hi hoc!! look at these birds i saw on a nature walk!!
AUGHHHHH curse the fact I'm not acquainted with American birds and especially not aquatic ones.... I can tell the second one is a duck though. The others look like rails if I'm not mistaken. The brown ones are youngsters but they're the same species
It's so cool that you could get such a close shot :DDD I hope you enjoyed your walk!! Thanks for sending me these they mean the world to me
#see your state (refering to it as a habitat) is kind of a weird one because it's closer to like. coastal south america than it is to#like... Georgia. even though it's fairly close. which means birds will decline the later but be bing chilling in the former even though we#humans haven't even put them in the same continent.#dakota ^^#hopefully I'm not doxxing you with this one but yeah. one hell of a habitat.

14. Just Me
Miya Atsumu x (f) smau
Y/Nâs eyes shot back and forth like a pinball as she watched Cat talk to Osamu like they had been friends forever. She knew that Cat had introduced herself to him a few weeks back right around the time they had eaten at his restaurant with Tooru but she hadnât expected them to be this chummy.
âItâs a bit weird ainât it?â She heard a voice say as she looked over to the blonde man beside her.
They had just finished prepping the photo booth and way ahead of schedule thanks to the surprising entrance of the Miya twins, more than 5 hours earlier than their shift to be exact.
âWell I guess not considering how friendly Cat is, she seemed to get along with you too earlier.â Y/N replied as Atsumu glanced over to her shooting his signature smirk that Y/N had to mentally fight reacting to.
âGuess the ladies have a hard time fightinâ their inner desires when it comes ta me.â
Y/N scoffed then looked at the blonde setter, âOh you were serious.â
âYeh yeh play as hard as ya want ya know Iâm right.â He said waving his hand in a casual gesture as Y/N laughed at him earning her a joking glare from the setter.
âSo howâs my choco goinâ?â He asked as Y/N head shot up, she had actually planned to get them when she went back home to change before the event.
âDonât worry I bought you the cheapest but tastiest one.â
âAy, that ainât the deal.â
âWhy would it matter anyway, youâre probably not even going to recognize mine anyway.â Y/N stated trying to brush off the feeling of annoyance at his desire for sweets when he would be knee deep in the by the end of the night.
âIâd know if it was from ya.â
Y/N glances slowly up to Atsumu who had an unexpectedly serious expression. They stated at eachother for what felt like forever though they didnât really know what was happening between those unspoken moments but something was definitely happening.
âHey Atsumu is it true that Osamu kicked your butt at field day every year in high school?â
Catâs voice broke through whatever was happening as Y/N looked away quickly.
âSamu why ya lyinâ ya know I owned ya!â Atsumu shouted back making his way to the pair cleaning up a ways from them.
That just left Y/N to think about what had just happened and that those chocolate eyes she stared into was something deeper than she was ready to take on.
-
âSo is your brother single?â Cat threw out as Osamu was getting ready for his photo shoot shift.
He didnât know that agreeing to this stupid thing for Tsumu would have brought him to the exact person he was thinking of. He was extremely surprised that the same girl he met knew his brotherâs team manager.
He had yet to get her number as Atsumu was teasing him about since they got there and he recognized her. Introducing them went smoothly with a narrow escape of awkwardness thanks to his jamming an elbow into Atsumuâs ribs before he could say the milf comment he was biting back.
But what was with this sudden interest with his brother - she couldnât be into him right?
âDonât you think they make a cute couple?â Cat stared as Osamuâs thoughts were interrupted as he looked in the direction that she was talking about.
His eyes caught the scene that she was referring to as Atsumu said something that earned him a scolding smack over the head by Y/N. She looked like she was doing her best to be serious but at one word she laughed along with the blonde beside her.
He had to admit he hadnât seen his brother genuinely enjoying himself off the court anyway. Not since everything that happened with Hayami.
He assumed the same could be said about Y/N because Cat seemed extremely interested in how they were interacting.
âGuessinâ she ainât always like that.â He stated as Cat looked over to him, almost forgetting how attractive the man beside her was. But how she hadnât felt that attraction to the twin beside her best friend.
âY/Nâs a lot of things and definitely someone who could benefit from taking it easy every now and then.â She responded as the dark haired twin smirked at her.
âThat probâly makes two of ya.â
She looked at Osamu with a curious expression, âWhat do you mean?â
âWell ya know cuzâ yer a mom yerself?â He replied in a whisper that Cat could barely hear him.
âIâm a what?â
â...a mom.â He said again not sure if that was the best way to bring it up.
He really didnât know how to address it but he felt that she should know he was interested in getting to know her regardless of the situation.
Osamu didnât look at her just yet not sure what face she would make, maybe she would be offended or insulted he brought it up without her initiating that serious of a conversation.
âIâm a mom? Why in the world would you...â she replied as it dawned on her then that he had first saw her with Yuto. A young kid who she loved very dearly but was also not hers.
âBut the kid..â Osamu began but was stopped by Catâs hand moving up gesturing him to stop.
âHeâs a relative of a very close friend of mine.â She explained but stopped there knowing it wasnât her place to say who exactly he was especially when it was obvious that Y/N hadnât mentioned anything to Atsumu.
âSo yer not a mom then.â
âNot biologically, I have tons of kids though, I work at a daycare.â
âYer a teacha?â
âDing ding, looks like youâre not completely brainless then.â
Osamu shook his head how could he assume something like that and actually come out looking like he had the same intelligence as his brother.
âWell then how would ya feel âbout catchinâ a bite ta eat after all this?â He threw out not wanting to hold back any longer.
Cat looked up at him with a coy smile, âItâs about damn time you asked.â
-
-
By the time Y/N saw him he was surrounded by a hoard of girls. Despite this seeming like Atsumuâs natural habitat, anyone could tell he was politely trying to tell them to fck off.
She assumed this was from the constant bad reputation and hate he gained whenever he was -well his true self out in public. Many people enjoyed his athleticism and definitely his looks, his nasty personality though, wasnât a real crowd pleaser.
âListen ladies, thanks fer the goodies but I gotta go, gettinâ back ta the booth.â Y/N heard him say as he quickly ducked out of the crowd and made a quick exit choosing a banner displaying an elderly couple celebrating 50 years of marriage.
From where she was standing, he looked really ridiculous and strangely cute attempting to hide until she arrived.
