Following our last #oldopgrapevine story, today we want to talk more about drinking habits in the hospital. This beer bell was rung at the distribution of beer and food to the wards. The daily ration in different time periods at Old St Thomas' Hospital varied between two and eight pints of beer. Although this may seem excessive, it must be remembered that 'small' beer was the staple drink of a time when clean water supply could not be guaranteed to be safe to drink.
