The time I fantasized about being hit by a bus.

I often get the question as to why I want to be a life coach. Well, actually the first question I usually get is “What the hell is a life coach, anyway?” So, let’s get that out of the way first. 

A life coach is exactly what it sounds like. Just like in sports, a “Life Coach” is someone who coaches you on life. I want to be the Bill Belichik to your Tom Brady! The Joe Torre to your Derek Jeter! The Márta Károlyi to your Dominique Moceanu! Think about it - the game of life is a fabulous, horrible, confusing, frustrating and amazing thing--definitely much more complicated than let’s say... a World Series or Super Bowl. So, doesn’t it make sense to have someone on your team, whose sole job is to be there to help you, guide you, cheer you on, and give the occasional tear-inducing motivational speech all to help YOU navigate the fabulous, horrible, confusing, frustrating and amazing thing we call life? I mean, winning a gold medal is impressive and all, but it is nothing compared to dealing with a horrible boss, online dating, trying to dig out of debt, your mother, losing that Christmas weight, etc. Am I right?

Ok, I assume you are with me now and we can move on. So, why do I want to be a life coach? Well, the best explanation I can give is to describe the time I fantasized about being hit by a bus. 

A few years ago, on a typical nothing-special day, I was walking to the subway to begin my commute to work. During my zombie-march to the MTA, I happened to look up and see that a large city bus was slowly moving its way down the street. I immediately began fantasizing about what would happen if I were to get hit by said bus. Now, to be clear, I was not suicidal. I wasn’t even depressed. I didn’t want to get killed by the bus, only just slightly maimed. I actually spent a few good blocks daydreaming and calculating the exact speed the bus would need to be going to only break a rib or two... or at worst put me in a short-term coma. I figured that at most I’d be looking at couple of days in the hospital and about a week off of work. Oh, how nice it would be to have a week out of the office....

And then it hit me. No, not the bus... the fact that I had spent a solid 10 minutes thinking about how much better it would be to GET HIT BY A FREAKING BUS, than to go to my job. The craziest part about it was that I didn’t actually hate my job all that much. I mean, I didn’t exactly love it but honestly, the idea of having nurses feed me lime jello for a few days was way better than sitting in my cubicle looking at spreadsheets. I was bored. I felt dead inside. Every morning I had to drag myself out of bed. I counted down the minutes until the weekend. I was hurrying my life up, wanting it to move faster so I could blur through the day-to-day and find some relief. Not exactly an “Eat Pay Love” moment. 

Thankfully I could recognize that daydreams of broken ribs and comas were not exactly the best way to be living life. I spoke to a friend of mine and she said “well of course you feel this way, you have no life.” Okay - she said it a LOT nicer than that, but that is essentially the gist of it. And she was right. My whole life was work. Not because I was a workaholic or felt a driving passion to change the world of financial services, but because I really had nothing else. I had a great family and a solid group of friends, but there was no passion. No purpose. Nothing to avoid on-coming buses for. Your life is a lot like a financial portfolio... okay before your eyes glaze over... stay with me on this. You’ve probably heard the theories on diversifying your financial portfolio. The reason you do this is that if for example your portfolio only had Google stock in it and then suddenly for whatever reason Google’s stock hit the toilet, you would suddenly be broke. You’re better off having a bunch of different types of stocks in there so that if any one stock hits the fan, you aren’t finding yourself panhandling in the Port Authority. It works the same for your life. At the time of my bus accident daydream, my whole life-portfolio was work. When I had a bad day at work, everything about me had a bad day. When work was boring and didn’t provide me soul-fulfilling joy - my whole life was lackluster and joyless. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a cubicle-confined day job. 

So, I decided to start ‘diversifying’ my portfolio and explored things I never imagined, including improv, stand-up comedy, world-travel, dating a sociopath (that one I don’t recommend), writing a novel, piano playing, reading, and the list goes on. It was amazing to see how drastically my overall happiness changed. When I had a crappy day at work, I would focus on nailing a killer comedy set on stage. When an excel spreadsheet left my creativity on life support, I would spend a few minutes writing my novel and suddenly the heartbeat of my creativity would come back. And that was only the beginning. 

Now I live my life as if every second counts. I believe that happiness is entirely in our control - which is an incredibly powerful notion. I’ve used this new found strength to do so many things I never thought possible - I fell in love with a (non-sociopathic) man, I secured myself financially, i went back to school to pursue my certification in life coaching - and I’m now working on launching my own business. And, I know that all of this is within my grasp. Nothing can stop me - not even a bus.

I feel like I have a secret power. I’ve learned something that no one else seems to know: how to harness my own strength to manifest happiness in my life. I want to help others discover this secret power; to harness their own strength and manifest positive changes in their lives. I want to pay it forward. I want to be your coach.
