Beach Episode

It had been a long time since the Soul Guardians had a day off and they were excited to use it. There was still a long fight ahead, but even heroes deserve a day off! And what better way to enjoy a day off than to have some fun in the sun.

A car, a van, and a motorbike arrive at the beach parking lot just before 8 a.m. Riley and Zena hop off their bike and pack their motorsuits into Zena’s backpack. Riley tapped her foot, hoping the tent would be set up soon. Zena smeared sunscreen on her fair-skinned lover’s face. She grinned as Riley squirmed at the cold touch.

As soon as Bomani unlocked the car doors, James and Enya sprung out of the car and dashed towards the beach, disregarding the fact they were supposed to help carry things with everyone else. Bomani sighed and grabbed both her share of things to carry, which was a lot already given she was over 6 ft and 200 pounds, but also James and Enya’s because what mattered to her was that the kids were having fun. Kat followed soon after wearing her giant black hat and sunglasses. She headed straight for the tiki bar for a cold drink that would help her cope with the fact her icy body was not meant to be in the heat.

As Nile and Selena got out of the van they were chatting each other’s ears off about nothing in particular. JJ opened the door and started pulling out the ramp for Maki’s wheelchair. Once Maki’s wheelchair had made it to the ground, JJ went and grabbed the special beach wheelchair they had bought just for today. He gently scooped her up and placed her on this big-wheeled device. She thanked JJ and expressed her excitement that she could attend with everyone else.

By the time everyone had made it to the beach, James and Enya, whose gloves were abandoned in the sand, were already chasing each other in the water. Bomani quickly set up the tent and then dived in the water, ready to cause chaos for the two teenagers. Riley and Kat immediately placed themselves under the tent and decided that snarkily protesting the sun and heat was the best way to enjoy themselves. Selena on the other hand adored the sun, it could do her no harm since she could just heal any burns she got. She laid in the sunniest spot in her bikini, knowing she could take a sun nap without any regrets.

JJ and Nile eyes dug into each other as Nile prepared her serve of the volleyball. JJ had the height advantage but Nile had determination, and to her, that was enough.

Maki watched her friends all play and wished there was more she could do. She watched Riley braid Zena’s hair carefully and Kat sip on her fancy cocktail. She saw Bomani let Enya and James climb onto her shoulders just to throw them as far as she could. And as Selena peacefully slept, Nile was desperately fighting to win a volleyball game she was clearly losing.

Maki could see the waves crashing onto her feet but she couldn’t feel a thing. She thought back to just a couple years prior, when she could’ve been playing too. But she knew her sacrifice was worth it, because without it, none of them would be here smiling today. Things were so different from the beginning, and yet they still had so far to go.

Not all of them would return to this beach again, but for those who did, this peaceful day danced in their memories.

I can give a couple examples. Not all of these bothered me, to be fair, this is jost something that comes to mind, some for being recent, some of which I’ve been recently reminded of and some I like.

Most of the action movies where the hero gets the heroine I’ve just forgotten

Oppenheimer. In a movie with tiny tiny screen time for women, I did not expect to see a scene where the main character has a naked chick banging him in a room with 5 or so old men

Shape of water. A mute girl meets a sea monster. A love story takes place. Admittedly this may not belong in here because it was marketed as a romance movie, so I won’t include others like it.

Any Bond movie I’ve ever watched has a major sex and/or romance plot, but I almost walked out from the newest (No time to die) because it was essentially all romantic plot tumor, where an ex agent chases his ex and wants to play husband and daddy.

Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor’s ex gets sick and meets Thor. Much of the plot is them circling each other. Valkyrie misses her dead lover.

Guardians of the Galaxy 1, 2 and 3. Trilogy of Quinn’s relationship with that green lady

Deadpool 1. boy meets a girl, boy gets sick, boy gets healed but horribly ugly, boy wants to find cure to return to his girl, no cure is found but boy can return to his girl

Deadpool 2. boy is in love with his girl but the girl dies. Boy gets really depressed and a plot-like thing happens. The dead girl is seen again, can’t remember if she was brought back to life or what it was about.

28 days later. Some sexual slavery involved. Jim’s and Selena’s romantic relationship as a major plot component

The Walking dead. Considering that zombies are trying to eat everyone, there’s surprisingly much drama with Rick/his wife/Shane drama and Maggie and whatever her husband was called, just to give a couple examples.

Supernatural. Romance and sex were there from the beginning but angels and some other characters felt like they were included for shipping and romance, and wtf is going on in the latter seasons

House. House/Cuddy, all Wilson’s women. House’s fake wife. Thirteen/Foreman.

The Big Bang Theory. Amy and Sheldon especially bug me

Lexx. Everyone is lusting after everyone, except Kai. Although this may be a lot like Shape of water in this list – the sex/romance and innuendo are much of the point, so in that sense Lexx probably shouldn’t be here.

Merlin. Arthur and Gwen. Very, very awkward relationship development that took ages in screen time.

Peaky Blinders. Tommy starts with a deliciously traumatized, opium-smoking veteran who shows no interest in women, men or farm animals. Then suddenly there are Grace, May and Lizzy and the whole thing is mostly run by Tommy’s dick.

Archer, but that’s kind of Lexx of animation, so.

Legend of Korra. Other artistic choices aside (wtf were you thinking, writers?), what is this Korra/Mako/Asami love triangle? I wanted to watch magic and air bisons.

Many if not most Disney animations rely heavily on romantic plots. Too much work to go through, but let’s say Lion King. Simba kicks himself out and hangs with some cool, probably gay dudes until he meets Nala, falls in love, kicks some hyena ass and has has cubs with the love of his life.

“The summer before I moved from Hawai’i. I think I was thirteen or maybe fourteen, Lilo was just a toddler, but my parents decided we were going to make the most of our time on the Island that we had left, because we didn’t know when we would be moving back. I think they had plans to, eventually, but... y’know. I remember the last day of summer. We went to the beach, and we took Lilo out on the waves for the first time. We just paddled out, the waves weren’t very high by that time, but she loved it. We had a barbecue by the water and stayed out until the tide came in, and then we watched the stars from the back of dad’s old truck. One of the pictures we took that day is still framed in the hallway now.”

