Beauty in Splash Art 3

League of Legends splash art is, on the face of it, perhaps an odd place to go looking for beauty. These are JPGs whose first and primary function is to hawk video game cosmetics for a free-to-play game, it's not exactly the sort of thing you expect artists to particularly flex their creativity for.

And true enough, a lot of splash art is fairly rote. Here's a character, wow look at their cool pose, don't you want to spend dollars to own this, and so on.

But sometimes, one of the artists working at Riot, or at their outsourcing studios, seems to get a bee in their bonnet, or maybe they just get excited about an opportunity to practise craft, and you get splash art that tries to do something more than simply sell the product, or artwork which displays a real flex of technical skill, often in ways which are functionally invisible at any of the common resolutions that the art will ever be displayed at.

There is genuine reward to be found in those pieces, in zooming in close and marveling at the level of effort spent. So let's spend about an hour doing that!

The Arcane fandom seems to be struggling with whether or not any of the characters are good people and to put it simply: No, most of them are probably not good people.

But I like introducing others to league of legends lore so here's more characters from league that have complex morals in their backstories. When Fortiche begins work on the next show I have no doubt in my mind that there will be even more endless debates and name calling ensuing since League of Legends has a shocking amount of "problematic faves" in its roster.

1. Garen Crowngaurd

He looks like a generic white man in armor with a big sword. When I saw those debates about whether or not Jayce was a good guy or not for shooting and killing Viktor, I kind of already knew that this fandom is definitely not going to be able to handle mr. "I need to be constantly stressed and worried about my life in order to function" over here.

Garen's issue is that he's a loyal knight for a nation that is very, VERY racist against mages and people who use magic in general. And his sister is a mage. He has always known this deep down, but has been suppressing the knowledge of it because the stress of worrying about it keeps him going anyways (weird guy, i know) and even though he KNOWS he's imprisoning people just like his sister, he is too loyal to Demacia (the kingdom they're from) to stop his servitude. So he is a "good guy" who hunts mages to either imprison them or kill them (if they "resist" too much), and he knows his sister is a mage but doesn't want to quit his whole knight job. (it's more complex than that but you could read more here on the website)

2. Sylas

If we ever get a Demacia series that's animated, I already know that everyone and their mom will just make thirst edits of this man and his "inspirational" quotes about revolution and stuff. Meanwhile, they'll excuse all his abhorrent behavior, crimes, and abuse because he's fighting back against an oppressive regime so he must still be a good person despite all of that! (he is not)

Sylas is a mage who was imprisoned in Demacia and has been kept in prison for a long time after he was wrongfully accused of killing someone with his magic. Ever since, he's been in prison plotting for a way to get out. He does escape, hence the name "The Unshackled".

While Sylas' motivations are pure in that he wants to live in a Demacia where mages aren't persecuted against for just having magic...he kind of has a very violent way of going about it where he not only imparts violence on random non-mage civilians, but also forces other mages to do violence as well. He's cool and I do like Sylas, and his story is a complicated tale about revolution and particularly about the use of violence to free yourself, but is he a "good" person? Eh....its up to interpretation in my book (he's probably not a good person lol)

When I saw people debating on whether or not Caitlyn was a "fascist" or if Viktor was a "Eugenicist" I couldn't help but think the Arcane fandom wouldn't be able to really handle a "true" revolutionary like Sylas who just wants freedom by any means necessary and the moral implications of that in his story.

Sylas not only has a short story and bio that you can read here but there's also a really good game that Riot made called The Mageseeker where you can play as him and meet the other Demacia characters.

3. Sejuani

Sejuani is the "Warmother" of a clan of viking(?) people named the Winter's Claw. She's also my favorite Freljord character because I find her way of surviving in the Freljord interesting. Sejuani's issue or moral quandry is that she is whole heartedly all for raiding and pillaging other villages and small settlements to survive the harsh winters of the Freljord, and doesn't see anything really wrong with killing people who are weaker than her if it means the people closest to her can survive.

Despite all of this, you still get the sense that she's not a "terrible" person because she still cares about all of the men, women, and children in the Winter's Claw (it's just fuck everyone else in her book lol) Sejuani used to have a "sister" (they weren't really blood related but they still have a somewhat sisterly bond anyways?) who is most definitely the reincarnation of a dead Freljord Goddess/Queen (long story)

Anyways, her and her sister had a falling out because they couldn't agree on the way to get resources for everyone in their clans. Ashe wanted to start agriculture and farm life in the Freljord, where as Sejuani thinks just taking shit from other people is the fastest and surest way. Sejuani is interesting to me because her view on violence is one that's pretty straightforward but not set in disdain towards the other people she pillages. Like, she doesn't do all of this stuff because she hates people, she's doing it because she truly views violence as the only way to get what you need, and as long as she's doing it for a good cause, which is to clothe and feed the many people of the Winter's claw, than there's nothing to really worry about.

If you were one of those people who were really wondering if "hm maybe Ambessa had a point...?" then you're in luck because you'd probably really like Sejuani too T_T You can read more about her here.

4. Viego

If there was a contest for THE problematic king of League of Legends it'd be Viego. He looks cool and is most definitely a villain but a lot of fans can't really seem to wrap their heads around it. Viego's story is that he was a king of a really cool nation, and he fell in love with a Seamstress named Isolde. Cut to a few months later, and she died (rip) and this made Viego SO upset and heartbroken that he quite literally used dark magic to bring her back, but it caused something called The Ruination.

He wanted to bring Isolde back to life, but the process of doing that means he quite literally is bringing about the end of Runeterra completely. His kingdom fell first and became the Shadow Isles, which is this desolate wasteland where anyone who goes there just dies or has their soul ripped from their body forever (spooky).

