Regarding our recent post exchange about Black men not supporting Black women – you might be interested in a mini TV series “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker” (available on Netflix). It centers around the life of a Black hair care pioneer. It features lines such as “The Negro man needs to be lifted first (before the Negro woman)” and “Massa may have cursed me with a daughter, but you got good hair and light, bright skin!”. Plot points include a rivalry between a Black woman and a Biracial woman, as well as a lesbian relationship (which was apparently made up by the creators for additional drama). The series was heavily criticized for historical inaccuracies and artistic license, but I personally enjoyed it. If nothing else, it taught me who Madam C.J. Walker was, for which I am glad. I thought it might be worth mentioning on your blog.
That's...interesting. I will definitely check it out as soon as I watch the movie "The Old Guard".
I know of Madame C.J. Walker and am not in the least bit surprised by anything I'm reading here! It truly is depressing!

Currently Watching Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame CJ Walker...
This is just what I needed in all the mess going on in this world.  It’s light, not overly-respectable, my goodness y’all... I have been waiting for something lighthearted and sweet in period about black folks.   Yes, it’s *still* a biopic... But I use that term as loosely as the title. The editing is a bit strange at times, but there is a style and a mood to this that I like. It feels like that light Hallmark production with black folks that I’ve been wanting. Octavia Spencer as per usual is carrying this with her charisma and acting skills. Also love that they did tackle colorism in this. This is a rec.

So I watched Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker *no spoilers
Allot of the show is probably fiction, cause that’s how Hollywood works. But let me tell you, if you haven’t seen it please go and watch it. It is such a good show with a great message. I felt so inspired after watching it. A strong black woman who knew what she wanted and didn’t aplogize for it. Loved it.

“Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace” Premieres on Lifetime TV September 6 at 7pm CT
Tumblr media
By Naomi Richard
Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace explores what really happened inside the palace that drove Harry and Meghan to leave everything behind, so they could build a future for themselves and their son Archie, according to Lifetime TV. The movie will detail Meghan's growing isolation and sadness, and their disappointment that "The Firm" was not defending them against the press's attacks. It will show Harry’s fear that history would repeat itself and he would not be able to protect his wife and son from the same forces that may have contributed to his mother’s untimely death. Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palacewill examine the dynamics between Will and Harry, Kate and Meghan, and Harry with Will and Charles, which led to the ultimate break from the royal ties.
Actors Jordan Dean and Sydney Morton were chosen to play Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex; and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, respectively.
Jordan Dean recurred as “Jake Campbell” in the second and final season of Marvel’s The Punisher on Netflix and recurred as “Ludlow Fowler” in Amazon’s period drama series Z: The Beginning of Everything. His additional television work includes HBO’s High Maintenance, USA’s Golden Globe-nominated series The Sinner, CBS’s Bull, and USA’s Royal Pains. His recent Broadway stage work includes Macbeth, directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, American Psycho (with his ‘Harry & Meghan’ co-star Sydney Morton) directed by Rupert Goold, and Shows for Days where he worked opposite Patti Lupone and Michael Urie.
Sydney Morton’s appeared on television including two seasons of Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, she also co-starred opposite Octavia Spencer in Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker both on Netflix and recently began recurring as “Alex” on NBC's Manifest. On Broadway she appeared in the original companies of Memphis, Evita, Motown the Musical, The Secret of My Success (pre-Broadway), as well as the National Tour of Flashdance.
In an open and candid conversation about the upcoming film, Morton and Dean were very transparent. “Racism is touched on in the film, as it shaped Harry and Meghan’s experiences and contributed to their decision to leave the palace. They encountered serious obstacles and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, had faced tragedies and loss openly. All these emotions helped mold the persons we now portray,” according to Dean.

