alternative to clay pins if you dont want to deal with clay haha. i can find small wood pieces at any craft store for cheap and i have too many of them lying around lol
go to any store that does printing and print stuff if you dont have a printer! for awhile before i got my printer i would order printed stuff from staples for cheap. id look into this if you have a lot of ideas for art prints or zines, theres a lot of options!!
if you have some cash to spare, look into stickerapp!! they print die-cut stickers and sticker sheets, and they havent failed me yet, all their stuff turns out good and they have options for different quantities of stickers.
you may want to look into digital products if youre tech savvy! on etsy you can make good passive income from digital items like downloadable prints, digital stickers, desktop icons, templates, etc. this is kinda a hard market to get into cause theres a lot of competition, but theres a lot of different things you can do with digital products.
going back to clay cause its the most affordable thing i feel, you can make trinket dishes, charms for jewelry, keychains, figurines, etc. people always seem to be interested in little things like that, and i feel like clay, especially polymer clay can be a fun rabbit hole to dive down with all the different tutorials and things you can do with it out there :) air dry clay stuff is great too!
resin can be touchy for some people cause it can be messy and toxic if you dont have good ventilation, but i used to make shaker charms with molds i got for like 2 bucks off etsy as well as jewelry! check out some tutorials for this one if you'd like to get into this world, it can be fun!
if you want to get into button pin making, id check out badge-a-minit! they were my first intro to pin making, and you can get a starter kit for like $30 i think?? the price may have changed but thats what i paid for like 3 years ago lol
do you know how to crochet?? crochet plushies and even digital patterns are still super popular!! its fun and relaxing too if you want to get into it
overall these are the first things that popped into my head when it comes to crafty things to sell, i hope it was somewhat helpful ;_; if you'd like to really dive into the world of products and marketing for artists, i highly recommend checking out kelsey rodriguez on youtube!! she has lots of good advice for artists and just recently came out with a video specifically for products that artists can sell!

As someone who works in printing/manufacturing I want to give some input from the other side of the counter.
First off: there are a lot of print shops out there where you can get things made, there’s really no reason to use the same ones as other artists. For prints, posters, etc, any print shop will do, even Staples. They’ve got decent prices and fast turnaround times, usually. And most products can be picked up in store to avoid shipping costs.
Seriously: go to a local shop as often as you can, to avoid shipping costs. (Unless you can find someplace online cheaper, despite the shipping)
For T-shirts: screen printing shops are pretty common these days, so try to find a local one. Doesn’t have to be big. Most places use the same shirts (usually Gildan) and the same printing method. Keep in mind that for screen printing, each color is printed via a different screen, so the more colors in your design the more expensive it will be. Shops usually charge a “frame fee” for each color, around 40-80 dollars each. Anything more than 6 colors is kinda pushing it and anything more than 12 might not be possible. If you want a shirt that has a full color print or gradients, that’s not screen printing, that’s Direct to Garment (or the newer Direct to Film). Screen-printing shops may or may not have that available you’ll just need to ask around. There’s also sublimation, but that only works on light colored shirts so your design options are limited. Ask your screen-printer what your options are. No harm in shooting them an email with your design and asking if it’s printable.
Also screen print shops will not save the frames after the order is done- you’ll be paying that frame free each time your order so plan accordingly.
People don't really like wearing white shirts.
When ordering shirt sizes: DON’T just get 10 or each size S to XXL or whatever. Sizes are in a bell curve, so get, for example, 3 small, 5 medium, 8 large, 5 XL, 3 XXL.
Don’t try to buy your own shirts (or other materials) and bring it in to be printed- just don’t, please. Printers can get the same thing cheaper and at a consistent quality, so let them handle it. (Also if a print messes up we can just get another blank from the back room instead of of ruining your shirt)
CustomInk is good but tbh a lot of their stuff is outsourced to local screen printing shops. You might be able to cut out the middle man and get it cheaper at a local shop.
^all that t-shirt stuff also applies to tote bags
Also keep in mind the print on a t-shirt can go up to 12 in x 16 in usually.
For stickers, try to find a place that sells vinyl or banners, like a print shop or trophy shop. They might also do bulk stickers of good quality. If there isn’t a place like that locally, do research and find a store online.
Trophy shops are your friend! They often do a lot of different custom printing, so ask your local shop what they have available.
For buttons: try print shops or trophy shops. But honestly this one might be better to do at home, especially if you’re doing a lot of different little things. The materials are cheap, the prints can literally be made on a regular printer with regular paper, and a cheap button press costs about $100
For pins and acrylic charms: always order about 10% more than you need, especially if you’re ordering overseas. The industry has a 10% margin of error and not everyone does quality control. Any extras you get can be sold as B-grades or leftovers.
For plushies: I don’t know anything about plushies. Sorry, you’re on your own for those.
Buying in bulk is always cheaper, so plan accordingly. Get an idea of how many you want before walking into a store.
Pretty much everything prints at 300 dpi, which means if you want to print a 5 in x 7 art print, your image needs it be AT LEAST 1500x2100 pixels, or else it’ll come out pixelated and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
Also if something is going to be printed up to the edge of the material (like an art print) make sure there’s .25 inches of safe space around all the edges- things in that space could get cut off, so no important details like writing.
I don’t know how else to say this, but: KNOW WHAT YOU WANT BEFORE YOU ORDER. Have a design, know your size and material, know how many you want. CUSTOM printing means all these things change the price of the order and nothing can get started until you make these decisions.
Most shops will send you a mock-up (or “proof”) before printing, so keep and eye on your email and respond in a timely matter if you want things to be printed in a timely matter. Of course, any changes you make to your product during the process could slow things down, but that’s to be expected. Basically, if you make a dozen changes don’t get mad that stuff isn’t ready at the agreed time. (One or two changes are normal but please don’t do a whole bunch if you don’t have to)
Most places know what they’re doing and don’t want to bother with sending you a sample for something they’ve printed a thousand times (t-shirts, tote bags, acrylic charms, stickers). Look at their sample products and judge the quality of those. They’ll send a mock-up instead. Anything that isn’t just a printed blank is another story. Plushies, pins, and custom clothing (anything more complicated than a graphic tee), you’ll probably want a sample. Any good shop would recommend a sample if it’s necessary.
You DO have to do your own research. Your budget and location are going to determine what shop works for you. Just decide what you want, google it, and make your own decision based on their prices.
My last piece of advice: START SMALL. Do one stack of art prints, one stack of stickers, the smallest batch of pins you can do- test out the shop and the product before going all in and wasting your money. Don’t drop a ton of money and place a ton of orders unless you’ve tried a shop and are confident in their abilities.
would anyone be interested if I made a breakdown post of reasons why merch artists don't share their manufacturers? it's oversimplified as "artists are just gatekeeping" in part because I think there's just not a lot of awareness that it's a significantly more complex situation and involves some level of risk compared to sharing simpler resources such as brushes
artists also don't tend to explain beyond "sorry, I don't share my manufacturers" (for good reason, they're not going to write an essay to answer a quick question) but maybe diving into the details will help people understand why so many merch artists are protective of their manufacturers and will not share with strangers

