things i (think) i know about Stargate Universe: a Stargate SG-1 & SGA Enjoyer's list of slightly accurate pre-viewing 'knowledge' gathered thru fandom osmosis

there's a ship called Destiny (AKA the Ancient Tesla) that's been traveling thru deep space for who knows how long to reach who knows where in order to do who knows what (it's classic Alteran modus operandi so this part doesn't really surprise me)

before that there's also an offworld base called Icarus, which is definitely a pretty ordinary name and not at all ominous and is in fact a great choice to call a facility you want to operate successfully

there's a character named Eli and a character named Rush. they may or may not be the same person

one of the crew is a video game player (?) who was recruited to the Stargate Program, the highly exclusive, top-secret international initiative for intergalactic exploration, because they are so good at playing video games (ousting John Sheppard & his One-Gene Qualification from the top spot in Luckiest Career Moves of the 21st Century)

Robert Carlyle is present, possibly as the only character who has the faintest clue what Destiny is and where it's going and what it's for

Will from Sense8 is also here, but he doesn't look like he knows what's going on at any given time

Stargate Universe also made it very difficult to refer to the setting of the entire franchise, because having to say 'The Main Universe Where Events in Stargate Happen' can be a bit of a mouthful

We also revisit Langara (AKA Jonas's planet) because the writers remembered that naquadria is a thing (but apparently still no Jonas?? because the writers hate me)

Also wanted to belatedly share the fic I wrote for @brumeier as part of the SGA Secret Santa exchange! I think of Brumeier as being the master of all AUs - their works are always so fun and creative, and I wanted to try to write something that would live up to them!

This is ANOTHER Christmas AU (just can't resist), featuring John and Rodney working in a department store, Ronon as a Hawaiian Santa, Madison being adorable, and a lot of romance-y feels.

Ok so following up where you said that talking about and standing up for bi issues is important for lesbians to do...I have a hot take that my community isn't going to like lol. Alot of lesbians that aren't les4les instantly lose respect for bi girls when they say their bi4bi cause that means they can't date them. That isn't ok because your respect for a person shouldn't end when you can not date them. That's some objectifation bullshit. If your a wlw fucking act like it. Love should be accepting and unconditional.

yeah it doesn't make any sense, especially when they are les4les. there's this super weird hypocritical idea that les4les is perfectly acceptable (which it is if done right) because of lesbophobia from bi women in particular, but bi4bi is not acceptable because of biphobia from lesbians in particular. the reason for this is that lesbians either think that biphobia isn't real, and/or they think they're not capable of perpetuating it because they're the most oppressed and the "real" gays and also bisexuals usually deserve it.

but yeah, usually bi4bi only ever upsets them after having previously established that they would never date one of us because it means we're denying them rightful accessibility to people whom they see as lesser, which is WEIRD because they should know how that feels when men do it to them!! obviously it's not the same kind of misogyny but it's still misogyny nonetheless and they're not above upholding that harmful cycle. i mean ffs they literally stan catradora and then insist they can never be abusive on the basis of being lesbians, c'mon.

but anyway that "i have a right to you" dynamic is simply about control and nothing more. that's the only reason why they would turn a compatible response to biphobia that flows nicely into something that interrupts their narrative. if they don't want to date bi women, and they insist that no lesbian they respect ever would, why do they care what we do? it's because they believe we're not good enough to deserve our own autonomy and happy fulfilling relationships. the whole "bisexuals are incapable of ever living through or speaking on any LGB experience without the presence of a real gay person there" is pretty much the explanation for that. we don't need the LG to be bi4bi and love ourselves, although it really doesn't help that we don't 'cause it'd sure be nice. we don't need the LG to take charge of a wlw relationship for us if both women are bi. if it's not about control, why do they show time and time again that this is exactly how they feel? why do they project so hard and act like we're claiming they oppress us (even though we don't) if they don't wish that power imbalance was real like they always openly say they do? it's not a secret that apparently lesbians are supposed to be able to oppress bisexual women despite the fact that they can't and don't just because it would satisfy them to keep us silent (’cause y’know bisexuals already do oppress lesbians since we can just throw their existing but less-valid SGA out the window /s).