As confident as he was on the court it was refreshing to know he had moments like this too.
âYou going to hide here all night or?â Y/N stated as she watched Atsumuâs shoulders jump up high and he quickly turned back to her.
âDonât do that-ya scared the sht outta me.â
Y/N bit back a laugh seeing Atsumuâs look of displeasure complete with arms folded together in a pouting motion.
âLetâs just get something to eat before you start getting more grumpy.â
âIf ya knew Iâd be grumpy whyâd ya make me wait so long.â
âLetâs go princess.â Y/N teased as Atsumu followed her his dragging feet showing his displeasure with her comment.
-
âIt canât have been that bad!â
After getting something to eat, they had somehow spent sometime talking and were now discussing horrible Valentine stories. Atsumu had just finished telling her of when a girl who was crazy for Osamu had slapped him silly when she mistook him for his twin and wasnât happy about him being on a date with another girl.
âYa werenât there Y/N, it was a nighâmare, she was yellinâ at me even pulled the other chickâs hair. I wouldâve laughed my ass off it wasnât happeninâ ta me.â Atsumu added as Y/N began to laugh at the story and his over exaggerated gestures and expressions.
He really was a good story teller.
âI actually feel sorry for you-here you were trying to score one and something like that happened. Not sure if itâs rotten luck or bad karma.â
âWhaaa, I hav great karma!â
âSure you do, especially for all those times you were beyond nasty about your serves.â
âThat was high school.â
âYou still do that!â Y/N teased as Atsumu turned to deny it but came up empty because she had a point.
âI ainât that bad no more.â
âHaha, that sounds like something a kid would say.â
Atsumu turned to look at her, âSince ya think Iâm actinâ like a kid, whereâs mine?â
âYou already have so many-why do you need this one too?â
âBecause ya made it fer me.â
Y/N tried not to think of how his voice sounded when he said that but it was kind of difficult not to. She wanted to blame it on the fact that she hadnât been on a date in years but maybe it was also because she was enjoying the attention Atsumu was giving to her.
Before spending time getting to know him, she just assumed he was a jerk but now she knew he was a jerk and so much more.
He made her laugh, like really laugh. Then there were times when his smile or even his stupid smirk or grin would tug lightly on her heartstrings. Or even the conversations that could be so random and average then suddenly deep and thoughtful.
So, she had made him chocolates, despite her better judgement, even when she was horrible at it and Yuto laughed at her attempts or spit out the really awful ones.
She pushed herself to make these chocolates because maybe she wanted to see wherever the heck this could go.
âIâll wait all night if I gotta.â His statement rung through to her as Y/N looked up at him slightly glaring at him.
âIf they donât taste that good just- lie to me okay and say they were great.â
Y/N reached into her bag slowly pulling it out.
âI mean it, itâs probably really bad, and if it is donât even eat them all, just throw it out.â
âWould ya just give âem here. Ya actinâ like Iâm some nasty chef whoâd spit it up on ya.â
Y/N reluctantly passed it to the blonde looking away trying to mask her embarrassment. Atsumu found this beyond amusing since she was acting like a real person and not just his manager or someone whoâs job it was to care about him.
âThank-â Atsumu began but a ringtone stopped him as he watched Y/N pull her phone out. He as about to say something when he saw her politely put up her hand gesturing for him to wait.
âYes this is she...â
â...is everything okay?â
â...oh...no thatâs fine, Iâll be right over.â
As quickly as the call came it ended as Y/N put her phone back into her bag. Atsumu was waiting for her to say something but from her distant eyes and silence he assumed it was personal.
âEr everythinâ alrifht Y/N?â
His question stayed in the air between them for longer than he expected it was like she hadnât even heard him.
âYo, Y/N ya good?â He asked again this time waving his hand in front of her face snapping her back to reality.
âOh yeah, I just got to take care of something.â
Atsumu watched as she began walking rather quickly in the direction of their booth.
âDid somethinâ happen? Ya got to go somewhere?â He continued to ask as Y/N distracted responses began to unsettle his stomach for some reason.
âYeah nothing so serious-just got to let everyone know I need to leave.â
âOh well, did ya need a ride? I donât mind takinâ ya.â Atsumu offered as Y/N stopped and looked up to him, her eyes somewhat guarded.
âYou donât have to do that.â
â...well maybe I wanna make sure yer good.â He replied as Y/Nâs lips tightened as though she was thinking of what to say.
âI guess that would be nice.â
âYa sure got a way with words.â
Y/N tried not to smile at his teasing tone but Atsumu caught it ever so slightly. She didnât realize he too, had a small smile on his face.