“I haven’t felt at home since my parents died. I sometimes dream that I’ll make a trip back to Hawai’i one day, and I’ll find them there, waiting in our old home for us.”

Faith the head rabbit:"Do you have any kindred here? Maybe they are looking for you."

Donut:"That is strange...and no, i don't have any relative unless it's from one of my children?"

Le souris bonbon neige:" Wait, you are a mother?!"

Amstran the moon dancer:"Isn't it obviously?"

Donut:"No, it can't be!"

Nishya the dream cat:"What is wrong, Donut, why are you shaking?"

Donut:"They took my children and put them in jail... This letter is from one of my babies, i know their handwriting, they were taken..."

Luna the moon demon:"We need a plan, someone has to stay here so it won't be suspicious and the others will go with Donut, we also need backup in cause they follow us here, any suggestions?"

Amstran the moon dancer:"Here what will do, Nishya the dream cat, Sky Coeur the detective and Selena the trophy ice skater will stay here at the motel, Luna the moon demon you will be our backup, we will meet with you at the half way, the rest of us enters the dungeon: Donut, Le souris bonbon neige and Faith the head rabbit will take the children while me and Hester the photo marksmen will take the guardians down."

Amstran the moon dancer:"Donut, where are you going? It's still raining and dark out side. Come in, closer to the fire before you catch a cold!"

Donut:"I have to rescue my children, i can feel them near by... In the dungeon , they are scared. This is all my fault, i should have taken care of them, what kind of a mother am I?"

Amstran the moon dancer:"You are a wonderful mother, who is concern about her kids, it's not your fault... We will get them back, don't worry!"

Guardian 1: "Look at those pitifully creatures so small and worthless!"

Guardian 2:"Leave them, they are not worthy of our time, we have strict order!"

Guardian 3:" He is right, where is your mother, you piece of... Where is she hiding?"

Faith the head rabbit :"Are you alright? You look like you are in pain!"

Hester the photo marksmen:"Drink some water, it will help you ease the pain!"

Donut:" I'm alright just let's continue with our journey, they have made a big mistake taken my children!"

Donut:" They don't really have a name, i call them the candy marshmallow babies, they are so cute and harmless...I can't even think why someone would want to hurt them, because of me..."

Looking back on 2019 I decided to list a handful of political / alternative news websites rather than films, albums or books. In the UK the corporate media stooped to shocking new lows during our recent General Election campaign. Such dirty tactics are to be expected of conglomerates owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and his fellow right wing billionaires but this time around, previously ‘liberal’ outlets such as the BBC and Guardian also fully participated in the outrageous lies, smears and character assassination against the leader of the opposition Labour Party. The British population were now being forced fed the Establishment’s propaganda du jour from every possible direction. Personally I try to gather my information from as many alternative outlets as possible to contrast with the 24 hour corporate brainwashing we’re subjected to these days. I’ve listed just five sites from the dozens I regularly visit and although I certainly don’t agree with everything expressed on these sites I do feel that it essential that in supposed free and democratic societies we are at least exposed to a variety of viewpoints and opinions - rather than being trapped inside social media echo chambers in an Internet that is increasingly controlled and censored by sophisticated algorithms and where politically correct digital lynch mobs accuse anyone with an opinion that contradicts the official narrative of being a Russian agent! Anyway, a Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping 2020 sets the new decade off in roaring style!

2019 was far from my favorite year. Regardless, I managed to release not one, but two new double albums by The Flying Luttenbachers (as well as two European tours with the unit) in addition to the usual slew of improvised music gigs and releases, and co-ordinating and producing an archival release of vintage NYC weirdness (Ozone). I also rocked Mexico City with Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, played a ridiculous gig with Encenathrakh, and disbanded Cellular Chaos (for now, at least).

When I become obsessed (or re-obsessed with something), it usually leads to a ton of proselytizing Facebook status posts. Combing my 2019 posts, it seems that my musical obsessions this year weren't very highbrow. Ha ha ha. Yes, I'm super into Xenakis, Cecil Taylor and whatever else, but dumber music can supply great creature comfort, and I guess I needed that in large amounts, so that's what it was. Sometimes badass modernists have to take time out to stay in bed all day and read comics because it's a hard cold world out there.

Annabeth woke up the next morning feeling like somebody had hit her in the head with a sledgehammer. Her head was pounding. She groaned and rolled over to check the time and sitting there on her bedside table was a bottle of aspirin and a glass of water. Left there by what must’ve been a guardian angel. And she suspected that that angel’s name was Percy Jackson.

She popped some pills and downed the glass of water before tearing herself out of bed and heading towards the kitchen/living room. There, standing at the stove, was Percy. He must’ve heard her come in because he turned and gave her a small smile.

“So?” he asked. “How’s the life of the party this morning.” Annabeth groaned and fell back onto the couch.

“How bad was I?” she asked miserably.

“Honestly, you’re a fun drunk. It’s like this wild side of you is let loose when you have a gallon of alcohol in you.” Annabeth groaned again.

Percy handed Annabeth a cup of coffee, which she took gratefully before sitting down on the opposite end of the couch. They sat in silence.

This is nice Annabeth thought. Comfortable. And deep down, some part of her should’ve been panicking or a voice at the back of her head telling to ‘get out’ or ‘stop, you can’t let anyone close.’ But that almost permanent feeling wasn’t there, and she couldn’t help but think that she could get used to this.

She looked over at Percy, who was quietly drinking his coffee while looking out the window. Annabeth had known from the moment she saw him that he was handsome, but she hadn’t noticed how beautiful he was. His eyes sparkled like the sun’s reflection on a clear sea. He had sun-freckles along his nose, which was odd considering he grew up in New York City. His hair was a bit too long and he needed a haircut, but she couldn’t help wondering if it felt as soft as it looked. She hadn’t realised Percy was looking back at her, a soft smile playing at his lips.

“Thank you,” Annabeth said. “For taking care of me last night.”

Percy nudged her with his foot. “What are friends for.”