something i'd like to note here is that i do understand some bi women are very homophobic about les4les and i'm not gonna be a hypocrite and deny that. the truth is, it just sucks when you're not included in something and you're not given access to people you want to be around. it's really easy to take that personally, and i think those feelings are valid to some degree. but it does need to be understood for both groups in both directions that it isn't personal and it doesn't inherently assume that you as an individual are biphobic or lesbophobic, even if those preferences are decidedly solidified and strict (i for one am not that way, i'm both bi4bi and bi4les but i have a very heavy preference for and hope to end up being bi4bi. i'm really only bi4les just in case i end up being that deep in love someday because my morals and boundaries aren't worth hurting and screwing myself over for imo). people are allowed to have boundaries and if it's understood that you can, then so can they. i also understand from experiences the frustration of bi4bi being seen as less legitimate than les4les because it's been accused of being a copycat method in addition to its reasoning for existing being dismissed as fake. but hating bi4bi over prejudiced assumptions doesn't make les4les wrong and hating les4les over implied homophobic feelings from being left out doesn't make bi4bi wrong. we're both shunned for our dating preferences, not just the latter, and it's because anyone can be misogynistic and a specific type of anti-wlw homophobic that only applies to sapphics of either kind.

that's why les/bi solidarity is so important these days, now more than ever, because we really do hurt each other the most more than anyone else, and that reason is that we have more in common than anyone else. sapphophobia hurts from straight people and gay men, sure, but it cuts deep when it comes from your own. pick-me bisexuals, boot-licking lesbians, they're both understood by their individual respective communities to cause real internalizing damage. why is interactive sapphophobia not just unrecognizable, but also completely acceptable, especially on the biphobic lesbians side of it?

AO3 Ask Game

I was tagged by @themarshalstale which, thank you so much! I feel like I always get missed on these (I know why, it’s been 84 years since I published anything but still). 1. How many works do you have on ao3?

46 it seems. Which...look I’m slow man so that’s not surprising. lol Also crippling depression does not make for much production, at least for me.

2. What’s your current AO3 wordcount?

309662 according to the stats.

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

So do I could only AO3 or in like life? lol I suppose it should only be on AO3 since this is an AO3 ask game. Hrm. Basically AO3 can be summed up as: Marvel (in several iterations - all Avengers related) Torchwood Highlander But isn’t it more fun to consider my entire fandom life, which, I’m sorry, I’m old so...yeah. Not all of this is was published and beyond that a lot is not available anymore...which is likely for the best. Highlander Star Wars Babylon 5 Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers Marvel (again, several iterations also of note Avengers and X-Men both count) Torchwood Star Trek LOTR Stargate (SG-1, SGA) Mortal Kombat I dabbled with the idea of Potter fic but never got past the ideas stage.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1: You rearrange me till I’m sane Clint finds himself spiraling into a deep depression after the Battle of New York...until the Winter Soldier ends up saving him and inadvertently giving him a new purpose – to save the man that the Soldier had once been – Bucky Barnes. Not one to be outdone, the Soldier decides that his new mission is to ensure that Clint remains alive himself. Protecting a blonde man with a self-destructive streak is somehow very familiar to him. Through the back and forth of who is saving whom they cross the country and learn more about themselves and each other – and perhaps find a reason for living. 2: Five Dates Bucky Didn’t Realize He Was on And the One He Planned Himself To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it.Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.

3: Puck Luck Bucky Barnes is used to the ups and downs of an NHL season. He's used to the unpredictability of the game, knows that bounces don't always go your way, but that doesn't make a broken hand in the final third of the season any easier to deal with. Especially not when he ends up with an impromptu roommate/personal assistant in the form of one Clint Barton - his agent, Natalia Romanova's (rather attractive) friend he hadn't known existed before his injury.

It's just for six to eight weeks - what could possibly happen in that span of time?

4: Loose Lips Launch Ships

Based on the following prompt: “We go to school together and I think you’re cute and apparently you’re also the pizza delivery guy and my little sibling opened the door screaming hey sibling! you know that kid you’re in love with? you really weren’t kidding when you said his jawline could cut steel holy shit-” Bucky is the pizza delivery guy. Clint's younger (foster) brother has a big mouth.

5: Indelible Bucky Barnes has a pretty decent life – a good job, good friends, a cat that adores him - but something is missing. He’s always found body art to be beautiful and inspiring, and on a whim (and with the hope that maybe he can find what he’s missing) he decides to take the plunge and get a tattoo. That's how he meets Clint Barton. Clint's talented and compassionate and there is an instant spark between the two of them. It's not long before Bucky finds himself wondering and wanting more from the relationship despite the ghosts of the past that crop back up. Because Clint makes him feel normal in a way he truly hasn't for years...

(this was pre-Alpine so I was totally chuffed when canon confirmed Bucky’s status as a crazy cat lady (affectionate).

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not.