mmm was thinking of sellin fan merch recently since i loved enamel pins so much, maybe i should make my own pins too stickers, acrylic charms, n prints too but oughh,,,,, handling that stuff sounds so scary,,, having to make sure all my stuff gets to customers esp if theyre international,,, handling emails....
ourgh not to mention yknow, figure out how to sell the fan merch while staying under the radar would it be better to, if i decide to actually go through with this one day, id do it through kickstarter n have my campaign mix the fan merch alongside the original concepts for merch i had in mind? I saw some ks campaigns like that
or maybe wait for like a rlly long time to get a sizable audience that i actually have enough money to just make the stuff myself just make all that stuff in rlly small batches, like 30 or so
Maybe i should do con boothing n just change my main sona into a tv head so i can have smth that better protects my identity while i go out to sell at cons sdsdghsdgk since my identity is what im rlly scared of showin to ppl
but what if that cant happen bc all the fan merch i wanna make is like....... for rlly small or currently dead fandoms sdhgjsdggf sorry im just musin to myself some thoughts

Thank you to everyone who responded to the merch form! So far, the general interest is in Minecraft which gives me a lot to work with! And I also have a ton of ideas for it already, so I’m really glad I have an interest in that.
Everyone seems to be interested in Pins and Charms the most which I’m not entirely surprised about, but that’s really neat considering they might be a bit more along the expensive side. When it comes to Pins and Charms, I really want to do my best to make them look unique and very appealing so don’t worry, you’d be getting your money’s worth :)
When it comes to commissioning merch, I’m unsure on how to price it but I would honestly try to make it even with the average prices I’m going to be setting non-commissioned merch at? Depends what the commission is, of course, but if charms usually ran for $10 then I guess the commissioned charm could be that or maybe a tiny bit more. I don’t know how money works! But this is practically free game, so treat this like your average commission and send me anything you want! I know I’ve wanted to see my oc on a charm for years now, so feel free to send me all your characters!! (We can figure out if purchasing individual charms rather than a bulk can work out later ;>)
I’m going to be getting help from my parents for this, so it might be a long or quick process considering how money and time looks! I’ve also just started school back up and my classes overall look like just a bunch of reading and essay writing, so gross! But also maybe I can not worry as much unless writing proves to be a challenge along with research.
Again, thank you to everyone who filled the form out and please spread it if you can!