Annabeth let out a small chuckle and looked back at Percy. He looked conflicted, like he wanted to say something. Just when he opened his mouth a loud knocking came from the door. Bot Annabeth and Percy’s heads flew around to look at the door. Percy looked at Annabeth raising an eyebrow as if asking are you expecting anyone? Annabeth shrugged back in answer.

When Percy opened the door, Piper came storming in. She didn’t even glance at Percy before rushing past him. “I slept with him.” She announced.

Annabeth mouth dropped open. She wanted to say something, but she was speechless. She saw Percy in a similar situation out of the corner of her eye. When she finally found her voice, she asked “Who?”

“Jason,” Piper said in a small voice.

“You slept with Jason!” Annabeth exclaimed. “What happened to the ‘I’m going to take it slow’?”

Piper sighed defeated. “I don’t know, it just kind of happened and we were both drunk and when you and Percy left, I just danced with him and one thing led to another and-”

“Dot, dot, dot?” Annabeth asked.

“Exactly.”

“Okay, so let me get this straight. You slept with Jason last night,” Piper nodded. “and you stayed the night?” Piper nodded. “and you really like him?” Piper nodded. “Then what the fuck are you doing here with me and Percy and not with him?”

Piper sighed again, “He had an exam he couldn’t miss, or at least that’s what he told me. Oh my god, what if he didn’t have an exam, what if he just didn’t like me and thought it was a mistake and never wants to see me again. What if-”

Piper was cut off from a close mental breakdown by Percy who said, “This is Jason Grace we’re talking about right?”

Piper looked shocked to see Percy, probably haven forgotten he existed but nodded all the same.

“Then he wasn’t lying, he really does have an exam.”

Piper didn’t look convinced. “How do you know?”

“He’s in the same class as my friend Frank, plus I’ve known Jason for like 3 years. Rival high schools. The exam is like half of their half-term grade, I’m surprised he went out last night, that’s not like Jason. The only time he really goes out is with friends or this one time when he was trying to impress this gir-” Percy stopped talking. “He wasn’t lying.”

Piper now had the biggest smile on her face. She wiped her tears and stood up. “All right, I’m done crying in your living room now.”

Annabeth caught her hand as she began to move away. “You sure your okay?” Piper gave her hand a small squeeze. “I am now, thanks for listening to me rant but I’m done now, and I desperately need a shower. I’ll see you later?”

Annabeth nodded and Piper left. When the door closed Percy looked at Annabeth. “That was-”

“Chaotic?” Annabeth offered.

“Yes, chaotic. That was chaotic.”

“That’s Piper,” Annabeth said fondly. She got up, “I need a shower, you going to be here when I come out?” Annabeth doesn’t know why she asked really, she just did.

Percy smiled, “Where else would I be?” he said cheekily.

Annabeth gave him a playful slap on the shoulder and went towards the bathroom to shower.

The weeks between Halloween and Christmas flew by. Grover came home not long after the party. Percy and Grover both went home for Thanksgiving, while Annabeth spent hers with Piper in her apartment. All in all, it wasn’t that bad of a day.

It also felt that something had changer between Percy and her. They were closer than ever; she’d even go as far as calling him one of her best friends. The two of them would stay up late and watch movies or sometimes just talk about nothing in particular.

One time they had ended up talking about what would happen if there was a zombie apocalypse. The next morning Grover had found the two of them passed out together on the couch.

Annabeth had gotten the call, a week before her finals began. She had been expecting the call and shouldn’t have been upset or surprised with its contents. Her dad was bringing her stepmom and stepbrothers to Hawaii for Christmas this year, so they won’t be home. ‘I hope to see you at New Year,’ her dad said. Not even an invitation. Typical.

That day Percy found her standing in the kitchen, a single tear rolling down her cheek.

“Hey,” he had said softly. “Are you okay?”

And he had asked it so softly that she had just broke down then and there. He had come over and wrapped his arms around her. Gently smoothing her hair and telling her that ‘everything will be alright,’ and that ‘you don’t have to talk about it but I’m here if you want to.’

It had taken Annabeth maybe five minutes to compose herself. She wiped her eyes, thanked Percy and left him in the kitchen, not telling him anything, no matter how much she wanted to because she didn’t want him to look at her with pity. Didn’t want him to think about how much of a burden she must be if her own family didn’t want her.

The call she didn’t expect though came two days before Christmas. Grover had already gone home for the holidays with Juniper, so it was just Percy and her left. Percy was leaving for home tomorrow after his last exam and Annabeth was spending Christmas with Piper in her dad’s log cabin up in Montana. They were also leaving tomorrow and coming back on the 29th so Piper can spend the New Year with Jason, who she was now dating.

She was sitting at the kitchen counter, studying her notes when the call came in. She looked at the number ID. She let herself have a moment of confusion before picking up the phone.

“Mom?” she asked.

Percy who was sitting on the couch, doing his own studying looked over to her in a silent question if he should leave. Annabeth shook her head, so he went back to his books.

“Annabeth, I was wondering if you had any plans for the New Year?”

This shocked Annabeth. She hadn’t heard from her mother in almost two years and here she was asking if she had any New Years plans as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

“Hello, Annabeth. Are you there?” her mother asked impatiently.

“Oh um, no I don’t.”

“Great, I’m hosting a ball for many of my clients and acquaintances and I think that this would be a very good opportunity for you to get your name out there. I’ll email you on the address and I assume you will want to bring someone, so I’ll send you the tickets. I’ll also pay for your plane tickets and hotel. I’ve got to go now but I’ll see you at New Year.” And without waiting for a reply, her mother hung up.

She doesn’t know how long she stood there, looking at her phone. It must’ve been longer than she thought because Percy was suddenly opposite her asking if everything was alright.

“Hypothetically,” she said. “What would you do if your mother, who you haven’t heard from in almost two years, just offered to fly you and a friend to a ball, that could be a really good opportunity to better your future career, and pay for everything.” She looked at Percy’s face.