I really really really want to do it but I often times don’t end up doing it. There are a few reasons. First, I am akwward AF and bad at interaction adn I feel like just saying thank you would be...not enough? Second - I often times tend to like...turtle (aka retreat into myself) when life gets Too Hard/Busy which happens a lot to me (sigh) and then I miss the vague window in my mind in which it would be okay to respond and then it’s even more weird. I do love and cherish all of them. Like there was one months ago that made me go “hmm...I didn’t think I was going to do a sequel to that fic (You rearrange me till I’m sane), timestamp glimpses sure but a sequel hadn’t come to mind” but then the comment made me think! So...who knows? lol Anyway, I literally have been rereading some in an effort to try and get myself going again. Know that if you have commented, I love you.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

At the moment? Probably: Look at you look at me Bucky's in love with Clint - problem is he's really not supposed to be. For Winterhawk Week 2019 - Forbidden Love (I really don’t want to give away the spin in the fic but...if you’re familiar with the Secret Avengers Vol 2 run circa 2013ish (aka when SHIELD initially ‘took control of the team’) that’s a bit of a hint as to the spin). Were it done, Torch Song would be up there. ;) Torch Song Clint is sent back in time, via an alien device, to 1938. While he tries to figure out how to get back home, he takes up singing and entertaining to make ends meet and does his best to not disrupt the timeline.Then he meets a 21 year old Bucky Barnes. --- A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.

7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

Does *wanting* to write crossovers count? lol I want, so badly, to do more crossovers and fusions (which...are kinda deeper versions of crossovers in a way). The only one I do have posted is a crossover between Highlander and Torchwood -

The Immortal Mr. Jones A series of vignettes (some long, some short) in the life of the newly immortal Ianto Jones. My most ambitions project that I have been working on since late 2011/early 2012 is a fusion of the Avengers with Stephen King’s the Stand. I will get that done at some point *shakes fist*  The Stand, for those who don’t know it, is an epic 1000+ page novel about a flu epidemic (I know) that wipes out over 99% of the population and then two figures representing Good and Evil pull the survivors in two directions for a showdown. So basically it’s a non-powered modern AU set in that universe. It’s a passion and comfort project. lol

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes. Well, minor bitching back when I was in a prior fandom because I tagged a pairing in a fic but it was pre-slash and not labeled as pre-slash. I got hate on...I think it was Torch Song? And I’ve gotten hate on tumblr re me and my fic in general as well. Fandom! *jazz hands* Oh! And I’ve also been hit by those reviewers within Winterhawk (among general Clint pairings actually) who like rate you on either number scales or the “meh” scale. Which isn’t hate exactly but...it’s passive aggressive bullshit because I can’t believe none of them realize at this point that the authors can see their bookmarks - you know?

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. Do I write it well? I have no idea. lol

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of. Well...there was, I think, one of those reposting sites that had a few fics on it but I don’t think it was being passed off as someone else’s? I can’t quite recall. It’s why I have a note on AO3 about reposting my work anyway.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not entirely, but sort of. Let me explain - I am part of a PBEM game; which for those unfamiliar since it’s a term that was most heavily in use 15-20 years ago, in which you basically do a round robin type writing thing but rather than everyone writing the same characters you write your own characters and you play off what other people have done. Another way of looking at it is  it’s basically DnD without dice and written down rather than done out loud. You also don’t have to all be around at the same time. It’s a lot of fun and yes I have been in it for 20 years even though there aren’t many of us left but they are some of my dearest friends and fabulous writers. Wins all around.  One of the other writers and I have actually toyed with the idea of doing a co-written fic actually, mostly because we work super well together and keep getting ideas for things but can’t really do them as rpgs since the pbem style isn’t used much anymore.

12. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Winterhawk probably. Though, let’s be real - Han & Leia are epic and amazing as are John & Delenn (from Babylon 5).

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Does wanting to expand The Black Stallion books as a wee child count? lol Not much of that was written save for world building ideas but there was a great oral tradition of telling stories to my friends. Otherwise...maybe a tie between Star Wars and Highlander. Star Wars was a love since I was super young but the writing bug didn’t hit me until around the same time Highlander was a thing as well.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You rearrange me till I’m sane for sure. Though Torch Song, if it were finished, would be tied I imagine (I suck at picking favorites). Then Daniel finally circled around to why he’d called in the first place. Pulling out the small stack of documents from his bag he said, “Before I can say anything else, I need you to sign these.”

Max raised an eyebrow at the statement and the papers in front of her with the symbols of the US Military and Government on it. “Daniel what-why does this say ‘Official Secrets Act’?” she hissed when she spotted one of the words at the top. Eyes flitting across the top half she was trying to figure out what was going on. ‘Revealing national intelligence is considered treason and will result in jail time.’ 

