thanks to all your good info, im looking into applying to volunteer to work maintenance on tallships in the winter or fall, and getting a job on crew come the next sailing season!! it turns out its actually very possible for me in my area. do you have any recommendations for licenses or experience i could get in the meantime that would help my application?

For licensing, really the only thing you can get without seatime experience is an OS/Ordinary Seaman. It basically says you know how to tie some knots and basic safety, and really does little more than get your name on the books- but it looks good on applications, especially for someone so green! Related to that: learn some knots! Most boats use the same small handful of simple knots with maaaybe some minor alterations, and if they use anything else more specialized then they'll DEFINITELY teach you, but knowing how to tie a bowline, clove hitch, and midshipmans hitch will take you almost as far as you'll ever need to go. Check out animated examples online and just practice, practice, practice.

Learning some boat lingo and names of parts of boats will also help, though that's harder to do online unless you already know exactly what to look for.

i'm not connected to tallships/maritime history tumblr because i'm so fucking jaded. i probably have more seatime than most tallship sailors on here & i'm literally married to a schooner but nobody follows me to romanticize life at sea because i won't let you. the lack of recognition does make me extra jaded which is even better