“Well,” he said slowly. “Hypothetically, it sounds like this mother is trying to make an effort,” Annabeth must’ve made a face at that because Percy then added, “I think that this person should go, if not to make up with their mother then to help their career because you never know when an opportunity like this may arise again.”

Annabeth thought about this for a moment. “Your right,” she said. “I don’t have to actually make up with my mother, I just have to be civil with her for a couple of days and I can make incredible connections if I go.”

“Thank you,” she said to Percy. He just waved her off and went back to his work.

Annabeth tried to focus on her studies but couldn’t help thinking about all the things that could go bad. She tried to think of who to bring. Piper was with Jason, Thalia was in Europe, Selena was spending her first New Year with Charles, Malcom might be there, she thought, she prayed. But that’s a risk she didn’t want to take.

“Hey,” she asked. “Do you have any plans for New Years?”

Percy looked at her curiously. “Not yet, why?”

“Because I don’t think I can face my mother alone.”

Realizing what she was asking Annabeth quickly scurried over to his side and said. “Look I know you probably can think of millions if better things to do during New Years than spend it at a ball with obnoxious, rich people but you’d really be doing me a solid. And everything is paid for, the plane, the hotel, I’m sure I can even get my mom to buy you a new tux, just please say yes.”

Percy thought about it for a minute. He sighed and smiled at her. “When do we leave?”

Annabeth was so happy she could kiss him. In fact, that is exactly what she did. She placed a quick peck to his cheek. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! Oh my god, you are an angel Percy Jackson.” She said wrapping her arms around him.

Percy just laughed and hugged her back.

pls talk more about the high school dance club au im fuckibgn begging

Hhnnnrgh get ready for old art in this post because I’m not redrawing all this shit right now.

The official name for it is High School Dance Club AU, or HSDC. So basically, pretty much all of this takes place in the same high school, where the Nohr and Hoshido families both attended. The Nohrian family make up the foundation for the school’s Classical Dance Club, while the Hoshidans make up the foundation for the Modern Dance Club. They, but mostly the club presidents Xander and Ryoma, disagree on dance styles.

Xander doesn’t recognize modern dance as an art form, and thinks only classic styles like waltzing are worth anything. Ryoma thinks Xander has a big stick up his ass and he needs to lighten up, and that modern dance is a valid art form and in fact is harder because it usually involving singing AND dancing. The club rivalry is pretty intense and neither side will get over themselves about it.

(Undercut cause this is gonna get long):

(I’ll just talk about Nohr mostly since they’re the only sketches I have right now)

Xander is the president of the Classical Dance club, and a senior. He started the club, and he’s the eldest of the four Nohrian siblings. He’s mostly the one keeping the rivalry with Ryoma going, ever since his father Garon made an offhanded comment about Sumeragi being “uncivilized” (he’s not, he’s just a better father than Garon is), and since Garon keeps pushing the pressure of continuing the family company unto Xander, he’s just mimicking his father’s viewpoints. That’s also he wears a full suit everyday, despite having no real reason for it. He does care a lot about his siblings, but he’s kinda just....awkward. He’s like an early millennial, but he has no social media presence (though he frequently shows up in the background of his sibling’s social media), and therefore doesn’t understand memes.

Camilla is the second eldest and also a senior. She wears leather jackets and rides a motorcycle despite Xander’s protests. Since Garon isn’t a very good dad and is hardly home, she’s taken up role as the defacto mother of her siblings. She’s closer with Leo and Elise because of it, and also because she actually has social media so she actually understands memes. She’s Vice President of the dance club, and maintains the rivalry for appearances but she and the two younger siblings don’t really care too much. She does parcipate in practice though, and she’s probably second best behind Xander in the club.

Leo is the secretary/treasurer (damn if I remember what positions you need in a high school club) of the dance club, third in the family and is a sophomore. He doesn’t actually dance in the club, but he’s still involved with all the paperwork, the club’s funds, scheduling practices, so on. He’s mostly just in the corner of the club room doing “work” on his iPad. He’s an excellent student and tries to follow in Xander’s footsteps despite the two being kinda awkward around each other. Really he just watches anime on his tablet all practice. He’s like a closet anime fan, only his squad Odin and Niles know, along with Elise, since she likes anime too. Hes kinda that line between millennial and gen-z, and though he doesn’t seem like it he’s fresh with the memes.

Elise is the youngest and a freshman. She also dances in the club but is probably the least serious about the whole club rivalry, since she thinks it’s silly. She understands why Xander is doing it though and won’t argue with him. She gets along the best with Leo, but they also have the most sibling rivalry and will occasionally be found T posing at each other from across the hallways of their house. She’s gen-z and is very into the memes, she likes anime too and argues with Leo for hours about who’s the best ninja in Naruto and why magical girls can transform without getting interrupted.

So where’s Corrin and Azura fit in?

So there’s Corrin and Kamui, they’re twins. They transferred over from a serperate high school and are both in junior year. The backstory on them is due to circumstances unknown to them, they were taken from their birth parents. At some point they were adopted, and they grew up together under the care of their legal guardian, Jakob. When they started high school, they made fast friends with Azura who was another kid that was adopted. Both twins like to sing and dance, and they wanted to join both clubs but were barred from one or the other because of, you know. Well they decided that was bullshit and with Azura, came up with a plan: get the clubs to reconnect, so that at the end of the year, they could win the regional high school performance arts competition.

Every year in the region, the high schools compete in performance arts competition. Technically the Nohrians and Hoshidans can enter as she-erase groups despite being from the same school, but they’ve always lost. Now it’s the last year for both Xander and Ryoma, and Azura has a plan to get them to make up and work together to win. She’s watched they fight for three years and despite being close friends with both families, she’s never been able to get them to see eye to eye. So with the twins working with her, the following plan is enacted:

Corrin, the sister, joins th Classical Dance club, and becomes close friends with the Nohrian family. Kamui, the brother, joins the Modern Dance club and does the same. By working as double agents, they plan to slowly convince the two families to forget their rivalry and work together, as well as plan a joint performance for the end of the year competition so that they could finally win the completion as friends instead of losing as enemies. If this is starting to sound like a cheesy high school musical teen type movie then GOOD because that’s EXACTLY WHAT IS IT.