Made: 11/5/17 Posted: 11/25/17 Hereâs the reference sheet of my fursona in fursona form. Itâs pretty simple, since I couldnât fit much in and this isnât going to be a serious character used in stories. She has a backstory (which is similar to mine, but with fantasy elements to match my headworld) but Iâm trying to keep her as true to the real me as possible. -Information- Name: -classified- Nicknames: BDS (official nickname), Fluff God (joking title), Angst Queen (unofficial title), Spiced Fluff (Fall joke nickname), Fat Fluff (not an insult) Human Name: Meg (not my real name) Age: 22 (until September 18th, 2018) -in human years- Gender: Female Species: -unknown- (referred to as Dream dragon by some, Fluff dragon by others, space dragon? Undecided.) Family: -classified- Zodiac Signs: Virgo (astral), Boar (Chinese) Birth Stone: Sapphire Sexual Orientation: -unknown- Relationship Status: Single Social Type: Introvert (Which means I donât dislike talking to people and socializing, but gets back energy-or ârechargesâ-after a while of this by being alone and doing solo activities.) Religious Beliefs: Christain (Nazarene) Interests: Sitting at home drawing while watching YouTube videos or reading a book if thereâs one interesting enough available. Also enjoys roleplaying online with friends (Undertaleâs a good ice breaker with strangers), chatting on DeviantArt with friends, and posting her art on DA for feedback or just to show it off to people that will enjoy it. Also likes taking long flights, sleeping, and food. Flavored coffee is her favorite beverage, and she only drinks Mochas when holiday Lattes arenât available. Disinterests: Not a fan of sports-except for wizarding Quidditch-or hiking. Will settle for a fast walk, especially while listening to some kind of music or audiobook or talking with her companion. In general sheâs a very stay-at-home dragon more than a sporty, active one, but will leave her home for certain reasons. Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff Ilvermorny House: Horned Serpent Good Qualities: -A loyal friend -Kind -Willing to listen to her friendâs problems and frustrations -Good artist -Loves to laugh -Doesnât judge until recieving both sides of a story usually -Selectively good memory -Doesnât get angry easily Bad Qualities: -Shy to the point of going quiet too quickly if a conversation reaches a point she canât think a response -A bit lazy -Takes forever to reply to a roleplay, whether because her response is going to be really long (hence the laziness) or because she forgets or thinks she can reply later and THEN forgets⊠-Forgets some things easily, especially when thinking about something else -Takes a while on art owed, again because of the memory issue. Working on this. -Beats herself up about her past when she happens to remember something bad from it. Danisnotonfire on YouTube calls these âCringe Attacksâ. Which are apparently normal I think. Good. ââ Abilities and Important Design Features (this is mostly the fursona herself, not what I can do in real life) -Paint Brush Tail: Like Shardie did and does in roleplays, BDS has a tail that can paint on anything and everything. But it acts like an actual brush. No Okami brush techniques, just drawing on reality. All her drawings can come to life or be used in some way (like if she drew a rope, she could use it like a rope, or if she drew a mustache you could play with and twirl it like an actual one) but theyâre still made of ink or paint. So they donât become an actual person, just a drawing walking around. Easily erased with water or a special eraser. -Glowing Markings: Iâm not sure yet how I want these to go. I was thinking the glowing blue part is her skin under the fur, but then I wondered if that was too weird looking. The markings on the face are not skin, theyâre actual markings. All of them have an unnatural glow to them. Meaning itâs not clear where the light source comes from, but it makes a good nightlight or becon. She uses her huge wings to cover these markings when being stealthy, and sometimes people mistaken her for a benevolent spirit or even a Japanese deity or demon because of her facial markings. -Mood Change Markings: She can do this at will, but BDSâs markings change color with her mood as well. When reaching absolute fury, they turn red. Though she can turn them this color at any time, if theyâre glowing red and her sockets are either dark or the blue expands and the white slit becomes a slit-shaped gap in the middle, you know sheâs beyond pissed. -Eyes: This probably isnât needed, but for now the eyes are two glowing blue lights with gold centers and white slits for 'pupilsâ. Theyâre like Sansâs in Undertale and the black surrounding them are sockets. -Fluffy Body: Iâm not called Fluff God for nothing. lol *shot* One thing I wanted to keep consistent with my fursona is FUR. Big, fluffy fur because itâs fun to draw and is so soft and, well, fluffy. For now this is BDSâs winter coat. As it gets warmer again, most of the fur sheds around the neck area, leaving a fluff collar like Shardian!Sansâs in a sense. Though the neck remains covered in fur. -Medium Legs: The legs are a mix of a dog and a cat I hope, and are good for walking but not so much running. Though she will run if it calls for it, BDS prefers not to. She has retractable claws, but usually keeps them in since in real life, I donât have fingernails. -Chubby Build: BDS is chubby. Not fat, but chubby. She has a visible, hanging belly that can stretch quite wide. Especially when eating someone (yes, vore). -Huge wings: Her wings are very large and have the most muscle strength on her body. The reason for this is so that she can stay in the air for long periods of time without tiring or being dragged down by her weight. Both fur and fat together. Her wings also have star-patterns on the underside because I like that wing design. -Size: By default this is BDSâs size, however she can shrink to a little smaller than Shardie (big enough to walk about a house my houseâs size) and a house cat (for cat naps in small spaces). -Shapeshifting: BDS doesnât have an anthropomorphic form officially, but does have a human form which looks similar to Shardieâs but with some changes to not look exactly like her. The facial markings are also on this human form. -Breath Weapons: Bet you all think itâs a Gaster Blaster light beam, huh? XD *shot* No, actually BDS breathes blue fire that is actually Ice Fire. It looks like fire but when it hits its mark it leaves ice behind. She also weilds lightning. -Vore: This is only important to those that donât mind being drawn in art like this, but for the story behind it, BDS doesnât enjoy fatal vore when it comes to sentient creatures. Especially fellow sonas. When eaten by her, the next day they wake up unharmed either in their bed or somewhere else. No harm or pain comes to anyone swallowed by the Fluff Dragon, BDS. Anything else on this particular subject and those related to it will be in a different reference sheet if necessary. -Dream Walking: BDS isnât referred to as a Dream dragon for nothing. She has the ability to visit otherâs dreams, but unless really determined to do so, she cannot interact with them during their dream. She simply observes like one watching a play or movie but while able to walk around in said play or movie without being noticed by the actors or characters. If someone she knows well (a friend or close family) is having the dream and especially if itâs a nightmare, she can bend this rule and actually interact with said nightmare to protect or aid them in whatever way she can. When it comes to Dream Walking with friends, if given consent by them, they can meet up in the dream to talk or hang out. This is especially helpful when itâs a friend thatâs across the world or in another state and unable to visit or BDS is unable to visit them. In order to do this, she must inform them first of her ability, and tell them how to let her in. -Universe Travel: Can travel through the multiverse to anywhere possible. Unless a universe is closed off to travelers she can get there. (Except with worlds owned by friendsâŠsince it isnât serious or story-driven, I break those rules anyway. lol) -Outer Space Travel: Built for space. Has thick fur, no nostrils so probably no lungs needed for oxygen, and a huge body. So space is the default habitat of BDS. ââ Q n A (Some of these may not be pressing questionsâŠbut I want to get as much information on the design and its uses as possible.) Q: Can I roleplay as or use your fursona in any way? A: No. Do not roleplay with or use my fursona or any of my characters. If you are a