Secret Foodies Safari
About a year ago I signed up for Secret Foodies, a group organised by the lovely Ms. Darlinghurst. The concept was simple: get a group of random food loving people together in a random location and enjoy a meal based on a particular theme. They've had Christmas in July, Dia de los Muertos, Japanese, The 20s, Prohibition and other themes in restaurants and other random locations like rooftop bars and warehouses. You get to try different kinds of food and meet all these lovely, like-minded (everyone loves food!) people.
I finally went on my first event last week, a Safari-themed dinner at Taronga Zoo. With Secret Foodies, they don't tell you where you are going until a few hours before, but this time around it was not entirely unexpected, given the jungle theme. (they give you a general location, in this case it was Circular Quay to take the ferry...)
They arranged for us to take the cable cars up to the zoo, which afforded a beautiful view of the city lights in the dark, all lit up extra thanks to the Vivid Festival. After ushering us to the venue, we enjoyed some nibbles and some of the local wildlife came out to play! I got to touch a snake that crawled over my arm, and one very brave lady got the snake caught in her hoop earring and managed not to panic while the keeper untangled it. (Moral of the story: never wear hoop earrings to a jungle safari...) Below is a picture of a sleepy iguana, who was quite tame and let us pet him.
Our First Dish was the Scampi Sashimi with chili, coriander and extra virgin olive oil. I liked the texture of this dish but found the chili a bit too strong and had to remove it (after I accidentally swallowed one!). The chef (Sean Connelly of Morrison's) came out later and sort of apologised that the chili was extra hot that night!
The second dish was Grass-fed Eye fillet with Potato Fondant, Portobello Mushroom and Watercress with Miso Mayonnaise. The steak was so soft you did not need a proper knife to cut it, it was melt-in-your-mouth yummy.
Our last dish was dessert, of course, Lemon Delicious with Raspberry Sorbet. Both parts of the dish were meant to be eaten together, as the lemon was a bit dry without the sorbet. It was sweet and refreshing.
I really enjoyed this experience and would go again. What I liked most about it was meeting all these lovely people. A number of people came by themselves, and you don't have to come with friends to have a good time as long as you're up to meeting people. I'm looking forward to my next secret foodie adventure!
