For Sale - Mid-1983 Seiko 7548-7000 Diver, with two nylon straps and steel bracelet

There are many vintage Seiko divers popular with collectors, and the 7548-7000 – like the mid-1983 example sold here in seldom seen condition – is one of these.

The design of the 7548 is classic and simple, and borrows heavily from the instantly recognizable earlier Seiko 7002 automatic diver.  Its 7548-caliber quartz movement is tough and reliable – during its heyday, it was also popular with armed forces for this same reason.  It is a widely held assumption that military personnel wear military watches.  However, U.S. General Norman Schwarzkopf certainly didn't on either wrist.  While Commander of the Operation Desert Storm, the general was wearing a Seiko 7548 when he led – at the time – the strongest combined military force the world had ever witnessed to evict Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991.  

It is somewhat amusing that rather than wear a single watch with two timezones, Schwarzkopf wore two watches, one on each wrist, and both were quite civilian.  Military members understandably desire easily legible and dependable watches, and the general was certainly no different, because as a dive-style watch, the 7548 was both comfortable and legible.  While an automatic version was available at that time, Schwarzkopf chose the Seiko 7548 quartz example, which would have made more sense at the time as quartz was far more popular than mechanical watches and considered the highpoint of wrist watch technology then.

Fast forward to 1999, which witnessed Schwarzkopf’s 7548 garner an impressive $11,000 at charity auction, where it was auctioned under the title "Seiko Desert Storm.”  The general noted, in a letter when he donated his watch to the Antiquorum auction house, "I always wore two watches during the [Gulf] war. The one on my left arm was set on Saudi Arabian time and the Seiko on my right arm was set on Eastern Standard Time. That way I could quickly glance at my watches and instantly know the time in both Saudi Arabia and Washington, D.C.”