friend, you may do so if you INFORM me first. This doesnât mean you canât draw them, it means you cannot use their designs or the characters themselves in your roleplays, forums, or blogs. These are not adoptables, they are not blank slate characters, and they are especially not characters in a franchise where I have made money and a name for myself with them. They are OCs, still copywritten to me and not available to be roleplayed as unlike characters like Sans from âUndertaleâ or Spyro from the âSpyroâ games, or TV show characters. Q: Are the wings detachable? A: No. The wings are always visible, but there will be times Iâll be too lazy to draw them. Officially though, the wings are meant to be permanently attached and unable to be removed or hidden except when BDS is in human form. Q: Is there a reference sheet for the human form? A: Yes, there is. Q: Will your fursona be used in fandoms? A: Yes and no. BDS will be drawn in art related to friends, real life events, and when I just feel like it. I want to put Shardie, my main OC, and my other actual OCs in crossovers and fandoms. That doesnât mean I wonât put BDS in a few. Like Undertale, which has a special place in my heart, or other fandoms Iâll never move on from if BDS is an appropriate or fitting addition. âMy Little Ponyâ probably wonât be one of themâŠbut weâll see. You will definitely see BDS in âVillainousâ though. Q: Will she be in any ships? A: Yes, Iâm going to probably draw her with my fictional character crushes.. Q: Can I ship her with my OC or sona? A: ThatâŠdepends. When it comes to friends, Iâm ok with it as long as you know itâs not the official pairing BDS is in. Crack ships or just-for-fun ships are fine. But Iâm officially single and Iâm not looking for a relationship. I will probably draw my fursona paired with other characters (mine unless discussed with a friend if theyâre ok with me using theirs) but none of them are official or 'canonâ. Most are just drawings with no story attached. When it comes to strangers thoughâŠIâd like to be informed before you draw your OC or sona in a shipping picture with mine. Even if youâre a friend, Iâd like to know. Just so it doesnât come as a shock. IMPORTANT: ASK ME BEFORE DRAWING OR WRITING ANYTHING SEXUAL INVOLVING MY FURSONA OR ANY OF MY OCs, PLEASE. Q: Can I draw your fursona? A: Absolutely! I would love fanart of any of my characters and my fursona. Just as long as you tag me properly so I can see it. ââ- So this is me. At least the true form of my character self/fursona. Human form reference sheet is next. ââ- BDS and art © BlackDragon Studios (me)

20 questions with Dr Ferox #2
Greetings Vetlings! Ready for a second round of 20 questions (and answers) as I work through my inbox? If youâre not sitting comfortably, doing so now would be a good idea. these are in no particular order. If youâve asked on anonymous, see if youâve been answered below.
@sckoviaaccordsâ asked: My cat had bladder stones, the dissolvable kind with medicine and proper food fortunately, but she got in the habit of peeing everywhere because it hurt her. The stones are gone, but she's still peeing inside, when she used to use the doggy door. My mom keeps saying that we'll have to get rid of her if she keeps peeing on the carpet. How do I stop her from doing this? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
First make sure the stones are actually gone, and that there are no crystals remaining, or residual pain. Contact your vet about this. Cats may avoid where they used to toilet if they have associated that place with pain. Then consider using litter trays inside, especially if there is a particular spot the cat is already frequently urinating. Different cats may prefer different styles of litter tray, or different types of litter, so use one she prefers (offer her two, then stick with the one she chooses). If she will use a litter tray inside, you can then slowly move it a foot or so each week closer to a more appropriate location. As a cheap trick you can also put down tin foil (aluminium foil) where she is urinating. You can also make decoy food plated by gluing some dry food to a paper plate, adding some loose food and leaving them where the cat is urinating. Most cats only urinate where they can get food, but this may only deflect her to another inappropriate location on its own.
@in-a-drought-lioness asked: What kind of bladder stones are there? I've heard there are up to 6 different types? I answered the last question tax but I think there was an old one about pokemon? I would say you remind me of Tauros, because in the latest game they seem to be protector pokemon and you are a protector of animals.
There can be several different types, and itâs not impossible to get a mix of two. the most common ones are struvite and calcium oxalate. Urate, cystine, calcium phosphate, sillicate or drug residue stones/crystals (looking at you trimethoprim sulphonamides!) can also occur, but are less common.Â
@rarmeowzâ asked: Do lungworms cause any long term damage in cats? My cat was a stray, and when we took her in she had lungworms. She was quickly and successfully treated and has been worm free for over a year, but I'd like to know if there's anything I should look out for, or if her lungs could be potentially damaged somehow
Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is the species usually referred to as cat lungworm, though other parasitic worm species exist which live in the lung. They donât seem to cause long term damage in my experience, though incompletely treated infections can predispose to chronic bronchitis. Affected cats often have an elevated eosinophil count on hematology. This parasite is not always detected with faecal flotation, you often need a Baermann technique. Â
@thehollowedangelâ said: Hi! I love your blog and was wondering if you had any other veterinary blogs to recommend? Thank you, hope your doing well!
Confession. I donât actually...follow...any...veterinary blogs. They are just too reminiscent of work and donât let my brain switch off and relax. i pop in on some sometimes when Iâm in the mood, but donât want unexpected random rants or clinical pictures popping up on my feed and forcing me to think. I do try to relax in my downtime
One place I do recommend checking out though is Dean Scottâs FunnyVet.com as the cartoons are funny, but very accurate.
Anonymous asked: Do you find that any dog sports are more dangerous to dogs than others? Thank you for the wonderful blog, since I'm curious, do you play D&D currently?
Not particularly if youâre talking about endangering their life. Anything that involved jumping or sudden turns if youâre talking about injuries. But in perspective, more dogs tear their cruciate ligaments around the home than they do at an event. Racing greyhounds are an entirely different topic.
And unfortunately no, Iâm not playing D&D at the moment. But I am being involved in a sci-fi podcast.
@mygearsarestartingtotrembleâ asked: I started getting curious about heartworm in Australia and if you guys had it and you do! Which surprised me. How big is preventive care in your hospital? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Why would it surprise you? Lots of things try to kill things down here, and we most certainly have the mosquitoes! Prevention is very big in more northern states, but down here itâs not as big. There is even one local clinic who actively claims other vets that push heartworm prevention are ripping you off! I always advise people that prevention is so easy, and while the risks may be low locally, the consequences of infection can be catastrophic. I suspect it will be more common here with climate change, the disease already seems to be moving south.
Understandably Anonymous asked: (cw: animal death, uh... taxidermy?) When my cat dies, I think I want to keep his pelt (in the least creepy way possible - of course I would get a professional to do it). Is this Too Weird to talk to a vet about, and I should make some vague noises about taking the body home to bury if we ever have to put him down, or are the odds high that my vet has Seen Everything and won't be fazed by That Weirdo Who Wants to Skin Their Cat? I don't anticipate this being relevant soon, he's only 11ish. Â Â Â Â Â Â
That is certainly a weird one, but not that extra weird. I donât know whether your vet would be fazed with this knowledge at all, but you are certainly within your rights to take a deceased pet home, usually for burial. Most vets will shave a patch of fur on a leg for catheter placement or intravenous access though, you might have to address this if youâre not okay with that.