That’s the gist of the plot but here’s some other characters I had ideas for:

Odin, Selena and Laslow are transfer students similar to the Corrin twins. They all in the Classical Dance club. They’re all juniors but have been going to that school since sophomore year.

Odin’s name is really Owain, but when he transferred he told everyone his name was Odin. Why?? Because it....sounded cooler. He’s pretty openly in anime, he’s the kid that Naruto runs down the hallway in high school and constantly talks about his “dark power”, you know the one. He became friends with Leo when he caught him watching anime during practice. Together with Niles they’re all close group of friends.

Niles is that kid that just, never showed up to class. He’d only show up for important tests but otherwise ditched the second he had the chance. Despite that he does pretty well in class. Not a second passes when he’s not saying something nasty. Leo stuck up for him once when he was getting picked on by some dickheads, and though he could take the verbal abuse the act stuck with him and he’s been close friends with Leo ever since. He has kinda a rough home life, so he’s usually at Leo or Odin’s house. Luckily Garon is not really home to complain and Odin’s mom is nice and let’s him stay over often. He refuses to wear any shirt that doesn’t show off his cleavage.

Selena also uses a modified name, but it’s more for paranoia that somebody might recognize her if she uses her real name. Her mom is kinda famous and she hates being compared to her, so at the chance to be just “Selena” and not “Cordelia’s daughter” she took it. She’s got a mean streak which tends to ward people off but she’s very close with Odin and Laslow, since they were friends in their old school. She plays water polo and hitches a ride with Laslow and Odin after practice, since Laslow is the only one of their group that has a car and a drivers license. She also hangs out with Camillla and Beruka, who rides a motorcycle like Camilla, a lot.

Laslow’s name is actually Inigo, but for similar reasons to Selena, he goes by Laslow since he doesn’t want to be recognized as his mother’s son. It’s more from embarrassment, because his mom is an exotic dancer. He isn’t ashamed of it, but he’s afraid of what other people might say and just tries to keep it a secret. Because of his mom though, he’s very good at dancing, and joined the Classical Dance club when Xander caught him dancing after school while waiting for Selena to finish water polo practice. He has horrible stage fright but Xander sees potential in him, so he’s working on being able to dance in front of other people. Xander asks that Laslow teach him his unique style, and Laslow reluctantly agrees. It’s how they became close.

I have some other notes that aren’t as detailed about characters. Peri is a scene kid, Keaton is the furry kid you also see in high school that wear a hate with wolf ears on it and a clip on wolf tail. Effie and Arthur are both on the football team, Effie is the star player and Arthur is....usually the distraction. You’ll be pleased to know I didn’t actually finish Fates so I only know so much about some characters, but yeah.

I’ll try to make some comics about the Hoshidans so I can talk about them too, but for now this is what I got.

Guys, I wrote a thing. Have ~2,500 words of worldbuilding and feels. I’m thinking this is about a year or two after our glaive fam has settled in Insomnia.

Nyx stretches out his shoulders as he walks, stifling a laugh. Tredd and Crowe are going at it behind him and Libertus looks like he’s three seconds away from grabbing them both by the scruff and shaking them like unruly puppies. Luche is studiously ignoring them no matter how many times Tredd tries to get his attention. Axis and Pelna are absorbed in a discussion about some magical theory that he couldn’t even begin to follow with Sonitus throwing in a word now and then. Luche catches his eyes and sees his smirk and rolls his eyes.

This night off will be good for them – training has been rough the past few days, getting them ready for an upcoming mission that’s a little bit outside their norm, and all of them could use a break. A night of drinking and good food is what they need.

But when Nyx steps into the bar, he sees someone that makes him freeze.

Luche, standing right behind him, is instantly on alert, catching the others’ attention. Nyx only has eyes for the woman sitting at a large table in the center of the room. He’s only met her a few times, but he would know her anywhere. She looks up from the beer bottle in her hands and smiles at him, beckoning him over.

Nyx goes, only vaguely aware of the others following after him. “Mother,” he greets, ignoring the sharp breath sucked in behind him.

“Storm child,” she greets in return, and her voice echoes – like rushing water, like a crashing wave – causing a hush to fall in the bar.

They are in the heart of the Galahdian district. Everyone knows the Mother even if they’ve never met her. Of his group, Nyx suspects he’s the only one who has. He remembers the day his grandmother introduced them, all gleeful laughter and bright smiles, as she teasingly called the woman that’s sitting before him his great grandmother. He knows her, recognizes her on sight, but the others know her just as well for all they’ve never met her.

“Sit with me for a while, little warriors,” Leviathan, Mother of the Seas, Thalassa, first of the Drowned, says to them.

Nyx easily slides into the chair next to her as the others’ pull up chairs of their own. He feels the eyes of everyone in the bar on them even as conversation picks up again.

“There is magic living under your skin that is not your own,” she says as she gestures at the bartender.

“We joined the Kingsglaive,” Nyx explains, “The King shared his magic with us.”

Leviathan hums and takes a sip of her beer as the bartender brings each of them their own bottle. “Yes. The Lucii have long been gifted in such ways. The magic is in their blood and always will be. Will you indulge me, little loves? Let a tired, old woman tell you a tale?”

“Of course,” Luche says, and Nyx wants to laugh at the light pink that dusts his cheeks when the Tidemother graces him with a smile but manages to refrain.

“The magic that now lives in your skin is old,” she says, “Older than even Solheim. It is from a time when Humanity was young and the Astrals were new. There was a pair of siblings, twins, a man and a woman, with wanderlust in their hearts and wind in their souls. They did the World Mothers a great service and were in turn blessed as thanks.”

“’Power is a gift of hope, of light, of love,’ the Dawn Mother told them, ‘Use it well.’ ‘Power is a curse of pride, of pain, of avarice,’ the Soul Keeper warned them, ‘Use it wisely.’ And they did. The siblings used their power to heal, to protect, to guide. They taught their children and their children’s children the same. ‘Use it well,’ they told their blood, ‘Use it wisely.’”