Looking up from the paper and at Daniel she didn’t know what to think. “What have you gotten yourself mixed up in?”

Daniel looked at his friend and could see the confusion and curiosity on her face. Shifting slightly in the dark wooden chair, he leaned in so the general conversation and noise of the coffee shop would cover his voice, “Max...do you trust me?”

Max looked at Daniel, the noise of people talking and drinks being prepared fading into the background. She could tell he was asking as her long-time friend, the one who had seen her at her lowest and helped her through it, the one who spent countless late nights at a diner studying and laughing. Taking a breath to steady her pounding heart she nodded, “I do.”

“Okay. Then trust me when I say that before I can say anything else you need to sign the forms. It’s fine if you don’t want to. We can just spend the rest of the time catching up.”

Hi! Since youre into sga again how do you think mcshep would be in a h50 au or as steve and danny?

fjdkfd honestly, i think merging those two that way around (transplanting john and rodney into the h50 universe, rather than steve and danny into the sga one) would be a lot harder than it sounds. the h50 world is... fairly nondescript? its big draw as a show was undeniably the characters, so swapping those out changes a lot of the details that actually made the show what it is.

if we are going for it, however, i think the obvious choice would be to try a john-as-steve and rodney-as-danny approach, except john wouldn't be john if he were a highly decorated superseal with a spotless record and rodney wouldn't be rodney if he had a kid to care about and prove from the getgo that he's not as selfish as he appears, so... we could hide that, for a little? or, and bear with me here! we could do something a little unorthodox and make it rodney-as-steve and john-as-danny instead, which i think would overall be a MUCH better fit.

like, rodney is a brilliant scientist who returns to the island where he grew up after many years because his father was killed; john is an unwilling transplant cop from the mainland who followed his ex-wife (which he canonically has!) and their little daughter (which he doesn't, but if he DID, you can't tell me he wouldn't blow up his own life and move to a place he hates to try to stick close to her). i think that particularly for john this works a lot better: his captain and the other detectives don't think much of him (like colonel sumner), he hates hawaii and how sweaty and crowded by tourists every single bit of honolulu is (remember that he LIKED antarctica), and he lives in really awful one room apartments because the divorce, custody proceedings and move across the country ate up all of his savings, but he DOES still own a very expensive very pretty very fast car, because of course he does.

rodney is maybe a little more tricky, but i think we could make it work, especially if we draw a little vegas!rodney into it, perhaps. he's done well for himself, he has a bunch of awards and hops from place to place working on very secret projects (for the us military, potentially, if we want to keep that aspect), and then he hears his dad with whom he has a very complicated relationship is dead, so he returns to oahu where the governor personally greets him and is like, hey, you have a very unique skillset, want a job on my new special taskforce fighting major crime? and he goes nope, and then he runs into john in his father's garage, makes a call while john is pulling strange annoyed faces in the background, and suddenly they're putting together a team. rodney doesn't know chin from their football days, but from chin playing in the school band (which he did, iirc!); chin can still draw in kono, etc. obviously jeannie is mary, but i think jeannie could still bring the same chaos while nonetheless being married and having a kid (there HAS to be a scene in which she and john bond over Being Parents and she HAS to be surprised when she sees rodney be very gentle and sweet with john's kid), and i feel like it's important to note that catherine's role does NOT go to sam (because that would be weird and would only happen if rodney were the one writing this au), but to jennifer, who also gets a little of her vegas personality probably. especially the bit where in that episode she acts as an ME, because that would work very well for what is now essentially a cop au - she's the person that gets called in if they have a very weird body.

and yeah, uh. there's probably more "borrowing" of kamekona's helicopter in this version, because john can never resist. it's a little less clear who's actually leading this taskforce, because officially it's rodney but he definitely needs john to reign him in sometimes, which honestly, might just be another way this configuration fits the steve-and-danny dynamic well. i realize that i kept chin and kono and then replaced the other characters with faces from sga, so if we want to fill out the cast: i propose another swap from the first thing you'd think of if you had to put ronon and teyla into those two positions. teyla is chin, wise and ruthless and devastatingly beautiful, and ronon is kono, the looks-like-an-actual-model newbie who used to be a professional surfer and stuck with teyla when she was accused of corruption and all of her family (the athosians!) turned on her. (they still meet him on the beach as he punches a guy for stealing his wave, and john still has his mouth hanging open a little.) also! carson is max, of course. instead of dressing up as keanu reeves characters for halloween he dresses up as scottish folk heroes.
