Fittingly enough, the wedding ceremony is the climax of machismo and female humility. According to James Bell, men from the Adygei tribes in the 19th century would start their wedding nights by ripping open their wife's corset with a kinzhal, the ultimate blend of violence and passion. IN Chechnya, the bridge is traditionally picked up from her house for the wedding by gun-toting friends of the groom who drive a convoy of cars, horns blaring and gunfire roaring out of open windows. Even in quieter parts of the North Caucasus, the bride's relatives are not allowed to the ceremony, which takes place after elders from the two families have agreed on bride money. IN rare cases, men simply 'steal' their brides, either because they can't be bothered to go through the usual course of negotiations or because their love is unrequited. When a girl is kidnapped, the elders again have to negotiate to try and come to a deal, or in a few cases her relatives try to rescue her by force. A Chechen guerrilla told me in 1996, shortly after the war ended, how one of his young comrades in arms, Alikhan, had recently tried to 'steal' a girl. 'We drove up to where she lives and Alikhan jumped out to get her. When she saw him, she screamed and the parents came out of the house. He got scared and we drove away. So we really make fun of Alikhan now - nothing in the war scared him, but the girl did.

Tucked away next to the washing powder saleswoman were knots of men with hard faces, crew cuts, and more than a few broken noses - the arms dealers. Even though Russian troops were deployed a few kilometers away, Chechens could buy a Kalashnikov rifle for $100 or an anti-tank grenade launcher for $200. The guns were openly displayed and a wild-faced character who had a sawn-off shotgun in his belt and a foot-long black beard claimed he could procure me a tank. 'Anything you want, we can get it!'

'The Russians, the only thing they have ever taught us, is how to fight,' Vizit says through the darkness. The young Chechen fighter is sitting on a hillside near the Moslem holy place of Hadji Yurt, in the beautiful rolling foothills of the Caucasus, called the Black Mountains. The war is in its sixth month, mid 1995, and the Chechens are being driven back. We're in one of the last rebel-held areas. The starry night is quiet, except for the dull roar of Russian planes, dropping giant magnesium illumination flares that hang beautifully, like chandeliers over the smooth silhouettes of the hills. 'At the beginning of this war, we didn't know much about fighting. But just like our forefathers, we learnt quickly and they've paid for it,' Vizit says. 'They'll never take this valley, not our village, not the holy hill. At least while I live.' He pulls out a foot-long kinzhal. I walked with him to this spot and don't remember his carrying it. But here it is. Muhst have been in his jacket. 'Look at this kinzhal. A friend of mine from Avtury gave it to me at the start of the war. It belonged to his grandfather, who was an abreg. You know what an abreg is? A bandit. It's a beatufiul thing this kinzhal.' The knife feels solid, well-weighted, cold, sharp and smooth. I don't suppose Vizit uses it much, but a lto of these guerillas like to wear a kinzhal along with their grenades, Kalashnikov ammunition clips and pistols. It's a way of saying that they're continuing the fight of their forefathers. Vizit is the genuine article, a mountain man who thinks plains dwellers are soft, who keeps home-made anti-tank rockets in his barn and has six children. Vizit says he loves freedom and weapons. To him, they're inseparable. After putting the kinzhal back in its sheath, he pulls out a shiny revolver. Damned if I know where that's from; he just produces it, like a conjuror. He spins the chamber, making a clean, smooth clicking sound in the night air. 'This revolver here is an antique. My grandfather gave it to me. It was made during Tsar Nicholas's time near Moscow. You could play roulette with it.' he laughs, spinning the chamber. 'Weapons are our weakness.' A year later the Russians captured Hadji Yurt. I hear that Vizit was killed by an artillery shell.
