RUBY - sonic science
(Deconstructed Club, IDM, Indietronica)
Ruby Poile's massive, 21-song album exudes confidence no matter how far out her music gets. Playing around with birdsong, alien vocal modulation, and unthinkably smooth grooves, sonic science buys Poile leagues above most of her electronic peers.
☆☆☆½
"THIS IS NOT EDM, THIS IS EMOTION" is the final sentence plastered onto Ruby Poile's Spotify page. Even without hearing her music, the confidence in her Berklee-trained artistic mind bursts through that one, all-uppercase statement. It's also a little surprising, then, that sonic science is so far removed from the expected EDM sound that the album flies far above what anyone else is doing right now. Even as far as the avant-garde goes, nobody else is playing with the sounds Poile is showing her mastery over here: birdsong is turned into a bright rhythmic additive, synths range from soft and spacious to noisy, industrial-strength power. Wherever she dives into, there's something to bring back to the surface. Across sonic science's 48 minutes split across 21 different tracks, these short soundbites that sometimes only last a little over a minute pack creativity that could only come from this singular a talent. slammedhead's impenetrable walls of elastic, snapping synths bend in a million different directions, and firealarm shows off Poile's ambient side, the most naked form of sound she can design and giving a deeper look into the depths of her sound. She also knows when to let things be more club-ready, friendlyassault and noitsfine sitting right in the pocket to soundtrack an extraterrestrial dancefloor. It's by far her widest showing of her skills yet, embracing thumping trip hop filtered through neon smoke on secondhead right before fuzzyorangemonster jumps into an Invader Zim sounding vocal samples dancing around inscrutable percussion a few tracks later. No matter what you go into sonic science looking for, there's a good chance Poile has it in stock for you. She also has an immense level of control over these songs, proving that her music's wild nature is nurtured carefully, even showing how to perfectly equalize your audio for the best listening experience. It perfectly explains how thrilling the contrasting blends of natural field recordings and dark, muddy electronics on opener experientialtears, Pt. 1 doesn't feel out of place in the slightest, and why sugary, opulent dance tune culdesacspinouts later on is able to exist on the same album. There are rules to the world of sonic science, but they only go as far as making sure every part of her work has a home to return to. bikewheelplayingcard’s punchy drum patterns make it prime focus music, but so are the tender, wandering synths swelling up on firealarm. Her music truly knows no bounds on sonic science, and the fatigue that does begin to arise after 21 tracks is easily outpaced by the arresting beauty of these electronic miniverses. There are two more installments to come of the "sonic" series, and with the first of them out it's still impossible to tell exactly what the others will sound like. The only word that can tie all these versatile, unrelentingly creative songs together is spellbinding, and there's no doubt the rest of the series will follow suit. You're never quite sure what Ruby Poile is up to, but that surprise is half the fun; every new turn becomes an incredible new development in her work. It seems like she could sample practically anything, or turn any idea in her head into an amazing demonstration of her talents without it ever feeling like she's unsure of where things are headed. Ruby Poile's music is her home, and the liminal space it resides in leaves infinite room for her extravagant artwork to crystallize.

So instead of drawing the poses in order, i'll just draw whatever pose i feel like drawing.
Right now i'm drawing SECONDHEAD'S right pose, it's going good so far because no joke, i specialize in funky goofy faces like Felix's reaction to killing Jack's children in The Walten Files (The Walten Files 3 - BUNNYFARM) or Gabriel's face when he reveals he's an alternate.
I'm the shit B)
