A bit more of a personal #MugshotMonday post today, featuring this lovely denby green cup that my parents got as a wedding present as part of a crockery set, nearly all of which I've now stolen because I love the colour and style of it. (Don't worry they have plenty of different sets that they prefer using! These were up in the attic). . It was my mother-in-law who pointed out that we'd chosen nearly the same colour of kitchen tiles, which was indeed just a happy coincidence. For those who don't know, the hubby and I completely redid a lot of the house when we first moved here last year (I shared lots of renovation updates during the process so you can check out those posts further down in my profile), and the kitchen was definitely the biggest job. We ripped everything out and built it all back up from scratch, and I'm so happy with the result. . There's something very satisfying about creating your own space, and being able to adapt it to your exact wishes. Back in early prehistory, it's generally assumed that houses would have been rebuilt on a fairly regular basis. In more nomadic societies of course this is self-evident, but even when people started settling more permanently, the materials being used for construction meant that they wouldn't last for multiple years without needing renovation. I like to imagine that each rebuild brought with it new little personalisations from each family member. Added shelves, extra hooks, that kind of thing! . Starting is the hardest thing - be it rowing an ocean, making a change or trying something preceived as hard. This is my start. - Challenges are whatever you make them, I made a set of rules up for my ocean row that I thought I would be impressed by if others had done it. The construction of the boat was one the the greatest and hardest projects I've done and now I want to let othets with similar dreams access the knowledge and methods to do the same. - Building an ocean rowing boat might just be the best piece of training you can do to row an ocean. Before the Build Out

Let me tell you, it's been a crazy journey to get to where we are at!  Our decision to go full out and build a lab was actually kind of last minute, sort of rash, and all happened within one month. This past month. We feel empowered to however, by our community, and by the people we surround ourselves with especially. I want to be in a position to help heal myself, to work for myself, and empower others through the things I learn on this journey. Starting with the first process: what is needed to make and launch a business?!

Questions to Ask Yourself

Is doing this everyday going to feel good? Make you happy? Give you work and job satisfaction?

While the first two questions could be considerably easy - sometimes you cannot completely know how much work something really means until you do it - If it is something you are passionate about, really, the answers should come automatic. Love what it would mean? Or LOVE actually doing it?? What has been your true hands on experience doing what you are looking to turn into a career? Now, can you take that to the limit- picking up all the pieces it would entail to create a system and life around it? Most things we are truly passionate about, this is never a problem. The problem we have faced have stemmed from what we believe we lack in business knowledge itself, and the looming other questions...

Can I make enough money to sustain the business? 

Will I be able to make enough money in the future to sustain myself? 

While my intention is to write out what we are doing personally -  it can be an outline for others - it is by far just one way of so many out there. It’s the basic idea of what to consider question by question. Use these to, and write your answers down after some thought.

What is the overhead for labor and expenses monthly for your business? 

What ends up being the profit margin of your product(s)? 

And the lastly, one question that is hard to ask but needed:

Can you afford to add those month to month business costs to your current personal budget of monthly expenses, if you do not succeed to produce an adequate income from the business, to cover the costs of running said business?

Can you Measure Success?

I had to sit down one day, and really ask myself what success meant for me personally. I had to put an understanding to what I have been taught success means to society, or what I had been led to believe in my lifetime. I needed to know, by writing it down or doing verbal exercises, to express what I thought it looked like, so I could understand how, if it is even possible, to measure our success. 

I don’t think it’s numbers. You can research a market all day, create your own production estimates with price points, and understand how much of something you need to create and sell, to understand how to break even, or even profit.

But those are just estimates..even guidelines-  more often than not stuff doesn’t just go how you plan it on paper. Markets change, production can be less than what you thought it may be- in the case of growing mushrooms, maybe a whole batch gets contaminated. Or maybe you had one platform to sell on, and suddenly you have to try a completely new one? 

Working for yourself can be extremely hard- and not just the monetary risk. You have to have the self discipline to set your own hours and actually stick to them. To set deadlines and make sure it gets done!

But it is also extremely rewarding when you understand what your own version of success means.

For me, it is an understanding of my effect on the world around me. 

Am I helping to spread awareness and/or motivation? 

Am I helping to educate people? Especially young minds?

Am I able to extend my knowledge of how mushrooms are able to treat health issue (such as my own) through this work? 

Is what I am doing sustainable -clean green- producing no waste, and  even helping clean up waste? (The mushroom growing industry is such a complimentary one since it can use the waste and byproducts of others)