If people can excuse Viktor turning everyone into statues forever and destroying the entire world with rune magic, then I don't see why THIS guy can't be forgiven. Plus he's doing it for "true" love :3 (i can't stand him lol)

Tf2 Characters If They Were In League Of Legends [part 1/?]

a list of mercenary headcanons and the regions of Runeterra they might belong to:

Offense classes:

•Scout is from Zaun

•Soldier is from Noxus

•Pyro is from Ixtal

I also have a headcanon about Scout as a mercenary working for Silco so consequently he also works for Jinx. Soldier is a Noxian mercenary like Samira, Pyro is a fire elemental (wow how much imagination...)

Defense classes:

•Demoman is from Bilgewater

•Heavy is from Freljord

•Engineer is from Piltover

My headcanons: Demoman lost his eye after making a deal with Tahm Kench, Heavy is part of the Winter's Claw so he's allied with Sejuani (but I can see him being good with Ashe too, let me know what you think) and Engineer studied at the same Academy where Jayce and Viktor studied and knows Heimerdinger

Support classes:

•Medic was born in Piltover but moved to Zaun

•Sniper was born in Bilgewater but lived in Ixtal

•Spy was born in Demacia but moved to Piltover

Medic went to Zaun for obvious reasons (uncontrolled experiments). Sniper I actually imagine is a Vastaya but I'll make another post about my headcanons (maybe). Spy is a mage and escaped from Demacia

She was ready to leave when your voice halted her step. -You can't leave without letting me hug you first- You opened your arms. -Heh, you sure are a softie- Sejuani embraced you before leaving to take care of Bristle.

A smooth,motherly like voice stopped you from leaving the cave Morgana was resting in. The lady opened her arms with a small smile on her face. -You can't leave without letting me hug you first- Your heart melted and turned back to her. She wrapped her arms around you. Her wings followed after;not too tight around you to let you breathe. Her scent was soothing and now you didn't want to leave the hug anytime soon. -I'll be back shortly, I promise you- You begrudgingly left her arms. -Have a safe journey- You waved at her;stepping out into the morning sun.

-You can't leave without letting me hug you first- You said to her as she looked down to a corridor opened by a void creature. -You talk like I'm about to die- Kai'sa tried to ease the tension between you too;sighing when she felt her suit react at the vicinity to the corridor. -What if you do.What if you never come back- The woman frowned. i just realized one of the the reason they probably made arcane about piltover and zaun is because piltover & zaun had the worst lore of all the regions lowkey like if you asked me anything about the lore of that place before arcane, i remember absolutely nothing about it outside of jinx lmao because ionia’s lore alone kinda blows everyone else out of the water

which is why i’m looking forward to what riot has in store and i’m glad they decided to do only 1 more season of arcane as someone who lived through both voltron and she-ra and is currently witnessing whatever the fuck is going on with miraculous ladybug

they could have easily milked the show with a shit ton of seasons and i am questioning how they’re going to end it atm BUT i’d rather a show be good and short than to be long winded and terrible lol

So: for LoL, which storyline is your favorite? And if you were to decide, what direction would you take it?

I mean, my favourite story set in any League of Legends thing by far is Arcane, but I suspect that's not quite what you mean.

Second to that is Ashe and Sejuani, specifically as their relationship is told in the Ashe: Warmother comic. It's a comic about the ways in which their relationships with their mothers shape them into the people they become - both of them consciously rejecting their mothers' legacies, and yet both of them utterly reflective of them.

Like, Ashe's mother Grena is this unflinching visionary, utterly possessed by a dream of ancient legacies, who is at once incredibly powerful and willing to sacrifice any number of lives for her vision, but also vulnerable, flawed and terrified of what her leadership will do both to her tribe and to her daughter.

And you see those qualities emerge in Ashe as she determines to become the protector of the weak in the Freljord, the champion of the Hearthbound and the vulnerable. She inherits Grena's steel-edged will and dedication to a vision of the future, even as she tries over and over again to reject her mother's obsession with ancient glories and mystical names.

Sejuani on the other hand is raised by... well, by a bitter, abusive drunk who sees her as nothing but a signifier of her own regrets and failures, and who projects all her own insecurities and weaknesses onto her child.

And Sejuani grows up both resentfully rejecting all the insecurity and pain her mother has been beating into her, but also inherits her mother's brutality and willingness to see the human beings under her command as disposable objects whose worth is measured in utility.

They are two reflections, two shadows of their mothers, and of the relationship they had to them, sisters by mutual choice and love, who are brought into conflict because their traumas have shaped them in irreconcilably different ways.

It is ENORMOUSLY compelling as a narrative about siblings, and as a framing device for the conflict in the Freljord - especially with Lissandra spooking around in the background as a universal mother-figure for the region, who in turn has her own traumas about being alienated from her sisters in ways that are similar to how Ashe and Sejuani were split apart.

The Freljord sometimes runs the risk of devolving into pop culture viking stereotypes and high fantasy pagan god nonsense (/affectionate, I love Ornn so much), but Ashe and Sejuani and their estrangement, especially as presented in Warmother, brings the thematic core of the region back down to some extremely fundamental questions about how to survive in an abusive environment - whether it be a harsh winter, or a broken family.

Warmother is a fantastic comic, everyone should read it (the art by Nina Vakueva absolutely fucks, and the approach to character design is strong as hell), and it breaks my heart that Riot's management couldn't keep their shit together with Marvel for long enough for it to get any kind of a sequel.