@vantastrophe asked: Anything cool happen to you this week? :) Hope you have a good day! Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
I had a public holiday last Monday and discovered red velvet ice cream. Thatâs pretty cool.
@lapras-defense-squad asked: Hello Dr. Ferox :) I was wondering if you could please provide some advice on how to approach vet clinics in order to get a volunteer position. I am an undergraduate with no clinic experience, so I am really nervous about calling. Would asking for a volunteer position immediately (after submitting a resume and cover letter though) be too ambitious? Should I ask to shadow first? Thank you! Â Â Â Â Â Â
I suspect things work a little differently where you are, but generally in Australia we have students for work experience, which is unpaid. Thereâs a relevant post here. Asking to shadow before asking for a volunteer position is probably prudent.
Anonymous asked: Have you done anything on harpy or half-human/half-bird biology?
No I have not. I donât know when I might either, that will depend on my Patreon supporters asking or voting for it.
@a-floral-ghost asked: Is it true that when a dog or cat has an upset stomach it'll eat grass? Or is that just a weird myth
Itâs half true. Some dogs and cats will eat grass just because itâs there, at a chewable height, or because they investigate the world with their mouths. Some will chew grass when they feel nauseous. Itâs not so much a matter of eating grass makes them vomit, but more they felt like vomiting anyway so ate grass.
Anonymous asked: Could I ask you about cats that have shorter limbs? More specifically, the issues that you commonly see in cat breeds that have shorter limbs (those munchkins cats) and those that "naturally" have a larger torso to limb length ratio". (Question tax: Came for animal facts. Stayed for Sass and "WTH does that happen in Aussie?!") Thanks for taking the time to answer~
Iâm not sure what you mean by the ânaturalâ cats, but Iâve written about Munchkin cats here.
Anonymous asked: In your hospital (is a vet's office called a hospital) have you encountered any amazing dog rescues and recoveries? They're just so heartwarming to see
Not much from the dog rescues here, but I was involved with more in Tasmania. My favorite animal sanctuary is Big Ears, and I heartily recommend everyone check them out.
@gram-stained-paws asked: In what dilution do you use salty water for wound flushing?
In the clinic I use sterile saline. For at home I tell people to use a teaspoon of salt to a cup of water (ideally pre-boiled). Itâs easy for them to remember that way.
@bi-furiosa said: Hi! I wanted to recommend, if you haven't already seen it, a channel on YouTube called VetRanch. They're a charity of sorts that pull unwanted dogs in need of medical attention from local shelters, help rehabilitate them, and then work to get then adopted. They video the full process, including surgeries. They also frequently feature animals with demodex, and since that's what you're favorite parasite is, I thought you might be interested. Love your blog, and your patience with asks!
Iâm sure that will appeal to a lot of people, but it doesnât appeal to me at all. Itâs work, and I get enough of it at work. I donât need to be watching more veterinary cases, exposed to the compassion fatigue thatâs likely to generate, and assess or critique everything thatâs done or said. Itâs just not going to be relaxing, but that you for thinking of me.
Another Anonymous asked: Okay! You're a vet so you obviously talk about living animals a lot, but if you could chose one extinct species to bring back, which one would it be??
I would have to say thylacine. Theyâre pretty special to me, unlikely to be a threat to humans, and only went extinct recently so their habitat would probably still support them if they were to be released. Itâs also entirely our fault they went extinct, so I feel itâs only fair if we were to bring them back.
Anonymous asked: Kind of a stupid question but is it possible for a lizard to be warm blooded? Also, what is the difference between red and blue blood and can a mammal evolve with blue blood?
Warm and cold blooded are a bit of a misnomer. Ectothermic animals, like reptiles, are dependent on external heat to maintain their body temperature. They can get quite warm! Itâs certainly possible for a lizard to evolve endothermic capabilities, if thatâs what youâre asking.
The difference between red or blue blood is the metal ion in the oxygen carrying molecule. Mammals have haemoglobin which contains iron, producing the red color. Some insects and molluscs have haemocyanin which contains copper, causing the blue-green color. Haemocyanin is not present in mammals, and if a mammal-like creature did evolve it, I would question whether it truly was a mammal.
Anonymous asked: One of my rats is rather fat, and also blind. This is a problem, because it seems she doesnt use the enrichment i have for the rats as much (especially the wheel) maybe because she is blind? All the rats get is a constantly full bowl of oxbow rat food and occasional treats of plain cheerios and very rarely (maybe once a month) chickpeas. I give two of my rats other, higher calorie treats because they are so active they have problems being too skinny. Is there anything i can do to help my fatrat?
I really donât see a huge number of rats to be able to offer you advice. If sheâs blind she may not be able to use enrichment objects that require movement, but may still be able to enjoy enrichment objects with different textures or smells to explore. Thereâs bound to be better ratty folks to ask than me though.
@und1ne-prince asked: What/which is your favorite dog and cat breeds?
There are lots of dogs I like, including greyhounds, JRTs, Dobermans, and Swedish Valhunds. For cats itâs the humble moggy.
The last Anonymous said: Wait, what? There are people who think vets should work free? Why? It should be obvious that you're practicing actual medicine, not just randomly pulling diagnoses and treatments out of your ass.
Ah, but they say that if we really cared about animals weâd treat them for free.

Thri-Kreen (AD&D)
Holy shit, itâs been quite a while, hasnât it? Then again, Iâve had a very busy summer. And May, of course, was total bedlam what with the graduating from university and such. And of course this fall, where my faith in the American people was...uh, letâs call it âshakenâ, even though that rather undersells it, in my opinion. Hmm. Well, without any more hemming and/or hawing, thri-kreen. Mantis men. Zorak, even. Really, whatâs not to love about the thri-kreen? Theyâre MANTIS MEN. That is awesome! I mean, sure, none of their forearms have chitinous blades for hands like actual mantises, but four hands means four weapons, plus, theyâre psionic. Iâd say that makes up for not being Scyther.