Leviathan looks at each of them intently and Nyx feels her gaze pressing down on him like a physical weight. “The World Mothers blessed the siblings’ line with their grace, right down to the blood. And blood is blood, no matter how thinly spread out over the generations, so the magic stayed and though time eventually turned the truth into little more than a story as it always does, the lessons remained.”

Here Leviathan stops, gaze going distant, fingers idly twirling the beer bottle in her hands. “There was a child born to this blessed line after the fall of Solheim,” she says softly, wistfully, “A child that grew into a man, a warrior, a healer. A King. He used his power well and he used his power wisely. He healed and protected; he was both the sword and the shield.”

And Nyx knows this story – they all do. The story of the First King, of the Sage, of the man who held the Starscourge at bay for so long that it turned his blood as black as the starless night sky and still he did not falter. The story of the Immortal Accursed, of the Fallen King, of the Nameless Wanderer.

The story of Leviathan’s Stolen Child.

“The sword-master deemed the power too much for one and, with the help of the killing cold, tore the power in two,” she continues, a rumble entering her voice as an old anger flashes across her eyes. But it’s gone as quick as it came, rearing its head and turning away just as fast, saved for those who deserve it. “Blood is blood, no matter how thinly spread over the generations,” she repeats, “The line of Kings you know today is descended from the brother from so long ago, while your Oracles descended from the sister. The power was split between the two lines – the Kings given the Soul Keeper’s blessing, the Oracles, the Dawn Mother’s.”

“But the price of power is steep and the price of power tampered is steeper still,” the Tidemother says solemnly, “The magic under your skin is not a toy, little warriors. It is not the poisoned dagger you thrust into your enemy’s heart in the name of vengeance. You swore an oath on the blessing of your maker, Etro, the Keeper of Souls, Guardian of the Dead, and were in turn granted the same grace that lives in the King’s veins. It is a great gift. And a terrible curse.”

“Use it well,” Leviathan tells them with all the gravity of a binding vow, “Use it wisely.”

Nyx feels the words settle into his bones and he doesn’t hesitate to promise, “Yes, Mother.”

The others echo him, only a second behind, and Leviathan smiles at them, proudly, fondly, a teasing light entering her eyes, cutting the solemn mood as she raps her knuckles against the table.

“Now then,” she says, “On to the real purpose of my visit.”

She waves a hand and Nyx follows the gesture to a table in the far corner. There are over a dozen people crowded around it, all with their hoods drawn up. They stand at Leviathan’s prompting and the two smallest figures dart forward with a shriek.

“Uncle Axis!”

Nyx is vaguely aware of Axis making a strangled sound somewhere behind him as chaos erupts in the bar, but all he can focus on is the woman in front of him. She’s pulled down her hood, is looking up at him with a trembling smile, tears on her cheeks, bright gold in her eyes.

The same gold that shined in their grandmother’s eyes.

“Selena,” he breathes out, voice catching, and he’s reaching out with shaking hands because she was gone, his sister was gone, he saw the fire –

And then Selena is in his arms, clinging to him, choking out sobs into his shoulder.

“Selena, Selena, Selena, Selena,” he chants as he rocks them back and forth, pulling her into him and lifting her up with ease.

She wraps her legs around him and squeezes closer still. Nyx feels her head shift, her chin hook over his shoulder, one of her hands untangle from his shirt.

“Libs,” she chokes out – and oh gods, her voice, he’d started to forget what it sounded like – as she reaches for the man that was another brother to her growing up, “Libertus –”

And Libertus is there, wrapping himself around them both. Nyx can feel him trembling, can feel the hitch in his breath, but he’s there with them and –

“Crowe,” he rasps, “Get your ass in here. Selena, Libs adopted while you were away –”

Libertus releases a wet laugh into his hair.

“Shut up, hero,” Crowe says roughly and Nyx says nothing about how she sounds like she’s crying as she curls into his side.

His family all in one place in way he never thought they would be. He glances up, sees Leviathan still sitting at the table, beer in hand, watching them all with sad, fond eyes.

Thank you, Mother, he thinks.

She turns to him, catches his eyes, and smiles. It’s a small thing. Gentle. Soft. She toasts him with her bottle and tilts her head in acknowledgement and Nyx hears the sound of a crashing wave in his head followed a rumbling laugh.

He presses a smile into Selena’s hair and curls up in his family’s arms.

He’s home.

Axis’s world has narrowed down to the two small forms in his arms.

His niece and nephew, his older sister’s children, her twins, that he thought lost when Galahd burned. They’re warm and solid as they cling to him, breathing, alive.

“Mom’s gone,” Avis says quietly into his neck, fingers trembling under the force of her grip on his jacket.

Axis closes his eyes as that wound is ripped open anew, his heart aching as his eyes burn. “I know,” he says, somehow managing to keep his voice even, “I know.”

“There were bad men,” Atlas says, looking up at him, gold eyes far too old for his face. They used to be brown – the same brown as him, as his sister, their mother. “Bad metal men with red eyes and Mom said run and we did, but there was a river and it was fast and – ”

“Styx?” Axis cuts in to ask, because Atlas looks like he’s about to start hyperventilating if he doesn’t.

His nephew nods miserably. “Mom said to swim, but…”

Axis knows that river, remembers it. It was more rapids than anything, all white foam and rushing water. Children were warned away from it. It wasn’t swimmable and everyone knew it. Why would his sister run there?

“Mom said to swim,” his niece repeats, and Avis looks up at him with the same bright gold eyes as her brother, “But we couldn’t, and we told her and she said,” Avis’s breath hitches and her eyes glaze with tears, lips trembling, “She said Mother would save us. That we just had to ask and she would save us.”

“She pushed us in,” Atlas says quietly, “She pushed us in and then the bad men were there and –”

Axis can see it. His sister, desperate and afraid, MTs closing in on all sides. A rushing river at her back. And her children. Her children who were looking to her to save them. Her children who weren’t even ten yet, who were so young, who deserved to live far more than she. It’s an easy choice. Axis can see it.

He smooths his hand down his nephew’s back. “Your mom knew what she was doing,” he says, “You’re here right?”

