When the ATV went flying by the house at 3:15 AM I woke up at the same time I heard Lenz stand up in his crate and take note. He’s already on it I thought. Good dog. The four months of belly rubs and treats hadn’t made him completely soft. He still longs for the hunt, I think we both do. Maybe it’s just something that once the beast is in your belly it never leaves.

Obviously the ATV woke up the missus, as she decided it was a good opportunity for a spin to the bathroom, and by the time she came back and I heard the Police car slowly cruising down the street, I knew there was no going back to sleep. From the sound of his bedroom I heard Lenz shaking off the cobwebs of sleep and figured we might as well get up and start our morning with a neighborhood check.

I wasn’t the only one thinking this way. When I let Lenz out he stretched, looked up at me, wagged his stub and took off towards the back porch, which could only mean he was ready to hit the mean streets. Since it was just before 4 am, I opted to put him in his tracking harness and run him on a long lead to give him some room to roam, as there wouldn’t be many other dogs or vehicles out that time of the morning and it had been awhile since we’d done lead training and I was hoping to get him back to as he has now almost healed post-injury.

I keep saying there is nothing like walking the streets of my home town in the wee morning hours. This morning I opted to not listen to music, but rather spend some time thinking and enjoying my time with my four legged BFF. We walked our entire neighborhood twice, on diverging paths and circled back and forth a few times, Lenz moving in and around cars, bushes, and piles of refuse awaiting pickup by the sanitation companies. He worked hard, nose to the ground almost constantly as mentally I’m sure he was being taken back to a different time in his life as I was mine. As he moved from one side of each street to another, crisscrossing a wide track sniffing up a frenzy, but never quite picking up a scent worth following, I could tell he was happy. He had purpose. He was contributing.

I was only sad there was no one found lurking in the shadows, perhaps half hanging out of someone's car parked in their driveway, or stealing my neighbors Christmas decorations. Again.

By the time we got home an hour later he was tired enough to lay at my feet in front of the fire and fall asleep for the first time ever since he joined our little family. Yes, I finally got to see him sleep.

As I sit here enjoying my last coffee before I hit the shower and suit up to go conquer the boardroom, I’m watching my little tough guy curled up in a ball, twitching slightly as he dreams, surely of chasing bad guys through darks alleys and protecting the good people he’s entrusted to from the things that go bump in the night. Or at least I hope he is.

We all have a responsibility to look out for our communities, for each other, and to stand for those who can’t.