General:
âThri-kreen are a race of large, intelligent insect often referred to as âmantis warriors.â They roam the deserts and savannah, where they have marked-out hunting territories. They have no need of sleep and can remain active through the day and night.â ...Well, on the one hand, they arenât hampered by lack of sleep, and on the other, it must mean their caloric intake is ludicrous considering they are constantly active. ...Then again, thatâs probably why theyâre constantly roaming their various hunting grounds...? âMature adult thri-kreen are roughly 7 feet tall at the shoulder and 11 feet long.â Well, thatâs nothing if not imposing! âOf the six limbs protruding from their midsection, two are used for walking; the other four end in four-fingered hands.â I mean itâs interesting, but I canât help but think looking at the example thri-kreen presented up top as looking a little unbalanced with how thin and skittery his legs are. Like, four arms is a wonderful gimmick that adds to what they can do? Itâs just that from a practical perspective I canât help but think the thri-kreen would have been best served on an evolutionary level with four legs and two arms. But who am I to judge? âThe tough, sandy-yellow exoskeleton is extremely hard. A thri-kreen has two compound eyes, usually black with highlighted eyespots, two antennae, and a complicated jaw structure that manipulates food as the thri-kreen chews. The antennae help the individual to maneuver through brush and grasslands in the darkness (they also reduce any melee combat penalty from darkness or blindness by 1; missile combat is not affected). Thri-kreen often wear harnesses and even some forms of clothing, but they never wear armor.â This is all fairly accurate to regular mantis anatomy (though as I recall, most mantises have some kind of extra simpler eyes in the middle of their head? But I suppose thatâs not majorly important), but the thing I question is their refusal to wear armor? Like, is this supposed to be a purely mechanical thing? Theyâll later on state that their exoskeleton gives them a natural Armor Class of 5; would wearing actual armor over that be that much of an overkill? Is this supposed to reference how in their native Dark Sun setting, metal armor is among the rarest of artifacts? Because even as a species with a hard, chitinous exoskeleton, I think I would want as much protection as I can afford if Iâm a soldier or mercenary of some stripe. Like, the exoskeleton is great and all, but if something gets through that exoskeleton, itâs like youâve lost armor plating, and have broken a bone, and have exposed your squishy innards in one fell swoop. âThe native thri-kreen language is made up of clicks and the grinding of its jaw appendages. While it is difficult for other creatures to speak this tongue, it is just as difficult for a thri-kreen to imitate more standard speech patterns. Thri-kreen speak their own language, but some understand the Common tongue.â Inevitably leading to Chewbacca-and-Han-Solo-esque bilingual dialogues as the one guy in the party who understands thri-kreen talks to their one guy who understands Common. Unless somebody has some kind of enchanted doodad to allow thri-kreen to speak Common unhindered, assuming they know it. Such are the luxuries of a fantastical setting, eh? âThree-kreen seldom live more than 35 years.â Oh. Ohhhh. Ohhhhhhhhh... Itâs a real good thing they donât need sleep, then. Really have to maximize their time, while they still have it.
Combat: âA thri-kreenâs chitinous exoskeleton gives it AC 5 naturally. Unarmed, it can attack with four claws and one bite attack per round.â No offense, but lacking the natural blades of regular mantids, those arms look rather willowy, and trying to use them for mere fisticuffs seems a waste. And while those mouthparts look sharp, I donât generally think of mantises when I think of âvicious bitesâ. âIf using a weapon, the thri-kreen can attack with its weapon and bite.â See, now thatâs more like it. And judging by the illustration, it would appear they very well might be able to quadruple-wield! ...Though considering the various penalties that would involve, perhaps it would be best to just wield a two-handed weapon with four hands. Hell, perhaps some bonuses for that could come into play, I donât know. I mean, youâre using more hands than is necessary, thereby giving your blows more force, and--ah, never mind. Bit of a longwinded tangent. âThri-kreen also learn special combat maneuvers as they grow older, learning all by the time they are mature adults.â Oh! This is different! Do tell! âLeap: This ability allows a thri-kreen to leap 20 feet straight up or up to 50 feet forward. They cannot leap backward.â Criminy! Thatâs...really rather impressive. I mean I suppose great leaping is more of a grasshopper, cricket, or flea-associated ability, more than with mantises, but...I donât know, it seems like a rather clever reference to whenever one is trying to compare the jumping ability of any of those insects to a human scale? ...Though I must say Iâm a tad puzzled at this being a learned combat maneuver, and not merely a natural jumping ability, merely being applied to combat scenarios... âChatkcha: This is a crystalline throwing wedge. A thri-kreen can throw two chatkcha per round, up to 90 yards. A chatkcha causes 1d6+2 damage when it hits, and returns to the thrower when it misses.â ...Boomerangs? ...Well, okay then. I like boomerangs. Boomerangs are neat. Donât know why the tri-kreen in particular have boomerangs, but Iâm not complaining. :V âVenom: This venom is delivered through an older thri-kreenâs bite. Anyone bitten must make a successful saving throw vs. paralyzation or be paralyzed. Smaller than man-sized creatures are paralyzed for 2d10 rounds, man-sized for 2d8 rounds, large creatures for 1d8 rounds, and huge and gargantuan creatures for only one round.â I...wait, what? Venom? The mantis-men have venom? I could understand driders, being spider people, or naga or yuan-ti, being snake people, having venom, but...the mantis-men? That doesnât follow. I mean, of course I donât think any sapient fantastical species mostly based on one creature needs to stick to the abilities of the animal, but the additions should at least make sense. ...Also, that sounds like a great way to make a group of thri-kreen a pretty huge threat. If someoneâs unlucky theyâre out for 16 rounds, 20 if theyâre a dwarf or halfling. âDodge missiles: A mature thri-kreen can dodge missile fired at it on a roll of 9 or better on 1d20; they cannot dodge magical effects, only physical missiles. Magical physical missiles (arrows, thrown axes, etc.) modify this roll by their magical bonus.â Oh! Bullet time! Neat! And unlike the venom thing, this actually makes some sense, on account of how zippy a striking mantis is. Also, thatâs literally bullet time if you have guns in your campaign setting. Whatâs more, since itâs dependent on the thri-kreenâs roll, it doesnât even matter if the archer or gunslinger are really good (unless itâs a natural 20, I think, which will always hit? but I donât know how youâd work that out), itâs all dependent on wether or not the DM rolls well on those dodge rolls. And on a 9 or higher, the odds are in the thri-kreenâs favor. Color me impressed. Donât piss off the mantis-men, especially if your party mostly consists of ranged folks. âPsionics: Some thri-kreen have psionic wild talents. There is a 50% chance that any thri-kreen will have a psionic wild talent, described in the Complete Psionics Handbook.â Oh right, thatâs a big thing in Dark Sun, isnât it? The proliferation of psionic powers? Hell, the descriptionâs kind of underplaying it by saying âsomeâ thri-kreen have psionic powers if a full 50% have them. A few bad coin flips and the party is being tossed about by a group of angry insectoid Jean Greys (Jeans Grey? ...Grey Jeans?). âMagical Items: Thri-kreen can use most magical items, though those designed for humanoid creatures cannot be worn properly, so will not function for a thri-kreen.â ...I mean that makes sense, but thatâs a little vague. Like surely magical weapons work the same, itâs not like they donât have hands. Not to mention magical rings, necklaces, bracelets, hell, even like a tiara or crown or circlet or something if situated properly around those antennae. Youâd definitely have to make some alterations to, say, a magical chain shirt, or something, to give it the proper arm spacing. Not to mention the four arm holes. But such a carte-blanche âit donât workâ doesnât seem terribly reasonable. Itâs not like theyâre weird blob things, they have arms, legs, a head...most of the general stuff should still work alright, in my limited estimation.