Avis nods solemnly. “Mother found us. She taught us the sea and then said we could chose what we wanted.”

“We wanted Mom and Nanna and you,” Atlas says mournfully, “But Mother said she couldn’t give Mom and Nanna back.”

“She promised to find you though,” Avis says seriously, “She said if choosing you was what we wanted, she would find you.”

“We wanted you,” the twins say in unison.

Axis feels his eyes sting and doesn’t bother to try and hold back the tears this time. “Thank you,” he says around the burn building in his throat, pulling Atlas tight against his side as he presses his forehead against Avis’s. “Thank you for choosing me.”

Atlas sniffles wetly against is neck and Axis could care less about how gross it feels. “You’re our uncle,” he grumbles with all the belligerence of a small child even as he curls in as close as he can, “We love you.”

Avis frames his face with her small hands. “Thank you for being here to choose.”

Something in Axis settles for the first time since Galahd burned.

He can breathe.

Thalassa slips out of the bar quietly, unnoticed, as her children reunite with their loved ones. She takes a slow, steady breath, closes her eyes, and tips her head towards the sky. Sometimes she wished she didn’t remember. The yearning for her little brother is so strong, it’s a physical ache. She misses him far more than she ever thought she could, far more than she understood was possible. But she knows that if she didn’t remember, she would never bother. She would not have her children, would not have her new family.

It’s pain, yes, but a good, bittersweet kind. One that heals as much as it hurts.

She opens her eyes to look at the presence that’s appeared next to her. It’s a man with a staff longer than he is tall and a beard the same silvery-gray of stormy clouds.

“Thank you, sister,” Ramuh says quietly.

Thalassa smiles softly and slips her hand into the crook of the arm offered to her, shaking her head. “They are as much mine as they are yours,” she says, “It was not for you, but my own selfish reasons.”

“Yes,” Ramuh says dryly as they walk down the street, “Saving lives and reuniting loved ones without anyone prompting you. How very selfish.”

She laughs, grinning up at him. “Terribly selfish,” she confirms, leaning into her storm brother’s arm, “They same way all the best people are.”

Ramuh huffs at her but says nothing and they walk in silence for a while.

“Aegeus would have punched me first,” she says after a few blocks, longing and wistful, “Then he would have shouted and cried at the same time. Then he would have hugged me.”

“You miss him,” Ramuh states.

“Yes,” she replies, “Always.”

“I’m sorry,” her storm brother says, sadness in his eyes.

She shrugs because there is little anyone can do about it at this point. Even if she were not Leviathan, she still died. They still would have been separated. “Perhaps one day, when we are no longer needed and the Soul Keeper grants us our rest, I will see him again.” She nudges him with her elbow. “I could introduce you and you can tell him all of the crazy stories I never want anyone to know.”

Ramuh smiles at her and presses a kiss to her temple. “I would like that.”

Supergirl season three full review

How many episodes pass the Bechdel test?

100% (twenty-three of twenty-three).

What is the average percentage per episode of female characters with names and lines?

57.23%

How many episodes have a cast that is at least 40% female?

All but one (it was that crappy crossover episode). All but four have casts over 50%.

How many episodes have a cast that is less than 20% female?

Zero.

How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?

Forty-four. Twenty who appeared in more than one episode, five who appeared in at least half the episodes, and two who appeared in every episode.

How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?

Thirty-four. Ten who appeared in more than one episode, four who appeared in at least half the episodes, and one who appeared in every episode.

Positive Content Status:

Not bad; a handful of episodes included some sincere effort to make quality statements about social issues, but they were pretty clunky about it and not always successful; certainly never impressive enough to increase the content rating (average rating of 3).

General Season Quality:

Middling. It was full of useless plot threads and wasted time, and much of the content had no real function; consequently, the central story arc lacked stakes, emotional resonance, and heart. That said, most of the episodes are basically solid viewing, and there was infinitely less rage-inducing content than there was in season two. That’s a weak win, but still a win.

MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) under the cut:

Hey, remember Morgan Edge? He was in four episodes at the beginning of the season, served no real narrative function despite his prominent treatment within those recurrences, and then Lena had him arrested using the most obviously-coerced confession in history? Sure, he was guilty, but he confessed under duress while being actively threatened with death by drone, the evidence of both the tape itself and of the testimony of the many eyewitnesses to the attack would have had him bouncing out of jail like that. The ridiculousness of that plot ‘resolution’ was even worse than the meaninglessness of Edge’s character in the first place. Remember when, briefly, they pretended that Morgan Edge was important?

Edge is a prime example of the fatal flaw in this entire season: pointless plot threads that went nowhere, meant nothing, furthered no characterisation for regular characters, and had no impact on the central arc of the season. Story-wise, the season lurched all over the place, and while it wasn’t without its good elements, ultimately it achieved very little. Sure, the season ended with a number of apparent changes for most of the major characters’ lives (though, conspicuously, not Kara’s) - Alex is now head of the DEO, J’onn is doing...something else, hopefully not something that removes him from the show, Winn has apparently gone to the future, traded out for our new friend ‘Brainy’ (a change I will be happy for if it sticks), and James has publicly revealed himself as Guardian - but the thing is, these changes are mostly last-minute, not things that the season was building toward all along. These changes are mostly not the result of character arcs, they’re just things that are happening now as set-up for next season. This season itself? Not much happened.

