Another thing in hummingbird salamander I enjoy is how its setting plays out. You’re never given a date, just a general region. You assume its modern day because so much of what it says is familiar. And then you realize its set in the future through curveballs it throws. Ecological disasters and technological advancements you could easily see coming true within the next five years, side by side with things that are happening now that rattles your desensitization, and makes you realize you ARE desensitized in the first place.
We used to get sleet warnings, now we get flood warnings. A sickly lukewarm, with rain cutting through the ice. You heard new york flooded badly, but thats something that just happens. Theres a neighborhood drone you spot hiding in the trees sometimes. At a glance it could be a bird. You try not to think about it too much, and just try and enjoy your deliveries and packages without considering where they came from or how they got here so fast. We’ve gotten good at drones, but we still can’t stop the torrential flood of plastics into the ocean, so maybe we’re only good at whats convienent.