Habitat/Society: âThri-kreen organize into hunting packs; there are no permanent thri-kreen communities.â Tch, pity, really. I mean, it seems mostly a measure to ensure you can justify a thri-kreen random encounter. âUh, they were just...out here. Hunting. Yeah. Now fight them, take their stuff.â Unless of course you use your random encounter table for things that arenât just for random murder opportunities for your party.
Ecology: âThri-kreen are carnivores. They seldom hunt other intelligent creatures for food, but will do so in times of need.â Well, better than the lizard men, who explicitly prefer the taste of human flesh. I prefer Donner Party behavior to eating people when there are perfectly serviceable non-sapient animals and plants to choose from available already. âMantis warriors have a well-known taste for elves, which keeps both races at an uneasy peace at best.â ...Wait, what?! You just said they seldom hunt other intelligent creatures for food, now youâre saying they have a taste for elves?! ...I mean, granted, the word âseldomâ implies a non-zero number of intelligent creature hunts in non-starvation conditions, but still, that seems like a contradiction, to me.Â
Related Species: âThe tohr-kreen, or mantis nobles, are larger, more cultured versions of thri-kreen. Though many of them wander their world to gain knowledge, they sometimes build cities as well. They regard thri-kreen as somewhat barbaric cousins, though there have been incidences of a tohr-kreen creating a permanent settlement of thri-kreen, or teaching a pack more civilized ways.â ...Okay, well, first of all, âmore civilized waysâ are in the eye of the beholder. Second of all, they earlier mentioned that thri-kreen do not create permanent settlements. Yet, the tohr-kreen do? I suppose Iâm not really convinced that these tohr-kreen are actually a distinct species so much as a ruling class/caste of the same species. The âlargerâ thing, which would appear to be the only explicit physical difference between tohr- and thri-kreen, could easily just be the fact that noblemen of cultures the world over and throughout history have been better fed than the peasants, allowing them to grow larger instead of having their growth stunted through malnutrition. âThe xixchil are spacefaring mantis. These creatures are skilled surgeons and artificers, who enjoy replacing lost limbs with âmore efficientâ substitutes.â Ooh! Spelljammer shit, sounds like! I love me some sci-fi-fantasy crossover! I mean, theyâre really undeveloped, but âskilled surgeons and artificers with a taste for cybernetic enhancementâ is almost deeper characterization already than the rather vague and generic âHUNTING CULTUREâ that appears to define basic thri-kreen.
Overall: I really think they could have done more with the lore. Like they didnât even tell us wether thri-kreen women ritualistically kill their mates after conception. Not even as a joke. The most impressive thing about them is their various skills, like their leaping, and their psychic powers, not to mention Bullet Time. Iâd say use them, sure, but give them something to work with from a characterization perspective. If youâre going to keep them as hunters, I might go so far as to say crib from the Predator movies, and have THE HUNT be the centerpiece of their culture. Like, superiority in THE HUNT is the be-all, end all. Itâs better than âyeah, uh, they hunt, but sometimes they eat people, except when they donât, but except when theyâre starving.â Give them a proper culture. Though I guess thatâs what I usually ask for, then, ainât it?

A Localâs Guide To SDCC
Welcome to San Diego! Weâve always been a tourist destination, but July is particularly busy due to one of our biggest events of the year: the San Diego Comic-Con.
We love our city, and weâre very proud of it. We hope youâll love it too! Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the most of your trip, and help us locals who live here year-round.
San Diego In General
1. San Diego is much more than just the city. Weâre one of the largest counties in the State, and contain habitats from the beach to the mountains to the high desert. Most residents (including myself) live outside the city and are made up of many cultures that make us unique. In the big picture, weâre divided up into: North County, South County, East County (where Iâm from), and the city of San Diego. 2. Weâre a diverse county made up of multiple races, faiths, sexualities, and ideologies. We take pride in that, celebrating our diversity year-round. 3. Itâs beneficial to know some Mexican Spanish before coming. Those of us who grew up here and have lived here for long periods of time have picked up an intermediate knowledge of the language in order to communicate and pronounce our city and street names correctly. It is a large part of our culture, and many of us are bilingual or know enough to interact with the many Mexicans who work, live, and visit our county. 4. We are a Sanctuary City, and we take pride in that. 5. We have a large LGBTA+ community, who gather and celebrate in HIllcrest. 6. Weâre a Navy town. We take pride in our military and many San Diegians have some connection or a relative involved with the military. We desire peace and peaceful solutions, but we also take pride and support our military. 7. Weâre friendly, but donât like bad guests. Remember, we live and work and play here year-round. Youâre visiting, and weâre good at pointing out that youâre being rude to us. But we will go out of our way to make you feel welcome if youâre kind to us. 8. Our state has gone bagless! This means we charge 15 cents per plastic bag at almost all stores. Bring reusable bags.