We wasted quite a lot of time with Mon-El, AGAIN, which is especially disappointing because it’s the largest time-and-attention-suck of the season, and it is completely irrelevant to everything; at least when we were wasting time with Mon-El last season, it was because he was the centrepiece of the (awful) plot. This time around, he’s just there to draaagg out the fallout from his departure, so that instead of getting over the relationship within the six months between the end of last season and the beginning of this one, Kara can continue to pine ridiculously and then get caught up in ~complicated feelings~ when Mon-El reappears, back from the future and bringing his new wife with him. That’s the closest thing Kara gets to a personal arc this season, actually; having ~complicated feelings~ about Mon-El. So, her story isn’t really about herself, it’s about whatever Mon-El is doing (again!), and then after wasting the entire season on that sorry excuse for a story, they amicably split in the end and he goes back to the future and that’s...it? I sincerely hope that’s it, and that he won’t be appearing again as a regular on the show, but it’s also a super disappointing waste of time. They didn’t have to bring Mon-El back at all, not for some drawn-out version of ‘closure’ for Kara, and not for any of the other nothing that his presence achieved in the meantime. Honestly, having characters show up FROM THE FUTURE and then not doing anything useful or important with it is so weird. We coulda dropped Brainy here and sent Winn away in a short-arc subplot, it’d have been neater and less time consuming, and we wouldn’t have troubled with all the Mon-El and Imra crap. As much as Mon-El kept carrying on about how he would never disrespect Imra, the story itself disrespects her by giving her no other meaningful narrative function than to be a barrier between Mon-El and Kara (which, as the story plays out...didn’t matter anyway). The whole thing amounts to a lot of bluster with no real impact; we end the season with Mon-El gone and Kara having to move on, and that’s EXACTLY HOW WE ENDED LAST TIME.

Meanwhile, back at the actual central arc for the season, shit was still whack, y’all. I wondered what they were gonna do with it after they went and had Reign show up so early in the piece (I thought maybe they were gonna build over the course of the season with Samantha progressively losing more control, but, that woulda required narrative pacing and story building to be in play, and the creators weren’t into that kind of crap this season), and what they went for was a completely pointless side-distraction with two other, lesser world-killers, who appeared out of nowhere, fooled around for a few episodes, and then died, ne’er to trouble the story again. Reign absorbing their powers didn’t have any effect (particularly egregious since the Legion was so worried about Pestilence, only to declare their work done once she was gone because apparently, Reign wasn’t gonna go around using that particular world-killer power anyway, because...reasons), they might as well have never included other world-killers at all, the only reason they were there was so that the plot could tread water for a while after revealing its Big Gun at mid-season and having nowhere left to go. Selena and her fellow witches, likewise, proved utterly pointless, just another distraction that wound up easily dispatched, and meanwhile Reign was killed/separated from Samantha only to return again and then be pretty easily defeated anyway with a combination of shoddy time travel and the last-minute addition of a convenient...magic fountain. Yeah. Even the oft-repeated notion they hammered about saving Samantha by recalling her to herself, using her connection with Ruby, etc, turned out to be a total smokescreen - Samantha and Ruby both proved to be total plot devices rather than characters in their own right, foisted on the pre-existing characters to generate artificial emotional stakes with a friendship that burst forth fully-formed in the space of two episodes, and giving Alex a child to focus her maternal instincts on for a while. Presumably, we’ll now never see them again.

Oh, and did I mention that Kara finds out that her mother and a whole chunk of Krypton actually survived, but they totally underplay it and she has essentially no emotional reaction to this development at all? Since this seemingly life-altering revelation also has no impact on character or story, they might as well not have bothered, I mean, Kara is more hung up on losing her asshole boyfriend from last season than she is on discovering that a whole piece of her world (friends/family included) is actually still around, so. Who needs logical characterisation, anyway? For all that Kara complains about feeling out of balance living two lives, she also spends almost no time living as Kara Danvers instead of Supergirl in this season (especially the second half); remember when her job as a reporter used to matter to character or story, like, at all? Remember when actually being seen to balance things was a source of narrative conflict and development? Now, if she had discovered that surviving part of Krypton near the BEGINNING of the season instead of in the fourth-last episode, maybe she could have spent the season having, I dunno, a sort of character arc about dealing with it? Selena and the relevant mythology on the world-killers and the ways to kill them/make them/whatever could have all been introduced in earlier parts of the season so that they could BUILD THE FUCKING NARRATIVE instead of just throwing in convenient new plot devices and information at the last second? Maybe the whole story could have been improved by making it actually about the character the series is named after, and analysing her still-developing relationship with her identity and its duality? It’s such a fucking obvious character arc I want to punch something. How, HOW was this not what the whole season was about? How did we end up futzing around with Mon-El and pointless future-visitors and extra antagonists who didn’t matter to the season or its characters at all?

If you forgot that they also had some time-wasting with some fanatical cult crap on Earth that mostly just served to provide Kara with yet another character to drop explainers about things instead of having her learn stuff in some kind of plot-related fashion, I could understand; it was pretty forgettable. Alex and Maggie broke up, which was rather sudden and wasteful, really, but at least it was tied to Alex’s realisation that she wants to have children and that constituted one of the only solid character threads of this messy, wishy-washy season (though it also often kept Alex distracted in other parts of the story and not having those all-important sisterly interactions with Kara which formed the backbone of the show in the first season, so, boo for that). J’onn had his dad around for a while, and that was legitimately pretty good stuff (y’all know I’m weak for Martians), though I really hope it has some strong narrative fallout in season four because otherwise it seems like a plot designed to torture J’onn emotionally, as if his story isn’t already tragic enough. They also wasted James less this season? Unfortunately, they wasted Lena more, and I’m especially suspicious of the way they not only strangled the amount of story she spent with Kara as a friend, they also threw in this awkwardly-executed situation with Lena actively disliking Supergirl and turning Kara’s secret into something which jeopardises their future relationship. Their interactions last season were so strong, and the effort to put space between them in this season feels overt (giving Lena a romance with James and a new/old best friend in Samantha contributes to this); I can’t help but wonder if the Powers That Be were upset that they’d accidentally made a female relationship with more chemistry than the canon-lesbian couple (and at the same time as they were badly failing at giving Kara a believable hetero love interest, no less) and decided that breaking up one of their best character partnerships was preferable to anyone reading the hero of the story as anything other than straight. They’ve made so many hugely questionable decisions about Kara’s personal life at this point, no BTS fuckery would surprise me. Remember season one, when the plot had a shape and the characters generally did things for understandable reasons? Those were the days. We’re closer to getting back to them now than we were after the disaster that was last season, but I’m still not banking on the show ever regaining the focused quality which made the first season work so well. To do that, they have to start telling stories about Kara again, at minimum. That would be a start.