“It’s really hard to play someone so famous and still alive. There was trauma involved in their decisions, and we approached it carefully. We had to be careful. We studied them for quite some time, and particularly their recent interview with Oprah. It gave us even more insight into their emotions and their decision process in leaving the palace,” commented Morton.
Interestingly, the chemistry and romance between the two came organically. They had known each other prior to accepting the Lifetime TV roles because of their prior experience working together working on Broadway. Against that backdrop, they become very respectful of each other and recognized the talent and level of excellence exemplified in each other’s work. “We were able to show affection, tenderness and protection with ease,” explained Jordan.
When asked about their wardrobe selections, they described the process as somewhat stressful. The Royals have such good taste in clothes and they helped to form the story being told. They had some latitude in their choices, but strove to remain true to the style of Harry and Meghan.
What a delightful experience to spend time with both actors, who portray a couple that’s perceived almost as larger than life. Tune in and watch the magic on Lifetime, airing September 6 at 7pm CT.

it bothers me that in “self made: the inspired by the life of madam cj walker”, they fictionalised and made up a bunch of things. if you’re making a show to tell a true story, especially a story about real black women that were alive in the early 1900s, don’t make shit up in between and spread misinformation!!! annie malone (addie munroe in the show) was not a biracial woman nor was she light-skinned, nor did her rivalry with madam cj walker have anything to do with colourism. they could’ve commented on colourism without villainising a black woman and turning her into this jealous & colourist biracial lightskin,,, and the fact that they thought it was in any way appropriate to make false claims on the character of annie malone without clarifying that most of their depiction of her was made up bs for entertainment purposes is quite gross.

I have a series that focuses in on mental health, death and other angst triggers that I work on. It’s like a DIY Councellor because everything worrying me just kinda projects onto the characters. Check my Onerous Cimmerian tag if you’re curious
I’ve got my books and my mum and I have been watching Netflix series about British royalty, POC history and Judaism.
if anyone wants to know how im going
i have been writing a script for a short film while listening to either welcome to nightvale or mumbo jumbo doing some hermitcraft stuff. i am full of rage at the Australian government, particualrily Dan Tehan and Scott Morison, and I know way to much about how teachers in australia are paid. ask me questions im going insane

Quarantine Questionnaire!
I was tagged by both @galadrieljones and @thevikingwoman to fill this out!
Are you staying home from work or school?
Not technically. I did work from home, but I got furloughed yesterday morning and am currently out of a job until August, unless I happen to find something before then.
If you’re staying home, who’s with you?
My husband is working from home these days, so most mornings we mosey into the office and sit at our desks and do work. He’s in sales, so he’s working on stuff to do while people aren’t buying much, and now that I don’t have a job, I’m working on fics and taking online classes because my boss bought me a year pass to Coursera a couple months ago and I’m going to make the most of it.
Are you a homebody?
Absolutely. I haven’t hit cabin fever yet.
An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled.
Hmm, do future paychecks count? Honestly, nothing I’ve been looking forward to is something in person that would get canceled. The next big thing is a wedding shower at the end of April and that wedding in May. I assume both things will still be on.
What movies have you watched recently? What shows are you watching?
My husband and I are starting a Marvel marathon tonight since we don’t have much else to do. We’re about twenty minutes into Iron Man right now.
I watched Tiger King on Monday and started Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker on Tuesday, but I’m still in the first episode.
I’m listening to This Podcast Will Kill you and also Radium Girls, which has the world’s worst narrator. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to finish it.
I’m playing Far Cry 5 on the PS4 for the first time so I can get all my perks back, and also so I can play with @troyebakers and @vvitchofhemwick at some point. I do have a huge stack of games to get through, because I have some I got for Christmas and some I got on sale last week.
What music are you listening to?
When I need music instead of something else, I’ve been listening to my playlist for Emma Nguyen.
What are you doing for self care?
I’m making sure I take time to do things I enjoy (bubble baths, writing, reading fic again, etc), spending quality time with my husband instead of just silently sitting and watching TV for hours, and making sure I don’t neglect basic needs while joblessness threatens to pull me into a pit of despair (this isn’t my first time losing employment; I know what can happen). Washing my face, brushing my teeth, putting on clean clothes, taking showers? All things I remind myself to do daily/twice a day, because this is all going to be fine, and I’m going to make it be fine through sheer force of will.
ETA: I painted my nails this morning!