Lodgings and Transportation
1. If youâre staying downtown, take advantage of the public transportation. While itâs not as reliable or practical outside of the city (since weâre so big), itâs easy to get around downtown that way. Itâs sometimes slow, especially during a big event such as SDCC. 2. If youâre staying someplace other than downtown (such as fashion or mission valley), rent a car. Carpool with people and park at one of the lots downtown. 3. Downtown is a walkable city. It can get a little hilly on the North end of the city, but itâs doable. 4. Whatever you do, avoid Grape St. Itâs a horrible intersection and we avoid it as much as possible. 5. Conserve water! We may technically be out of a drought, but weâre still protective of this resource. That and itâs incredibly expensive. 6. Be kind to those working transportation and hotels. Thank often and youâll be rewarded. 7. Always ask us for recommendations. Weâll point you away from the touristy places and to our favorite hidden secrets. Provided youâve been kind to us. 8. We refer to our freeways as THE (#). So The 94, The 8, The 5, so on. So if weâre giving directions, youâll hear it one of two ways: âTake the 94 West.â or âGo South on the 5.â
The Con Itself
1. Itâs big, itâs loud, itâs crowded. If we arenât attending or working nearby we tend to stay away. But we love hosting and weâre just as surprised as you that it has grown this big. 2. Plan out your day. Give yourself downtime as there is much to see and do and it can get overwhelming. 3. If you have purchased something large and you need help transporting it home, there is a FedEx shop in the center itself. 4. There is plenty to do and see outside of the center as well. The library has started doing things plus the Gaslamp Quarter is packed full of things to check out. Also Liberty Station and places further downtown tend to hold events as well. You just have to look. 5. HYDRATE! Weâre a semi-arid climate and even though youâre by the water it still gets hot. If youâre from someplace not used to the dry heat, practice hydrating now. You can always tell who the locals are by how much we hydrate. 6. If youâre like me and get anxious or overstimulated (or both), there are various places to hide away to calm down. I recommend the back of the convention center and the upper levels. There are plenty of little corners to take a quick mental break. 7. No matter where you go, there are pickpockets. Keep your badge close, and your belongings closer. I suggest small bags that are slung across the body or are attached to you. Backpacks can be a bit much on the con floor and pickpockets have gotten better about opening those little pockets. 8. If youâre planning on braving Hall H, I suggest following or talking to Englishman in SD or HiddlesEducates on Twitter. Theyâre pros at it and know all the fun tips. If youâre claustrophobic, have anxiety, or get overstimulated, I recommend not going in there. Trust me, having a panic attack in there is beyond not fun. 9. WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Food 1. Food will be expensive downtown and around the con. The food inside the con isnât great but will do in a pinch. 2. There is a Ralphs downtown. Buy snacks and small food items to take with you or make in your hotel if youâre able. 3. Youâre here at the height of tourist season. Plan a little extra for food so youâre not surprised. 4. If you want to try real Mexican food, ask a local. We know where the best places are. Old Town and El Indio are good places to start. 5. Donât forget to eat real food. Youâll need your energy.
Weather 1. Our weather is unpredictable. So far itâs been either normal 70 degree weather we all love, or way too hot. Dress for hot weather during the day and a light jacket/sweater for the night if youâre by the water. If youâre further inland it wonât cool down as much. 2. If youâre white like I am, WEAR SUNSCREEN. Everyone should but if youâre white wear more of it. The sun is unforgiving, even on overcast or marine layer days. If youâre spending a lot of time outdoors, wear a hat. 3. Weâre used to the heat but we complain a lot about it. Thatâs just us. Weâre firm believers in climate change because we can feel the effect. 4. If youâre Cosplaying, be aware of the heat. I love seeing everyone dress up but really hate seeing anyone getting heatstroke because of it. When I cosplay I have summer versions that I wear for SDCC for this reason. 5. From now to the day your arrive, watch our weather. Like I said, itâs unpredictable. For example, when the cast for Thor: The Dark World came we had a thunderstorm with rain and everything. Last year we had one of the worst heatwaves weâve ever seen. It happens.
Things to do 1. Have a day off? Check out some of these other awesome places! 2. Balboa Park. Weâre the largest urban park on the west coast. There are a ton of museums with plenty to explore. I recommend the miniature railway museum, Casa del Prado, and the Ruben H. Fleet science center. 3. The Zoo. Weâre world famous! And we just celebrated our 100th year. This year we just opened a new African exhibit that is pretty awesome. 4. Liberty Station. Places to shop and eat, the location of Stone Brewery, and is the home to Image Comics. I recommend Sliderâs 50/50. 5. Old Town. Where people first settled when they came to our area. There is plenty to explore, shop, and eat. I recommend exploring the Whaley House. 6. Sea World. There are rides, water fun, and plenty of animals to see. I recommend the shark encounter and the Shamu cookies. 7. Fashion/Mission Valley. If youâre interested in shopping and places to eat. Fashion Valley is pricier and Mission Valley has one of the best movie theaters. 8. Point Loma. Go all the way to the tip to see the lighthouse, catch the view of downtown, and visit the tidepools. 9. The Beach. This is where you think weâre at all the time. Not all the time but youâre close. Mission and Ocean Beach are right next to each other and are closer. You have the boardwalk and Belmont Park with shops. I prefer La Jolla Beach since itâs better to swim in and the surfingâs better. 10. Seaport Village. Literally a 5 minute walk from the convention center, it hosts shops and restaurants with a great view of the bay. Or catch the ferry to go to Coronado Island. I recommend the carousal (itâs faster than the one in Balboa Park) and the Hat Shoppe. 11. Julian. A bit of a drive but itâs an old community up in the mountains. Be careful driving. Come for pie (berries are in season), visit the old mines, and see what living in San Diego was like back in the day. 12. La Mesa. My neck of the woods! If you want to see where the locals really live and play (at least for East County), this is a good place to start. Downtown La Mesa has shops and a bunch of new restaurants that Iâm still exploring. We just did a huge upgrade a few summers ago so it looks really nice. Easy to get to by trolley.
Packing List As a local I find this weird, but this is how Iâd pack: Sunscreen, light clothing, light jacket/sweater, comfortable shoes, snacks, water, hat, sunglasses, medication you may need, a list of medical issues, emergency contact information, a small bag, swim suit, towel (if youâre going to the beach), reusable bags, something to keep you entertained while you wait in lines, device chargers, portable battery pack, maybe an extra bag to take home your loot in.
Have fun, enjoy your stay, and welcome to San Diego! Feel free to ask me questions.
